David Ayer is following up the success of The Beekeeper with a new dramatic thriller from producer Damien Chazelle.
Ayer is set to direct Paramount Pictures’ Heart of the Beast from a script by Cameron Alexander. The feature, which has been in development since 2017, follows a former Navy Seal and his combat dog amid their attempt to find civilization after getting stranded deep in the Alaskan terrain.
Producers include Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton of Wild Chickens Productions, in addition to Ayer and Chris Long of Cedar Park Entertainment.
Ayer most recently helmed Amazon MGM Studios’ The Beekeeper, the Jason Statham-led thriller that surpassed $150 million at the global box office. The filmmaker, who wrote Training Day and worked on the script for The Fast and the Furious, has previously directed Fury, Suicide Squad and Bright.

David Ayer recently turned heads with The Beekeeper, a seemingly run-of-the-mill Jason Statham action film that turned out to be a strange mish-mash of ideas and bold choices that still feels like a fever dream. Ayer has had some hits under his belt, but as a whole, the filmmaker’s resume has some divisive receptions among them. This brings us to the interesting partnering with the Whiplash, La La Land and Babylon director Damien Chazelle. As Chazelle attempts to recover from Babylon‘s flopping, the First Man director will only be producing the new film that Ayer will helm.
Deadline reports that Ayer will be directing Heart of the Beast. The film will come from Chazelle and spouse Olivia Hamilton’s company, Wild Chicken Productions, as part of their first look deal with Paramount. Ayer and Chris Long will also produce alongside under their Cedar Park Entertainment banner. The screenplay comes from scribe Cameron Alexander,...

Deadline reports that Amazon is developing Halcyon, a sci-fi thriller based on Christopher Long’s graphic novel Hiding In Time. Halcyon comes from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who will executive produce through his Metronome Film Company alongside Andrew Mittman’s 1.21 banner.
Halcyon is a “paranoid sci-fi thriller in which the Witness Protection Program relocates families to various eras in time. The series unravels a conspiracy that emerges when this seemingly infallible system is breached.” Sounds interesting. In addition to producing Halcyon, Colin Trevorrow will also direct the pilot of the series. Davey Holmes (Shameless) will serve as showrunner of the project, and will executive produce alongside Trevorrow, Mittman, and Lloyd Braun.

Jason Statham must have enjoyed working with David Ayer on “The Beekeeper.” He’s re-upping to headline Ayer’s next action film, “Levon’s Trade.”
Based on the novel by famed comics author (and the creator of Batman arch-foe Bane) Chuck Dixon, Sylvester Stallone will adapt the crime thriller. This marks a rare occasion whereby Stallone writes a film in which he doesn’t star. The 2013 Statham action drama “Homefront” remains an underrated gem of a genre flick.

The project marks Stallone’s first screenplay since Rambo: Last Blood in 2019 and Creed II in 2018. Today brings a must-watch trailer for an upcoming movie that should absolutely be on everyone's radar heading into 2024. MGM has unveiled the first trailer for "The Beekeeper," a movie we first heard about back in late 2021 but has finally come to fruition -- and it's even more bonkers than anyone could have possibly anticipated. It stars action man Jason Statham as, well, a beekeeper of sorts who ends up carving out an unbelievable path of vengeance. Trust me: This is one of those "you have to see it to believe it" trailers.
The film is directed by David Ayer, of "Suicide Squad" fame, and marks his most high-profile directorial effort in some time, as the film is being released wide theatrically by MGM early next year. And it's not hard to see why MGM jumped on this one, as it looks like it could catch on like "Taken" or "John Wick...

The internet is abuzz with anticipation for David Ayer’s forthcoming action film The Beekeeper. MGM debuted a red band trailer for the hard-hitting thrill ride on Wednesday, featuring Jason Statham as an elite ass-kicking machine with an axe to grind.
In The Beekeeper, one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.” Ayer directs from a script by Kurt Wimmer. While Statham is the star of the show, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons complete the primary cast.
In The Beekeeper trailer, Statham’s Mr. Clay lives a tranquil life as a beekeeper on a picturesque plot of land. However, when a shadowy organization swindles the kind landowner out of her savings, Clay trades the serenity of farm life for vengeance to...

The Patient (FX) The Patient
Most episodes of FX’s The Patient stick with the perspective of Steve Carell’s Alan Strauss, a therapist held captive by a serial killer portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. But in the seventh episode, “Kaddish,” the camera zooms out. As Alan says the Jewish prayer of mourning for both his dead wife and himself, director Gwyneth Horder-Payton photographs Carell through a rain-stained window in the basement room where he’s imprisoned.
“It just felt like the time to pull back the cameras and observe this human being in his own misery,” says executive producer Chris Long.
Backlit by light pouring in through glass bricks, Carell stands solemnly holding a piece of paper his captor printed out for him with the words of the kaddish. It’s an emotionally fraught moment, but Long and creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields thought it best to leave the character in his loneliness.

The explosive growth of film and television production in New Mexico has broadened perceptions about its eclectic landscape in a short amount of time, but despite increasingly well-documented evidence to the contrary, some misconceptions stubbornly persist.
“One of the main comments I hear is ‘I didn’t know New Mexico has trees,’” says Amber Dodson, director of the state’s film office.
While the state’s natural elements are undoubtedly beautiful and have stood in as a range of locales for countless film and TV productions, they’re only one factor in the state’s transformation from a short-term production location to a true hotspot for studios looking to put down roots.
New Mexico first established its production tax incentives in 2003, at the same time many states discovered the economic benefits of attracting entertainment industry business. State leadership quickly began developing infrastructure to support production.

