Fans of Jessica Chastain and Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” are in for another disappointment: The Oscar winner confirmed there is “zero possibility” she will star in the film adaptation.
Netflix first announced a feature film version of the 2017 novel — about a fictional Old Hollywood movie star who gives her final interview — back in 2022. Writer Liz Tigelaar (who’s worked on “Brothers & Sisters” and created the CW series “Life Unexpected”) was attached to pen the script, with Leslye Headland (“Russian Doll” co-creator and “The Acoylte” showrunner) attached to direct.
“I love how excited the fans are,” Chastain told E! News in a recent interview. “When I was working on Broadway, every single day, they’d be outside, when I was signing, with the books. I just love how wonderful that fan base is.”
Fans campaigned on social media for Chastain to play Celia St.

Simu Liu's breakthrough role as the lead in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings showcased his dramatic range and ability to hold his own in fight sequences. Liu has had memorable appearances in several non-superhero projects, including the romantic drama One True Loves and the crime drama Blood and Water. Liu's involvement in diverse narratives, such as the sci-fi drama Simulant and the existentialist satire Barbie, proves his versatility as an actor in both lead and supporting roles.
Simu Liu became a household name after his lead role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but the Canadian actor and singer has had memorable appearances in several non-superhero movies and TV shows as well. A new Netflix movie is taking a look at the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry. Pain Hustlers stars Emily Blunt and Chris Evans as Liza and Pete, a pair of sales reps pushing a powerful new opioid medication called Lonafen to doctors. Though the drug was designed for cancer patients, the greedy company has decided to market the product more widely, with deadly results. Blunt’s character, a single mom desperate to pay for her daughter’s medical treatment, initially is an eager participant in the scheme until she realizes the harm she’s causing.
Liza, Pete, and Zanna Therapeutics boss Jack Neel (Andy Garcia) are all fictional characters. But Pain Hustlers is inspired by a real story of corporate greed and malfeasance.

Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai will be making their Broadway debuts… as producers!
The former Secretary of State and the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate have joined the producing team of the upcoming Broadway musical Suffs, which will open next year.
Suffs, written by Shaina Taub, originally ran off-Broadway last year at the Public Theater and now it will play at the Music Box Theatre with an official opening night on April 18.
It’s 1913 and the women’s movement is heating up in America, anchored by the suffragists — “Suffs,” as they call themselves — and their relentless pursuit of the right to vote. Reaching across and against generational, racial, and class divides, these brilliant, flawed women entertain and inspire us with the story of their hard-won victory in an ongoing fight. So much has changed since the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment over a century ago, and yet we’re reminded sometimes we need to look back,...

Mercy Road is a thrilling tale about a man named Tom who is trying to save his daughter while being pursued as her abductor. The movie takes place primarily in Tom's truck, with a tight screenplay that adds to the intense and claustrophobic pace. Luke Bracey delivers a strong performance in this high-octane action film, while Toby Jones shines as "The Associate." Look out for Mercy Road in theaters on October 6.
Screen Rant is pleased to present an exclusive clip from Mercy Road, a new thriller from writer-director John Curran. The movie stars Luke Bracey (Interceptor) as a frantic man named Tom, who is on the run while simultaneously trying to save his daughter (played by Martha Kate Morgan). The rest of the world thinks he himself is the one who has abducted her, but instead, he is furiously following orders from shadowy figures in the hopes of keeping her safe.

It’s hard to say how “Painkiller,” a fictionalized Netflix limited series based on America’s opioid crisis, would play had one never seen the similarly themed and structured – and vastly superior – 2021 Hulu limited series “Dopesick.”
The new show’s misuse of lead actors Uzo Aduba, who plays a crusading U.S. Attorney’s office investigator, and Matthew Broderick, who plays real-life former Purdue Pharma head Richard Sackler – would be evident either way. So would director Peter Berg’s overuse of early aughts-style rock ‘em sock ‘em shaky camera work, quick edits and blue light.
But “Painkiller” likely would not seem so wholly unnecessary if “Dopesick” did not exist.
Unfolding over six hour-long episodes, “Painkiller” makes compelling points about Purdue, the pharmaceutical company that overhyped the painkilling potential of its drug OxyContin while underplaying its addictive qualities. Characters repeatedly call OxyContin what it is: heroin in candy coating. Such frankness...

The Broadway revival of Camelot is ending its run on July 23.
The revival of the Lerner & Loewe musical, which features a revised book by Aaron Sorkin, began its run on March 9 at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater and opened on April 13.
The revival of the 1960 musical received mixed reviews, but capacity dipped to 80 percent and grosses fell in recent weeks. Additionally, Camelot received five Tony Award nominations, including best revival of a musical, but did not take home any trophies. The production had planned to extend through at least Sept. 3.
The Bartlett Sher-directed revival, originally written by Alan Jay Lerner and centering on King Arthur’s creation of his kingdom and the love triangle between Arthur, Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot, featured a slightly trimmed down story and snappier dialogue, courtesy of Sorkin, who also removed all supernatural elements from the plot. Sorkin and Sher had previously...

