Warning: Major spoilers for The Regime episode four "Midnight Feast" below!
Keplinger's introduction in The Regime episode four disappoints with a quick exit that underutilizes Hugh Grant's appearance. The series missed an opportunity for a compelling showdown between Keplinger and Chancellor Elena, leaving viewers wanting more. Grant's charisma and chemistry with Kate Winslet hinted at a more intriguing direction for The Regime, cut short by his character's demise.
The Regime episode four finally introduced Hugh Grant's Keplinger after much hype, but the resolution of his storyline wasted a more interesting direction for the finale. The Regime's cast features big names like Kate Winslet and Andrea Riseborough, with the HBO miniseries being a dark satire about an authoritarian regime. At its core, the show is a sitcom, with The Regime's unnamed country slowly crumbling from within due to the vanity and ego of its ruler, Chancellor Elena Vernham (Winslet).

In HBO’s The Regime, Kate Winslet stars as a foreign dictator who rules with an iron fist and crushes any sign of dissent — and her governing style might seem familiar to American voters, director Stephen Frears says.
When asked by The Hollywood Reporter what one of the show’s messages might be, Frears was blunt: “Don’t vote for Trump.” The celebrated director, who helmed three of the season’s six episodes, sees parallels between Winslet’s grandstanding, narcissistic chancellor Elena and the current Republican frontrunner, noting that “the reality of Trump [returning to the presidency] has increased and grown stronger” since the show began development.

If anyone reading this is, as I am, out there on the dating apps and watching Masterpiece on PBS’ Alice & Jack (airing Sundays at 10/9c), you probably also are wondering why Domhnall Gleeson’s character keeps coming back for more.

Writer-director Brandon Cronenberg proves a proper chip off the old block with his second feature, Possessor, a brilliantly directed and startlingly original sci-fi horror that’s worthy of instant classic status. In fact, it’s fully deserving of a place alongside his father’s very best films, it’s that good.
Opening with an immediately unsettling stabbing sequence, the film centres on Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough), a seasoned assassin who’s able to “possess” unsuspecting strangers and use their bodies to commit murder-for-hire, thanks to brain-implant technology developed by her employers. However, repeated exposure to the procedure has taken a cumulative psychological toll on Vos and she’s beginning to have trouble separating her own psyche from that of her unsuspecting hosts after a job.

Joseph's haunting words motivate Elena to take back control and pursue the Faban Corridor annexation. Elena's unhealthy attachment to her father drives her to prove herself to him, even a year after his death.
The most shocking scene of The Regime episode 3 involves the chancellor's late father, which pushes her to make a bold decision about the nation's future. The Regime cast Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts and Andrea Riseborough in a dark satire about a crumbling authoritarian regime. Winslet plays the egotistical ruler of The Regime's unnamed country, who, lacking any real vision for the future, turns to Schoenaerts' troubled soldier Herbert Zubak. Together, the unlikely duo shape a plan for the country that seems more likely to ruin it.

If you look through some of the boldest, most ambitious works of the past few years, chances are you’ll find Andrea Riseborough on the call sheet.
The English actress has been involved in everything from Alejandro González Iñárritu’s dark comedy “Birdman” and Tom Ford’s neo-noir psychological thriller “Nocturnal Animals” to Panos Cosmatos’ action horror “Mandy” and Will Tracy’s bizarre political dramedy “The Regime.”
All of these memorable performances start with Oscar-nominated Riseborough’s dedication to keeping “an open mind.”
“I have no idea what’s good for me or what I should explore next. But when it’s in front of you, you know it,” Riseborough told TheWrap at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 winter tour. “It’s far better to not to force something into existence, if you know what I mean, because even if it comes to fruition, it lacks authenticity. Alice & Jack is the latest TV love story that spans several years. The Masterpiece on PBS series premieres on March 17 and follows the 15-year relationship between the haunted, thorny Alice (Andrea Riseborough) and quirky, sensitive Jack (Domhnall Gleeson). Their connection the moment they meet is something they can’t ever shake. Through marriages, a child, and deaths, Alice and Jack move in and out of each other’s lives. Sounds a lot like One Day, right? Well, Alice & Jack feels like the moody and jaded older sister in the enduring love stories family. One Day and Past Lives give off serious middle-child energy with all that yearning and Love, Rosie is the whimsical, funny youngest kid. Meanwhile, This Is Us is both mom and dad. There’s not a bit of rom-com in Alice & Jack, and that’s a good thing. It’s messy and raw. Alice...

