Kathryn Newton channeled her inner “Lisa Frankenstein” for a special screening of the film at the Hollywood Athletic Club, donning a dramatic black corseted Vera Wang gown with exaggerated tulle hips.
“There was no other dress option. I have a little heart I took from my last boyfriend,” Newton told Variety on the black carpet, pointing to her blood-red heart-shaped choker and giggling, “Just kidding – I don’t have a boyfriend!”
In the film from Zelda Williams, Newton’s Lisa and a re-animated corpse dubbed “The Creature” (Cole Sprouse) embark on a murderous journey to make him whole by claiming some of his missing body parts from the living. Even though Sprouse doesn’t speak a single word in Diablo Cody’s campy script, communicating only through grunts, Newton says they had no trouble selling their chemistry.
“Have you looked at Cole Sprouse? It’s very easy to have chemistry.

Guy Pearce has recently wrapped production on “Inside,” an Australian crime thriller and coming of age drama film. The picture is the debut feature of Charles Williams, whose short film “All These Creatures” won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.
The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace, Tara Morice, Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).

The word Finestkind has no specific meaning, and we’re told so by one of the protagonists of the film, which is also called the same. It could be something cool, something exceptional, or something much different. Although in the film, Finestkind happens to be the name of a fishing boat, which plays a very (actually the most) important part in the narrative. Director Brian Helgeland’s 2023 crime drama, starring names like Ben Foster, Toby Wallace, Jenna Ortega, and the indomitable Tommy Lee Jones, is a film where you can see a lot of effort. This is a very personal story for the director, as he has been waiting almost three decades to tell it. As touching as that sounds, what we have here is a film that’s all over the place with the narrative. But the story it tells can be described with a term I generally refrain from using: heart.

Plot: A law school-bound University grad (Toby Wallace) decides to spend his summer working with his fisherman half-brother (Ben Foster) in the hopes of finding adventure. But, he soon realizes that despite the rewarding work, you can only push things so far, as debts pile up and the brothers flirt with organized crime.
Review: You can understand where Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind is going from the start. As soon as fresh-faced Charlie (Toby Wallace) convinces his taciturn older half-brother, Tom (Ben Foster), to let him join his crew of hard-living fishermen, you know it’s not going to end with a pat on the back for a job well done. This is especially true once he lays eyes on a heartbreaking local girl, Mabel (Jenna Ortega), who he spies doing a drug deal with a crew member. Yet, even though nothing terribly surprising happens over the two-hour running time, it...

What’s Good: Jenna Ortega, Tommy Lee Jones and Ben Foster are always a delight.
What’s Bad: The movie doesn’t know what it wants to be, or what it is, and the entire plot feels pointless.

Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. He’s now 62. “The joke is that I wrote it before Toby Wallace and Jenna Ortega were born and Ben Foster was 10 years old. It’s very strange, but everything happens for a reason. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.

The new film is called “Finestkind,” and while it stars the “Scream” and “Wednesday” breakout, the focus is on two brothers, played by Ben Foster and Toby Wallace. Here’s the logline, from Paramount+, which is debuting “Finestkind” later this year.

Tommy Lee Jones has yet to anchor a series in Taylor Sheridan’s vast TV universe — but at least he’s starring in an upcoming film from the producer, the crime drama “Finestkind.” You can watch the brand-new trailer for the Paramount+ film above.
In “Finestkind,” Jones plays the father of two sons who were raised in very different worlds (Ben Foster and Toby Wallace), who reunite over a fateful summer, first putting their father’s fishing boat in jeopardy and then embarking into even more dangerous waters.
According to the official synopsis, the movie is “set against the backdrop of commercial fishing, the story takes on primal stakes when desperate circumstances force the brothers to strike a deal with a violent Boston crime gang.”
The movie also stars Jenna Ortega, Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford. Fun fact: an earlier iteration of...

