Tom Morello, Amanda Palmer, Speedy Ortiz, Kimya Dawson, and more have signed an open letter calling for the restoration of net neutrality, stressing the benefits of an open internet for artists.
Net neutrality, as initially codified during the Obama administration in 2015, broadly established regulations for a more open, accessible internet: The rules ensured that internet providers couldn’t do things like restrict access to certain content, slow or accelerate connection speeds, or hamstring connectivity for customers who didn’t pay a premium fee.

The following is an editorial written by actors Emma Thompson and Gael García Bernal.
Don’t get us wrong: we believe in the cautionary power of dystopian stories. As actors, we have both brought to life worlds ravaged by uncontrollable disease, lethal weather, and mad kings. This form of art has a long and rich tradition: it acts as a warning of what is to come if society does not change course. But in times like ours, we’ve been feeling the urge to experiment in something a little more challenging: utopian art. After all, you don’t need much imagination for dystopia these days.
Right now, things are bleak, and likely to get bleaker. The first debate of the U.S. presidential election felt like it was scripted to induce existential nausea — which fits with the historical moment we’re in. We’ve seen raging fires and storms collide...

Over 100 well-known names – including writers, actors, directors and musicians – have signed a pledge supporting Lorde's decision not to perform in Israel.
The statement was published in The Guardian following backlash over the Kiwi singer’s cancellation of her concert in Tel Aviv. It is a direct response to a full page ad published in the Washington Post on January 1 which called Lorde a bigot and also attacked her homeland of New Zealand.
“We deplore the bullying tactics being used to defend injustice against Palestinians and to suppress an artist’s freedom of conscience. We support Lorde’s right to take a stand,” reads the letter in The Guardian. "Shmuley Boteach, the author and promoter of the advert, supports Israel’s illegal settlements and wrote last month on Breitbart to thank Donald Trump for “electrifying the world” with his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in defiance of international law.

Back in 2007, writer David Gallaher and artist Steve Ellis released High Moon online, introducing comic readers to a tiny Texas town in the Old West where things with sharp teeth went "bump" in the night. Now, nearly one decade later, Papercutz's Super Genius is celebrating the latest full moon by resurrecting the werewolf Western comic series.
Super Genius announced that they will release two remastered graphic novels of the pre-existing High Moon comic series, as well as a third volume of new stories that will finish the series the way Gallaher and Ellis intended. The first volume, High Moon: Bullet Holes and Bite Marks, will be unleashed this October, while the second volume is slated for a May 2018 release, followed by the new third volume. Here's what High Moon writer David Gallaher shared with us about the series:

Jay Z is calling for change. In a powerful multimedia op-ed published by the New York Times, the rapper calls the "so-called war on drugs" an "epic fail" and focuses on how racial injustice has contributed to the problem. Jay Z (real name: Shawn Carter) wrote and narrated the video, which plays out as artist Molly Crababble's images are displayed on the screen. Jay Z has called America’s War on Drugs an “epic fail” in a New York Times op-ed published Thursday. The rapper — real name Shawn Carter — also provided the voiceover in a video illustrated by artist Molly Crabapple. In the video, which is posted above, Carter points out certain hypocrisies he’s observed from both his youth and present day. He begins in 1986, when Ronald Reagan took Richard Nixon’s anti-narcotics baton and ran with it. Those were the rapper’s coming of age days, when he admits to selling drugs in and around the Marcy Project. Jay Z goes on to point out.

Steve Niles, Matt Pizzolo, and Brett Gurewitz are getting into the comic book publishing game with the new comic book company, Black Mask Studios.
They want the label to be indicative of their punk roots, and put the onus on the creators.
Pizzolo: “Comics has a troubled history with its treatment of creators…our goal is to bring the supportive ethic of record labels like Epitaph, Dischord, and Revelation to comics.” Niles: “Brett, Matt, and I all came up in the Diy punk scene…And we’re bringing that kind of attitude to this… the constructive part about supporting voices who are talking about real things but in a bold and exciting way. We’re not afraid to bring in activism and politics and counterculture. What publisher today could be bringing out the next V For Vendetta? Nobody.“

We first told you about Black Mask Studios, a hybrid digital/physical release model that planned on distributing content through multiple pipelines including mass market and direct-to-fan as well as the existing comics market, way back in March of 2012.
Today some big names have come together to make it official.
THR is reporting that Black Mask Studios -- the recently formed transmedia publishing company founded by comic book writer Steve Niles, entrepreneur and transmedia production shingle Halo-8's Matt Pizzolo and Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz -- has recruited some of comics' biggest guns to help create its first wave of comic book titles.
Among the luminaries participating are Watchmen co-creator Alan Moore, V for Vendetta artist David Lloyd, Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus creator Art Spiegelman, The Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard, Mike Allred (Madman), Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night), J.M. Two hundred and twenty five years ago today, the final draft of the Constitution of the United States was adopted by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The First Amendment of the Constitution states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
We mention this because earlier today, comic book artist Molly Crabapple (that’s her artwork above, previously published in The Nation) peaceably assembled on the streets of New York City for the anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Apparently, the NYPD insisted everyone get on the pavement, and once they were on the pavement they were arrested.
Molly live-tweeted her arrest on her Twitter account. Warren Ellis started the hashtag #FreeMollyCrabapple,...

30 Days of Night writer Steve Niles and Epitaph Records CEO/Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz are joining Halo-8 president/Godkiller writer Matt Pizzolo to form new comics outfit Black Mask Studios with the aim of disrupting the comics market.
From the Press Release:
Niles (pictured) will serve as creative director with Pizzolo as president, and Gurewitz's Epitaph Records will power the operation.
"Comics have become this monopolized walled garden where you're only allowed to grow two things: superheroes and movie treatments," said Pizzolo. "We're going to open a new space outside the entrenched market where we can cultivate more subversive, experimental, and literary comics to reach broader audiences."
"With both Godkiller and 30 Days of Night, we discovered a large community of readers outside the comic market who really had no idea how to get comics," said Niles. "This is a way to reach those people again and expand the comic reading audience.

Hurricane Irene is on its way to the East Coast right now, and everyone's got their own way of getting ready. Whether they're stockpiling booze, knives or water, the Twitter Report wishes everyone a safe weekend. Cooler heads have been posting as well, though, urging New Yorkers to remain calm.
Kevin Smith, meanwhile, appears to be relaxed to max now that he's done with part one of the script for his new film "Hit Somebody." His satisfaction, survival shopping lists and a killer Ultimate Captain America sketch from Reilly Brown topped our favorites list this morning. Catch 'em all after the jump.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for August 26, 2011.
Irene pt. 1: @DanSlott Tons of #SpiderIsland work to do. And I just *know* after I take off for #fanexpo, #hurricaneirene is gonna strand me in Toronto. Grrr! :-[
