Hollywood is in the early stages of an artificial intelligence overhaul that will change the entire moviemaking process. In 2025, that wave could begin to sweep through a sector that is vital to the blockbusters that keep the film industry going: visual effects.
Experts and AI developers tell TheWrap that generative AI programs could be just months away from advancing to a level that would enable studios to apply them throughout their visual effects production systems. And that could have stark implications for the VFX labor pool, both in Los Angeles and around the world.
Runway, the New York-based company that has become one of the early top names in developing AI software for film/TV production and struck a partnership with Lionsgate, can currently produce key frames at a resolution of 720p, far lower than the 4K resolution of modern cinemas and TVs, Erik Weaver, director of virtual and adaptive...

HBO’s Girls became the show for the struggling millennial, and Laid, a Peacock original with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes feels like the perfect follow-up. Girls had an intense six-season run, following the trials and tribulations of four 20-somethings struggling to embrace, accept, and get a grip on adulthood. From false pregnancies to being unemployed, awkward sex to toxic friendships, Lena Dunham’s popular show covered every single young adult nightmare.
Like Sex and the City, the 2010s series continues to find popularity today, uniting generations of young women on their path to achieving (or eternally searching for) economic, personal, and romantic success and stability. Starring Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Stephanie Hsu and The Decameron's Zosia Mamet, Laid is Peacock’s most recent millennial comedy show. The shocking cliffhanger ending of Peacock's Laid touches on major questions, like why Ruby's exes are dying, while setting up an exciting second season. The dark comedy starts with Stephanie Hsu's Ruby Yao discovering that Brandon, her ex-boyfriend from college, has died. After going to the funeral, she leaves with Jeffrey, her other ex-boyfriend and Brandon's best friend. After a fight, Jeffrey gets out of the Uber and is immediately hit by a car.
While this could be one big coincidence, Ruby and her true crime-obsessed best friend Aj quickly discover that all her previous sexual partners are dying in the order that she slept with them. The two set out to discover the cause, warn Ruby's exes, and prevent as many deaths as possible. At the same time, Ruby tries to figure out her place in a love triangle with her ex who won't die and her idyllic client.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Laid!
Peacock’s dark comedy, Laid, includes a cast of comedians and actors featuring Oscar-nominee Stephanie Hsu. The show follows a 33-year-old woman named Ruby Yao, who discovers that her exes are starting to die. She works alongside her best friend, Aj, and her ex, Richie, to figure out why the characters she slept with are dropping dead in hilarious and absurd ways. At the same time, she tries to navigate her feelings for her new party-planning client, Isaac.
Laid thrives off the fact that the characters, especially Ruby, are deeply flawed and make reckless decisions. This debaucherous show includes a wild and unruly premise through which Ruby can process her past and grow. At the same time, the people around her also become better versions of themselves. Ultimately, the cast of predominantly established actors and comedians does an excellent job getting the audience...

Amanda Knox made an unexpected appearance in the season finale of Peacock’s Laid, and one of the show’s stars, Zosia Mamet, opened up about how it all came about. Based on the 2011 Australian series of the same name, Laid stars Stephanie Hsu as Ruby Yao, a 33-year-old single woman who realizes her former lovers are dying in strange and unexpected circumstances. Mamet plays Ruby’s best friend, Aj, a true-crime obsessive who frequently talks about the respect she has for Knox. Knox spent almost four years in prison in Italy after being convicted in 2007 for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher. She was later acquitted by the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation in 2015, a decision that didn’t go down well with the family and friends of Meredith Kercher. Laid, which dropped its entire eight-episode season on December 19, sees Ruby sleep with Aj’s on-and-off boyfriend, shattering their friendship in the process.