Fisherman, family, blue-collar life, debts that pile up, and crime all swirl together in the new drama, “Finestkind” from Oscar-winning writer/director Brian Helgeland, who won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for “LA Confidential” in 1998. Helgeland’s done a ton since, writing the Oscar-winning “Mystic River” for Clint Eastwood, “Man on Fire” for Tony Scott, and directing the Jackie Robinson biopic “42,” “Legend” with Tom Hardy, and now, “Finestkind.”
“Finestkind” stars Ben Foster, Toby Wallace, Tommy Lee Jones, and Jenna Ortega, and it’s a crime drama about a crew of fishermen who tread dangerous waters after their debts start piling up.

Tracing the evolution of a fictional motorbike gang known as the Vandals, writer-director Jeff Nichols’s The Bikeriders takes its inspiration from a photobook of the same name by influential mid-20th-century photographer Danny Lyon. A major contributor to the “new realism” photography movement, Lyon lived alongside his leather-clad petrolhead subjects for months at a time, helping him create urgent, spontaneous images of their outlaw lifestyle that oozed authenticity. Unfortunately, those latter qualities are in short supply in the film, but the sheer exuberance of the story and the stylistic brio of Nichols’s direction often compensate.
The Bikeriders is narrated by Kathy (Jodie Comer), the girlfriend of fiercely committed young Vandals member Benny (Austin Butler). She relays the idiosyncrasies and transgressions of the gang from a slight remove as it evolves from a blue-collar fraternity and surrogate family to a nihilistic crime syndicate. As endearing as Kathy’s disapproving bemusement can be,...

Director Jeff Nichols’ clear admiration for the work of photojournalist Danny Lyon and his 1968 book The Bikeriders that chronicles the lives of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, is evident in a new drama of the same name about a fictitious motorcycle gang called the Vandals. Nichols has teamed up once more with long-time collaborator and cinematographer Adam Stone to recreate the film-grainy look and feel of 1965’s Chicago by bringing Lyon’s black-and-white photos into full, colourful and vibrant life.
Katy (Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer with a thick and rather amusing northwestern dialect that casts doubt on her casting) is the battle-worn and cynical narrator of the film, as she explains to the Danny Lyon character in the film (played by Mike Faist) how she first got into the gang, married the most eligible bikerider, Danny, and eventually found herself forced into a ‘love triangle’ for Danny’s affections...

‘Adapt to survive’ is a fitting mantra for the latest tense drama from The Assistant writer-director Kitty Green. This time, she places the star of her #MeToo-styled 2019 film, actor Julia Garner, in the heart of the Australian Outback to serve drinks to booze-addled patrons of a dysfunctional pub.
Inspired by fascinating 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie, The Royal Hotel takes a compelling look at ingrained toxic masculinity and the dominance of alcohol culture, as well as sobering isolation through the eyes of two backpacking female foreigners. An uneasy, maddening decline into the inevitable, Green’s film explores the effects of the unhealthy environment on two independent young women and the choices they must make for their well-being.
‘Gen Z’ Americans Hanna (Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick of Glass Onion fame) reluctantly take live-in bartending jobs fund the rest of their Australian trip after finances run out. Dropped off at the rundown Royal...

If there’s a theme cutting across Kitty Green’s work, it’s the dangers that lurk in everyday society for young, idealistic women. Whether using the tools of re-enactment in the hybrid documentary Casting JonBenet or a process-focused minimalism in the #MeToo workplace drama The Assistant, she never approaches the shared subject in the same way.
With The Royal Hotel, Green further expands her toolkit by drawing on the conventions of genre filmmaking. She doesn’t overtly tip her hand as to what kind of situation Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) walk into when they gain employment at the titular bar. As two broke Americans in desperate need of cash on a work-tourism trip in Australia, they have little choice but to take a gig bartending at the lone watering hole in a desolate mining town.
The film unnervingly aligns our experience with that of Hanna and Liv.

“They’re all nice for a minute,” says Kitty Green, director of the sizzling thriller The Royal Hotel. She’s talking about the men that make up most of the film’s ensemble cast — Australian miners in a remote, rugged, Outback town — who can pivot from playful pub banter to grinning malevolence without warning. What might they do after one pint too many?
It’s a question any young woman tending bar has asked herself, and in Green’s frighteningly plausible tale, the heavily outnumbered women serving these men drinks...

