Hillary Clinton and Sharon Stone shared the stage at the annual Cinema for Peace funder raiser in Berlin on Monday night with the latter presenting the former U.S. secretary of state with the Ngo’s Cinema for Peace Award.
Stone described Clinton as an inspirational figure in her life: “The things you’ve said have changed my life, changed the direction and changed the course of the things I’ve chosen to do.”
Clinton gently ribbed Stone about her gala gown, a tie at the front robe covered in mauve spots.
“To my friend Sharon Stone who can look amazingly beautiful in anything. When she walked in, I was like, ‘Wow, who besides Sharon Stone could wear a gigantic bath robe and look stunning… you are one of a kind my friend, one of kind,” she said.
Further honorees included Pope Francis, who was seen receiving the award on taped recording,...

Jaka Bizilj, the founder of the Berlin-based Cinema for Peace Foundation which organized the airlift from Russia of opposition activist Alexei Navalny after his poisoning in 2020, has responded to his sudden death in an Arctic Circle jail on Friday.
“Seeing the kind of treatment that they were giving him, I’ve been afraid for months that they were going to kill him,” Bizilj told Deadline.
He suggested the writing had been on wall for Navalny ever since the death of Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash in August in the wake of his aborted coup over the summer.
“The Prigozhin case, the uprising, showed that Russia is not as stable as we all believed. After the killing of Prigozhin, Navalny was next on the list… I don’t think Putin saw him as an immediate threat but he was afraid of him in the long run,...

Over 100 leading figures, led by members of The Elders and the Future of Life Institute, have issued an open letter calling on world leaders to take a bold new approach to address ‘catastrophic’ risks to humanity.
The letter states that ‘long-view leadership’ is needed to tackle the ongoing impact and escalating risks of the climate and nature crisis, pandemics, nuclear weapons, and ungoverned AI. It also illustrates that millions of lives and livelihoods are already impacted by these threats and world leaders’ inaction and failure to cooperate will drive humanity toward ‘greater catastrophe’.
The Elders, including Mary Robinson, Ban Ki-moon, Graça Machel, Juan Manuel Santos, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, together with the president of the Future of Life Institute, Max Tegmark, have been joined by former leaders (including Gordon Brown), Nobel Laureates, scientific experts, youth activists, business leaders (including Richard Branson), philanthropists and influential figures from across public life (including Annie Lennox...

In a new statement, The Elders – including Mary Robinson, Ban Ki-moon, Graça Machel, and Gro Harlem Brundtland – are calling on Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice:
“The Elders call for Israel to comply immediately with the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice (Icj) to protect Palestinians in Gaza from acts of genocide.
“The Elders also call for Israel’s allies to publicly affirm their respect for the Court’s ruling, and to use the political, military and financial leverage at their disposal to ensure Israel’s compliance with the provisional measures.
“The Icj’s legally binding decision is a moment of the utmost gravity.
Israeli forces have killed over 25,000 Palestinians in Gaza, destroyed homes and infrastructure across the territory and displaced up to 1.9 million people. The Elders share the Court’s judgement that this scale of devastation risks causing irreparable harm to the people of Gaza.

The following is a statement from The Elders, a group of independent global leaders working for peace, justice and human rights, founded by Nelson Mandela and chaired by Mary Robinson:
“The Elders condemn the horrendous terror attacks launched by Hamas on 7 October 2023, the killing of innocent civilians, the holding of hostages and the continued indiscriminate missile attacks on Israel. These are mass atrocities for which the perpetrators must be brought to justice, preferably in a court of law.
“We also condemn the Israeli government’s unacceptable collective punishment of the population of Gaza through siege, the scale of the military assault and its death toll, and the forcible transfer of civilians within the territory, as well as the continuing land and home incursions and demolitions in the West Bank and settler violence against Palestinian communities. These are not legitimate acts of self-defence: they are clear violations of international humanitarian law,...

