Asher Angel‘s career is quickly on the rise. The Jewish actor has been working in Tinseltown since the age of five. However, Angel’s career seems to be finally steering in a strong direction thanks to his time in his biggest role to date: Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Like most actors in Hollywood, the young star had to scratch and claw his way up through the system in order to get a decent opportunity. Though it seems as if his time as Billy Batson has come to an end (unless James Gunn announces a sequel to Shazam! Fury...

Wildfires are a far too common occurrence, destroying property and taking lives in the U.S. and abroad, and Peter Facinelli hopes his latest film On Fire will put a more personal spin on the disasters so viewers start thinking about how they could be mitigated.
“It’s meant to be a white knuckling kind of ride that gives you hope and, in the end, also celebrates the heroes that are putting their lives on the line all the time,” Facinelli tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that he hopes the film raises awareness about the increasing frequency of deadly wildfires, like the one that devastated Lahaina in August. “October is Fire Prevention Month, and there are ways to protect your home, but these fires just keep happening and it’s time to think about what we could do about it.”

A really wet Friday in New York – National Weather Service flash flood warning wet – is likely to take a bite out of specialty film in one of its biggest markets this weekend. Alamo Drafthouse shut its NYC locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island until further notice due to “severe flooding in and around the area,” saying “Please everyone stay dry & stay safe, and we hope to have you back at the movies very soon.” Subways are jammed up and the water makes it hard to get around.

In November 2018, the seventh deadliest wildfire in US history ripped through California and destroyed the entire town of Paradise, along with numerous other homes. A combination of wind changes and unexpected behaviour on the part of the fire meant that evacuations happened only at the last minute and many people who had thought themselves safe abruptly faced danger. Given the location of this event, it embedded itself deep in the psyche of many in he state’s filmmaking community. Five years later, Peter Facinelli and Nick Lyon’s film attempts to capture something of the experience of those directly involved.
Facinelli plays Dave, a construction company owner who lives in a comfortable woodland trailer home with his father George (Lance Henriksen), teenage son Clay (Asher Angel) and wife Sarah (Fiona Dourif), who is eight months pregnant. "This is no joke..." "Best thing to do is fireproof the house." But that won't work either, of course! Cineverse has revealed an official trailer for a survival thriller titled On Fire, arriving in theaters to watch at the end of September. The film initially premiered at the 2023 Mammoth Film Festival earlier this year, and it's co-directed by Nick Lyon with the actor / director Peter Facinelli. This is a chilling premise because it's actually happening in real life to so many people - from Hawaii and Greece, and many many other places around the world. And yes it's due to climate change and negligence, and we need to do more. Based on real events, On Fire follows a family who lives in a trailer home in the woods when they are suddenly confronted by a wildfire. Survival becomes their main objective. With precious moments ticking by, Dave must flee with...

Zachary Levi returns for a sequel to DC’s 2019 superhero hit, alongside returning director David F. Sandberg. As such, the follow-up doesn’t quite hit the heights of the first film, but there’s a decent amount of fun to be had along the way.
The plot picks up two years after the events of the previous film, with Billy Batson (Asher Angel / Levi) and his Shazam Family of teens-who-turn-into-adult-superheroes established as a team of costumed crimefighters in their city, even if they occasionally screw up, earning them the label “the Philadelphia Fiascos”. However, when the vengeful Daughters of Atlas (Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu) show up,...

The thunder is hitting HBO Max.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is arriving on the streamer, which will soon be renamed to Max, on May 23. Although the DC Comics adaptation opened at No. 1 at the box office, it flew in lower than its predecessor, barely cracking a $30 million debut.
Starring Zachary Levi, the film sees Billy Batson (Levi and Asher Angel) and his foster siblings using their transformative powers to take on the Daughters of Atlas, who threaten to destroy the world. Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren round out the film’s cast, while David F. Sandberg returns as director.
In addition to a disappointing debut (particularly notable considering its hefty $125 million production budget), critical responses are also a step down from the praise that met the original.