Peacock’s new dark comedy Laid stars the ensemble cast of Stephanie Hsu, Zosia Mamet, Tommy Martinez and Michael Angarano.
Hsu portrays Ruby, a somewhat selfish woman in her 30s who works as an event coordinator, and Zosia Mamet portrays her best friend Aj, who has an intense fascination with true crime. Aj is the one to point out the trend of Ruby’s former partners dying, which makes the premise of the show. Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the Season 1 finale of Laid
Stacked with a talented list of guest stars that includes Finneas O’Connell, Simu Liu and Chloe Fineman, Peacock‘s Laid saves the biggest shock for last.
Zosia Mamet recently opened up about her top-secret finale scene with Amanda Knox in the dark romantic comedy series, now streaming on Peacock, noting that caution was taken out of “respect” to her privacy.
“We kept the set very small that night because we didn’t want any spoilers and wanted to respect Amanda’s privacy,” Mamet told IndieWire. “It wasn’t dissimilar to the scene that we shot. She’s wonderful and so kind and so smart and so open about her experience. She’s a force. She’s one of the strongest people I’ve ever met.”

The showrunners behind Peacock’s latest raunchy comedy, Laid, offered a hopeful update for a possible Season 2.
The series, which stars Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet, follows Hsu’s Ruby as she starts to realize that everyone she has ever slept with is starting to die off—in the order she slept with them. As more complications enter the situation, she becomes determined to figure out why it's all happening and how to stop it.
The project was actually originally based on an Australian show from 2011, though it has undergone some changes for its American adaptation. Only one season of Laid has been confirmed, and all episodes are now available for audiences to watch.

“Laid” follows Stephanie Hsu’s Ruby as she comes to the grim realization that a growing number of her ex-partners have become victim to various maladies — all of which have resulted in death.
But instead of sex-shaming, co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna (“Son of Zorn”) used the outlandish premise — which originated from an Australian format — as an opportunity for Ruby to reflect on her behavior during each relationship, serving as a jumping off point for some internal growth.
“From the beginning, we, the writers, Peacock and Stephanie, wanted this to be sex positive, not at all shaming, not at all judgmental,” Bradford McKenna told TheWrap. “In having to go back and look at all these guys and girls, it’s not so much, ‘Who were they and what happened?’ but ‘Who was I when I was with them?'”

The team behind Laid couldn’t be happier to have included Amanda Knox in the Peacock comedy series.
Adapted from the Australian project of the same name, the show centers on Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), who realizes that her previous lovers are dying and sets out to understand why this is happening. Zosia Mamet co-stars as Ruby’s best friend Aj, while other castmembers include Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez.
One surprising member of the cast is Knox, who makes an appearance in the final episode of the first season that is currently streaming. Knox became a public figure after she was convicted and then ultimately acquitted of the 2007 murder of her roommate in Italy. Co-showrunner Sally Bradford McKenna describes herself to The Hollywood Reporter as a big true-crime fan who saw Knox as the right fit for a role, given the series’ story.
“I’m obsessed with her,” Bradford McKenna says of Knox.

American audiences have not always appreciated the attempts to remake Australian comedies, but a new show featuring the Academy Award-nominated star of Everything Everywhere All at Once is currently wowing critics and viewers alike. While Australian-produced children’s entertainment icons like The Wiggles and Bluey have enjoyed considerable success in the US market, attempts to remake some of the nation’s more popular television comedies have often fallen short of expectations.
In 2008, NBC had previously attempted to remake one of Australia’s best-known sitcoms, Kath & Kim, a satirical look at an off-beat mother and daughter duo from suburbia. Starring SNL veteran Molly Shannon and Selma Blair as the remake's titular characters, the US version of Kath & Kim was lambasted by critics, with some even quipping that the show was bad enough to justify the cessation of trade relations with the country. Moreover, despite originally being picked up for a full 22-episode season,...

