Fishing is a family business for many of the people who appear on Deadliest Catch. But carrying on that legacy can be difficult and dangerous. Perhaps it’s no surprise that Captain Phil Harris, who appeared on the Discovery Channel reality series until his death in 2010, urged his son to give up crabbing.

Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch is no exaggeration. The long-running reality series profiles the lives of people working in the commercial fishing industry, one of the most dangerous occupations in the U.S. Over the years, several of the show’s cast members have died. Some were involved in work-related accidents, while others had health issues or were battling addiction. Here are just a few of the Deadliest Catch cast members who have died after appearing on the show.
‘Deadliest Catch’ cast member Todd Kochutin died in a 2021 accident
Commercial fisherman regularly put their lives on the line to do their job. An average of 43 people working in the field die from a traumatic work-related injury every year, according to the CDC, a rate far higher than for the average worker. Sadly, Deadliest Catch’s Todd Kochutin was one of those deaths. In 2021, the 30-year-old was fatally injured in an...

On tonight’s all-new Deadliest Catch, two captains’ kids take giant steps forward in their familial legacies. More than three years after her captain Phil Harris’s tragic passing, the Cornelia Marie returns to the fleet with Harris’ son Josh — the boat’s new owner — in the wheelhouse. And aboard the Northwestern, captain Sig Hansen welcomes a familiar new greenhorn — his beautiful, blonde 18-year-old daughter, Mandy, who has convinced her parents to let her work aboard the boat for a few days of the opilio crab season while her school’s on winter break. Just as the weather is warming up in much of the U.S., it's time time to start gearing up for the frigid, dangerous waters of "Deadliest Catch." The 10th season of the show begins next month (Tues. April 22 at 9:00 p.m. Et), and this first look at what's ahead suggests more danger, familiar faces, and a government shutdown. Josh Harris, the son of the late Captain Phil Harris, is back as captain and owner of his father’s boat the Cornelia Marie. But will he be able to continue his dad’s legacy and create one of his own? There are also big changes on the horizon for the F/V Northwestern. Embarking on her right of passage, Sig Hansen’s 18-year-old daughter Mandy joins the ranks as deckhand. In a profession typically dominated by men, Mandy has a lot to prove. But can Sig treat her just like one of the crew?...

On Tuesday, April 22, "Deadliest Catch" launches its landmark 10th season on Discovery Channel, with political hurdles and a surge from the next generation of Bering Sea crabbers.
As fans know, last season, Discovery and Original Productions couldn't come to terms with Josh Harris, the new owner of the F/V Cornelia Marie, the ship formerly captained by his late father, Capt. Phil Harris.
The saga of the Harris family is close to the hearts of "Deadliest" fans, and the absence was keenly felt. But when cameras descended once more upon Dutch Harbor to chronicle the 2013 king-crab season, Discovery reports that Josh Harris was back, as owner and captain of the beloved blue-and-yellow vessel.
Apparently, Harris picked a tumultuous time to return to "Deadliest," as a government shutdown keeps the fleet in dock past the scheduled beginning of the crab season. Last October, Keith Colburn, captain of the F/V Wizard,...

One of the most enduring and popular storylines on Discovery's crab-fishing drama "Deadliest Catch" has taken yet another turn.
Fans of the late Capt. Phil Harris, his sons Josh and Jake, and their boat, the F/V Cornelia Marie, have watched father-son drama, the grief of the sons at the loss of their father in early 2010, Jake's battle with substance abuse, and Josh's new fatherhood and ultimately successful bid to gain ownership of the Cornelia Marie.
But in a Facebook post today (Saturday, Sept. 14), Josh Harris revealed news that will disappoint many fans, writing:
"So to all my fans that watched the show, Deadliest Catch, the Cornelia Marie was not optioned this year so we regretfully will not be on the show anymore. Before there was a "Deadliest Catch" on Discovery Channel, there was the F/V Cornelia Marie, and the woman for whom it was named, Cornelia Marie Devlin. After receiving ownership of the boat following a divorce, she partnered with the late Capt. Phil Harris and set out to fish for crab in Alaska's Bering Sea.
The rest is maritime, and reality-tv, history.
After Harris' death from complications of a stroke in early 2010, the future of the boat became uncertain. Harris' sons and heirs -- older brother Josh Harris and younger brother Jake Harris -- and Devlin put the boat to sea in the fall for king-crab season, under the leadership of Phil Harris' friend Capt. Derrick Ray, but the trip devolved into chaos and near-mutiny.
Capt. Tony Lara took the boat out for opilio-crab season in early 2011, and things went more smoothly.

