Hilary Swank is heading to ABC with a yet-to-be-titled newspaper drama from writer, director, and executive producer Tom McCarthy (Spotlight). At this time, the project has been given a pilot order with the potential for a season pickup. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show revolves around a star journalist (Swank) who moves to Alaska for a fresh start after a career-killing blunder. Searching for redemption, she finds it at a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage. (Credit: Theo Wargo/Getty Images for Nantucket Film Festival) The pilot being considered for the 2022-2023 television season by ABC’s Craig Erwich is executive produced by former Fox 21 president Bert Salke with McCarthy, Swank, and Melissa Wells. The Anchorage Daily News‘ Kyle Hopkins and Ryan Binkley are also attached to executive produce. This marks Swank’s first TV role since her short-lived run on Netflix’s since-canceled Away, in which she played astronaut Emma Green.

Hilary Swank, who starred in Netflix’s sci-fi drama “Away” earlier in the year, reminisced about the show in an Instagram post on Tuesday following its cancellation by Netflix.
“Love and hope will always remain my ‘North Star.’ It was an incredible journey my compadres,” Swank said on Instagram. “And thank you to all my extraordinary followers who watched and supported our beautiful show. Wish we were showing you Mars. Until the next one.”
Swank starred in the series as Emma Green, a NASA astronaut who led the first astronaut expedition to Mars. The show also starred Josh Charles, Vivian Wu, and Mark Ivanir, among others.
“Away” premiered on Netflix on September 4. The show received mixed reviews from critics, including IndieWire’s Ben Travers, who, despite praising its polished look, referred to “Away” as a “stock family drama” that failed to capitalize on its sci-fi elements in his grade C review.

The Joint Mars Initiative surely wasn't expecting this hiccup. Deadline first reported that Netflix has given the boot to Hilary Swank's Away, a space mission drama that just premiered on Sept. 4 and earned pretty decent viewership after spending a few weeks in the top 10 of Nielsen's streaming rankings. The Oscar winner played Emma Green, an American astronaut who says goodbye to her husband (Josh Charles) and daughter (Talitha Bateman) for a three-year trip to Mars that doesn't come without complications. Main cast members across the first 10 episodes also included Vivian Wu, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh and Ray Panthaki. Following the news, Swank took to Instagram to thank her fans for watching....

Away has been promptly grounded by Netflix after just one season, coldly cutting short Hilary Swank’s onscreen mission to Mars.
Netflix’s cancelation of Away, confirmed by the major trades, arrives less than two months after the 10-episode season hit the platform back on September 4. While the series was purportedly generating high viewership, and spent several weeks on Nielsen’s recently introduced streaming top 10 ranking (on which it peaked at #2), the reason for the cancelation—and its abruptness—has been attributed to being on the wrong side of cost vs. audience analyses.
Nevertheless, Away has become the latest high-profile casualty of ongoing cost-cutting measures implemented by Netflix. While said measures may have commenced before the pandemic in the face of an evolving bottom line, they have certainly increased with efficiency due to the resulting production obstacles. Indeed, the series now joins a list of recent cancelations such as celebrated...

Netflix's Away won't be taking off for another adventure. On Oct. 20, Deadline reported that the series starring Hilary Swank has been canceled after only one season. It's unclear why Netflix decided to cancel the show, especially after it received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. It even spent time in the top 10 titles on Netflix.
The series brings space exploration a little closer to home as viewers follow Emma Green (Swank) and her international crew - Ram (Ray Panthaki), Lu (Vivian Wu), Misha (Mark Ivanir), and Kwesi (Ato Essandoh) - on a Mars expedition. As they navigate the challenges of their journey, they must also deal with the repercussions on their loved ones back home.
The astronauts eventually reach their goal and step down on red sand, which leaves fans wondering what comes next. The showrunner previously talked about their hopes for another season back in September. "I...

Away will not be taking flight at Netflix again.
The streamer has canceled the Hilary Swank-led space drama after a single season, Deadline reports.
The series seemed to be a popular option for the streaming, regularly appearing in its top 10 in the U.S.
It also spent several weeks in the top 10 Nielsen streaming viewership rankings, so the decision to end the series is a bit of a shocker.
Then again, Netflix also canceled a top 10 series in Teenage Bounty Hunters, so the lines between hits and misses for the streamer continue to blur.
The series followed the first crewed expedition to Mars, the Mars Joint Initiative.
It features an international crew: a Chinese chemist, a world-leading British botanist with no previous experience in space, a Russian cosmonaut with the most experience in space, an Indian medical officer who is second in command, and American commander Emma Green. Emma's...