Deep in the Australian Outback, Kitty Green is, once again, asking us to sit on a knife’s edge, where the threat of violence is constant. In The Assistant, which also starred Julia Garner as a headstrong underling in an environment dominated by men, Green was attuned to the systemic abuses of the entertainment industry. In The Royal Hotel, she considers the ways infrastructural inequities pervade even in the most remote corners of our world.
Green’s film is loosely based on the 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie, in which director Pete Gleeson provided a glimpse into a remote mining town where backpackers are cycled in and out as bartenders, or, as a sandwich board labels them in The Royal Hotel, “fresh meat” to be ogled at and harassed. Here, that fresh meat is Hanna (Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick), two American tourists who’ve desperately sought out a work-tourism exchange program...

After running out of money on their holiday to Australia, Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) look for work to keep things alive. There's not much available, but then they spot something. "Physically, it's not a demanding job. The only thing that can be a little bothersome is the remoteness of the location," the traveling holiday agent tells them, before adding: "You're gonna have to be comfortable with a little male attention." Judging by their reactions, neither of them is particularly thrilled about the idea, but with no cash left, what choice do they have?
Hanna and Liv are driven to a highly remote dive bar called The Royal Hotel run by Billy (an excellent Hugo Weaving), an alcoholic with a short fuse, and Carol (Ursula Yovich), his long-suffering partner trying to hold things together. The red flags pile up almost immediately -- their employers have no interest in their travel documents,...

“The Royal Hotel,” the setting of Kitty Green’s ulcer-inducing thriller, is a sun-baked bar in a rural Australian mining town surrounded by terrain so monotone that Canadian backpackers Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) can’t keep their eyes open on the way in. The two young women arrive at their barmaid jobs with a sense of palpable disorientation. They’ve quite literally woken up in Oz, and they don’t know the people, the customs, the nicknames for the local ales, or the way out.
The customers are, as you might expect, gruff and girl-starved. (The chalkboard sign heralding their first shift reads: “Fresh meat.”) Hanna and Liv are steeled for that. They’re not idiots, even if their knowledge of Australia is pretty much limited to Fosters beer and kangaroos. Still, Green, a keen and steely talent, puts them — and us — through hell.
The worst part?...

In 2019, Australian documentary filmmaker Kitty Green made her first narrative movie, a piercing almost cinéma vérité-style movie focused on an office assistant in a Tribeca film company run by a not-so-thinly disguised Harvey Weinstein. The male culture there and the sexual acts of the boss made it almost a modern horror story at the height of the #MeToo movement. For Green’s second narrative film she has changed up the filmmaking style considerably, but with The Royal Hotel which premiered last week at Telluride and now premieres tonight at the Toronto Film Festival, she is taking an even deeper look at the dark side of men as seen through the female gaze in a broken down hotel bar in a desolate part of the Australian Outback.

L.A. Confidential Oscar-winning scribe Brian Helgeland had cracked a sequel with the original author James Ellroy to the City of Angels film noir — but no one bit, not even the pic’s original studio, Warner Bros.
Helgeland shared his war story on pitching the sequel around town in Deadline’s Toronto Studio. The first L.A. Confidential won Helgeland an Adapted Screenplay Oscar as well as a Supporting Actress Oscar for Kim Basinger. The pic, directed by the late Curtis Hanson, was nominated for nine Oscars including Best Picture.
Helgeland tells us, “James Ellroy and I worked out an elaborate pitch for L.A. Confidential 2 that takes place during the Patty Hearst (era), when the Symbionese Liberation Army came down to L.A., and we had Guy Pearce attached and Russell (Crowe) and Chadwick Boseman playing a young cop working for Mayor Bradley.”

We’ve got dadcore porn here. If you’re a father and you’ve ever wondered if you led your son astray, you could live vicariously through Ray Eldridge (Tommy Lee Jones) and Dennis Sykes (Tim Daly) and know you can always come through at the eleventh hour. Because even though the motto at the heart of Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind is that the time between birth and death is what truly matters, the film reminds us you can actually right all your wrongs from that in-between with a final expression of love. Apology, hug, pile of cash, bullet, or all the above.

