TV Review: The Strain: Season 4, Episode 9: The Traitor [FX]

The Strain: The Traitor Review The Strain, season 4, episode 9, ‘The Traitor,’ was the last stop, on the way to blowing up a series mythology. Unfortunately, that stop was mostly spent trying to convince us that Zach (Max Charles) was redeemable. Hopefully, some of you still had uncracked/ unsmeared screens, by the time this attempt [...]

The Strain Season 4 Episode 9 Review – ‘The Traitor’

Martin Carr reviews the penultimate episode of The Strain season 4…

As we near the end of a four-year odyssey there are layered dialogue scenes, moral questions on both sides about bearing the blame and slicing and dicing aplenty. As we watch ‘The Master’s final trump card being played, disciples being interrogated and megaton bombs being ferried around town like takeaway pizza The Strain steps up a notch.

Goodweather, Dutch, Fet, Quinlan, Gus and Roman have developed into a tightly bonded team. Interlopers, fraudsters and the enemy are quickly sniffed out, dispatched or questioned to gain more information. High points in ‘The Traitor’ focus primarily on dialogue scenes between Goodweather and Zak, Fet and Dutch as well as Desai and everyone else. Penry-Jones continues bringing a disconnected mercenary disposition to proceedings, which underpin any emotional moments or fantastical events. Jonathan Hyde perpetually overlooked incarnation of ‘The Master’ is understated, regally

TV Review: The Strain: Season 4, Episode 6: Tainted Love [FX]

The Strain: Tainted Love Review The Strain, season 4, episode 6, ‘Tainted Love,’ got one thread off the ground (literally), while mercifully wrapping up a pair of sentimental side-bars. Unfortunately, that meant getting through a Zach (Max Charles) & Abby (Jocelyn Hudon) Make a Tragedy travesty; but the Quinlan (Rupert Penry-Jones) flashback at least had something to [...]

The Strain Season 4 Episode 6 Review – ‘Tainted Love’

Martin Carr reviews the sixth episode of The Strain season 4…

Lovelorn, love lost, love squandered and relationships shattered define episode six of this final season mid-point. Cat and mouse car chases across country with trigger happy snipers on guard, stand between salvation and disaster in the shape of an airfield exit. Throw in some jealousy, miscommunication and flashbacks to flesh out further backstory and The Strain continues gaining momentum.

Quinlan holds court once more either in the present or past as his latter-day London life continues to intrigue. Heartbreak, anger, desperation and confrontation go some way to describing those segues into the past, which all colour that decision-making in the present. Fet meanwhile clings to Charlotte as their relationship takes on another dimension irrespective of Quinlan’s opinion. Penry-Jones brings a calculating and cold self-control to the character whilst proving that the choices he makes are borne of experience not warrior instinct.

‘The Strain’ Season 4 Review: Going out with a Bang

Just in time for the end, The Strain is the best it's ever been. After three seasons of build up and more than a little stalling, FX's pulpy vampire drama has finally arrived at the promised post-apocalypse thanks to Zack's (Max Charles) nuclear tantrum in the Season 3 finale. Lord knows Zack is the worst, but we should all be thanking the little monster-in-the-making because that tragic act of selfishness is exactly what the series needed to climb out of the narrative rut it's been stuck in for the last two seasons …