It looks like we won’t be finding out what happened after the crew finally landed on Mars. A month and a half after it premiered, Netflix has canceled “Away,” the science fiction drama led by Hilary Swank.
“Away” had very good ratings upon launch, according to Nielsen, debuting at No. 6 after a Sept. 4 premiere, and subsequently spent several weeks in the top 10 of streaming shows. But Netflix weighs viewing versus cost when making decisions about renewals or cancellations, according to individuals with knowledge of the situation, and focuses on full-season orders to any show it greenlights.
Another factor may be the potential cost of shooting a second season under pandemic protocols, something that has led to cancellations and reversed renewals for other series this year.
Executive produced by Jason Katims, “Away” was created by Andrew Hinderaker, who executive produces the series along with showrunner Jessica Goldberg, as well as Katims,...

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to pick up a second season of Away, its space drama series starring Hilary Swank. The decision comes a little over a month after Season 1 was released on September 4.
When making renewal/cancellation decisions, Netflix brass analyze viewership versus cost. Away spent several weeks in the top 10 Nielsen streaming viewership rankings, peaking at No 2 for its first full week of release.
Created by Andrew Hinderaker, Away stars Swank as American astronaut Emma Green. As Green prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars, she must reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most. The production team behind Netflix’s Away couldn’t possibly have known while they were making the show that it would release in the middle of a global pandemic, at a time when much of the world would be as isolated as any astronaut on a long journey. But sometimes, stories arrive precisely when people most need to hear them, and this heartfelt tale about the power of science and human connection feels right on time.
Away follows the aspirational story of the first manned trip to Mars on a spaceship called the Atlas, staffed by a diverse international crew from a variety of backgrounds. And though their eighteen-month journey to the Red Planet is full of conflict and life-threatening space crises, it’s the small gestures of kindness, patience, and trust that ultimately build bonds between them. After all, they’re literally all they’ve got.

Netflix’s “Away” ends Season 1 on a pretty hopeful and triumphant note: the five astronauts make it to Mars in one piece. But when we see that shot of the first foot making an imprint on that red Martian sand, it’s hard to tell who’s foot it is.
The next thing we see is Misha Popov (Mark Ivanir) talking to Dr. Lu Wang (Vivian Wu), and it seems like he’s walked a little bit farther than her, which would indicate that he might have been the first man on Mars. But it’s hard to say for sure, based on what we’re shown, who was really the first to take that famous step — so we asked showrunner Jessica Goldberg to clear things up for us.

Do you need faith in a higher power to get through a strenuous mission to Mars? In Netflix’s Hilary Swank-led space drama series “Away,” showrunner Jessica Golberg found the oh-so-subtlest ways to ask that very question with an intertwining theme of faith and religion — which we just couldn’t help but notice.
For instance, consider how one of the five astronauts on the mission to Mars, Dr. Kwesi Weisberg-Abban (Ato Essandoh), was left orphaned when his birth parents died and was then adopted by a Jewish woman and her husband. Throughout the eight-month mission, Kwesi often prays openly, and in the final episode he even ends up swaying the usually agnostic Dr. Lu Wang (Vivian Wu), who asks him to lead them in prayer as they approach their difficult and potentially fatal landing on Mars.

What role does space play in our current world? Today, getting on a plane during Covid almost feels as risky as embarking on a mission to Mars.
Netflix’s new bright, shiny and expensive looking drama, Away, tries to contextualize space travel in its pilot episode. At a press conference, a reporter asks the Atlas crew, “Why should we care more about Mars than our own planet.” Hilary Swank’s commanding officer, Emma Green, delivers an impassioned speech on how much the US spends on the military and war. Wouldn’t it be better if we repurpose these tools for “discovery, not destruction.” This sets the stage for an exciting space mission where traveling to Mars could possibly save us from ourselves. Unfortunately, Away dodges this interesting, if thornier, premise as if it were a meteor heading straight for its shift. Rather than take a risk,...

On paper, “Away” sounds exactly like the kind of show its producers have excelled at in the past. From showrunner Jessica Goldberg (“The Path”) to executive producer and writer Jason Katims, the new Netflix drama takes a familiar genre (call it a space adventure) and tells its story from personal, character-driven perspectives to help make episodes distinct, moving, and universal. This duo employed a similar approach to their series about cults and football, but space seems to be a frontier too far. “Away” struggles in so many of the same areas where those series thrived — in the specifics, nuance, and character building — while simultaneously, and somewhat purposefully, not delivering an awe-inspiring thrill ride through the stars.
“Away” centers on the Green/Logan family. Emma Green (played by Hilary Swank) is a former Navy pilot who’s been chosen as commander for the first manned mission to Mars. Her husband, Matt Logan...

Netflix's new science-fiction drama is a riveting story of the Atlas, an internationally collaborated mission to Mars. Away Season 1 Episode 1 had the audience on the edge of their seats, as the crew prepared to launch from the Moon.
Of course, the journey to Mars tests the Atlas crew on various things, including faith, science, trust, and hope.
However, it certainly was not smooth sailing. The episode, titled "Go," depicted authentic life-threatening situations that affected each character's decisions.
Away Season 1 Episode 1 deals with the crew arriving on the Moon and preparing for the Atlas launch to Mars. Of course, the launch does not occur without several incidents beforehand. These incidents test the crew's decision-making skills and those working in Ground.
Reporter: Why should we care more about Mars than we do our own planet?
Emma: We shouldn't. Of course, we should care about social imperatives. But in the US alone,...