Fans of Discovery's "Deadliest Catch" know that deckhand Freddy Maugatai -- a native of Pago Paga, American Samoa -- as a tough, volatile, hard-working crab fisherman. In May of 2012, deckhand Jake Anderson, until recently part of the crew of the crab-boat F/V Northwestern, featured on Discovery's Tuesday reality hit "Deadliest Catch," married sweetheart Jenna Patterson in a ceremony officiated by Northwestern Capt. Sig Hansen.
Ever since Anderson came on the Northwestern years ago as a fresh-faced greenhorn, he's looked up to Hansen as a mentor. After his own father's disappearance in 2010 -- Keith Anderson's remains were found in 2012 -- Hansen also became like a surrogate father to Anderson.
Early in 2013, Anderson left the Northwestern to pursue his ambition to be a crab-boat captain by working aboard the F/V Kiska Sea, owned by Aleutian Spray Fisheries. But that doesn't mean he's cut ties with his old skipper.
In the past, Anderson has been known to do chores around the Hansen home near Seattle, Wash., and not much has changed. Only now, instead of mowing lawns,...

In case you ever wondered whether the crab fishermen of Discovery's Tuesday-night reality hit "Deadliest Catch" are now living Kardashian-style lives and hiring other people to do the dirty work, wonder no more.
"I'm in the wheelhouse," Edgar Hansen, deckboss of the F/V Northwestern, tells Zap2it. "We're in the shipyard. We're doing all the boat maintenance. We've got engines torn apart, cranes off."
Told that TV stars should have people to handle this for them, Hansen laughs.
"Oh, no," he says, "you should see me right now. I'm covered in grease and paint chips. We're trying to get it all done by June 2, to go after salmon. We do that in June, July and August. We're a little nervous about it, but whatever, it'll come together."
Hansen's older brother, Sig Hansen, is captain of the huge white Northwestern, one of the top boats in Alaska's Bering Sea fishing fleet.

Even in an industry used to wild weather and physical peril, this past opilio-crab season on Alaska's Bering Sea was one for the books. Fans of brothers Jake and Josh Harris got an explanation as to why Jake wasn't in any of the promos for the new season of "Deadliest Catch" when they tuned in for the season premiere.
Josh explained that his brother was sidelined for the first king crab season in seven years. "My brother’s been going through issues. He’s lost in drugs still," he said. "Jake’s gotta take care of his own stuff right now. Deal with his demons."
Josh appeared to be battling his own demons as well, and it's a struggle that will likely play out throughout the rest of the season. He's frustrated that he's still not running his father, Phil Harris' boat.
"It’s very humbling. Just sitting’ here, for 2 1/2 years, working on this, trying to get the Cornelia [Marie] back," Josh said. He said that the boat his his family's legacy, as well as his heart and soul.

Tonight, Deadliest Catch returns for its ninth season on Discovery, and there is top-notch drama even before the fleet leaves Dutch Harbor. Here, courtesy of exec producer David Pritikin, is a tease of what’s to come.
• Elliott Neese is now his own boss: Fired from the Ramblin’ Rose in the offseason, the show’s youngest and most polarizing captain has gone more than $1 million in debt to buy his own boat, the F/V Saga. Most shocking perhaps: Seeing the pride in his father’s misty eyes may, at least for a moment, have you thinking you’ve misjudged Elliott.

On March 21, 2012, A&E Network premiered the reality series "Duck Dynasty," profiling the Robertsons of Louisiana, who have made a tidy fortune from their company, Duck Commander, which manufactures handmade duck calls (there's also Buck Commander, which focuses on deer-hunting paraphernalia).
Almost immediately, the saga of Duck Commander CEO Willie Robertson and his nearest and dearest -- his wife, Korie; his parents, company founder Phil and Miss Kay; brothers Jase and Jep; and Phil's eccentric brother, Uncle Si -- became a runaway hit.
Although the Robertson men look like members of a Zz Top tribute band (and Zz Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" is the show's theme on A&E), with their long hair, flowing beards and varied collection of headgear -- especially Willie's signature bandannas -- "Duck Dynasty" offers a portrait of a functional family that works, plays and prays together.

