Sex. Paranoia. Betrayal. These are the are among the first words that come to mind when we talk about the cult horror hit, It Follows. A movie that serves as a refreshing splash of originality and imagination that has gone on to become a mainstay in the Blu-ray players of horror lovers everywhere. While it’s a movie that certainly receives its share of praise for being fresh with its concept and quite creative in its depiction of the movie’s antagonistic entity- it also doesn’t seem to get the analysis it deserves beyond those initial praises. While the freshness and high-quality storytelling are certainly not up for debate in my book- this movie is awesome- I must say that beyond all the sex, paranoia, and betrayal, there’s also a surprising layer of tenderness, friendship, and empowerment that carry it through the trending page and into the pop culture zeitgeist forever.

Horror movies in any era reflect people's collective anxieties. Sometimes, the source of the horror - be it a psycho killer in a slasher or a mythical monster in a supernatural horror film - is a metaphorical stand-in for what causes people to feel anxious, and sometimes it's the characters' response to danger and horror that represents the source of anxiety in people. So, for example, among the best horror movies of the 2020s is The Host, which is premised on the kind of social isolation that the world was forced into during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The development of the discourse on body politics over the past years prompted director Coralie Fargeat to make The Substance, the highly successful horror movie starring Demi Moore. Meanwhile, the trend for remakes also continues in 2024, with Nosferatu, which earned high Rotten Tomatoes ratings on its debut. The best horror movies of the past...

Peacock is developing a limited series about Thomas Randolph called “The Thing About Tommy,” sources tell Variety.
In April, Randolph was sentenced to at least sixty years in prison for the murder of his wife and the man he hired to kill her. This was not his first conviction or his first deceased wife, however; Randolph is also known as Black Widower for having been married six times, with four of his wives ending up dead, though he maintains his innocence.
The true crime series will be written by Bruce Marshall Romans, who has previously written and produced on “Shantaram” on Apple TV+, “Deputy” on Fox and “Messiah” and “Marvel’s The Punisher” on Netflix.
Romans serves as executive producer alongside Jason Blum, Chris Dickie and Jeremy Gold for Blumhouse and Liz Cole for NBC News Studios. Universal Content Productions is the studio.

Cinephiles tend to be reluctant to call a new movie a favorite, instead favoring tried and true paradigms, but It Follows is a rare contemporary film that immediately struck a wide swath of viewers — myself included — as a modern classic upon its release in 2014. Comfortingly familiar yet invigoratingly fresh, I’ve only come to appreciate it more since, and Second Sight Films’ new 4K Ultra HD edition proves it hasn’t lost any staying power after nearly a decade.
The plot is deceptively simple: after a sexual encounter, 19-year-old Jay begins being followed by… something. The supernatural force takes a human form but never sticks to one for long; it could be a familiar face, an obscene stranger, or anyone in between. The only recourse seems to be passing it on to someone else via sexual intercourse. Otherwise, it will kill her, then the person who gave it to her,...

It Follows is a deeply unsettling, yet beautifully produced coming of age creeper. The story of a young woman (Maika Monroe) who is relentlessly stalked by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter, it taps into primal fears such as death, abandonment, betrayal, and social ostracism. Hailed as a modern horror classic, it entrenches itself in the logic of grim and bloody fairy tales in which youngsters must fend for themselves and use their wits to outsmart and survive an evil adversary.

"They try to take our culture, try to take our freedom, and you know they'll try to take our babies, too..." A24 has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Earth Mama, marking the feature directorial debut of Olympian Savanah Leaf - who has been making a bunch of shorts before this. It first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, a last minute addition to the fest's line-up. With two children in foster care, Gia, a pregnant single mother pitted against the system, fights to reclaim her family. In her close-knit Bay Area community, she works to make a life for herself and for her kids, in this singular debut feature from filmmaker Savanah Leaf. A glowing breakout at Sundance 2023, starring Tia Nomore, Erika Alexander, Doechii, and Dominic Fike. With Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Olivia Luccardi, and Bokeem Woodbine. The tender, moving film earned great reviews. This is a stunning trailer + poster.