If you’re looking to get Laid this weekend, Peacock’s newest series has you covered.
Adapted from an Australian series by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, who previously collaborated on the far too short-lived Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23, the acerbic romantic comedy stars Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu as Ruby, a narcissistic event planner in her early 30s desperately seeking a real connection when she learns that her former lovers have all begun dying in unusual ways. This strange but shocking revelation quickly leads Ruby and her true crime-loving best friend Aj (a scene-stealing Zosia Mamet) down a twisty path as they attempt to figure out what’s going on, one that may or may not also lead Ruby on a journey of self-discovery. A quick and highly bingeable eight episodes, Laid is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

Are your former lovers dying in increasingly mysterious and confounding ways?
For Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), the lead character on the new Peacock dark comedy “Laid,” life becomes messy when her exes start dying, one-by-one. Sometimes she witnesses it in the background of a news broadcast, or sometimes it’s right in front of her own eyes. And to make matters more confusing, they start dying in the exact order she slept with them.
It’s a concept that Hsu herself describes as “redonculous,” even though it’s based on a hit Australian show that ran for two seasons.

Laid, starring Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet, is a binge-worthy comedy series about love and the struggles of modern dating. Ruby, a thirty-three-year-old woman, and a hardcore romantic, had trouble finding the man of her dreams. But Ruby did not give up. She continued to put herself through the rather grueling task of going out on dates only to be disappointed over and over again. Thankfully, her best friend Aj was there to support her at all times, and Ruby did not waste a minute of her life venting out her frustration. Ruby’s life took a strange turn when she discovered that one of her former boyfriends from college had passed away. She wanted to know what led to his demise, and even though the news was shocking, she did not feel particularly emotional about it, and perhaps attending the funeral was her way to be attuned to her feelings.

Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu), the protagonist of the Peacock comedy “Laid,” is variously described as “selfish,” “a nightmare,” “the worst person I have ever met” and belonging “in jail.” Hsu’s performance and Ruby’s characterization as a whole are indeed intensely off-putting, in ways both intentional and not. But Ruby’s karmic comeuppance in this series, adapted by sitcom veterans Nahnatchka Khan (“Fresh off the Boat”) and Sally Bradford McKenna (“The Goldbergs”) from an Australian show of the same name, doesn’t affect her directly. Instead, everyone she’s ever slept with starts to die — often in outlandish ways, always in the order she had sex with them.
This morbid premise evokes the late, great “Lovesick.” But unlike that British series, in which the hero’s Sti leads him to revisit past relationships, the heightened stakes of “Laid” present a tonal hurdle the eight-episode season proves unable to surmount.

The press materials for Peacock’s “Laid” call it “a f*cked up rom-com where the answer to, ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.'”
That dramatic irony hovers over the series, which has plenty of entertaining kernels — mysterious deaths, female friendship, and something called a “blowjob overlay” — but spends a lot of time on the uncomfortable reality of a person who is the problem and refuses to do the requisite work to get better.
“Laid” comes from co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, based on the Australian series from Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher. Ruby (Stephanie Hsu) is your average beleaguered millennial woman looking for love, except for one thing: Her exes start mysteriously dying. Along with best friend and true-crime fanatic A.J. (Zosia Mamet) — from whom she’s keeping...

Alright, so throughout the season we see how Ruby's ex-lovers keep dying one after the other in random ways. One gets sick, another's plane crashes, etc. And it's in the order Ruby has slept with them.

For viewers who tune into the new Peacock series “Laid” this weekend, don’t be surprised if you spot a familiar public figure.
Amanda Knox, the American exchange student who was convicted in Italy of murdering her roommate — before being ultimately acquitted by that country’s highest court in 2015 — makes a surprise appearance in “Laid,” as viewers will see late in the season.
In “Laid,” Aj (Zosia Mamet) is a true crime fanatic who helps her best friend, Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), figure out why all of her ex’s are dying in the exact pattern she slept with them. Aj is obsessed with Knox throughout the show and, by the end, the real-life Knox makes a cameo appearance.
This reps Knox’s first appearance in a fictional television series. Years after her case and eventual acquittal rocked Italy — and became huge headlines even here in the U.S. — Knox continues...

“My vagina is killing people.”
As pithy summations for TV series go, that line from the new Peacock comedy Laid is pretty tough to beat. The series, created by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, and starring Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet, has a particularly high-concept premise: Ruby (Hsu), who has compiled a long and messy sexual history without ever finding a relationship that works, discovers that everyone she has ever slept with is dying. Because it’s happening to these men and women in the order in which they had sex with Ruby,...
