The world’s most prominent online video convention might be up for sale. According to Adweek, Paramount Global has hired the bank Oaklins DeSilva+Phillips to explore a potential sale of VidCon, the gathering that descends on the Anaheim Convention Center each June.
The conversations still seem to be in relatively early stages. The exact price tag VidCon could fetch hasn’t been determined, and neither Paramount nor Oaklins DeSilva+Phillips have commented on the report. Adweek‘s source did indicate that Paramount is hoping to sell VidCon to a strategic buyer rather than a private equity firm, and the event series is not seen as a “distressed asset.”
A VidCon sale could allow Paramount to reinvest in its core business. The media conglomerate has not yet achieved profitability on Paramount+, the streaming service that adopted its current name in 2021. “This is a consideration that has almost certainly been influenced by Paramount’s extraneous plans,...

For generations, every reader repeated the same phrase, “The book is better than the movie.” The phrase became a critical reflex to some of the most mediocre adaptations until Hollywood decided to not cut corners and genuinely pay more attention to the source material. Isabela Merced was already one of the industry’s most sought-after young actors, and then she went on an unparalleled casting streak that includes the likes of Madame Web, Alien: Romulus, Superman: Legacy and The Last of Us season two. Exclusive: Uriah Shelton has been cast as a series regular in the Prime Video series Motorheads from writer/showrunner John A. Norris.
Shelton will portray Curtis, somewhat of an outsider and a skilled young mechanic who crafted his motorcycle from scratch. He strives to keep a distance from the world of his older brother, Ray.
As Deadline revealed in late November, the series also stars Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino and Melissa Collazo.
Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your very first car. That mobile game is Gubbins, a daily digital word puzzle where you “make cool words.”
Green says he found out about Gubbins through TikTok, when the game was still in early beta. He fell in love with it and looked up Studio Folly, its Melbourne-based developer, and ended up offering a “not insubstantial amount of money” for 10% ownership of Gubbins.
“I said, what if I buy 10% of your game? You’ll have some extra money to spend on making the game perfect, and then, once the game comes out, you’ll donate 10% of the revenue from the game to the Foundation to Decrease World Suck,” he explains.
Studio Folly agreed, and Green is now a 10% owner, with 10% of revenue going to the nonprofit world suck-decreasing...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is well past its peak.
All is not lost just yet, however, as there is still a panoply of costume heroes lining up to save the galaxy from danger or time travel or god-killers. But after 15 years of formulaic (and often satisfying!) films and series, a hard reset is long overdue, as well as a true passing of the torch. As IndieWire’s Kate Erbland noted in her C- review of “The Marvels,” it’s time to burn it all down and rebuild.
And that’s where Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) comes in.
“The Marvels” is as predictable and generally uninspired as the last several MCU projects before it. There’s a glitch in the fabric of space and time, a slapdash team of heroes from multiple titles, and an intergalactic CGI adventure. To its credit, “The Marvels” is a shockingly humane 105-minute movie, and in...

Books are being pulled from the library shelves of an Iowa school district following new legislation from Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, which purports to protect children from obscene material, The Gazette reports.
The new legislation, Senate File 496, prohibits “instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation in school districts, charter schools and innovation zone schools in kindergarten through grade six.” It requires that every book available to students be “age appropriate” and free of any “descriptions or visual depictions of a sex act.”

Popular YouTube content creator Grace Helbig announced that she has breast cancer in a video on Monday. In her video, she said she received the cancer diagnosis about a month ago.
Helbig said she was diagnosed with triple-positive breast cancer, which she called “super treatable and highly beatable.” She was diagnosed after noticing a small lump on her breast. She said in her video that she was unsure how to bring it up to her doctor because she was afraid of looking uneducated about her own body. But now, she urges everyone to go get checked.
“Get those lumps checked,” she said. “And don’t be afraid to ask the doctor what you think might be a stupid question.”
In addition to her YouTube channel, the 37-year-old internet personality and comedian co-hosts and co-created the podcast “This Might Get Weird” alongside Mamrie Hart. In 2015, Helbig hosted her own comedy talk show on E!

In a nearly 14-minute video shared on YouTube Friday, Green said that he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system – a part of the body’s immune system.
The digital creator and vlogger, who has more than 7.5 million followers on TikTok, also said that it’s “one of the most treatable cancers.” Green noted that he will be starting chemotherapy treatment soon, which is expected to last around four months.
“It responds very well to treatment. The goal was cure. The procedure to get there is fairly well known, if unpleasant,” he explained. “It seems likely that we caught mine early. I’m still waiting on a scan to sort of confirm that.”

