Beau should not sleep. Earlier in the day, when he tried to leave his apartment to see his mother, Beau left his door open with the keys still in the lock. When he returned to the door after turning back to retrieve a forgotten item, his keys were gone.
Worse, when Beau asks a man in the hallway about the missing keys, the passerby shouts, “You’re fucked, pal!”
Yes, the above scene does occur in Beau is Afraid, last year’s weirdo epic starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular disturbed man. But before he made Beau is Afraid as his third feature film, director Ari Aster introduced Billy Mayo as the fearful lead of his short movie, “Beau.”

Monaco joins CAA from A3 Artists Agency, where she spent five years as a talent agent in its theatrical division. The agency ceased operations in February. To surprise of basically no one, Robert Downey Jr. has just won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as Lewis Strauss in "Oppenheimer." The movie was one of the biggest hits of 2023, both critically and financially, and Downey was a huge part of it. He brought the scheming, insecure Strauss to life on the big screen, and helped take a storyline that could've felt like a bunch of complicated legal clutter and turn it into an emotional, high-stakes battle of wills.
Downey's win is heartwarming for a whole host of reasons. One is the actor's well-known struggles with addiction in the late '90s and early 2000s, and the other is Downey Jr.'s long history of starring in exciting, varied, interesting films. From "Tropic Thunder" to "Zodiac" to his many appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this man has definitely put in the work to reach this career milestone.

Vera Drew is cementing her status as “The People’s Joker.”
The former “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” editor directed, co-wrote, edited, and stars in the superhero-parody film that made waves at TIFF 2022 (where IndieWire saw it) before being acquired by Los Angeles-based distributor Altered Innocence in December 2023. Now, thanks in part to social media hashtag-campaign #FreethePeoplesJoker, “The People’s Joker” is indeed free for a North-American theatrical release.
Drew portrays the title character in the queer coming-of-age origin story that reimagines “Batman” villain The Joker as a trans comedian. Joker the Harlequin (Drew) grapples with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s Ucb (United Clown Bureau) Live, the one government-sanctioned late-night sketch show that is the only platform for rising comedians since Gotham City otherwise outlawed comedy. (Get it? Ucb like Upright Citizens Brigade?)

Typically, saying you're more excited about something other than the new Lady Gaga project is fair grounds for having your queer card taken away, but an exception can be made in the case of "The People's Joker." Indeed, as intrigued as I am to watch Gaga's Harley Quinn sing and dance her way through a toxic romance with Joaquin Phoenix's Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" (a sentence I couldn't have imagined writing after watching Phillips' original Scorsesean DC drama for the first time back in 2019), it's Vera Drew's trans-coming-of-age DC Comics superhero parody that has my current attention.
Drew, similar to her fellow trans comedienne Harper Steele (the subject of Will Ferrell's acclaimed upcoming Netflix documentary "Will & Harper"), has quietly worked on some of the more memorable and daring comedic offerings of the past decade. In addition to editing Scott Aukerman...

Carol Burnett’s 90 Years of Laughter and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie were the big winners on night 2 of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday, while Queer Eye — already sick with Emmys — took home yet another for Outstanding Structured Reality Show. So did RuPaul (for hosting Drag Race) and The Simpsons (Animated Series), naturally.
Burnett’s sentimental trip down memory lane won Variety Special (pre-recorded), while Still won for Outstanding Documentary and Director (Davis Guggenheim).
“This is very encouraging,” Burnett said from the stage, before telling everyone to drive home safely.
Barack Obama, who was sadly Ma from the awards show in downtown L.A.’s Peacock Theater, picked up a trophy for narrating Working: What We Do All Day, while Welcome to Wrexham racked up wins for Unstructured Reality Show, Editing and Cinematography.

After winning the award for Outstanding Actor In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series at yesterday’s event, the second time that he has won that award, he has now won the award for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama Or Variety Series.
It was somewhat of a surprise given that James Corden’s Apple series Carpool Karaoke, which has won the award for two years in a row, was also nominated, coming off the back of ending his stint on The Late Late Show, the series responsible for originating the musical car ride.
Robinson also beat out Awkwafina Is Hangin’ With Grandma, Better Call Saul: Filmmaker Training and Only Murders In The Building: One Killer Question.

You guys, we did it. It’s the end of the year, and if you’re reading this right now, it means you still have an appetite for television. And not just any television, mind you, but the best new TV shows on the market. After the year we’ve had, that’s an accomplishment. It means you made it through “Ahsoka” and “Secret Invasion,” “Citadel” and “The Continental.” Heck, you survived “The Idol,” — aka the greatest threat to HBO’s sterling reputation since David Zaslav — and you still want to watch Hollywood’s attempts at serialized TV. I salute you.
Try not to read too much into the fact that none of the aforementioned titles were Netflix originals. The de facto winner of the streaming wars still had a pretty rough year when it came to creating quality TV — or, to use the company’s preferred analogy, its “gourmet cheeseburgers” were pretty damn dry.