The Warner Bros. TV series from creators William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn wrapped with a sentimental gathering of its leads having one last drink together — Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (the terrific Amanda Warren), Assistant Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits), Det. Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez), Det. Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin), Officer Brandy Quinlan (breakout Olivia Luccardi), Officer Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) and Capt. Stan Yenko (Richard Kind).
Yenko gave a toast to Haywood, who thanked her for bringing him back onto the force where he “came to love it all over again.” His words brought Haywood to tears.
The episode wrapped up a double homicide from the previous episode in Ruskin Gardens, where Quinlan had been living as part of Haywood’s unique initiative to have officers live in crime-ridden areas.

The Blumhouse-produced horror thriller Soft & Quiet involves a limited cast for its claustrophobic settings. The choice of relying on only a handful of main cast members makes sense given how the entirety of the movie takes place within a matter of a few hours. Building upon horror movies with social commentary, like Blumhouse’s Get Out, Soft & Quiet seems to show a women's get-together. However, things soon take a dark turn when these women reveal their white supremacist views, which set off a chain of chaotically violent events. Helmed by Beth de Araújo in her directorial debut, Soft & Quiet is a haunting insight into the race relations plaguing modern America.

East New York was cancelled by CBS earlier this week, but there is still some hope that the series could be saved and renewed for a second season. The show's studio, Warner Bros Television, had started to informally shop the series to other outlets in recent weeks when renewal talks with CBS weren't going as well as hoped.
Starring Amanda Warren, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi, and Lavel Schley, East New York revolves around the officers and detectives of the 74th precinct in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn.

It was good news-bad news day for CBS drama viewers yesterday. Fans of S.W.A.T. rejoiced when the network reversed its cancellation decision and renewed the veteran procedural for a 13-episode seventh and final season. But that tipped the scale for another CBS cop drama, freshman East New York, which was canceled shortly after. And in a case of bad timing, by being axed during a writers strike, East New York is far less likely to get a reprieve.
While not as established as S.W.A.T., East New York, starring Amanda Warren, has developed a loyal following, and its cancellation has sparked a backlash, especially in light of the fact that the cop show drew bigger linear numbers than two other CBS drama series that have been renewed for next season, fellow freshman So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas, both of which come from CBS’ sister studios CBS Studios.

Not all the news coming out of CBS today is good news: After reversing its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., the Eye network has cancelled freshman dramas East New York and True Lies, TVLine has learned.
East New York starred Amanda Warren as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, who ran a police station in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. The newly promoted Haywood faced resistance from veteran officers and detectives who didn’t like the changes she was trying to make. Jimmy Smits co-starred as Haywood’s mentor John Suarez. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lavel Schley and Olivia Luccardi led the supporting cast.

CBS has canceled both the police procedural “East New York” and “True Lies” after just one season.
According to sources, the decision to cancel the series came down to CBS haggling with the series’ studio Warner Bros. Television over the show’s budget, which included CBS asking that the cast of the show not get the customary pay increases going into the second season. It has previously been reported that CBS has renewed other shows on its lineup, like the comedy “Bob Hearts Abishola,” after asking the cast to take pay cuts or by shifting series regulars to recurring status.

CBS has canceled cop drama East New York, starring Amanda Warren, after one season.
The decision comes after CBS today reversed its Friday decision to cancel S.W.A.T., renewing the veteran drama for a 13-episode seventh and final season.
It also follows lengthy renewal negotiations between the network and East New York‘s lead studio, Warner Bros. Television. In addition to the inevitable squabbles over budget, there was an additional business issue that complicated talks. As Deadline reported, it had to do with additional streaming rights CBS had requested that go beyond the now-standard stacking, which allows networks to stream current season of their series on their digital platforms.

However, progress had been made and East New York‘s renewal prospects went up Friday when CBS, somewhat surprisingly, canceled long-running drama S.W.A.T. However, following backlash from fans, S.W.A.T. was uncanceled.

