The BBC, Netflix Amazon are among those reviving style makeover shows

Anyone who wanted to know a scrunchie from a shoulder pad tuned into The Clothes Show on BBC in the 1980s and 90s. It demystified the fashion world for the masses, and once pulled in nine million viewers. Now, TV is embracing fashion again – on all formats.

This week BBC One is showing You Are What You Wear, the channel’s first makeover show in 15 years. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime will release Making The Cut this Friday, where guest judges including the model Naomi Campbell and fashion editor Carine Roitfeld will award a winning designer $1m and, in a heartwarming moment of synergy, a deal for their clothes to be sold exclusively through Amazon. This follows hot on the heels of Netflix hit, Next In Fashion, where designers from around the world competed against each other to be the next big name.

Katherine Ryan: Roast Battle “really is a language of love”

Louisa Mellor Jan 15, 2018

We chatted to comedian Katherine Ryan about her new comedy roast show, how to take a joke, and the importance of context in stand-up…

Warning: contains one very rude word and one slightly less rude word.

“I think of it as an honour,” Katherine Ryan tells me, “I don’t see why anyone’s feelings would be hurt.” We’re talking about Roast Battle, a freshly imported Us show format in which pairs of comedians compete to tell the funniest and most insulting jokes about each other. Ryan, Russell Brand and presenter Jimmy Carr make up the judging panel on the UK version.

“It’s quite an honour to have someone read all about you,” Ryan continues. “You have to be really specific in your jokes, you have to know someone’s entire career,

Channel 4’s Naked Attraction picks up more viewers than Big Brother

Nude dating show garners 1.4 million viewers on first showing, beating both Channel 4 and BBC2 in the ratings

It was described as a “meat market” and a “Blind Date in a brothel”, but Channel 4’s nude dating show, Naked Attraction, rose to the occasion and drew more viewers than both BBC2 and Channel 5’s Big Brother on Monday night.

Naked Attraction, presented by Anna Richardson, featured copious full frontal nudity, like Sex Box but without the box (or the sex) or, if you prefer, How To Look Good Naked without the tiresome clothes shopping trip with Gok Wan.

Downton Abbey Gets Very Meta With Its Christmas Charity Short

Downton Abbey Gets Very Meta With Its Christmas Charity Short
Last year, Downton Abbey recruited George Clooney to participate in a charity holiday short for ITV's annual "Text Santa" appeal. This year, the short is even more spoof-tacular, with appearances by Gordon Ramsay (who's good mates with Mrs. Patmore, apparently) and noted British personalities Sir Bruce Forsyth, Gok Wan, Brenda Blethyn, Jim Broadbent, Michelle Keegan, and Warwick Davis joining in for the fun. The goal: Win over the Crawley family to become the Abbey's official Santa Claus. (Just give it to Carson, don't be daft, he really wants it!). The banter is cheeky, and the accents are merry. The sixth and final season will premiere on PBS on January 3.

X Factor's 9 most bonkers novelty acts: From Wagner's bongos to Jedward-mania

It's not just X Factor winners who keep us coming back year in, year out, it's the ludicrous novelty acts who make the show so memorable. In the words of Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, "it may be borderline bonkers, but I love that".

But since Louis Walsh's departure from the show, there's been a noticeable lack of novelty fodder. Damn them for employing judges who actually value musical talent over mad outfits and insane dance routines.

So in tribute to the former finalists who may have made us visibly cringe but always smile, here's nine of our favourites, brought to you in association with TalkTalk's new Bopheads app:

1. Wagner (2010)

"On my death bed, I shall remember this moment..."

A 54-year-old, Brazilian-born former lion owner from Dudley, Wagner Carrilho won Sharon Osbourne's heart with his sheer eccentricity at the Judges' Houses.

The Changing Room: Henry Holland gets a hooray from me

Channel 4’s latest fashion series sees the designer guide shoppers through ‘the trauma of the changing room’. Despite some lazy stereotyping, it’s refreshingly different from other makeover shows

Fashion designer Henry Holland has gone full-on Gok Wan as the presenter of Channel 4’s latest fashion makeover series, The Changing Room. With cameras rigged in changing rooms across the country (although mostly Birmingham, Oxford Street and London’s Westfield stores so far), Holland is seen lurking around high-street stores (“I’m dusting off my shop-assistant’s badge!”) in order to guide shoppers through “the trauma of the changing room”. Meanwhile, we’re invited to sit back and watch shoppers strip down to their undies like a bunch of sartorially minded peeping toms.

In the age of Asos, no one uses changing rooms any more – but we do watch a lot of reality TV, and that’s where the

Amanda Holden and Gok Wan got very excited by David Cameron's jogging cameo on This Morning

David Cameron brightened up Amanda Holden's morning yesterday, when he jogged past her as she presented This Morning live on London's South Bank.

The presenter and guest host Gok Wan were enjoying the sunshine, hosting a food segment of the daily magazine show outside, when Holden learned that the prime minister was nearby.

Hearing the news, she excitedly told viewers: "David Cameron is jogging on the South Bank!" before proceeding to call out his name and invite him to join them on the set.

Wan, who was filling in for Phillip Schofield, unfortunately had his offer of a healthy smoothie turned down by Cameron.

As the moment passed - and attention went back to guests the Hemsley sisters - Holden reflected on the morning's excitement, saying: "I can't believe that!"

Still buzzing from the moment, she later described the prime minister as being "in quite good nick".