It seems like only yesterday that Lucy Liu was landing on a Philadelphia baseball field on dragon-back to cause chaos, yet tomorrow "Shazam! Shazam star Zachary Levi is seemingly carrying the torch for comedy in superhero movies. Most of the ongoing DC slate has some element of comedy, from The Suicide Squad to the lighthearted tone of The Flash. But with Marvel’s Ant-Man going for a more serious science fiction tone, Levi’s character is starting to look a little lonely.
That might be why the Chuck actor is trying to re-enlist a former DC actor for the new wave of films under director James Gunn. He thinks Ryan Reynolds should come back to the DC universe, playing the very character that got him ousted in the first place.

It's worth noting right away that there will likely be no "Shazam! 3." Not only has "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" been welcomed by unimpressive box office numbers, but James Gunn and Peter Safran, who were recently put in charge of all the movies and TV shows based on DC Comics, appear to be planning to wipe the slate clean. A few more films in the superhero continuity that began with "Man of Steel" in 2013 will play in theaters before this year is over, but there will likely be no follow-ups to them. Additionally, many of the current DC TV shows like "Doom Patrol" and "Titans" will also be taken off the roster. Gunn and Safran's mandate begins with cleanliness.
Speculating about what might go into a third "Shazam!" film will have to remain 100% academic. There is very little reason to believe that such a film will ever be made, or...

Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan clearly like working together. The day before Shazam! Fury of the Gods hit theaters, the co-writers couldn’t say enough good things about each other, tossing questions and praise back and forth on a mid-morning Zoom call with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m a huge fan of Henry’s writing,” said Morgan, who’s known for his work as a screenwriter on The Fast and the Furious franchise, about hopping onto the Shazam! sequel with Gayden. “He has this kind of a superpower of being able to tap into a teen voice that I just have no access to…I just kind of am in awe of that.”
Gayden felt just as strongly about Morgan, and even wrote a Fast and Furious joke into into the script as a tribute.

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, the duo didn’t mince words: this was a brand “in chaos.” Their mandate: as Safran explained in late January, “to build an extraordinary standalone studio with the best IP and stories in the world.” But while the pair have already laid out their plans to do just that over the coming years, they also arrived in their new gig with existing material — including five films, all part of that “chaos” — that was primed, ready to go, and dated.
One of those films: David F. Sandberg’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which opened last week to a limp $30 million opening weekend. As IndieWire’s own Tom Brueggemann noted in his weekly box office wrap, that’s more than 40 percent down from the initial DC Comics film in 2019 (with ticket prices at least 15 percent lower). In the super-sequel “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” mild-mannered teen Billy Batson learns the importance of togetherness as he and his team of hero pals save Philadelphia from a triumvirate of titanettes. Paired for the first time, screenwriters Chris Morgan and Henry Gayden got their own lesson in the fine art of teamwork as they joined forces for a lighter spin on the capes-and-tights picture.

The superhero Shazam, formerly known by his beloved golden age name, Captain Marvel, became a fan favorite among readers right from the 40s, partially due to the charm the character brought and partially due to his unique origin. Although creators C.C. Beck and Bill Parker conceptualized the World’s Mightiest Mortal in 1940 with the recently debuted Man of Steel in mind, the departure from conventional superhero origins by making a teenager magically transformed into the all-powerful hero added distinctiveness. Later, as Captain Marvel, aka young Billy Batson, merrily shared his powers among hapless souls, the innovativeness kept adding on. Freddy Freeman and Mary Bromfield were the two major characters with whom the Captain shared his powers. The trio was known as Marvel Family and had their own titles, which became immensely popular.

DC and New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a superhero pic scorned.
The movie opened to a dismal $30.5 million domestically from 4,071 theaters, well behind the $53.5 million domestic opening of the first Shazam! in 2019, not adjusted for inflation.
That’s one of the worst starts for a major Hollywood superhero film, as well as one of the worst for a title in the DC Cinematic Universe, including those released during the pandemic. Fury of the Gods cost at least $110 million to produce before marketing.
The news was just as bad overseas, where Fury of the Gods opened to just $35 million from 78 markets — including bombing in China with $4.4 million — for a worldwide start of $65.5 million.
In North America, prerelease tracking had suggested Shazam! Fury of the Gods would open to at least $35 million this weekend. Others believed it had a shot at $40 million.

