Apple TV’s newest mystery thriller series, “The Last Thing He Told Me,” premiered its third episode today, and Olivia Newman’s show is starting to put a little more effort into ensuring audience retention. However, unless the show manages to maintain the pace or doesn’t speed up things, it’ll lose out on viewership soon enough. In the last episode, Jennifer Garner’s character Hannah Hall took her stepdaughter Bailey to Austin, Texas, to search for more details regarding Hannah’s husband and Bailey’s dad, Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster Waldau), after he went missing. Now, as the two women go from place to place looking for clues that’ll help explain the situation they find themselves in, a call from the lawyer/ ex-boyfriend of Hannah, Jake Davies, reveals something rather shocking. Here’s everything that happens in the latest episode of Apple TV’s “The Last Thing He Told Me....

Warning: Major spoilers for Sherwood episodes 1 to 6.
Like The Responder before it, Sherwood is a gripping BBC crime drama about much more than manhunts and police barrier tape. Loosely inspired by real events, it’s the story of two murders in a Nottinghamshire ex-mining town that reopen old wounds in a fractured community where conflict was manipulated by political policing during the 1984-1985 miners’ strike.
With an unimprovable cast including Lesley Manville, Alun Armstrong, David Morrissey and countless other talents, Sherwood hits all the marks of a whodunit thriller with characters that examine the nature of division and decades-old rifts. Its first series begins in grief and ends with an exhortation for communities not to allow their differences to be exploited by others for political gain.
A clear contender for British TV drama of the year, let’s dive into how Sherwood’s moving, revelatory ending unfurled. Spoilers ahead.

Mark Rylance as Maurice Flitcroft in The Phantom Of The Open. Photo credit Nick Wall. Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics.
In the charming true-story comedy Phantom Of The Open, Mark Rylance plays the worst golfer in British Open history, Maurice Flitcroft, a middle-aged working class bloke who accidentally got into the storied competition, and then became a folk hero for trying to do it again and again, haunting the tournament. Mark Rylance (Bridge Of Spies) and Sally Hawkins (The Shape Of Water), as Flitcroft’s supportive wife Jean, are both absolute charmers in this very funny yet uplifting British comedy about a very British eccentric who believed anything was possible. Although Flitcroft’s performance in the British Open earned him the moniker “worst golfer in the world,” it actually was the first round of golf Flitcroft had ever played, having just taken up the sport after being laid off from...

Every once in a while, a film comes along that simply makes you feel good. It may not be a superlative piece of cinema, nor may it feature virtuoso performances from all involved, but it has something that well, just works and it makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable. The Phantom of the Open is precisely such a film. It is an engaging and heart-warming piece of entertainment that shines its beacon of hope over its entire running time.
The film tells the stirring true tale of one Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance), a crane operator in Barrow-in-Furness who, in 1976, through a series of befuddling events, earned a place in the qualifying round of the British Open Golf Championship, even though he had never actually played the game before. Consequently, he produced the worst round in the history of the Open, incurring the wrath of the golfing establishment, while...

At what point does self-awareness turn inside out, to become the very thing it’s observing? “The Phantom of the Open” tries so hard to be a winking commentary on British heartwarmers about lovable outsiders. And its efforts are, as often as not, entertaining. But after a while, it becomes clear that what it wants more than anything is to be embraced as a crowd-pleasing comedy itself.
After noting that his film is based on a true story, director Craig Roberts begins at the end, with an aged Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance) reminiscing about his rather extraordinary golfing career. Why was it so extraordinary? Because, we learn in flashback, it was the epitome of ordinary.
Back in 1976, Flitcroft is just an unassuming shipyard worker, raising three unassuming boys with his unassuming wife Jean (Sally Hawkins). His teen twins (Jonah and Christian Lees) want to be disco dancers, and his older...

"I just need to practice... Practice is the road to perfection." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed an official US trailer for The Phantom of the Open, a true story sports comedy directed by British actor / filmmaker Craig Roberts (also of Just Jim and Eternal Beauty previously). Opening in theaters starting this June in the US. The film tells a true story golfer Maurice Flitcroft, whose performance at the 1976 British Open Golf Championship made him a legend. He was a simple crane operator who managed to gain entry to the 1976 British Open, despite never playing a round of golf before. Mark Rylance stars as Maurice, joined by Sally Hawkins as his wife Jean, and Rhys Ifans as his nemesis Mackenzie; plus a cast including Mark Lewis Jones, Johann Myers, Jake Davies, and Barry Aird. This earned some rave reviews out of the 2021 London Film Festival where it premiered last year. It...

If Maurice Flitcroft hadn’t really existed, a British comedy would surely have invented him. A humble shipyard worker from Barrow-in-Furness who decided, on a rogue middle-aged whim, to enter the British Open despite never having played a round of golf in his life, he was practically a living, breathing Ealing Studios hero. That he managed to repeat the feat multiple times in multiple disguises over the years, earning himself the title of “the world’s worst professional golfer,” tips a real life into the realm of absurdity.
It’s tempting to say, then, that anyone taking on a Flitcroft biopic has a large part of the work done for them. The jokes write themselves, though in “The Phantom of the Open,” screenwriter Simon Farnaby and director Craig Roberts make them sweeter and spryer than they could have been, while a wide-eyed, bucket-hatted Mark Rylance plays Flitcroft with abundant generosity of spirit.