Apple TV+ thriller “Suspicion” is set to hit the sales block in Cannes at this year’s MipTV market.
Keshet International has revealed that the eight-part series starring Uma Thurman will headline its drama slate at the spring TV market in France, which kicks off on April 17. The Israeli TV distributor will shop linear rights for the series.
Apple TV+ commissioned Keshet U.K. to produce “Suspicion,” which is based on the popular Israeli series “False Flag” and launched on the service in February 2022. Its sales foray marks one of the rare instances where an original on a streamer (that’s still available globally on the platform) has been sold on the open market for linear rights.
In recent years, major SVODs have been focused on keeping originals on their own platforms for extensive periods in order to drive subscribers. However, in this case, it’s Keshet International that holds...

Depressed therapist meets obsessed patient with homicidal tendencies. What could go wrong?
That’s the device in the new limited series “The Patient,” from “The Americans” showrunners Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg with Chris Long as the series director. Over ten short episodes, widower Dr. Alan Strauss (Steve Carrell) treats high functioning serial killer Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson) in his Los Angeles office. The tension escalates when Sam abducts Strauss, taking the good doctor home for intensive daily therapy – and shackling the shrink to the bed.
Can their discussions in the remote basement in-law apartment strangle Sam’s demons? Will Dr. Strauss emerge victorious, unscathed and with the subject of a mind-blowing memoir? We shall see.
This “Hannibal” set up, the dramatic but artificial precipitating event, seems like a long way to go to drill down into what makes killer and healer tick.
For me, the juice is in the doctor’s Jewish background,...

I do not suspect he will enjoy The Patient, in the same way that surgeons typically can’t stand to watch hospital dramas, cops dislike police shows, etc. But as...

Plot: Dr. Alan Strauss, a therapist mourning the death of his wife, takes on an enigmatic new client. As the two men wrestle with very different, individual problems, their professional relationship is transformed by a choice that binds them deeply together.
Review: Television series have long explored the worlds of serial killers and psychotherapy. Usually, killers are fodder for police procedurals and thriller series but every now and then there is a unique take on the subject that upends convention. From Dexter to Mindhunter to Hannibal, serial killers have often been portrayed as monsters or deviant human beings that the masses struggle to comprehend. The new limited series The Patient tries an angle of the expected serial killer story that somewhat succeeds thanks to the writing of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. Echoing the dramatic intensity of their riveting espionage series The Americans, The Patient is an unexpected twist on a familiar genre.

While most showrunners are content to use Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” for soundtrack shorthand, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg prefer slightly deeper cuts from the Canadian singer-spiritualist.
The duo potently utilized “Who By Fire,” with its ties to the Hebrew “Unetaneh Tokef” prayer, at the climax of the fourth season of The Americans. They return to Cohen again with a song that I won’t spoil featured pivotally in their new FX limited series The Patient, which will air exclusively on Hulu.
It’s easy to see why Fields and Weisberg respond to Cohen (or why their music supervisor thinks their shows and Cohen’s songs are a good match). Like Cohen, Fields and Weisberg are engaged in their own blending of the profane and the sacred, using the trappings of pulpy genres as a delivery mechanism for richer, more haunted storytelling that...

For “The Americans” masterminds Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg’s latest series at FX, the duo decided to make one of the main characters Jewish — but have him played by Steve Carell, who is not Jewish.
Amid an increase in scrutiny of casting choices like this made for film and TV projects, the producers explained their personal reasoning for the move to reporters during a virtual panel for “The Patient” at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Tuesday.
“When we came up with the original idea, the character wasn’t originally Jewish,” Weisberg said. “And then you start, as you always do, looking for ways to add specificity and depth. And we came up with that idea pretty quickly. But it allowed us to tap into things from our own lives … [it] added just certain dimensions and it became really a lot more fun to write in a certain way after that.

A therapist, Alan Strauss, is held prisoner by a patient, Sam Fortner, who reveals himself to be a serial killer. Sam has an unusual therapeutic demand for Alan: curb his homicidal urges.
That’s the premise behind The Patient, a 10-episode limited series debuting Aug. 30 on Hulu. Its official trailer is out today.
Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg (The Americans) are the team behind the series, serving as cocreators and EPs.
In order to survive, Alan (Steve Carell) must unwind Sam’s disturbed mind (played by Domhnall Gleeson) and stop him from killing again… but Sam refuses to address critical topics, like his mother, “Candace” (Linda Emond). Alone in captivity, Alan excavates his own past through memories of his old therapist, “Charlie” (David Alan Grier), and grapples with waves of his own repressed troubles – the recent death of his wife, “Beth” (Laura Niemi), and the painful estrangement from his religious son,...

Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson star as a therapist and the serial killer client holding him hostage in the newly released trailer for FX and Hulu’s 10-episode limited series, “The Patient.” The project is set to premiere Aug. 30.
The chilling clip features earlier sessions between lan Strauss (Carell) and Sam Fortner (Gleeson) as the latter describes his quick temper. What seemingly begins as a routine session with a patient eventually devolves into a nightmare, as Fortner reveals himself to be a serial killer who demands help to curb his homicidal urges. “Successful therapy requires a safe environment without anything like fear hanging over every session,” Carell’s character says, as threatening and nightmarish images of chains, bodies and panic rooms flash onscreen.