This post contains spoilers for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods."
There's no denying that Dame Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu make for better supervillains than a talking worm, but the fact remains: the first "Shazam" movie promised us Mister Mind. Or did it? If you sat through to the end of the sequel "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" this weekend, you may have been overcome by a sense of deja vu as the post-credits scene checked back in with Mark Strong's Dr. Sivana in his jail cell, where Mister Mind showed back up on the window ledge, talking up all his big plans, just as he did at the end of "Shazam."
Taken as tongue-in-cheek in a self-aware, "Deadpool"-lite sort of way, the "Fury of the Gods" post-credits scene lands like a tacit acknowledgment that the whole Mister Mind thing isn't going anywhere and that he probably wouldn't have been the best villain,...

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is thundering to a No. 1 opening at the box office, though the DC Comics adaptation is expected to fly in lower than its predecessor.
“Fury of the Gods” grossed $11.7 million in opening day ticket sales, a figure that includes $3.4 million in Thursday previews. That’s almost half of the $20.3 million that the 2019 original earned in its first day of release, on its way to a $53 million bow. “Fury of the Gods” carries a production budget of $125 million, which is $25 million higher than its predecessor’s.
Opening in 4,071 theaters, the superhero sequel will likely struggle to reach a $30 million debut. With DC Studios under the newly minted leadership of Peter Safran and James Gunn, “Shazam! 2” represents somewhat of a relic of a bygone regime for the comic book banner. While a film like “The Flash” was also conceived before Safran and Gunn’s tenure, the pair...

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” the sequel to the better-than-it-had-any-right-to-be “Shazam!” (from 2019) is here. It once again stars Zachary Levi as the adult superhero version of pint-sized Billy Batson (Asher Angel), whose powers were bestowed upon him by a dying wizard.. This time around, Shazam and his super-powered family are going up against villainous gods played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Lui and Rachel Zegler, in her first big movie role since “West Side Story.”
But Shazam is also facing something far more challenging than wooden dragons and wrathful gods – he’s staring down the barrel of an uncertain future for DC-related properties. Amidst a failed spinoff, a highly publicized regime change at Warner Bros. Discovery and a nearly complete reset of everything that has come before it in the DC Universe, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” sits precipitously on the edge of a very deep ravine.

If that final end-credits scene of Shazam! Fury of the Gods looked familiar, it was supposed to.
After a long battle against the daughters of Atlas — Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Anthea (Rachel Zegler)— the DC sequel ends with Billy Batson (Asher Angel/Zachary Levi) and the Shazam! family safely back together, rebuilding their home after it was destroyed in the final fight. They all have their powers restored, and Billy finally learns his true superhero name — it’s Shazam, obviously. And once credits roll on what is potentially Levi’s last outing as the superhero, there are two end-credits sequences.
The final end-credits scene calls back to the post-credit promises of the first film, which featured Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong) conspiring for revenge in his jail cell with an unlikely visitor — Mister Mind, a supervillain worm with a robotic voice who’s a major Shazam!

[Editor’s note: Spoilers ahead for both “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and its post-credits scenes.]
Well, here’s a pickle. Generally, when we write about the post-credits scenes that wind down big blockbusters, the intention is to a) explain them in their current context and b) posit how they might impact their franchises going forward. Typically, that’s an easy enough ask, but given the current state of the DC Universe, attempting to explain how the pair of post-credits scenes in David F. Sandberg’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” fits into a cinematic universe that may no longer include the warm-hearted teen superhero and his powered-up family feels mighty complicated.
Before James Gunn and Peter Safran officially relaunch the DC Universe with the 2025 release of Gunn’s own “Superman: Legacy,” a handful of DC films are still primed for release. Those films, including “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” were designed as part of previous franchise...

