The 2025 Santa Barbara International Film Festival has announced the lineup for its 40th anniversary event, with 52 percent of the films directed by women. The 12-day extravaganza will raise funds for Los Angeles wildfire relief to help the community that has been devastated by the deadly infernos.
Sbiff will run from Feb. 4 to Feb. 15 — that’s one day longer than usual in honor of its four-decade mark. The festival will showcase movies from 60 different countries, including 33 world premieres and 74 United States premieres, and a majority come from female directors. In addition, there will be tributes to talented artisans, panel discussions, and free community education and outreach programs.
“As the tragic events in our sister city of Los Angeles were unfolding, we debated about moving forward with Sbiff,” said Roger Durling, Sbiff executive director. “Film has always been a conduit for comfort and renewal, and film festivals play a vital role in fostering a sense of connection.

The Best Supporting Actor category will see fierce competition this year at the 97th Academy Awards. Forget voting for a winner, the Academy will be scratching their heads to come up with the five nominees. Before the announcement of final nominees, FandomWire predicts the top 5 contenders and another 4 actors who could become Robert Downey Jr.’s successor.

Interestingly, our top five for the nominees have never won an Oscar, despite one of them receiving three nominations including two Best Supporting Actor nods. However, three of these contenders have Emmys to their names to show for. And the other nominee is making waves this award season, with nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and BAFTAs.

Joel McHale is set to play Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) husband in “Scream 7,” according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
In the last couple of movies, Sidney’s husband has been referred to as “Mark,” with David Arquette’s Dewey even asking Sidney how Mark was. The long-running inference was that Sidney had married Mark Kincaid, the character played by Patrick Dempsey in “Scream 3.” Radio Silence, the filmmaking team behind 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI,” confirmed that this was, indeed, Mark Kincaid that they were referencing. But McHale is playing a new character, Mark Evans, breaking from the pre-established lore.
McHale joins a cast which includes Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and new cast members Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner and Anna Camp.
The seventh installment of the classic meta-horror franchise will be released on Feb. 27, 2026. Created by Kevin Williamson...

When the 2025 Oscars nominations are announced on Jan. 23 at 5:30 a.m. Pt, expect Emilia Pérez to be on top.
According to Gold Derby predictions, the Netflix musical dramedy is poised to receive 11 bids — more than any other contender — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña). That would be two fewer than last year’s nominations leader Oppenheimer at 13, but on par with 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once at 11 — both of which won Best Picture.
Close behind with 10 forecasted noms is A24’s The Brutalist, starring Best Actor frontrunner Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who tries to live out the American Dream in the 1940s and 1950s. Expect nominations for Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), per Gold Derby odds.

The Criterion Collection has announced their April slate of discs, with one soon-to-be Oscar nominee, Anora, among the titles. Unveiled as spine #1259, Anora could see a little push from voters, especially as voting has been pushed back to January 17th due to the ongoing fires in Los Angeles. While Anora won’t actually see the streets until April 29th, the announcement alone could give it even more prestige for voters.
Anora wouldn’t be the first time that Criterion announced titles that neatly coincided with the Academy Awards. Two of the biggest stand-outs of recent years were The Grand Budapest Hotel and Parasite, with Wes Anderson’s film being revealed in January when Academy Award nominations are traditionally announced and Bong Joon-ho’s picture being promoted just a few days before final voting closed.

Back in the 1950s and ’60s, actors were regularly introduced as “star of stage, screen, and television,” but these days there are precious few film or TV stars willing to take that scary leap to the stage. One who has and has been amply awarded in all three venues is Colman Domingo, who began his stage career at Joseph Papp‘s New York Shakespeare Festival and moved eventually to Broadway, where he has earned two Tony Award nominations, for acting and producing.
Domingo then turned to television, guesting on multiple Law and Order episodes — a must for any New York actor’s résumé. Domingo then landed a successful series gig, with a seven-season stint on Fear the Walking Dead, which led to HBO’s hit Euphoria, for which he earned a 2022 Primetime Emmy Award as a guest actor.