Love stories don’t always get the rom-com edit. Alice & Jack, premiering March 17 on Masterpiece on PBS, is a modern love story that explores all the best and worst moments of a relationship that spans 15 years. “I think perhaps in episodic stories, I crave seeing characters whose relationships reflect more accurately the mess or the messy fallout of love,” series star Andrea Riseborough tells TV Insider. “Alice & Jack is a piece that is about two people who are getting things so horribly wrong and really causing such a mess in their wake but are unavoidably linked.” Despite complications from the start, Alice (Riseborough) and Jack (Domhnall Gleeson) form a “deep love” that’s “completely uncontrollable.” Riseborough adds, “It’s like, as a friend of mine would say, trying to ride a squirrel. There’s nothing predictable about it, but there’s something… Love can look like so many things,...

The Regime is a political satire set in a fictional country, drawing inspiration from real-world politicians and authoritarian nations. Filmed in Vienna, the series brings authenticity through European locations, contributing to the show's unique setting and storyline. Showrunner Will Tracy aimed to create an original story, avoiding direct parallels to real events to maintain the show's comedic intentions.
Created by Will Tracy, The Regime is an HBO original series that debuted on March 3, 2024. Directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs, the 6-episode drama stars Kate Winslet as Elena Vernham, the chancellor of a fictitious Central European country whose authoritarian hold is beginning to slip away. To stabilize the nation and maintain world order, Chancellor Vernham turns to Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), an ill-reputed soldier looking for public redemption.
Although The Regime takes place in an unnamed fictional country and focuses on fabricated characters, the drama draws inspiration from several real-life politicians and authoritarian nations.

The Regime series has been billed as a six-episode limited series, but that doesn't necessarily mean the story is over. As in the case of HBO's Big Little Lies and The White Lotus, if a limited series is successful enough, producers and networks will bend over backward to find a way to make a second season. Kate Winslet on the importance of intimacy coordinators ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Kate Winslet has played different kinds of roles in her career. From Titanic to Mare of Easttown, the Oscar-winning actress has made a massive fanbase for herself with her impeccable performances and story choices. Recently, the actress shed light on the importance of having intimacy coordinators to film intimate scenes in movies. Winslet shared how uncomfortable she felt when these professionals weren’t hired earlier in her career.
In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, Kate Winslet said, “I would have benefited from an intimacy coordinator every single time I had to do a love scene or be partially naked or even a kissing scene. It would have been nice to have had someone in my corner, because I always had to stand up for myself.”

The Regime's early promise didn't match the harsh reality of plummeting reviews after its premiere on HBO, sinking its Rotten Tomatoes score. Kate Winslet's powerful performance couldn't save The Regime from criticism over its weak writing and lackluster satirical execution. The disappointing 57% Rotten Tomatoes score breaks Winslet's streak of critical acclaim for HBO miniseries, with even lower audience reception.
Kate Winslet’s new HBO series The Regime received critical acclaim before its release, but since its premiere on March 3, its once-promising Rotten Tomatoes score has quickly plummeted. Created by Will Tracy, the co-writer of The Menu, The Regime chronicles a year inside the palace of the collapsing authoritarian regime of a fictional Central European nation. Winslet stars as Chancellor Elena Vernham, a paranoid autocrat who begins to rely on the advice of a recently disgraced soldier played by Matthias Schoenaerts. The limited series will run for six episodes, concluding...