Despite the fun and comradery present in 2019’s Shazam!, that film’s sequel – Shazam! Fury of the Gods – unfortunately takes the property down the too often travelled road of over-dramatized and overblown entries that populate the DC Extended Cinematic Universe (Dcecu).
This new entry continues the story of Billy Batson (Asher Angel) – a teenager who can transform himself into a superhero almost as powerful as Superman by speaking the word “Shazam!” – and his extended foster-family of fellow superheroes as they do battle with the now resurrected Greek gods Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and Anthea (Rachel Zegler) who are determined to reclaim the powers of the gods for themselves.
Returning director David F. Sandberg and screenwriter Henry Gayden are joined by Chris Morgan who serves as an additional screenwriter apparently added to ensure that the film gets the Dcecu treatment and becomes an unwieldy and overwrought narrative that loses...

Despite Zachary Levi, Rachel Zegler, and Lucy Liu cementing themselves in the DC universe via the new "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" movie, the three disagree on who makes the best Batman. A whopping seven actors have slipped into the Dark Knight's cape on the silver screen, but the fellow DC actors's all named different favourites - with Levi even admitting he hasn't seen the most recent iteration. "I haven't seen 'The Batman.' I know, I know," he divulged to Popsugar as he saw a look of disapproval.

Warner Bros./New Line/DC’s “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” is expected to make substantially less at the box office than its 2019 predecessor, and that is playing out with Thursday previews as the sequel made $3.4 million from more than 3,400 theaters.
Four years ago, “Shazam!” earned $6 million from Thursday previews en route to a $53.5 million opening weekend, beating projections of a $45 million launch. Heading into this weekend, “Shazam 2” projections have stayed at $35 to 38 million.
While there is still a possibility that this $100 million superhero film could still pass the break-even point from such an opening weekend, the film would have to gather considerable word-of-mouth in the coming weeks to do so, particularly among families looking for a day at the movies as schools have spring break on a rolling basis through late March and early April.

The “Fury of the Gods” may not be all that furious. Warner Bros. and DC’s “Shazam” sequel took flight with $3.4 million in Thursday previews at the domestic box office, behind the original movie’s preview haul in 2019.
The sequel to Zachary Levi’s superhero movie will land with a smaller opening than its predecessor. The first “Shazam” movie had $5.9 million in Thursday previews before opening with $53.5 million in April 2019. It went on to gross $140 million domestically and $366 million globally.
However, “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” is only expected to bring in $35 million to $40 million. Each of the “Shazam” movies cost $100 million to produce, but that’s a significant drop from the original.

Prerelease tracking suggests the superhero sequel will open to $35 million this weekend, one of the lower starts for a Hollywood superhero pic. Others believe it has a shot at $40 million, although that would still be behind the $53.5 million domestic opening of the first Shazam! in 2019, including $5.9 million in previews. not adjusted for inflation.
Shazam 2‘s Rotten Tomatoes critics score is a ho-hum 55 percent. That compares to 90 percent for the 2019 movie.
Families — which played a key role in the first movie’s surprise success — remain a challenged moviegoing demo in the pandemic era.
One advantage: the pic is playing in Imax and other premium-format theaters, which carry an upcharge.

The following article contains spoilers for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods."
"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is in theaters now, and if you've seen it, you know how much it relies on characters and creatures from Greek mythology. Of course, there have been some changes, but from the Daughters of Atlas to Ladon the dragon to manticores, harpies, minotaurs, cyclops, and unicorns, there is a lot of fun lore in here.
In the film, the Daughters of Atlas have come from the Realm of the Gods to find a dangerous artifact — a golden apple from the tree in the Garden of the Hesperides — which could destroy our world. The Shazamily, led by Billy Batson (Asher Angel), aka Shazam (Zachary Levi), have to take them down before they wreck the realm with beings only spoken of in stories and lore. Shazam, the character, is already connected to Greek myth, of course,...

This post contains spoilers for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods."
"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" has finally hit theaters after a long wait. The first film came out in 2019, and with pandemic delays, it's been far too long since we saw our favorite kids in adult superhero bodies. This time around, Billy Batson (Asher Angel), aka Shazam (Zachary Levi), and the rest of the Shazamily are working heroes who also have to deal with school, their foster family, and the bad press they're getting, despite saving the world over and over again.
In the tradition of the first film, there's also a great DC cameo on display here. I hope it wasn't spoiled for you, but even if it was, that doesn't take away from how much fun it was, from the first fake-out to the final payoff.
I recently sat down with director David F. Sandberg and asked about that cameo.