“In space, no one can hear you scream” is so 20th century. In the near future of Away, Netflix’s lavish new space parenting soap, astronaut Emma Green (Hilary Swank) frets that her teenage daughter Alexis (Talitha Bateman) got a C on a test and sometimes doesn’t text her back for a whole day. Being on a spaceship doesn’t mean you can’t also helicopter parent.
That’s essentially the premise of Away, a 10-part drama that awkwardly marries the grandeur of space exploration to the banality of parenting challenges. (Alternate title for the series, especially once the obligatory Elton John karaoke scene kicks in: ...

There’s something elemental about the desire to look to the stars, to imagine oneself as well as, perhaps, all humanity, finding a future beyond the planet we once called home. This innate desire to explore and discover is, indeed, so deeply encoded that it presents a trap for artists — it can too easily be traded on for an easy emotional charge without other, necessary storytelling work having been done.
That’s, unfortunately, the case with “Away,” Netflix’s new drama series starring Hilary Swank as the astronaut leading an international expedition to Mars. Created by Andrew Hinderaker and boasting executive producers including Jessica Goldberg, Jason Katims, and Matt Reeves, the series has all the markers of a prestige consideration of what it means for humanity to take flight, but leans so heavily on inspirational tropes of the genre that it never, itself, soars.

This Away review contains No spoilers.
Humanity loves stories about looking to the stars. Who among us hasn’t looked up and wondered what’s out there? Or what it might be like to explore worlds beyond our own?
Netflix’s Away is a fictional take on the obvious next step in the space race – a manned trip to Mars, complete with all the breathtaking awe and constant terrifying threat of death that will naturally involve. (Whenever we get there.) At the same time, it’s the story that will make you hope we do manage it some day, an aspirational tale about the best things we, as a species, have been capable of, and how far we are still capable of going together.
Whether it intended to be or not, Away is a remarkably perfect show for our moment, a drama that illustrates that something wondrous can come out...

The only aspect of this year that’s felt like business as usual when it comes to entertainment? August was pretty dead. September, however, is another story. Moviegoers willing to risk the trip will finally get to see Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, at least in the parts of the country where theaters have reopened. And those staying home won’t want for options, either, thanks to some ambitious new science fiction and horror series; an extremely of-the-moment TV movie; and new feature Charlie Kaufman, and the long-awaited return of Fargo.

Away
For attractant Emma Green (Hilary Swank), the one thing she’s always been certain of is that she belongs on the first mission to Mars. However, when that day finally comes, fulfilling the mission means spending three years 20 million miles away from her husband and daughter. As if that’s not enough strain for one family, the clip teases a medical crisis experienced by her husband. Too far from home to make a difference, Emma must instead show up for her crew as they get deeper into the mission.

I'm going to be totally honest.
When I heard about Away, I figured it was going to be just another space drama.
After watching the first trailer, however, my feelings have changed entirely.
From Executive Producer Jason Katims, the series looks set to focus more on the emotional side of taking to the sky and leaving your family and life behind.
Netflix describes it as "a thrilling, emotional drama on an epic scale that celebrates the incredible advancements humans can achieve and the personal sacrifices they must make along the way."

Hilary Swank is headed to Mars—by way of Netflix in the upcoming television series, Away.
The two-time Best Lead Actress Oscar winner—Boys Don’t Cry in 2000 and Million Dollar Baby in 2005—is headlining a space series from the streaming giant that’s more grounded than its other such offerings like, for example, Lost in Space or Another Life. Indeed, Swank stars in this 10-episode drama series as an American astronaut who reluctantly leaves her family behind for the perilous task of leading Nasa’s first manned mission to Mars.
Interestingly enough, the series is loosely inspired by real-life events, based on an article published in Esquire about a mission of astronaut Scott Kelly.

Netflix’s Away was given the green light way back in June 2018 and details of casting were announced a year later. Now, two years on from its inception, we’ve finally got our first proper look at it via a teaser trailer.
The science fiction drama series centers on Emma Green (Hilary Swank), an astronaut and former Navy pilot on a year-long mission to Mars. The promo highlights Emma’s melancholy at being separated from her husband Matt (Josh Charles) and daughter Lex (Talitha Bateman), showing her staring at a photo of them while shedding a single zero-gravity tear.
Through the window of her spacecraft we see the forbidding red surface of Mars, emphasizing the enormous distance between her and her loved ones. This separation anxiety should fuel a story that’s been billed by its creators as being about how we need one another in order to accomplish apparently impossible tasks.