For the first time in the 76-year history of the Tony Awards, three Pulitzer Prize-winning original dramas have been nominated in the Best Play category in the same year. Only five of the 17 new plays from the 2022-2023 season made the cut in the extraordinarily competitive race, and three of the five had previously received the prestigious honor of the Pulitzer: James Ijames’ “Fat Ham,” Stephen Adly Guirgis’ “Between Riverside and Crazy,” and Martyna Majok’s “Cost of Living.”
This historic result was not a guarantee. Indeed, according to our final official odds, only two of the plays were anticipated to break through: “Fat Ham,” which ultimately nabbed five nominations, and “Between Riverside and Crazy,” which landed two. “Cost of Living,” which closed back in November, was ranked seventh, but its odds were bolstered by three of our Editors and two of our Experts correctly predicting it to break through.

The 2023 Tony Awards nominations featured a number of snubs and surprises, including an unexpected six nods for Ain’t No Mo, which closed shortly before the end of 2022 despite a star-studded effort to keep it going.
It seems Tony voters well remembered this fall’s productions, handing out five nods for Cost of Living, which closed in November, and three for KPop, which closed in December.
Another surprise was the strong showing by corn-centric musical Shucked, which landed nine nods.
But Tony voters surprisingly left out a few stars in more recently opened productions: Neither Oscar Isaac nor Rachel Brosnahan were nominated for their leading roles in The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, and neither Danielle Brooks nor John David Washington were nominated for The Piano Lesson, with director Latanya Richardson Jackson not nominated for directing.
Other well-known stars not nominated include Laura Linney, not nominated for her role in Summer,...

Some of the biggest names of Broadway (and Hollywood) won’t be receiving those phone calls of congratulations today as this morning’s Tony Awards nominations included more than a few surprising — or, in some cases, not surprising — omissions.
Aaron Sorkin, whose rewritten book for the classic musical Camelot was not beloved by critics, didn’t get any Tony approval today. His revisions were extensive enough to make him eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category, but he is not among the nominees.
As for lead actors and actresses, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan, the bold-name stars of The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, were overlooked, as was The Piano Lesson‘s John David Washington and Pictures From Home‘s Nathan Lane. Marcel Spears, the star of the acclaimed Fat Ham, was not nominated, nor was Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi). Jefferson Mays, so...

With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

Mercilessly photogenic melodrama saddled with faintly patronising shtick as Phillipa Soo has to choose between new fiance and returning husband thought to be dead
Adapted from the eponymous novel by BookTok favourite Taylor Jenkins Reid, this sanitised melodrama is so algorithm-baked and slathered in life lessons it makes butane-sniffing seem like the preferable option. Phillipa Soo plays Emma, a Massachusetts bookseller caught in the living hell of a Shang-Chi/Point Break sandwich: about to marry her childhood best friend Sam (Simu Liu), she is bowled over when previous hunk of a husband Jesse (Luke Bracey) – who went missing in a helicopter crash on their first wedding anniversary – suddenly turns up with full Robinson Crusoe beard.
Jesse actually has been trapped on a desert island for four years. But that’s the level of subtlety Andy Fickman’s mercilessly photogenic love triangle operates on, initially hyping up Emma and Jesse’s...

At this year’s Tony Awards, there are three actresses in contention for two separate performances in two separate productions they’ve appeared in this past season. They are Carolee Carmello, Crystal Lucas-Perry, and Phillipa Soo. Will any of them land at least one Tony nomination on May 2? Let’s go over each of the three.
Back in the fall, Carmello played John Dickinson in a limited run of Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of “1776.” Now she’s playing the wicked stepmother in Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s newest musical, “Bad Cinderella.” Carmello has been nominated three times before. First in 1999 for the original production of “Parade,” then in 2006 for “Lestat,” and in 2013 for “Scandalous.”
As she is on the ballot for Best Featured Actress in a Musical twice, it’s possible she could split her support in the nominating process. However, what could hurt her more from getting nominated...

Jessica Chastain is sharing her autograph policy. The Oscar winner was recently captured in a viral video turning down signing a copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” novel following her performance in Broadway revival of “A Doll’s House” at the Hudson Theatre, outside of which she regularly greets fans.
“I can’t sign that, just because I’m not doing it,” Chastain says to the fan in the video. The “Molly’s Game” star later took to Twitter to explain her reasoning for declining to sign books such as these.
“I’ve been asked multiple times by fans, to sign books that I’m not attached to contractually. Because it feels wrong, and like I’m taking credit for someone else’s work, I’ll say I can’t sign because I’m not doing it,” Chastain wrote. “That doesn’t mean I’ve read a bad script.