There’s a stagnating whiff of familiarity hanging over Finestkind, Brian Helgeland’s personally-informed portrait of a splintered family of fishermen struggling to reconnect with each other over choppy New Bedford, Massachusetts, waters.
Although anchored by a number of strong performances, particularly those of Ben Foster and fresh-faced Toby Wallace as estranged half-brothers attempting to find common ground despite their different upbringings, Helgeland’s meandering film still feels stuck in another place in time. It actually isn’t surprising to learn that the writer-director, himself coming from a Norwegian family of fisherfolk working in the U.S. industry since the 1930s, had initially crafted a version of the script 25 years ago, at the time offering the the role of Wallace’s Charlie to Heath Ledger. Over the following years, Helgeland would complete three more versions of the script, but while the end result is set in the present day, there’s a palpable throwback,...

For an hour, Finestkind is the kind of movie they don’t make any more, and just when you’re starting to adapt to its gentle, circadian rhythms (which is about halfway through), it becomes the kind of movie they make all the time. Though it just about works, it’s a curious hybrid of emotional felladrama and gangster realism, something writer Brian Helgeland has essayed before, notably with his script for Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River. A few years back, this could have been a Malpaso production too, and it’s not hard to imagine Eastwood in the role played here by Tommy Lee Jones, an awards-friendly supporting role that gives the veteran actor his very own mini-Gran Torino.

I don’t know where to start on “Finestkind,” the saccharine, incomprehensible northeastern America fishing family drama from writer-director Brian Helgeland. As I watched this turgid muddle, a messy ball of nonsensical threads and worse performances, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Roger Ebert’s old maxim: No good film is too long, and no bad film is too short.
But what about a film so driven off course it needs a come to Jesus moment? “Finestkind” is that sort of picture. Clunky, nauseating, and perfunctory, it’s shocking that before the World Premiere screening in Toronto Helgeland called the movie a deeply personal work, the type of film he wished had been his first, and the kind he fears might be his last.
The introduction was enough to make you hope for a merely mindlessly entertaining flick. Unfortunately, “Finestkind” doesn’t even pass that lowest of bars.

“Finestkind,” the name of both Brian Helgeland’s new film and the high-line fishing boat Tommy Lee Jones captains within it, is one of those words that New Englanders find hard to define, but seem to have no trouble using in a sentence. It means quality — of fish, of people, of principles — and it sets the bar for the shaggy family portrait Helgeland crafts around two half-brothers wrestling with their place in the blue-collar New Bedford community.
The movie, alas, is just so-so, tripping over its own feet for the first couple reels until such time as the siblings cross the Northern Line to (illegally) dredge for scallops in Canadian waters, and then it gets good. Not the genre elements, mind you. There’s a stock plot in which the brothers need $100,000 to get the Finestkind ship out of impound, turning to a harebrained heroin-smuggling plot that goes sideways in...

Plot: Two backpacking Canadians (Julia Garner & Jessica Henwick) find themselves low on cash and work as bartenders in a small pup in a remote mining town in Australia.
Review: Kitty Green’s The Royal Hotel is exceptional for about ninety percent of its running time. Beautifully shot at an abandoned bar in Yatina, South Australia, a town that consists of only twenty-nine people, the movie is a thoroughly compelling look at the culture of booze, brawling, and misogyny in remote Australia and what happens when two regular, North American girls are dropped right in the middle of it. But, the finale gets a little too close to straight-ahead thriller territory, ending what had up to then been a compelling drama about menace and the constant threat of violence on a somewhat false note. It starts like Wake in Fright but ends like Straw Dogs, and the switch-up doesn’t work.

Pete Gleeson’s 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie came and went on the festival circuit, but it made a strong impression on those who caught it. Following two young Finnish tourists who get a work placement at a bar in a middle-of-nowhere Australian mining town, it captured harrowing footage of subjects putting up with a bombardment of sexist remarks and behaviors from the (largely male) regulars and their manager. What made Gleeson’s film so effective was how irrelevant the camera was; the town’s toxic, misogynist culture was so normalized that no one batted an eye at what they put the two women through.
Kitty Green saw Hotel Coolgardie while on a festival jury, and the film impacted her so much she’s now adapted it into The Royal Hotel, a tense yet uneven thriller that sensationalizes its source material in almost all of the right places. In Green’s take,...