Reading Garth Risk Hallberg’s City on Fire well after its initial publication hype, it isn’t always clear what generated that buzz in the first place.
At 900+ pages, it’s an unquestionably ambitious first novel, but Hallberg’s distinctive prose feels mostly in service of obfuscation. It’s a book in which all manner of structural and aesthetic trickiness — an occasionally evocative ’70s setting, faux Dickensian sprawl, flashbacks, flash-forwards, digressions in the form of a punk rock ‘zine and a fireworks-obsessed piece of long-form journalism — offer distraction from the run-of-the-mill mysteries that make up the core storyline. It’s full of vivid moments, but less full of effective twists or compelling characters.
Watching Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Apple TV+ adaptation of City on Fire, which arrives with no particular hype, it isn’t always clear what connection it even has to the book in the first place.

Update: In addition to Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu are also joining the film, with the story described as "a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe."
The most recent challenge that Isabela Merced faced was to her romantic life in Rosaline. She'll face an entirely different level of threat in a new project, as she's joining Fede Álvarez' Alien movie.
Cailee Spaeny is aboard to star in the movie, which is still being kept in the dark aside from the fact that it'll feature the usual assortment of xenomorphs and their associated terrors.
Alvarez wrote the new film, and is at work on it, with Alien overlord Ridley Scott producing. It won't directly connect with either the original movies or Scott's prequel films, but it is set in the same universe.

Nat Wolff has been really famous a couple of times. The first was in 2007, when his show The Naked Brothers Band (based on his real-life musical group) became Nickelodeon’s most popular kids’ series — that was the kind of fame that got him bullied at his New York City middle school. Then, in 2015, he led Paper Towns, the big-screen adaptation of John Green’s blockbuster YA novel — that was the screaming-teen-girls-following-you-on-a-global-press-tour variety.
Now he’s preparing for the release of a series that features his first starring TV role — and a run alongside Parker Posey and Hari Nef in an off-Broadway adaptation of The Seagull/Woodstock, NY — and feeling further from those days than ever. “A couple of girls followed me home from rehearsals the other day, and it made me realize I barely think about being a child star,” says the 28-year-old over late-morning shrimp tacos in Times Square.

In April 2020, Hank and John Green‘s Crash Course channel partnered with Arizona State University to launch Study Hall. The program offered college-level education in an at-home setting and eventually evolved into its own channel.

YouTube is taking back top billing at VidCon. It will serve as the title sponsor for VidCon’s main event, which will return to the Anaheim Convention Center on June 21, 2023.
2023 will be YouTube’s eighth year as the title sponsor of VidCon’s flagship gathering. The platform previously held that distinction between 2013 and 2019. In 2022, after a three-year hiatus, VidCon returned to Anaheim with TikTok as its title sponsor. The video app was also slated as the sponsor of VidCon 2021 before that edition of the convention was canceled due to Covid-19.
Though YouTube was not the title sponsor of VidCon in 2022, it still had a strong presence at the event. At the YouTube Shorts Drive-Thru, guests picked up snacks inspired by influencers and giveaways from MrBeast‘s Feastables brand. That activation was spearheaded by the YouTube Marketing team in order to promote YouTube’s TikTok-esque format.

“The common mayfly has a life expectancy of just one day,” announced the voiceover in a memorable Vodafone advert from the early Noughties. “But is he miserable about it? Not one bit.” This insect’s life, repurposed as metaphor, has come to represent the flickering flame that is human existence. Life, getting shorter with every passing minute. It’s no surprise then that Scottish novelist Andrew O’Hagan used “mayflies” as the title of his 2020 novel about two friends working through a lifetime of memories as the light fades, a story that’s adapted this Christmas as a BBC One two-part special.

Five Nights at Freddy’s. The Owl House. Amphibia. Gravity Falls. Steven Universe.
All of these things share one commonality: people on the internet love them.
Like, really love them.
If you want to know just how strong that love is, you can watch Ryder Burgin‘s YouTube videos.
Burgin has been on YouTube for more than a decade, and in 2013, he found his niche. He produced a three-minute video called A Brief History of the Vlogbrothers, chronicling brothers Hank and John Green‘s shared channel and the fandom–Nerdfighteria–that rose up around it. In the years since that video, Burgin has produced over 200 more uploads tracing the origins of creator groups like Smosh and the fan fervor around various shows and video games.

Hank and John Green‘s Awesome Socks Club is back in business.
Well, to be clear, it was never out of business. It was just closed to new customers because it was worried about balancing supply with demand, Hank explained today in a series of tweets.
Hank and older brother John—both Og YouTubers and the co-founders of VidCon, Dftba Records, etcetera—started Awesome Socks Club in November 2020. It’s a subscription service that costs 13.75 per month, and in exchange for that 13.75, you get one pair of socks designed by an independent artist.
From that, we created the Awesome Socks Club, a monthly subscription that sends you a pair of socks designed by a different independent artist every month, with 100 of after tax profit going to charity. https://t.co/BoiRFkR4ZK pic.twitter.com/ZxR9XQ6Lsa
