Almost everyone knows the name of Tony Montana, the fictional drug lord immortalized by Al Pacino in the 1983 movie "Scarface," yet few know the name of Miami's real-life most notorious king, er, queenpin, Griselda Blanco Restrepo. In the late 1970s, Blanco seized control of Miami's drug trade through incredible violence, waging war on any who opposed her. This led to the "Cocaine Cowboy" wars, in which Blanco's enforcers would kill their opponents in broad daylight, sometimes in motorcycle drive-by shootings. Blanco's life story is both fascinating and terrible, full of sex, drugs, and murder, and is totally ripe for a fictionalized interpretation.
Sofia Vergara stars as Blanco in "Griselda," a six-part limited series on Netflix that tells the story of the infamous self-made billionaire, drug pusher, and multiple murderer, although the real story is even more brutal and impossible to believe than the miniseries depicts. Most remember Griselda Blanco as the “Black Widow,” a ruthless Colombian drug lord whose network flooded Miami with cocaine, brought in $80 million a month nationally, and who’s been personally implicated in a rumored 200 murders. Michael Corleone Blanco, her youngest son raised at the height of her drug-trafficking empire, admits she was a rigid, stern woman he affectionately called cariñosa — an endearing term given to loved ones.
“As a kid, you can’t really comprehend what is wrong, what is right, and what is the family business,” Blanco tells Rolling Stone.

In the past decade, there have been countless original TV shows that have thrived on streaming platforms. From raunchy comedies to intense dramas, to mystical fantasies, streaming platforms truly have something for everyone. But some of these shows tend to lose steam the longer they run, and in some cases, they can become too bizarre.
This often happens when a show becomes unexpectedly popular and new seasons are ordered. Some shows, such as Only Murders in the Building are forced to repeat similar set-ups that bizarrely feel more formulaic instead of zany and clever. Other series, like House of Cards, must write around an abrupt change in casting, effectively interrupting the flow of the story. Whatever the cause or method, these streaming series had a good thing going, until they became too strange to remain on top.

At the Cannes Film Festival, Italy’s 102 Distribution is selling thriller “Light Falls,” directed by Phedon Papamichael, the cinematographer on James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Papamichael, who was Oscar nominated for handling the cinematography on Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” talks to Variety about shooting “Light Falls.”
The film tells the story of Clara, played by Elene Makharashvili, and Ella, played by Nini Nebieridze, two young lovers whose Greek island holiday spirals out of control when a tragic incident leads to an encounter with a trio of illegal Albanian immigrants. The thriller establishes the relationship of the young women before moving in a darker and more violent direction.
Papamichael told Variety: “The movie starts like an Eric Rohmer movie and ends like a Tarantino movie. It has a social political angle as well as playing like a thriller.

Disquieting thriller “Lateral Thinking” (“Pensamiento Lateral”) enjoyed a private Buenos Aires preview screening alongside key Latin American film market, Ventana Sur.
Argentine director Mariano Hueter (“El Legado”) and lead actress Spain’s Itziar Ituño (“Money Heist”) fielded audience questions ahead of its wider release in the coming months.
The film revolves around a school of thought presented by psychologist Edward de Bono, which speaks to solving problems in an unconventional, indirect manner. When a psychologist is kidnapped after giving a lecture, she relies on the very theories she teaches to thwart her captors and escape further torment.
Scenes play out slowly and build in intensity. The shots are precise and achieve a claustrophobic, frantic urgency frame-to-frame. There’s an astutely raw vulnerability to Ituño’s character Julia, who develops supreme agency in her attempt at accessing her captors’ weaknesses. In Julia, they’ve met a venerable match, and Ituño plays...