Back in April, Discovery’s Deadliest Catch returned with a season 8 premiere that also marked the Emmy-winning series’ 100th episode. Teasing the season ahead, exec producer Thom Beers reported that we’d see one man go overboard — at the dock. “The last time that happened it was to Johnathan Hillstrand ,” Beers recalled. “They decided to celebrate Halloween early because they’d be at sea, and Johnathan was pretty hammered. One of the crewmen was dressed as Spider-Man, and Johnathan says, ‘All I remember was Spider-Man reaching down and pulling me out of the ocean.’ Just the insanity of it,” he said,...

Tonight (Tuesday, Aug. 7), Discovery Channel airs "Deadliest Catch: Behind the Scenes," the season 8 iteration of the annual special that shows what goes on behind the cameras capturing crab-fleet life on Alaska's Bering Sea.
Holding one of those cameras since the show's first season has been producer and cinematographer Todd Stanley (pictured above between Capt. Phil Harris, left, and his son, Josh Harris, right).
Asked what it takes to wield a camera aboard a crab boat in autumn and winter, Stanley says, "You gotta have a lot of grit. You have to have a lot of endurance. It's not easy spending long hours out there. ... It's not for everybody. The hours are long and grueling.
"I feel a lot of responsibility for the show. It's sort of my baby. I've been there since the beginning, before it was even called 'Deadliest Catch.' It's something that I take a lot of pride in.

On the "Deadliest Catch" special, "After the Catch" (Tue., 10 p.m. Et on Discovery), stars of the show talked about what it's been like since they lost Captain Phil Harris.
Phil Harris died on February 9th, 2010 after suffering a massive stroke.
At his behest, the cameras kept rolling even in the hospital, and "Deadliest Catch" chronicled his final days, including his wrenching deathbed farewell to his sons, Jake and Josh.
Since their dad's untimely death, his sons have sometimes struggled to find their way, and "Deadliest Catch" producer, Sheila McCormack, spoke about those difficult days.
"They were lost. You know, Jacob especially," she said. When Jake came out of rehab he stayed with McCormack for a couple of weeks. "It was natural for me to do it," McCormack explained.
"And Phil would've wanted me to do that," she said, "and that’s what was important."

On Tuesday's (July 3) episode of Discovery's crab-fishing reality series "Deadliest Catch," newlywed F/V Northwestern deckhand Jake Anderson drives into a forested area in Skagit County, Wash., to the place where his father's 1999 Ford Ranger truck had been found on a logging road shortly after he disappeared in 2010.
Keith A. Anderson, a former Marine and high-school guidance counselor, took a trip to Snohomish County in January of that year, but never returned. Later reports indicated that he was intending to purchase OxyContin in a town about 100 miles away from where he lived in Anacortes, Wash.
Blood was found in the elder Anderson's truck, but it was not until very recently that bones found by a hiker were identified as the missing man, as reported by Komo-tv. On Tuesday, June 19, the Bering Sea crab fleet hits dry land.
"It's really hot out today in Breckinridge," Josh Harris tells Zap2it from the latest location for "After the Catch" -- the roundtable companion show to Discovery's Tuesday reality hit "Deadliest Catch" --at the Whale's Tail restaurant in the Colorado ski-resort town, far from any ocean.
"It's probably in the 80s here," adds Harris.
Reminded that's a far cry from the bitter cold and crushing ice suffered by the crab fleet as it sought opilio crab on Alaska's Bering Sea during the first half of 2012, Harris says, "Oh, yes, it is. God bless it. God bless it. That's all I can say about that."

