‘Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls’ – 10 Things We Learned from the Blu-ray Commentaries
If you enjoyed Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls on Screambox, the Blu-ray is a treasure trove. The horror-comedy is accompanied by three different commentary tracks featuring writer-director-editor-star Andrew Bowser and various crew members, among other special features.
Bowser is naturally funny, seamlessly slipping in Onyx-isms, but he’s also not afraid to get real. There’s a solo director’s track, a commentary focused on the production alongside actress/producer Olivia Taylor Dudley and producer Clark Baker, and a sound commentary joined by sound designer/supervising sound editor Mike James Gallagher.
Here are 10 things I learned from the Onyx the Fortuitous commentaries…
1. The film was intended to start with Bartok removing his eye.
Bowser intended to give viewers a taste of the horrors to come with a cold open that would introduce Jeffrey Combs as Bartok the Great in a scene in which he removes his own eye.

In an interview with Film Comment in 2020, actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz said that she used her ample salary from making the remake of "Pet Sematary" to make her feature directorial debut "She Dies Tomorrow," a dark fable about the nature of despair. "She Dies Tomorrow" was one of the unlucky 2020 features whose potential success was hindered by Covid-19-related theater closures, resulting in a combined box office take of less than $400,000 from a release on only 24 screens.
Not that a film like "She Dies Tomorrow" was a threat to, say, a Marvel film. Seimetz constructed an assertively sad meditation full of weeping, doubt, death, and fear. It imagines a world where depression is contagious and how humans' natural propensity toward utter emotional emptiness ultimately informs and colors every aspect of our lives.
The premise seems simple: Kate Lyn Sheil plays a woman named Amy who has just purchased a...

Review: Adaptations are always tricky, let alone trying to adapt something like a character from YouTube. Yet somehow Andrew Bowser’s Onyx the Fortuitous works really well in the narrative here. Sure, there are going to be people that are driven crazy by his delivery but I found myself oddly charmed by it. And it doesn’t hurt that there’s a spectacular cast surrounding him that provides plenty of hilarity. I would hope that most know what they’re getting into when it comes to something called Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. But you never know.

Andrew Bowser premiered his film Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival based on a character he developed on YouTube.
In his debut on the big screen, Onyx searches for a new life and is enticed by his idol Bartok the Great (Jeffery Combs) into summoning a demon. In a turn for the worse, Bartok, his followers, including Farrah (Olivia Dudley), and Onyx have to fight to save their souls.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview founder Erik Meers, Dudley discussed what it was like working with Bowser.
“Andrew’s pretty cool,” she laughed. “We’ve known each other for ten years and we’ve been making stuff on and off the whole time, especially these last five years. So I’ve been very familiar with the character Onyx and I get such a kick out of Onyx.”

Internet sensation Onyx the Fortuitous, aka the “Weird Satanist Guy,” has charmed viewers for roughly a decade through a series of ongoing viral videos that have amassed over 300 million views. Writer/Director/Star Andrew Bowser brings his viral character to the big screen in Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, an infectious Saturday Morning Cartoon of a comedy-horror movie. Bowser infuses Onyx’s feature film debut with endearing quirkiness, endless ’80s/’90s influences, and horror whimsy.
When oddball Marcus J. Trillbury (Bowser) isn’t working his fast food gig or getting into fights with his mom’s (Barbara Crampton) boyfriend, he’s aspiring to master his craft as amateur occultist Onyx the Fortuitous. So much so that he jumps at the chance to prove himself to his idol Bartok the Great (Jeffrey Combs), answering an open call for fellow Satan worshippers to join the renowned dark master for a special ritual.

The film stars Henry Thomas, Bradley Stryker, Jennifer Robertson, Olivia Taylor Dudley, C. Earst Harth, Joe Costa, and Catherine Lough Haggquist. "I feel like I'm bothering your friend..." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for a wacky indie comedy titled Some of Our Stallions, the latest from filmmaker Carson Mell. This buddy comedy-drama comes from the filmmakers behind Brigsby Bear, Silicon Valley, and Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. When best friends Beautiful Bill and Andy, newly released from a mandatory stint at a mental hospital, struggle to fit into regular society, Bill decides they need romantic love. This kicks off a years-long series of misadventures that challenge not only their friendship, but their grasp on sanity. Carson Mell wrote and directed the film in which he also stars alongside Al Di and Olivia Taylor Dudley; also joined by Tim Heidecker, David Zellner, Stefan Djuric, and Mike Judge. This looks way more complex and zanier than expected, with some impressively witty humor and three great lead performances. Here's the first official...