Hollywood’s award season has already warmed up the new year; the Golden Globes successfully separated favorites from potential surprises, and nominations for SAG and Critics Choice Awards have already been unveiled. Now, the British Academy Film Awards have followed suit.
While Hollywood is fighting the cataclysmic California wildfires, postponing forthcoming ceremonies and extending Academy Awards submission dates, fortunately, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles face no such threat. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced nominees across 26 categories, recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema.
Doctor Who actor David Tennant, last year’s host, will return to lead the ceremony. This year marks one of the most competitive lineups, with no clear frontrunners and several close races. Angelina Jolie returned to acting after her MCU stint in Eternals, in Pablo Larraín’s Maria. Her performance as the opera singer Maria Callas has received rave reviews and it even garnered her a Golden Globe nomination. Jolie joined other actresses at The Hollywood Reporter’s Round Table this year.
Jolie revealed that she does not tend to watch her performances after filming them as she does not want to get conscious about her looks and the way she sounds. This habit seems to be common among other actors too, including Jolie’s The Tourist co-star Johnny Depp.

Last Friday, stylists-to-the-stars Elizabeth Stewart and Jordan Grossman — who founded the nonprofit Chic Relief during the pandemic — were packing pieces for five personal friends who lost their homes in the fires. The idea was to help them rebuild their closets after they’d lost everything. “And we thought, ‘You know what? We think we can do this for a lot more people!'” says Stewart.
In the days since, Stewart and Grossman have launched an ambitious effort to clothe and assist hundreds of families who lost everything in the Los Angeles fires. They’re not alone. A growing network of stylists, celebrities, Hollywood executives and creatives have joined in (or are working on their own) to extend the reach of relief efforts.

The 2025 BAFTA nominations had its share of snubs and surprises, some less so than others (Denzel Washington missing again is just par for the course now). The final televised precursor — and an industry one to boot — made the acting categories even messier while ostensibly taking other contenders out of the running. Here’s where we’re at with all four races post-bafta nominations.
Best Actor
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAG and BAFTA nominations: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG nominations: Daniel Craig (Queer)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and BAFTA nominations: Hugh Grant (Heretic)
Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations: Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice)
Assuming the top four are in — as many have all season, and the quartet has not missed a beat — that leaves one spot up for grabs. Craig has occupied that spot in the odds all season long,...

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.
Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. Emilia herself, Karla Sofía Gascón, is up for Leading Actress, with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña...

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in – here’s a look at the snubs and the snub-ies.
With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.
It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.
Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

Blessed be Edward Berger, whose Vatican drama Conclave is now officially the front-runner in this year’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations.

There’s an old saying: “It’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.” But when it comes to the Oscars, it’s not just about the life you’ve lived, but the roles you’ve played, the moments you’ve owned, and—let’s face it—the right timing. The 2025 Academy Awards are still a few months away, but the race is already in full swing, and while you might have thought Angelina Jolie and Zoe Saldaña would be the ones to watch, the winds are shifting.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) will announce its nominations on Wednesday, Jan. 15, casting a spotlight on an unpredictable awards season. This year’s nods come amid a somber backdrop as the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have left communities grappling with loss. I’m sure the BAFTA’s announcement will mention the City of Angels and the first responders, the true heroes battling the blazes.
For the approximately 13,500 international members of BAFTA — representing a diverse range of disciplines across film and television — this year’s nominations serve as a cultural barometer, often influencing the Oscar race. With ballots for the Academy Awards due on Friday, Jan. 17, following its announced voting extension, BAFTA (who voted before the wildfires broke out) may provide a clearer picture of where AMPAS’ influential international voting bloc will likely land.

This is not the first film in which American director Sean Baker has deep-dived into the life of a sex worker. His 2015 gem Tangerine followed the life of transgender sex worker. Baker’s Red Rocket was about an aging porn star.
Baker’s best work Florida Project trailed a bright 6-year of modest means Moonee through her summer adventures.
In Anora, Baker’s latest and presumably best work the heroine is a spunky material girl, a bar dancer and a sex worker named Anora, played with a high-strung fidelity by Mikey Madison.
When the flamboyant , feelingly fetching film opens we are shown multiple montages of Anora enjoying her sex time with various clients. There is no angst or poignancy about Anora’s vocation which like an extended vacation for Anora.
Once she meets the immature Russian heir Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn) the smitten rich brat offers to buy her exclusive services for a week.