Following their visit to Israel and and Palestine, Mary Robinson and Ban Ki-moon warn that a ‘one-state reality’ is now rapidly extinguishing the prospect of a two-state solution.
The Chair and Deputy Chair of The Elders today warned that a ‘one-state reality’ is now rapidly extinguishing the prospect of a two-state solution foreseen in the 1993 Oslo Accords to bring peace and security to both the Israeli and the Palestinian peoples.
The Government of Israel’s intent to exercise sovereignty over all the territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea undermines the democratic ideals of the Israeli state, denies the Palestinian people their right to self-determination, and risks an uncontrollable explosion of violence on both sides.
Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders, former President of Ireland and Un High Commissioner of Human Rights, and Ban Ki-moon, Deputy Chair of The Elders and former Un Secretary-General, spoke out at the...

New Delhi, March 11 (Ians) A group of more than 190 current and former world leaders, Nobel laureates, civil society organisations, faith leaders, and health experts in an open letter called on governments to “never again” allow “profiteering and nationalism” to come before the needs of humanity, as it did during the Covid-19 pandemic.
They condemned the vaccine inequality which led to one preventable death every 24 seconds in the first year of the Covid vaccine rollout alone, according to a study published in the Lancet.
It is “a scar on the world’s conscience” that those lives were not saved, the signatories said.
Covid-19 countermeasures were developed and delivered with enormous public funding. Therefore, they are “the people’s vaccines, the people’s tests, and the people’s treatments”, they said.
But instead of distributing Covid-19 vaccines, tests, and treatments based on need, pharmaceutical companies sold doses first to the “richest countries...

On the first anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, The Elders call on all Un member states to condemn President Putin’s latest efforts to escalate his illegal war on Ukraine through suspending Russia’s participation in New Start (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty).
“We urge Russia and the United States to return to dialogue to manage the risks of nuclear weapons, which are particularly high at times of increased global tensions.
“President Putin’s action increases the existential threat of nuclear catastrophe for humanity and risks the safety and security of all nations. It runs contrary to Russia’s own security interests, and raises the alarming prospect of a world without any constraints on the arsenals of the two nuclear superpowers – Russia and the United States – for the first time since 1972.

In the last seventy decades in the wake of the First and the Second World Wars, as nations united so as to prevent the scourge of war, and if not, to at least ameliorate its effects on the innocents, peacemaking became a full-time and hopefully, sacrosanct activity. But, as said, both the peacemakers and the peacekeepers seemed to somehow attract the worst from the people whom they sought to protect, with zealots of either side or other vested interests, gunning for them.
Mahatma Gandhi is the best example in the Indian context, over accusations that he was not mindful of the interests of his "own" people, and calling for amity at a time when a sort of "blood lust" seemed to have seized people. But, there are more examples of those who sought to solve problems in faraway lands, where they had no stake at all, and still went to pay for it.

The Elders today expressed their deep concern at the recent violent confrontation in Catalonia and urged both sides to pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
The Elders applauded the progress that Spain has made since its democratic transition in 1975. This achievement should not be put at risk. The potential political, economic and social repercussions of a protracted crisis should not be underestimated.
They called on both sides to refrain from any more divisive and inflammatory language and actions.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders said: “The constitutional crisis that is unfolding in Spain calls for consultation and not confrontation. I urge the Spanish government and the regional government of Catalonia to renew their commitment to a resolution through dialogue. They must find a peaceful path out of this crisis.”

The Elders today urged the leaders of the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (Dprk) to address nuclear tensions in a calm, sober and respectful way, to avoid further escalation and potentially devastating military conflict.
They expressed their support for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who warned in his speech to the Un General Assembly in New York that “fiery talk can lead to fatal misunderstandings”. They stressed that only a strong multilateral response can succeed in resolving the issue peacefully.
The Elders also deplored the recent nuclear test and missile launches by the Dprk. These actions are a clear violation of the Dprk’s obligations not to produce or test nuclear weapons. The Elders urged the Dprk to halt its nuclear programme and pursue a peaceful settlement on the Korean peninsula.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders, said: “The current situation in the Korean peninsula is deeply alarming.

According to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian affairs, there are 13.5 million people in Syria who require humanitarian assistance. Said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday, “Aleppo is now a synonym for hell.”
In addition to United Nations’ organizations, there are numerous humanitarian groups working to provide relief to the millions of people affected by President Assad’s regime.