The untimely death of Captain Phil Harris in February 2010 rocked the entire "Deadliest Catch" (Tue., 9 p.m. Et on Discovery) community, but none more so than his sons Josh and Jake.
After the Harris boys were financially unable to put their father’s boat in the water they both signed on with other crews. Josh joined "Time Bandit," and Jake joined "Northwestern" with his dad's old friend Captain Sig Hansen.
Jake was finding the loss particularly hard, and he kept his dad's ashes with him in an urn. “I carry him around everywhere," he said. "I miss him.”
However, despite struggling with the work onboard "Northwestern" Jake persevered, and Hansen said approvingly: "I'm sure Phil would be real proud of him."

In a normal year, by the time Discovery's crab-fishing reality show/soap-opera-for-dudes "Deadliest Catch" hits the airwaves on Tuesday nights, the fleet is safely back in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and the crews and captains are taking a well-earned break.
Not so this year. With halved king-crab quotas last fall and crushing ice during opilio-crab season this past winter, many boats continue to be out on the Bering Sea long into the new year.
It's mid-April, and on the morning of the Discovery Channel upfront presentation to advertisers at UCLA on the Westside of Los Angeles, three of the crab captains have gathered for breakfast at the Luxe Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in Bel Air -- Scott "Junior" Campbell of the F/V Seabrooke, Keith Colburn of the F/V Wizard and Johnathan Hillstrand of the F/V Time Bandit (from left to right in picture at bottom).

An Alaska fishing captain who appeared on the program that spawned Discover Channel's "Deadliest Catch" was sentenced to five years in prison as a result of an earlier fatal snowmobile crash, according to the Associated Press.
Captain Clarence "Ole" Helgevold Jr. was originally charged with manslaughter when his car crashed with a snowmobile in January 2011. The man driving the snowmobile was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
But in May, Helgevold pleaded guilty to reduced charges and will serve four-and-a-half years for criminally negligent homicide and six months for driving under the influence. The plea deal also included a $5,000 fine, of which $1,000 is suspended, and a 37-month license revocation. Helgevold must also submit to alcohol screenings and undergo alcohol treatment.
Helgevold was the captain of the Arctic Dawn, which was featured on 2004's "America's Deadliest Season," which led to the successful Discovery Channel series.

The Roman Empire was brutal, repressive, tyrannical, corrupt, morally bankrupt… Well, nothing’s perfect, right? After all, the Empire’s collapse after 700 years didn’t bring freedom or reformation, but the Dark Ages – disease, ignorance, witch trials, book burnings, illiteracy, and all that other bad stuff which made the Dark Ages so damned dark.
It’s like that line in Monty Python’s Life of Brian: a Jewish revolutionary group is plotting the overthrow of their Roman overseers, and ringleader John Cleese declares, “After all, what’ve the Romans ever done for us?”
After which Cleese’s followers offer a shopping list – a long shopping list – of the benefits of Roman occupation. An exasperated Cleese finally concedes/concludes with, “All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?”

"Deadliest Catch" may have hit home runs at the recent Creative Arts Emmys-- taking home four awards, including outstanding reality program -- but when it returns in 2012 on Discovery Channel for its eighth season, one player is going to be missing from the field.
Much of the personal drama among the crab-fishing fleet on Alaska's Bering Sea in season seven came from the conflicts aboard the F/V Cornelia Marie, as part-owners and brothers Jake and Josh Harris tried to carry on the legend of their late father, Capt. Phil Harris.
During the autumn king-crab season, there was a battle royal between the brothers and Capt. Derrick Ray. Then in the winter, during opilio crab season, things were more harmonious with new Capt. Tony Lara, but the financial future of the boat -- and with it, the Harris legacy -- still remained in doubt.

It's always fun to look at the Creative Arts Emmy winners to see if they hold any predictors of what might happen at the primetime Emmy ceremony. This year's Creative Arts ceremony, just over one week before the primetime awards are given out, is no exception, given some of the surprises that we saw Saturday (Sept. 10).
Whether these are any indication of what might happen next Sunday is anybody's guess. But it's sure as heck fun to speculate, right?
"Boardwalk Empire" dominates: It wasn't a big stretch to think that the academy voters were going to fall in love with "Boardwalk Empire." It's a sweeping period piece shot on an epic scale, with the pedigree of both Martin Scorsese and Terence Winter behind it. But given the love the academy has had for "Mad Men" during the last three years, it was a surprise to see "Boardwalk" dominate most of the technical awards for drama,...