Netflix is keeping Narcos: Mexico around.
The streamer has confirmed that a third season has been ordered, almost nine months after the sophomore run dropped.
There will be some changes behind-the-scenes ahead of the new season.
Series co-creator Carlo Bernard is taking over as showrunner reins from the longtime Narcos boss Eric Newman.
Newman is currently under an overall deal with the streamer on both the feature side and the television side and he will segue into overseeing a broadening Netflix slate that includes the previously announced opioid TV drama Painkiller, Escape From Spiderhead starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, and The Upper World starring Daniel Kaluuya.
Newman will continue to executive produce alongside Bernard and Jose Padilha, so he will still have input on the show.
In addition, Wagner Moura, who starred as Pablo Escobar during the first two seasons of Narcos, will return to the series, directing two episodes in the new season.

Netflix has ordered a third season of drug-trafficking drama series Narcos: Mexico. When it returns it will be without series lead Diego Luna, who portrayed drug cartel leader Félix Gallardo, and with a new showrunner.
Season 2 ended with Luna’s Gallardo sentenced to prison for his drug trafficking crimes and there had been much speculation he would not return if the series was renewed for a third season. Luna is set to reprise his Cassian Andor character in Disney+’s Star Wars spinoff series Rogue One, which is currently in pre-production.
Series co-creator Carlo Bernard will be taking over day-to-day showrunning duties from Eric Newman who is stepping back after five seasons. Newman will continue to executive produce the series alongside Bernard, Jose Padilha, Sidonie Dumas, Christophe Riandee, Nicolas Atlan, Doug Miro and Andrés Baiz. Nearly nine months after Season 2 came and went, Narcos: Mexico has been renewed for a third season at Netflix. In confirming the news, the streamer also announced a big change behind-the-scenes: Series co-creator Carlo Bernard will take the showrunner reins from the longtime Narcos boss Eric Newman.
The Narcos franchise first launched on Netflix back in August 2015. Its first two seasons focused exclusively on Pablo Escobar, while Season 3 turned its attention to the rise of the Cali Cartel in the wake of the cocaine kingpin’s death. “Narcos: Mexico” has been renewed for Season 3 at Netflix.
Along with the renewal, Netflix announced that Wagner Moura — who played Pablo Escobar in the first two seasons of “Narcos” — will board Season 3 in order to direct two episodes of the season.
In addition, series showrunner Eric Newman will exit that role after five seasons and turn things over to series co-creator Carlos Bernard.
“I am grateful for my five years at the helm of ‘Narcos’ and ‘Narcos: Mexico’ and am immensely proud of what this spectacular team has achieved with these shows,” Newman said. “Carlo Bernard is the first person I ever spoke to about this project, over ten years ago, and I am extremely pleased to leave the steering of Season 3 of ‘Narcos: Mexico’ in his very capable hands.”
Originally intended as a fourth season of “Narcos,” which focused on the rise of the cocaine business in Colombia under Escobar and his Medellín Cartel,...

Netflix has renewed “Narcos: Mexico” for a third season, but showrunner Eric Newman is handing over the reins to Carlo Bernard.
Newman had been showrunner for all five seasons of the “Narcos” franchise, including the first three that centered on Pablo Escobar. The two most recent seasons, called “Narcos: Mexico,” shifted both the setting and time period, along with the majority of the cast.
Newman is under an overall deal with Netflix and will transition to overseeing the streaming service’s upcoming opioid drama “Painkiller,” “Escape From Spiderhead” with Chris Hemsworth, and “The Upper World” with Daniel Kaluuya. He will remain executive producer on “Narcos” alongside Bernard and Jose Padilla.

The narrative elements take center stage in Mars season 2, but the inclusion of non-fiction parallels is still a unique aspect of the show.
TV
When Nat Geo’s Mars first hit the scene, it was praised for its successful blending of speculative fiction and documentary-style non-fiction, but it was also criticized for the imbalance between an understated story of the future and a much more interesting look at the present-day state of our Mars aspirations. Viewers may be happy to hear that when the series returns on November 12, they’ll notice a shift towards a much more dramatic tale of love and loss on the red planet, but with that change of focus comes the occasional deficiency in the illustrative examples from our own situation on Earth.
In some episodes of the new season, the non-fiction explorations perfectly mirror what’s going on in the story of the Mars colonists,...