Netflix’s Emmy-winning “Black Mirror” has been thoughtfully doling out details of its highly anticipated fourth season throughout the past couple week, and the show finally revealed a full trailer. In addition, viewers finally when their misery will end (or begin, depending on just how bleak the installments are), as the streaming service also revealed the release date, Friday, Dec. 29.

The trailer, which can be seen below, ranges from futuristic sets with robots and spaceships to more mundane settings. According to EW, at an early PaleyFest screening of “USS Callister,” creator Charlie Brooker revealed that the episode was conceived as an adult “Toy Story” and it’s about “living under a tyrant.” Its obvious riff on “Star Trek” means that it’s grander in scope and uses a healthy amount of lens flares.

The episode by episode teaser march toward the new season of “Black Mirror” continues, with what might be the most visually audacious offering yet: “Metalhead.”
David Slade (“Hannibal,” “American Gods“) gets behind the camera for this black and white instalment, starring Maxine Peake, Jake Davies, and Clint Dyer that keeps the plot under wraps (the only thing we have to go on is the super brief logline: “Beware of dogs”), but seems to promise some bloody, apocalyptic horror.

In order to stoke excitement for the upcoming season of “Black Mirror,” individual episode trailers have been released, giving sneak peeks of the standalone stories making up this season. Netflix released one of the most striking ones on Dec. 3 with “Metalhead,” written by series creator Charlie Brooker and directed by David Slade. Best known for helming “Hard Candy,” “30 Days of Night,” and key episodes of shows such as “Hannibal” and “American Gods,” Slade brings a black and white chapter to “Black Mirror.” Starring Maxine Peake (“The Theory Of Everything”), Jake Davies (“The Missing”), and Clint Dyer (“Hope Springs”), details on the episode are slim so far, save the video’s haunting description: “Beware of Dogs.” But judging by the intense footage, it appears to be one of the more horror-heavy installments of the series.

‘Black Mirror‘ is a show that I absolutely love. In what is the closest thing to a modern day ‘Twilight Zone‘, creator/show runner Charlie Booker‘s hypnotic series has managed to captivate audiences in it’s first three seasons. The show – which was originally aired on BBC – was expanded to a six episode format after Netflix picked up the show for it’s third, and now fourth season, and is highly anticipated to say the least.
Season 3 was backed by some incredible talent, and based on the trailer for season 4, this trend seems to be continuing. In particular, this upcoming season provides a hefty dose of talent in the director’s chair that includes: Jodie Foster, John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless), David Slade (Hannibal), Colm McCarthy(Peaky Blinders) and Toby Haynes (Dr Who), Tim Van Patten(The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire).

If you're a fan of Black Mirror drop what you're doing and watch the first teaser trailer for Season 4 now! Hell, it looks like there's a Star Trek inspired episode! The promo basically gives us the titles of the episodes in Season 4 and offers a little snippet of footage from each one. I'm definitely intrigued by what I'm seeing! It looks like we've got a great new season of greatness ahead of us.
Black Mirror taps into the collective unease of the modern world, with each standalone episode delivering a sharp, suspenseful tale of the myriad of ways technology has transformed all aspects of human life — in every home, on every desk, in every palm; on a plasma screen, monitor or Smartphone.

Six new realities await.
Netflix has today unveiled the freaky first teaser for Black Mirror season 4, along with the stellar cast list and official episode titles. In keeping with the show’s knack for puzzles and confounding, reality-altering mystery, the trailer above is a super-sleek and fairly ominous peek at those “six new stories,” all of which come from the mind of series creator and showrunner, Charlie Brooker.
Remaining behind the scenes for the time being, today also brings confirmation that Jodie Foster directed season 4’s pilot episode, “Arkangel,” with Toby Haynes (Sherlock), John Hillcoat (Triple 9) and David Slade (Hannibal) also receiving credits. Casting-wise, Black Mirror has added the likes of Jesse Plemons (Fargo), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) and Rosemarie Dewitt (La La Land) to its ranks, and the first-look teaser shows Netflix’s dark, prescient anthology series venturing into full-blown sci-fi territory. Dramas focusing on a kidnapping — especially of young children — typically follow a simple trajectory: The family is introduced. The child is taken. The family is torn apart. A detective saves the day (or, at least, finds answers), and a happy ending or haunting lesson is imparted to the audience.
Typically, there’s a guessing game involved, as a number of suspicious supporting characters pop up throughout the story, and the audience is invited to solve the mystery. Their reward is being right or being surprised, but what typically elevates some kidnapping dramas above the rest is what elevates any drama: formal elements — directing, writing, acting — that build upon an audience’s immediate empathy for the taken child and the tormented family.

There are not many films made about kids like Nathan Ellis. Sure, the story of a young social outsider trying to break out of his shell is not a unique one (as I wrote about in my review for fellow Tiff selection Wet Bum), but Nathan is autistic and has a very deliberate way of doing things. For instance, he cannot order chicken balls from the local Chinese restaurant unless the number of balls he gets is a prime number. Besides his picky eating, Nathan gets distracted by noise and has a hard time working in a room with a ticking clock or other students tapping their fingers on a desk loudly. He fears handshakes, is unable to understand the social cues involved with that greeting gesture, and calms himself by saying the Fibonacci sequence out loud.
Few films focus on boys who can be coldly sincere, their personality almost hidden from view.
