Ava DuVernay, George W. Bush, Chance the Rapper Join SXSW Speaker Lineup
South by Southwest Conference and Festivals has announced that Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg; author and host of the New York Times podcast “Together Apart” Priya Parker in conversation with Anand Giridharadas; and writer and author Charles Yu as Keynote Speakers, along with a new round of Featured Speakers for SXSW Online.

The virtual event takes place from March 16-20, 2021.

Buttigieg, Parker, and Yu join the Keynote lineup that includes previously-announced sessions from entrepreneur, political leader and author Stacey Abrams in a Keynote conversation with author N.K. Jemisi; and legendary musician, philanthropist and entrepreneur Willie Nelson in conversation with Texas Monthly writer at large Andy Langer. South by Southwest has added U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as a keynote speaker.

The virtual festival, which will take place March 16-20, will feature the former presidential candidate as part of a keynote lineup that also includes Stacey Abrams and Willie Nelson. The other keynote speakers announced Wednesday were Interior Chinatown author Charles Yu and Together Apart host Priya Parker, in conversation with Winners Take All author Anand Giridharadas.

“Saturday Night Live” has booked Nick Jonas for its Feb. 27 episode.

The musician, actor and “The Voice” coach will appear as both the episode’s host and musical guest on the fifth episode of 2021. Although he has performed on the show before, this will be his first time appearing as the host, as well as his first time pulling double duty. He is also the first to hold both titles in this current 46th season of the late-night sketch giant.

Jonas is set to perform his newly announced single “Spaceman,” which will drop just days before his “SNL” appearance, on Feb. 25. In trying to explain the man and phenomenon that is Tekashi 6ix9ine, Showtime’s new docuseries does its best to embody him.

“Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6ix9ine,” directed by Karam Gill, alternates between self-consciously shaggy found footage and slick, stylized interludes. Like its subject, “Supervillain” depends on social media to build itself up. It stitches together years of Instagram videos to paint its portrait of a man who deliberately transformed himself into rap’s most chaotic antagonist, with his rise reflected in his ballooning follower numbers. It interviews people from his inner circle, observers of his increasingly hyperbolic life and, sporadically, Tekashi 6x9ine himself in audio clips from the suburban safehouse he’s most recently called home. Roku snapped up the rights to the majority of Quibi’s multimillion-dollar portfolio original programming — more than 75 shows in all — and will make them available free to stream in 2021 on the Roku Channel.

Following Quibi’s decision last October to shut down after failing to attract a sustainable base of subscribers, Roku acquired Quibi Holdings LLC, the company that holds all of Quibi’s content distribution rights.

Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed. A source familiar with the agreement said Roku is paying “significantly” less than $100 million for the Quibi library, confirming an earlier Wall Street Journal report. Rob Holmes, Roku’s VP of programming, said in an interview, “We do think this deal represents a great value.”