Screen Rant is pleased to present an exclusive clip from this week's episode of East New York, which centers Haywood and Suarez in a tough new case. In its first season, the CBS series follows a working-class neighborhood on the edge of Brooklyn in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification. Deputy inspector Regina Haywood leads her team with a strong sense of justice, hoping to create a police force that engages with its community rather than opposes it.
East New York was created by Mike Flynn (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) and William M. Finkelstein (known as a producer on L.A. Law & Law & Order). Alongside Warren's Haywood, Jimmy Smits (who also appeared in LA Law) stars as her mentor, Chief John Suarez. We’re finally going to get to meet a character we’ve only thus far heard about on East New York, and based on TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the March 12 episode, we’re going to enjoy seeing more of her. Debi Mazar joins the cast in a recurring role as Officer Brandy Quinlan’s (Olivia Luccardi) mother, Ann-Marie. (She’ll appear in at least three episodes before the end of the season.) Quinlan has mentioned her mom, a recovering addict, in the past, and just in our clip alone, we get a sense of just how tense things are between the two women. When Quinlan checks that her mom’s still living in Boston, Ann-Marie realizes she never updated her daughter on her address. And after Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) walks in and the two meet, he leaves; Ann-Marie remarks, “he’s handsome.” But Quinlan turns...

Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive clip from this week's episode of East New York. The CBS police procedural series follows a group of detectives and police officers who work in a particularly dangerous and crime-filled precinct in New York. The recently promoted deputy inspector Regina Haywood has her work cut out for her every week, but thankfully she has an incredible team behind her.
East New York, which was created by Mike Flynn and William Finkelstein, boasts a strong cast who shine alongside Warren. Jimmy Smits, who is no stranger to cop shows thanks to his work on NYPD Blue and LA Law, plays Haywood's mentor Chief John Suarez. Elizabeth Rodriguez (Miami Vice) plays Detective Crystal Morales, while Kevin Rankin takes on the role of Tommy Killian, whose approach to policing is rather old school. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Richard King, Lavel Schley, and Olivia Luccardi also star.

Whilst it’s set in 1996, Candy Land reminds me very much of the 70s exploitation era of filmmaking, where the lines between genres blurred and a wide variety of subject matter was explored by filmmakers willing to take chances on stories that the mainstream wouldn’t tell… The latter of which is certainly the case here as writer/director John Swab tells the story of Remy (Olivia Luccardi; It Follows), a seemingly naive and devout young woman, who finds herself cast out from her religious cult. With no place to turn, she immerses herself into the underground world of truck stop sex workers a.k.a. “lot lizards,” courtesy of her hosts, Sadie (Sam Quartin; Body Brokers), Riley (Eden Brolin; Yellowstone), Liv (Virginia Rand) and Levi (Owen Campbell; X...

Grimy truck stops serve as prime real estate in horror. The setting invokes a sense of desolate lawlessness as strangers pass through a revolving door of anonymity. Don’t even bother entering the filthy, unkept bathrooms; bad things always happen there. It’s precisely this setting where Candy Land unfurls its sleazy slasher filled with broken dreams, religious repression, and a sensitive depiction of sex workers right before a grim turn.

Plot: After a religious young woman joins a group of truck stop sex workers (a.k.a. lot lizards), someone starts murdering people in and around the truck stop.
Review: After making a handful of crime dramas and thrillers, writer/director John Swab shifts into the horror genre with his fifth feature Candy Land – but he definitely didn’t just dive into formula or clichê with his first horror project, as evident from the fact that he cited ‘90s cult films like Bully and Welcome to the Dollhouse as sources of inspiration. Candy Land has been described as a truck stop slasher, and it does become that in its second half, but the influence of ‘90s indie dramas is clearly felt in the movie. It’s even set in the ‘90s; around Christmas 1996, to be exact. So it’s a bit of a shame that it’s being released in January,...