There was a moment I knew much was going wrong with Aaron Sorkin's musical bookwriting debut with the "Camelot" Broadway revival. It arrives when Phillipa Soo groans at the title number "Camelot" with an attitude that reads "Is this guy seriously doing a musical number?"
Yet, the same scene builds to a realization that Sorkin's penmanship can go right. It's when the young King Arthur (Andrew Burnap) persuades his arranged betrothed, Guenevere (Soo), of a risky experiment: "Together we may discover if power might be harnessed as a force of good." The promise of this experiment persuades the skeptical princess that her marital purpose might yield a net gain — as long as she doesn't over-test her obligations.
Those aware of "Camelot" and its often-adapted legend source material (credited to T.H. White's "The Once and Future King" in this case) know that the burgeoning passions between Guenevere and the...

According to our combined predictions as of this writing, the five who are expected to receive Best Actress in a Musical nominations at this year’s Tony Awards are Victoria Clark (“Kimberly Akimbo”), Annaleigh Ashford (“Sweeney Todd”), Micaela Diamond (“Parade”), Sara Bareilles (“Into the Woods”), and Patina Miller (“Into the Woods”). However, there is a contender I think deserves to be in the conversation much more, and that would be Adrianna Hicks (“Some Like It Hot”).
In this stage musical adaptation of Billy Wilder‘s 1959 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, Hicks plays Sugar Kane, the lead singer of an all-girl band. What’s a Camelot without a little magic?
Aaron Sorkin works up an answer to that question in the new Lincoln Center Theater production of the 1960 Lerner & Loewe musical, and the result is an adaptation that seems at every turn to be pleading its case for its own relevance. Where the West Wing creator conjured a real sort of writerly sorcery in 2018 with his transformation of the beloved property To Kill A Mockingbird into a new, relevant and thrilling stage work, his efforts this time around often seem strained in their attempts to drag Camelot into the 21st Century.
In its way, Camelot, at least as we’ve come to know it until now, is, in its stodgy and fitful way, a musical as emblematic of the 1960s as the more obvious generation-defining theatrical statements of the era (“Gimme a head with hair!”). Camelot, with its “might for right” social...

Slowly but surely, rom-coms are making their comeback on screen. Mostly recently, it comes in the form of The Avenue’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel “One True Loves,” starring Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey. And really, Bracey would argue that romances are “some of the best movies you can watch.”
“One True Loves” follows Soo’s character Emma as she grapple with the loss of Jesse (Bracey), and finds love in the form of her childhood best friend Sam (Simu Liu). But, when Jesse suddenly calls her one day after being missing for four years, Emma must choose between her husband and her fiancé. And so, an impossible love triangle ensues.
Bracey may have broken onto the scene in action movies like “Point Break” and “Hacksaw Ridge,” but in the last few years, he’s also solidified himself as a rom-com heartthrob. He starred alongside Emma Watson in Netflix’s “Holidate,...

The cast of One True Loves includes a combination of blockbuster movie stars and Broadway talents in a story of three characters who unexpectedly find themselves in a complicated love triangle. Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Daisy Jones & the Six), the romantic drama follows a woman torn between her thought-dead husband and her new fiancé. It's like a gender-swapped remake of the Cary Grant and Irene Dunne classic My Favorite Wife, minus the screwball comedy antics, and One True Loves is similarly hinged on the appeal of its casting.
While not filled with household names, especially compared to previous movies directed by Andy Fickman (Playing With Fire), which were led by the likes of Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Bette Midler, the main and supporting cast of One True Loves consists of recognizable actors from some of the biggest entertainments of the past decade.

Many of us would consider ourselves lucky if we found one great love in our lifetime. But what happens when lightning strikes more than once, and life forces you to choose between them? This is the question at the center of director Andy Fickman's One True Loves, which stars Phillipa Soo as Emma, a young woman forced to make this exact decision after her presumed-dead husband Jesse (Luke Bracey) returns home to find her engaged to her childhood best friend Sam (Simu Liu). Caught between two hunks who love you? We should all have such problems.

Phillipa Soo, Simu Liu, and Luke Bracey make for one heck of a love triangle in One True Loves, based on the novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Directed by Andy Fickman, the film follows Emma (Soo), whose marriage to Jesse (Bracey) is cut short when he is presumed killed in a helicopter crash. After years of processing her grief, Emma moves on with Sam (Liu) and falls in love. However, after the new couple becomes engaged, it turns out Jesse survived, and is back, leaving Emma with an impossible decision to make.

