It’s been a long wait for NBC’s Chicago Med to return with its 9th Season but with the premiere less than a week away (January 17), Deadline has some juicy nuggets to tease about the show’s return.

Dayton’s live surgery for investors cost him nearly all his money after showing the high-tech machine wasn’t ready for showtime. So to stay afloat financially, Dayton sells the hospital.

Nick Gehlfuss' departure from Chicago Med was a significant change in the character dynamics, as his role as Dr. Halstead was deeply embedded in the show's ensemble. Gehlfuss left the show for creative reasons, feeling that he had taken the character of Dr. Halstead as far as possible and wanting to explore other acting opportunities. While Gehlfuss has not been involved in any major released projects since his departure, he has expressed openness to returning to Chicago Med for important moments and when it makes sense for his character.

Cast changes in the One Chicago universe occur for varied reasons, including creative decisions, off-screen conflicts, and actors seeking new opportunities. Departures of beloved characters like Dr. Will Halstead, Detective Jay Halstead, and Captain Matthew Casey create room for new storylines to unfold and keep the drama and entertainment alive. Some cast departures, like Jesse Spencer as Captain Casey and Torrey DeVitto as Natalie Manning, allowed for brief returns, showing that the door remains open for beloved characters to reappear.
While numerous actors have left the One Chicago universe over the years, the reasons for their departures are varied. Portraying the firefighters, police officers, doctors, and other civic servants central to each series requires a sizable rotating cast. However, over a decade-plus of life-and-death small screen drama, cast changes have inevitably occurred. Whether planned by producers to drive plot, requested by actors to pursue new creative avenues, or resulting from on or off-screen conflict,...

Change is coming to the One Chicago shows. Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med will all return in 2024 with new episodes. But fans will have to brace themselves for the departure of some much-loved characters in the upcoming seasons, as well as the introduction of at least one new face.
Kara Killmer leaving ‘Chicago Fire,’ Tracy Spiridakos out at ‘Chicago P.D.’
The most recent seasons of the One Chicago shows were marked by some high-profile cast member exits. Chicago P.D. Season 10 was Jay Halstead actor Jesse Lee Soffer’s last with the Dick Wolf drama. Chicago Fire Season 11 saw Taylor Kinney make a sudden (albeit temporary) exit due to a personal matter. And Chicago Med experienced some major changes in season 8, with Brian Tee (Dr. Ethan Choi), Nick Gehlfuss (Will Halstead), Guy Lockard (Dr. Dylan Scott), and Sarah Rafferty (Dr. Pamela Blake) all moving on from Gaffney Chicago Medical Center.

More often than not, Dick Wolf franchises feel untouchable.
Depending on how well actor negotiations have gone regarding artificial intelligence, it wouldn't be entirely unsurprising if, 20 years from now, we still have an AI-generated rendition of Olivia Benson protecting and advocating for abuse survivors on Law Order: Svu.
There's longevity in the Dick Wolf series, whether it's the Law & Order franchise or One Chicago. And by now, viewers have grown accustomed to a revolving door of beloved characters and actors over the years to sustain the series.
But is there a breaking point to that? Will there ever be a point, at least for the One Chicago series, where too many casting changes and a different formula for screentime for budgetary purposes reach a point of no return?

The Law & Order and One Chicago shows, created by Dick Wolf, will finally be returning after delays due to Hollywood strikes. NBC has announced the premiere dates for Law & Order season 23, Law & Order: Svu season 25, Law & Order: Organized Crime season 4, Chicago Med season 9, Chicago Fire season 12, and Chicago P.D. season 11. The One Chicago shows will premiere on January 17, 2024, followed by the Law & Order shows on January 18, 2024.
The return dates have been set for the Law & Order and One Chicago franchises. Both interconnected universes of shows had their returns delayed during the dual Hollywood strikes while writers and then actors fought for fair pay. While Law & Order focuses on "ripped-from-the-headlines" cases on different themes, including organized crime and sex-related crimes, One Chicago focuses on different public services in Chicago, including the fire department and the police department.

Chicago Med season 9 will be starting up again on November 27, bringing excitement for the cast and crew who can now resume working. The new season will feature cast changes, with notable exits from characters like Dr. Will Halstead and Dr. Ethan Choi. There will also be shifts behind the scenes, as co-creator Derek Haas steps away from his role as executive producer, and a new character with a troubled past is introduced.
Chicago Med season 9 gets a major update from Jessy Schram, who plays Dr. Hannah Asher. With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes both over, broadcast shows have been among the first Hollywood productions to ramp back up to make the most out of what remains from the usual TV season. Although it's expected to have fewer episodes than normal due to the fallout from the strikes, there will be a lot of new developments for NBC's long-running medical drama.

Chicago Fire will say goodbye to Kara Killmer during the NBC show’s twelfth season, Deadline has confirmed. It is as yet unknown how many episodes her character Sylvie Brett will appear in.
Killmer joined the popular procedural during its third season with Sylvie serving as a central character throughout. Jesse Spencer, who played her love interest Matt Casey, departed from the show in 2021 but has returned as a guest star.
In the Season 11 finale, Matt proposed to Sylvie and at the time we guessed it could mean Spencer could return to the show. Instead, it appears the relationship could end in marriage with the pair riding off into the sunset together. The idea is certainly on trend as this was how Brian Tee and Yaya Dacosta departed Chicago Med as well as Nick Gehlfuss and Torrey DeVitto on the same series.
What could that mean for Chicago P.D.

There's never a dull moment on Chicago Med, but the NBC drama will open its doors to someone with ties to one of the show's longest-serving cast members.
TVLine reports that the series is eyeing "an early thirtysomething male Emergency Department doctor."
The mystery individual will have a connection with Dr. Charles (played by Oliver Platt).
Initially, the new character will be a recurring player, but as we've seen in the past, people tend to get upgraded to series regular status if they resonate with viewers.
The unnamed new addition "comes from a troubled background, which led him to cross paths with Dr. Charles when he was growing up."
Like other long-running series, Chicago Med has lost its fair share of cast members throughout the years, but Chicago Med Season 8 wrote out many ongoing cast members.

Gaffney Chicago Medical Center is adding a new male Ed doctor for Chicago Med season 9 who will have a history with Dr. Charles. The departures of several characters in the previous season necessitate the introduction of new series regulars for Chicago Med season 9. While initially a recurring role, the new doctor's connection to Dr. Charles adds depth to the storytelling and could impact future seasons.
Gaffney Chicago Medical Center is looking to add another doctor as Chicago Med season 9 is supposedly casting a new character. The historic dual strikes of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the SAG-AFTRA have significantly delayed the start of the 2023-2024 TV season. Chicago Med is staffing back up, adding a new doc for the upcoming ninth season — and he’s already got a history with one of the hospital’s finest.
Casting is underway for an early thirtysomething male Emergency Department doctor who has a past connection to Dr. Charles (played by Oliver Platt), TVLine has learned exclusively. The new character — who is set to recur on the NBC drama, with the potential for a series-regular upgrade in Season 10 — comes from a troubled background, which led him to cross paths with Dr. Charles when he was growing up.

Taylor Kinney may return in ‘Chicago Fire’ Season 12

The next week, the show explained that Severide was participating in an arson training program in Alabama. Later in the season, his wife Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) learned that he was no longer in the training program and was instead taking part in an Atf investigation at an unnamed location.