It feels like Tim Robinson sprung to fame overnight with his sketch series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson. The program showcases Robinson's unique brand of humor, which is a reinvigorating fragrance of a rarely touched style of comedy. Absurdism has been around for some time in movies and television, with some of the more mainstream influences being Tim and Eric: Awesome Show, Great Job! And comedians-turned-actors like Zach Galifianakis. As popular as they are, it's not often given an outlet aside from network blocks like Adult Swim or studios like Funny or Die. Even then, it's just as rare that the shows that clear the networks actually lean into the more pure end of absurdism. It's equally refreshing when a new generation of creators within the genre receives the green light in the present day, which brings us to Tim Robinson. While the Second City alum's fame is still relatively new,...

Some innovators try to devise a gadget that changes the world. Others hope to solve a global social ill. Sarah Sherman is eager to bring fake vomit on “Saturday Night Live” into the modern age.
The comic has gained notice on the long-running NBC late-night series for bizarre humor that blends gross-out jokes with a taste for the absurd. She’s been working with colleagues for months on new technology that would make the act of pretending to throw up onstage a lot easier — and more comfortable. For years, “SNL” cast members have relied on a tube tucked alongside their arm and usually inside a jacket sleeve that spews out liquid approximating vomit or blood. Ridley Scott’s epic Napoleon hits theaters Nov. 22, but the review embargo for the film broke Tuesday night, and the early reaction from critics has been largely positive.
Written by David Scarpa, the lavish period film, which clocks in at a meaty two hours and 38 minutes, stars Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the French military commander and later despot Napoleon Bonaparte, with Vanessa Kirby as his consort, Empress Joséphine. The movie charts Bonaparte’s meteoric rise from lowly artillery commander to Napoleon I, emperor of France, and takes in notable military engagements such as the battles of Austerlitz and Waterloo.
Among the early reviews, Napoleon has been praised for its epic scale, particularly the set-piece battle scenes that make the film a worthy theatrical experience. Critics also praised Scott for his ambition in telling Bonaparte’s disparate story. There was praise, too, for Phoenix and Kirby’s performances. Some critics...

Kirkman shares his thoughts on the current state of the superhero genre, acknowledging the challenge of maintaining a sense of newness after numerous superhero movies.
Invincible will finally return with its long-awaited second season on November 3, but its creator Robert Kirkman is already thinking about the third installment of the acclaimed animated series, teasing many surprises for the future. Released in 2021, the first season of the show was a smash hit, which was not a surprise for the streaming platform, considering what they had achieved with The Boys, which also presents a very different story within the superhero genre. As a true Detroiter, actor-comedian Tim Robinson could be considered to be a Coney Dog connoisseur. He’s so dialed into the hot dog lifestyle that he partnered with Plant Power Fast Food to create a Detroit-style vegan Coney Dog.
“On October 21, the plant-based restaurant chain will introduce a vegan take on the Michigan cult favorite, the Coney hotdog. This limited offer will be available for $7.95 at Plant Power’s Hollywood location through November 2023 while supplies last,” according to a release.
All profits from the sales of the Coney and the exclusive merchandise will support the non-profit, Youth Climate Save, led by Genesis Butler.
“Teaming up with Tim to put a vegan twist on one of his home state dishes has been exciting for us,” Zach Vouga, founder of Plant Power Fast Food said. “Being able to channel our combined passions into supporting the incredible work of activist Genesis Butler...

Morale following the breakdown of the negotiations between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and SAG-AFTRA on Wednesday evening seemed depleted as actors and supporters walked back and forth in front of Hollywood studios, carrying “SAG-AFTRA on Strike!” signs that have been omnipresent at company entrances over the past three months.
Outside of Netflix in Hollywood, there was a lively, crowded atmosphere with DJ Evan Shafran spinning tunes, while multiple members of the negotiating committee were present. Duncan-Crabtree-Ireland gave a short speech, while “one day longer/one day stronger” chants rang through the air.
Presence at studios like Amazon, Sony, Disney (which hosted a pumpkin carving and bracelet-making station) and Warner Bros., however, seemed more muted than on many other days: no bulging crowds spilling into the streets, and fewer food and coffee trucks than before. It was comedy day on the Warner Bros. picket line. There were...

There were more than a gaggle of memorable episodes in season two of Adult Swim’s hit animated comedy, Teenage Euthanasia. Ann Dowd flipped her Aunt Lydia character from The Handmaid's Tale to voice the sex-positive matriarch of Erica’s Erotic Emporium. And Kieran Culkin (Succession) voiced a memorable billionaire named Ref Mazos. All of it fed into the show’s outlandish premise.
Set in inland Florida in a “mildly apocalyptic near future," the series from creators Alissa Nutting and Alyson Levy revolves around the misadventures of the Fantasy family and their funeral home, Tender Endings. Lending their voices to the Fantasy family are the great Maria Bamford (Lady Dynamite), Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers), Jo Firestone (Joe Pera Talks With You), and Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson). Season two stood out for many reasons, especially its guest stars.