One True Loves is the newest onscreen adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid's work, following closely behind Prime Video's take on Daisy Jones & the Six. Unlike the previous outing, however, Reid herself penned the screenplay for One True Loves. The film follows the once-adventurous travel writer Emma (played by Hamilton's Phillipa Soo) who has since settled into life as a bookseller and is about to marry her childhood best friend. But when her husband turns up alive after being presumed dead for years, Emma must re-evaluate all the choices she's made thus far.
Simu Liu stars in One True Loves as Emma's steadfast best friend and fiancé Sam, who helped her overcome her heartbreak but now stands to have his own heart broken in turn. Luke Bracey (Holidate), meanwhile, plays her first love and husband Jesse, whose own love of adventure led to the plane crash that kept him...

It was recently announced that ever-prolific online content factory Buzzfeed would begin using artificial intelligence technology to generate articles — so can A.I. screenwriting be far behind? Amid a surfeit of production company idents at the outset of “One True Loves,” the presence of Buzzfeed Studios’ logo brings that question to mind; the rigidly generic love story that ensues keeps it there. In fact, this adaptation of a 2016 bestseller by Taylor Jenkins Reid (“Daisy Jones & The Six”) was scripted by the author herself, in collaboration with her husband Alex. There’s scant evidence of personal investment, however, in this clean, anodyne drama of messy romantic conflicts, in which everyone from director Andy Fickman to stars Simu Liu, Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey is working in strict get-the-job-done mode.

In recent months, the Taylor Jenkins Reid adaptation to receive the most attention is Prime Video's rocking Daisy Jones & the Six miniseries. On top of that, Reid already has several additional adaptations in the works, and the mere idea of each one has inspired plenty of excitement online. Amid all that is One True Loves, an understated movie based on one of Reid's earlier novels. One True Loves couldn't be farther from the glitz and glam of Daisy Jones and the other in-development projects, though that isn't a knock against its quality. One True Loves occasionally suffers from melodrama and a blunt approach, but its winning trio and earnest depiction of love save the day.

Simu Liu may be starring in one of the biggest movies of 2023, but no one will mistake “One True Loves” for that honorific. But, somehow, this rom-com adaptation is more plastic than “Barbie.”

Emma’s first husband Jesse (Luke Bracey) was presumed dead after a fatal helicopter crash, and miraculously is rescued four years later, proving to be alive and very ready to rekindle his relationship with Emma right before her wedding to Sam.

First “Company,” then “Into the Woods,” and now the demon barber of Fleet Street. In the year or so since legendary composer Stephen Sondheim’s death, Broadway has seen an increasing number of revivals of his works. The trend continued on March 26 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with the opening of a new production of his masterpiece, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Tony nominee and internationally-renowned vocalist Josh Groban plays the menacing title role as the wronged barber out for revenge, starring opposite Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett, the schemer who devises baking Todd’s victims into meat pies in an austere nineteenth-century London.

Aaron Sorkin opens up about suffering a near-fatal stroke in 2022. The acclaimed screenwriter, known for his signature snappy dialogue, got his start writing Broadway plays and rose to fame as the mastermind behind The West Wing and the screenwriter behind The Social Network, for which he won an Academy Award. However, his life and prolific career were almost recently cut short due to a serious health scare.

Ahead of the Broadway opening of his new “Camelot” musical adaptation, Aaron Sorkin revealed to the New York Times that he suffered a stroke last November. The medical emergency occurred two months before “Camelot” rehearsals were set to begin and resulted in his blood pressure being so high that “you’re supposed to be dead,” Sorkin said.
As reported by The Times: “For about a month afterward, [Sorkin] was slurring words. He had trouble typing; he was discouraged from flying for a few weeks; and until recently, he couldn’t sign his name. Those issues are now behind him, and the main lingering effect is that he still can’t really taste food.”
“Mostly it was a loud wake-up call,” Sorkin told the publication. “I thought I was one of those people who could eat whatever he wanted, smoke as much as he wanted, and it’s not going to affect me.

In the lead-up to Tony nominations being announced on May 2, Sam Eckmann and I are predicting 10 of the Musical categories, where new breakout shows like “Kimberly Akimbo” and “Some Like it Hot” and revivals of “Sweeney Todd” and “Into the Woods” will compete for the highest honors of the New York theatre community. "No matter what you do, you're going to break somebody's heart." The Avenue has revealed the trailer for the film One True Loves, a new romantic dramedy from filmmaker Andy Fickman. Based on the book of the same name, the film is one of these cliche, cheesy stories about a woman forced to decide between two men she loves deeply. Is there such a thing as more than one true love? Yet another modern movie trying to grapple with the question of monogamy and whether it's still relevant anymore. A woman is unexpectedly forced to choose between the husband she has long thought dead and the fiance who has finally brought her back to life. The three people at the center are played by Phillipa Soo as Emma, Simu Liu as Sam, Luke Bracey as Jesse, with a supporting cast including Michaela Conlin, Tom Everett Scott, Gary Hudson, Oceana Matsumoto,...
