The Old Guard 2 Moves Forward with Charlize Theron Returning and a New Director
After a few months of waiting and looking, The Old Guard 2 has found its director in Victoria Mahoney. Currently in the works at Netflix, the upcoming sequel will bring back Charlize Theron and the other core cast members of the original. After directing the original movie, Gina Prince-Bythewood opted not to return for the sequel, though she wished Mahoney well with her work on part two.

"I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre," said Prince-Bythewood in a statement, per Deadline. "I have decided not to direct the sequel, but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter."

"Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard,

Deadline reports that Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will all return to reprise their roles. Victoria Mahoney to Direct Charlize Theron in ‘The Old Guard’ Sequel
Netflix has tapped Victoria Mahoney to direct its sequel to “The Old Guard,” the superhero action-adventure led by Charlize Theron.

The Old Guard” premiered on Netflix in July 2020 and, by the streaming service’s vague metrics, appears to have been a hit, garnering 78 million views in its first four weeks. Along with Theron, the returning cast will include KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Gina Prince-Bythewood directed the first film, based on the comic book by Greg Rucka, but opted not to return for the follow-up because she’s busy working on several projects, including Sony’s “The Woman King” starring Viola Davis. Prince-Bythewood was eager to pass the reins to Mahoney, who recently served as second unit director on the J.J. Abrams-directed “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

Charlize Theron Says The Old Guard 2 Is Filming Next Year

Charlize Theron Says The Old Guard 2 Is Filming Next Year
According to star and executive producer Charlize Theron, a sequel to The Old Guard is ready to start production next year. The original Netflix comic book adaptation was one of the streamers big hits during the pandemic, with many people having nothing better to do that watch a lot of TV they otherwise would not have had time to get around to. The Old Guard was one of two recent adaptations of graphic novels written by Greg Rucka, with the other being ABC's Stumptown. While she didn't go into too much detail, Theron did confirm that the script was done and ready to go.

"Somehow it was meant to come out in [2020]," Charlize Theron said after the movie's release. "And it was meant to just be on people's TVs. In the end, that's why I think it was so successful. It thematically speaks to things that people were going through.

Martijn Lakemeyer Fights in the Indonesian War in Trailer for 'The East'

Martijn Lakemeyer Fights in the Indonesian War in Trailer for 'The East'
"The only way to destroy terror is with more terror." Magnolia Pictures has released an official trailer for a Dutch war movie titled The East, also known as De Oost in Dutch. The film premiered at the Nederlands Film Festival last year, and is getting a US release starting this August. A young Dutch soldier deployed to suppress post-wwii independence efforts in the Netherlands' colony of Indonesia, known as the Indonesian War of Independence (from 1945-1949), finds himself torn between duty and conscience when he joins an increasingly ruthless commander's elite squad. The tagline says it is "a war between duty and conscience." Isn't that what most wars are about? The East stars Martijn Lakemeyer as Johan de Vries, with Marwan Kenzari, Jonas Smulders, Abel van Gijlswijk, Coen Bril, and plenty of others. This looks like another worthwhile war thriller trying to address that guilty conscience of why white men felt so driven to colonize.

Black Adam Is Raging to Seek & Destroy in Cutting Edge Scene Teased by The Rock
As Dwayne Johnson draws his filming on Black Adam to a close, it also brings to an end the long list of behind the scenes images, diet videos and other Instagram posts that the action hero has been sharing with his followers throughout the movie's production. As another treat, Johnson gave those following his account a good look at some of the additional muscle visual effects that are being used to further enhance his already phenomenal physique. It is hard to believe that any superhero would need to add to the reason he was called The Rock, but even the best can need just a few finishing touches.

"Minutes away from shooting a very cool cutting edge scene for our movie, Black Adam. My skilled makeup artist, Bjoern Rehbein, is applying tiny white tracking dots to very specific areas of my body (legs included) so our Visual Effects team track

Fans have been treated to many social media posts by the former wrestler detailing his work out regimes and diet that have helped him keep in shape for the role.

Charlize Theron Says ‘Old Guard’ Sequel Script Complete, Filming to Begin Early Next Year (Exclusive)

Charlize Theron Says ‘Old Guard’ Sequel Script Complete, Filming to Begin Early Next Year (Exclusive)
Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”

It’s official! Charlize Theron tells me that the script is done for the sequel to “The Old Guard,” her Netflix film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. Cameras will start rolling in the first quarter of 2022. The gay couple, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli, will be back, too. “Oh, yeah!” Theron says. “They’re definitely there.” Meanwhile, Vin Diesel tells me that he has writers working on a “Fast & Furious” spinoff for Theron’s character, Cipher. One thing the Oscar winner won’t be doing is guest hosting “The Bachelor.” You’d think producers of the romance reality show would have asked Theron, an unabashed and vocal fan of the franchise. “They have not, goddamn it,” she cracked at her Africa Outreach Project benefit. Would she do it? “No!” she said. “I’d make a terrible host.

The Rock Reveals Black Adam Has Almost Wrapped Filming
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has revealed that he is almost done filming Black Adam, his debut in the Dceu. The actor has been working on the production in Atlanta and had already teased that he has been working out and dieting "unlike any other role of his entire career". While he has been sharing numerous posts of his meals and workout routines, it was one of his latest posts that offered a little something extra to a plate of ground tenderloin and broccoli.

In the post, which showed the meal of choice for the evening and some of its interesting nutritional value, The Rock revealed the news that work is almost done on the much anticipated entry into the DC Universe. While we are still to see much about the Black Adam itself, at least we now know that there are only three weeks of shooting left until the movie wraps.

‘Cruella’ Star Emma Stone Says Disney Villain Ursula Should Get Her Own Movie

‘Cruella’ Star Emma Stone Says Disney Villain Ursula Should Get Her Own Movie
Disney’s new “Cruella” tells the origin story of the iconic villain Cruella de Vil. Emma Stone stars as the titular character with Emma Thompson playing her nemesis, fashion designer Baroness von Hellman.

Variety’s senior culture and events editor Marc Malkin asked the cast of the film which other Disney villains they think should get a big-screen origin story.

Stone said it would be interesting to see Ursula, who will be played by Melissa McCarthy in the upcoming live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” headline her own film.

“She’s an octopus and the world you would get to live in, like Ursula’s parents and what happened there,” Stone said. “You’ve never really seen a non-human Disney villain be explored in that way.”

Thompson joked that Ursula’s trauma could come from having to continuously experience an octopus’ worst nightmare. “The parents keep giving her a shirt that only has four arms,