Warning: Major spoilers for The Regime episode 1 "Memorial" below!
Elena's paranoia about her health is tied to her father's death from a lung disease, which she feels she has inherited. Some in The Chancellor's cabinet are using her fear of mold and toxic air as a tool to manipulate her. The finale of The Regime's episode 1 reveals that Elena's illness is largely imaginary, and she takes back her power.
Kate Winslet's Chancellor Elena Vernham suffers from a mystery illness in The Regime, but is it real or imagined? Winslet returns to HBO following the acclaim that greeted 2021's Mare of Easttown, but with a very different type of show. The Regime casts Winslet as the Chancellor of an autocracy that is slowly unraveling from within. While more broadly comedic than something like HBO's own Succession, it still deals with similar power games. While Kate Winslet's performance is front and center,...

Warning: Major spoilers for The Regime episode 1 below!
The Regime's first episode ends with Kate Winslet's Chancellor reasserting control with a defiant speech after rejecting an American mining deal. Victory Day reveals the dysfunction in Elena's regime and the nation's troubled history. Herbert becomes Elena's confidant, encouraging her to take back control from her cabinet.
The first episode of HBO's The Regime ends with Kate Winslet's Chancellor delivering a rousing speech to her people - but only after suffering through a lot of dysfunction. This political satire marks Winslet's third HBO miniseries, though according to The Regimes' current Rotten Tomatoes score, it won't be nearly as acclaimed. The show takes place in a fictional Central European nation run by an authoritarian regime. Winslet plays Chancellor Elena Vernham, who despite trying to project calm and grace to the world, is overcome with personal insecurities behind the scenes.

Kate Winslet is back on TV and this time, she’s playing a character she’s truly never played before.
The opening scene of HBO’s The Regime sets the scene. The geopolitical satire opens somewhere in middle Europe. The music is ominous, then quirky, when a soldier (played by Matthias Schoenaerts) is brought to the grand palace of the populist ruler of a fictional country, where he is told they are renovating to contain and rid the air of toxins. “Never breathe in her direction. Stay calm. Don’t vomit,” he’s instructed before meeting Chancellor Elena Vernham. In this first meeting, Winslet as Elena is poised and direct.
Given where the rest of the episode — and the season — goes, it’s safe to say that this first impression is not an accurate one. Elena commands attention when she is seen in state-controlled media and performing on stage for...

Plot: After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham has grown increasingly paranoid and unstable when she turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak, as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor continues to grow, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in both the palace and the country fracturing around her.
Review: Politics, violence, sex, and humor are all elements that have made quality programming ranging from Game of Thrones to Veep. After spending years in development, FX’s “Shōgun” made its long-awaited debut this week to glowing reviews. Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, the exquisite limited series — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Hulu –turns Vancouver into feudal Japan as it recounts the life-changing experiences of Pilot Major John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), an English sailor who becomes shipwrecked and finds himself at the center of a violent power struggle between Lord Toranaga and the four other regents with whom he is meant to rule until their recently deceased leader’s heir comes of age. Exceptionally cunning, Toranaga believes he can use Blackthorne, whom the Japanese call Anjin, as leverage, so he takes him into custody, using Anna Sawai’s loyal Mariko as an interpreter. The resulting drama is a beautifully produced, captivating epic that is unlike anything else you’ll see on TV this year,...

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.
First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. From beloved Paddington director Paul King, the film follows the adventures of a young Willy Wonka as he looks to become the world’s best (and weirdest) chocolatier. Later in March on Max, there’s also Dream Scenario, a highly-regarded comedy boasting Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams for unknown reasons, and who naturally becomes very famous as a result of this strange phenomena.
Series-wise, the biggest show on Max this month is The Regime. It packs a solid cast, including Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant, and tells the story of “life within the walls of a modern...

Max is known for its quality television shows, and the selections next month are most definitely worth watching. However, given the level of superb programming the platform consistently offers, there isn’t always a slew of shows to choose from, especially when they’re HBO or Max originals. Luckily, the shows joining the service next month are highly anticipated and will hopefully deliver.
With shows such as True Detective: Night Country, The Last of Us, and The White Lotus currently on hiatus, viewers should look no further than what Max has to offer for March. While the premise for each upcoming series is wildly different from the aforementioned shows, the same level of fandom is possible. Both forthcoming shows are limited series, although one is political satire while the other is a heartbreaking documentary. Nonetheless, they can indeed be enjoyed by everyone. Here is every TV series coming to Max...