Let’s start with Robert Altman’s 1992 “The Player” and its opening frenetic camera panning sequence: During that hilarious, farcical rapid-fire parade of studio-insider-wannabe sights and sounds, we see a quick pitch to make a film that is deemed as “Out of Africa meets Pretty Woman.” Over three decades later, we’ve actually witnessed a misguided facsimile of “Mean Streets” meets “Pretty Woman.”
In 2024’s “Anora,” writer/director Sean Baker’s presumed intentions fall short, with this latest installment in a body of work that seems to be very much of a tightly circumscribed acquired taste. His indie repertoire follows our marginalized (some might deem low-propensity voter type) ne’er-do-wells, who collectively appear nomadic and vulgar, but occasionally have their quiet interludes that can generate a stylish offset. With an affinity for sex workers and various car tricks, not just limited to front-seat romps and malodorous puking, Baker provides us...

One month ago, we asked Gemini AI for Oscar predictions, and it endorsed Gladiator II as a contender for picture, director (Ridley Scott), and supporting actor (Denzel Washington). Well, Google’s artificial intelligence bot has rebooted, and it now believes the mixed-reviewed sequel will be mostly forgotten come Oscars time. In fact, Gemini’s current picks in the six main categories align much more closely with Gold Derby’s overall choices.
You can see Gemini’s forecasted nominations below, where The Brutalist, a period piece about a Holocaust survivor who’s trying to live the American Dream, is expected to clean up with bids for picture, director (Brady Corbet), actor (Adrien Brody), supporting actress (Felicity Jones), and supporting actor (Guy Pearce). Meanwhile, Anora, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez are expected to nab four noms apiece in the six main races.

At the 82nd annual Golden Globes held on January 5, Demi Moore, who has been working steadily in Hollywood for decades, won her first ever competitive acting award thanks to Coralie Fargeat's body-horror hit "The Substance."
Moore beat out some stiff competition to win Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award, including Cynthia Erivo in "Wicked: Part One" and Mikey Madison in "Anora," and her powerful speech about how women in the entertainment industry are constantly trying to measure up to a truly impossible standard was nothing if not deeply inspiring. Despite apparently being told that she would never be anything more than a "popcorn actress" by some foolish studio executive, Moore proudly stood on stage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, telling women all over the world, "In those moments when we don't think we're smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough or...

As always, 2024 has been one of the best years for the film industry. Despite the many roadblocks and issues, the audiences got to witness some of the finest films made across different genres and grand performances from new as well as seasoned actors. It seems Pamela Anderson has a new fan. After seeing her performance in Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl,” writer/director Aaron Sorkin took to Variety to write a column in praise and support of her cinematic reinvention.
“We were distracted,” Sorkin wrote. “For most of her life, Pamela Anderson was being upstaged by ‘Pamela Anderson.’ Then Gia Coppola sent her a screenplay by Kate Gersten, and now Ms. Anderson, having given one of the finest performances of this or any year, has won awards from film festivals around the world and is in the middle of Academy Award conversations.”
Though she didn’t end up going home a winner, Anderson was nominated at last week’s Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance by a Female Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. She was once again honored this week with a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild Awards in the...

For Sean Baker, it’s theatrical or bust.
Paychecks from streamers can be tantalized in front of him, but when it comes to his original work, not only is about making works for the cinema, but shooting on celluloid, too.
“We shouldn’t abandon the medium which created this artform,” Baker tells us on this episode of Crew Call, on why he opted to shoot Anora on film.
“We shot it on film, we shoot it for the cinema and that’s how we want people to see it.”
“Theatrical means everything to me,” Baker tells us, “I consider home entertainment to be an afterthought.”
“Neon allowed me a long theatrical window,” he adds. Anora landed on digital and PVOD after a 60-day window on Dec. 17 following its Oct. 18 theatrical release.
“With each film, I fight for a longer theatrical window and hopefully, the next time I get way over 90 days,...