After writing for Silicon Valley and Eastbound and Down, as well as scripting The Long Dumb Road, Carson Mell has written, directed, and starred in a new feature titled Some of Our Stallions. Also led by Al Di and Olivia Taylor Dudley, with appearances by Tim Heidecker, David Zellner, and Mike Judge, the first trailer has arrived ahead of a July 2 release.
The oddball buddy comedy follows Beautiful Bill & Andy, newly released from a mandatory stint at a mental hospital, who are best friends. With their sanity still slipping, they attempt to reintegrate back into society by meeting like-minded women at a nearby mental health facility. With his writing experience, Mell currently has a strong grasp at dark comedy, so hopefully he succeeds in what looks like a tricky tonal balance.
See the trailer and poster below.

Even if you haven’t experienced one, you might be familiar with the sensation of a panic attack or a supposedly irrational fear like claustrophobia, both of which can suffocate their victims with a feeling of impending death. Once triggered, those internal alarms present a lonely state of being — an alternate plane of existence with its own set of survival rules, hard to describe, even harder to reason with. In the lean, lurid and slow-burning psychodrama “She Dies Tomorrow,” filmmaker Amy Seimetz ingeniously expresses the feeling of being stuck in such a fugue, inexplicable to anyone other than those clutched by its claws in a given moment.
Indeed, a type of existential dread akin to that of “Mulholland Drive” and “It Follows” lies at the root of “She Dies Tomorrow,” which was set to premiere at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, before the event became a casualty of the contagion. Seimetz...

This The Magicians review contains spoilers.
The Magicians Season 5 Episode 12
The Magicians should be applauded for its commitment to including a musical episode each season, and the fact that “The Balls” comes just before the end of the series makes this one particularly poignant. In that sense, centering the songs around emotions, bottled or otherwise, was an appropriate choice. However, combining the musical elements with a heist, another tried and true narrative in this show, may have had a diluting effect on both fan favorite formats rather than doubling the enhancement. Nevertheless, with the world seed in hand (or in… you know), the finale is bound to be legitimately world changing.
The setup for the heist was, as usual, a high point of the episode. The Magicians is good at making sure everyone has something to contribute. Here, for example, we had Marina describing her failed attempt at stealing the...

The movie stars Seimetz’s frequent collaborator Kate Lyn Sheil as Amy, a woman ravaged by the notion that she is going to die tomorrow which sends her down a dizzying emotional spiral. When Amy’s skeptical friend Jane (Jane Adams) discovers Amy’s feeling of imminent death to be contagious, they both begin bizarre journeys through what might be the last day of their lives.

The Magicians has been a force of nature from the very start, growing a loyal audience and weaving a tale that bridged our world with the storybook land of Fillory and has become more and more complex ever since. Given its massive appeal, including our glowing reviews over the years, the anticipation was high for the return of season 5, which turned out to be the show’s final season.
The logline for The Magicians season 5 spoke of plenty of magical mayhem that was in store:
Last season, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: the life of Quentin Coldwater, who died heroically to save his friends— and the world. Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him. Now, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way and there’s too damn much of it,...

This review of The Magicians contains spoilers.
The Magicians Season 5 Episode 9
Although this week’s episode of The Magicians was disjointed as hell with stories shooting off in completely different directions, each arc gave us plenty to sink our teeth into, and the news that season 5 would end the series added a certain amount of urgency to our enjoyment of this installment. We gathered each disparate thread and held it close, especially when nostalgic elements appeared like the multiple Chatwin connections, returning minor characters, and of course Margo’s glorious exorcising axes from last season’s musical episode. The desperation of several characters in “Cello Squirrel Daffodil” therefore became our own desperation as we witnessed this buildup to the show’s swan song.
By far the most satisfying storyline was the adventure of Penny and Plum, even though technically they didn’t really make much progress in investigating the mysterious signal.

The chances of a sixth season renewal have disappeared for The Magicians. Syfy has revealed that the current fifth season will also be the show's last.
The Magicians stars Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy, Jade Tailor, Brittany Curran, and Trevor Einhorn. The series follows a group of friends as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures who threaten to destroy the magical world they’ve come to know. In season four, magic was saved with Quentin Coldwater giving his life to save his friends and the world. In year five, there's too much magic and, as the excess builds, an apocalypse looms.
The fifth season of The Magicians averages a 0.11 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 341,000 viewers. Compared to season four, that's...