With a premiere-heavy March ahead at HBO, there will be plenty to stream this month on Max!
The first Sunday of March brings the premiere of HBO’s new six-episode limited series “The Regime,” starring HBO alum Kate Winslet. Throughout the rest of the month, don’t rest on the streamer’s long list of library additions, like the recent musical origin story “Wonka” or A24’s sleeper hit (so to speak) “Dream Scenario”; and be sure some of the HBO’s biggest premieres, including “The Girls on the Bus” starring Melissa Benoist and Ramy Youssef’s “More Feelings” make it onto your calendar.
Plus, there’s no March without March Madness! For the first time, Max will stream all of the 2024 [NCAA] Division Men’s Basketball Championship live games and studio coverage airing on TBS, TNT, and truTV, including the NCAA Men’s Final Four National Semifinals and Men’s National Championship.

In the new HBO limited series The Regime, Kate Winslet plays Elena Vernham, the autocratic ruler of a small nation located somewhere in “Middle Europe.” Most of the action takes place inside Elena’s palace, and we frequently pay visits to a briefing room where Elena berates her cowed advisers. The room, with its huge round table and circular light fixture, very much resembles Ken Adam’s iconic war room set from the Cold War classic Dr. Strangelove. It is probably meant as a nod to the greatest piece of political satire ever filmed.

Kate Winslet shines in HBO's The Regime as a bumbling dictator navigating a country on the brink of collapse. The series finds its rhythm as a subdued, bitterly funny political satire with an impressive turn from Winslet. Despite some struggles with balancing satire and political weight, Winslet's performance carries the series through authoritarian chaos.
A political leader being disconnected from the desires of the people they govern is not a foreign concept in 2024. It's not even a concept unfamiliar to HBO, whose new series The Regime premieres later this week. In it, Kate Winslet stars as the bumbling despot of a Middle European country on the brink of collapse. The series struggles to find its rhythm, but The Regime eventually hits its stride as a subdued, bitterly funny political satire with an unsurprisingly stellar turn from Winslet.

Brought to you by some of the team behind Succession is The Regime, HBO’s latest uber-ambitious prestige satire. Elevated by a never-better Kate Winslet and a solid supporting cast, the miniseries is quite uneven, but when all of its elements work together in harmony, it’s very entertaining and provocative.
The Regime follows the authoritarian chancellor of an unnamed European country as her control over her people begins to fall apart behind the closed doors of her deteriorating palace. For fans of British political satire, this is filled with intriguing ideas, but the short episode count creates erratic pacing and tone.
The first episode of the series, directed by the legendary Stephen Frears, has a dry humor about it — very reminiscent of the British stylings of Armando Iannucci. In fact, the stylings of the first half of the show make it almost surprising that the satirist himself wasn’t...

Hulu is no stranger to quality films, and its offerings slated for release next month are no exception. In fact, the list is brimming with a slew of films anyone would enjoy watching. With a myriad of genres ranging from science fiction to heartfelt dramas, viewers are likely to find at least one movie they will want to add to their ever-growing watchlist. Winter is coming to an end, and the snow outside might be melting, but Hulu’s March movies are surely alluring enough to keep viewers glued to the couch.
Fans of Michael Keaton and trippy dramas will definitely want to check out one of his best films. However, a sci-fi masterpiece by Denis Villeneuve will be up your alley for those who prefer epic sagas with stunning visuals. Lovers of heartfelt emotional movies will also be in luck with two very different films that may be appealing.

Kate Winslet and the stars of HBO’s The Regime are celebrating the show’s premiere!
The event was held on Monday (February 26) at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
Kate was joined by co-stars Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Guillaume Gallienne.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Regime: “The darkly comedic six-episode series tells the story of life within the walls of a modern authoritarian regime as it begins to unravel. After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham (Winslet) has grown increasingly paranoid and unstable when she turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor continues to grow, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in both the palace and the country fracturing around her.”
