Gold Derby’s top news stories for Jan. 3, 2025. ‘The Franchise’ is canceled at HBO after just a single season

HBO has decided against a second season greenlight for The Franchise, its original superhero movie satire from creator/executive producer Jon Brown and executive producers Sam Mendes and Armando Iannucci. It was originally reported by Gold Derby’s sister site Deadline. “We’re so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the tremendously talented team behind The Franchise, especially Sam Mendes, Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci, and this hilarious ensemble of actors,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season, we look forward to collaborating with all of them in the future.”

Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein and Isaac Powell starred in The Franchise, with Richard E. Grant and Daniel Brühl among the recurring cast.

The critically acclaimed DreamWorks Animation film will begin streaming exclusively Peacock on Friday, Jan. 24, four months after “The Wild Robot” debuted in U.S. theaters on Sept. 27, 2024.

The streaming release follows the animated movie’s box office success, which saw “The Wild Robot” take the top spot at the domestic box office on its opening weekend. It has since crossed $323 million globally and currently ranks as 2024’s No. 1 most-watched non-sequel animated movie.

The series, which stars Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet, follows Hsu’s Ruby as she starts to realize that everyone she has ever slept with is starting to die off—in the order she slept with them. As more complications enter the situation, she becomes determined to figure out why it's all happening and how to stop it.

The project was actually originally based on an Australian show from 2011, though it has undergone some changes for its American adaptation. Only one season of Laid has been confirmed, and all episodes are now available for audiences to watch.

The holiday season and the year are both coming to an end. Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager are going to help viewers welcome in the new year with an upcoming special. Both the show and the night are set to be filled with appearances from a variety of stars.

Kotb and Hager have both hosted Today‘s first fourth-hour weekday broadcast together since 2019. That year, Hager joined the show after Kathie Lee Gifford’s departure, with Kotb having been part of the series since 2007.

Kotb is set to leave the show this upcoming January 10, 2025. However, before that, she and Hager are still set to help viewers ring in the new year with an upcoming special.

NBC promoted the upcoming special on its website, highlighting Kotb and Hager as the perfect hosts for the event.

The team behind Laid couldn’t be happier to have included Amanda Knox in the Peacock comedy series.

Adapted from the Australian project of the same name, the show centers on Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), who realizes that her previous lovers are dying and sets out to understand why this is happening. Zosia Mamet co-stars as Ruby’s best friend Aj, while other castmembers include Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez.

One surprising member of the cast is Knox, who makes an appearance in the final episode of the first season that is currently streaming. Knox became a public figure after she was convicted and then ultimately acquitted of the 2007 murder of her roommate in Italy. Co-showrunner Sally Bradford McKenna describes herself to The Hollywood Reporter as a big true-crime fan who saw Knox as the right fit for a role, given the series’ story.

“I’m obsessed with her,” Bradford McKenna says of Knox.

The co-creators of Laid explain why the cameos from familiar faces like Barbie actors and Marvel stars are more than just mere cameos. Developed by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, and based on the Australian series of the same name, Laid debuted on Peacock in December. It stars Stephanie Hsu, known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, as Ruby. Once all of her former sex partners start dying off, often in strange ways, Ruby and her roommate Aj (Zosia Mamet) try to solve the mystery of what's going on.

Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu), the protagonist of the Peacock comedy “Laid,” is variously described as “selfish,” “a nightmare,” “the worst person I have ever met” and belonging “in jail.” Hsu’s performance and Ruby’s characterization as a whole are indeed intensely off-putting, in ways both intentional and not. But Ruby’s karmic comeuppance in this series, adapted by sitcom veterans Nahnatchka Khan (“Fresh off the Boat”) and Sally Bradford McKenna (“The Goldbergs”) from an Australian show of the same name, doesn’t affect her directly. Instead, everyone she’s ever slept with starts to die — often in outlandish ways, always in the order she had sex with them.

This morbid premise evokes the late, great “Lovesick.” But unlike that British series, in which the hero’s Sti leads him to revisit past relationships, the heightened stakes of “Laid” present a tonal hurdle the eight-episode season proves unable to surmount.
