NewsNation Anchor Markie Martin Says Viewers Are ‘Ready for a Change’ From Cable News ‘Echo Chamber’
Markie Martin shared a frustration with many longtime cable viewers about the divisive partisanship in national news organizations — which made joining the team of the nonpartisan news organization NewsNation a perfect fit.
“When you channel surf, it’s hard to find a cable news network that isn’t an echo chamber for its audience, and so, for years, I just thought that unbiased fair journalism doesn’t really exist as a whole,” Martin told TheWrap in a recent interview. “I think NewsNation was created at a time when American news consumers were ready for change, and they were ready to watch something that wasn’t an echo chamber.”
For Martin, who began her tenure co-hosting “Morning in America” alongside Adrienne Bankert on Monday, joining the network at the onset of its rebrand in 2020 enabled her to get in on the ground floor as a world-class team of journalists focuses on...

In NewsNation, New York City isn’t the de facto location for a morning-news program.
On Monday, the Nexstar Media-backed cable-news outlet expands its Chicago-based “Morning in America” to four hours and adds Markie Martin, formerly the network’s Dallas correspondent, as a co-anchor alongside Adrienne Bankert. There is some precedent for such a format. Robin Meade succeeded at it for 20 years by holding forth from Atlanta on behalf of Hln. Her program, “Morning Express,” was canceled earlier this year by Warner Bros. Discovery in a cost-cutting maneuver.
“I grew up in small-town Oklahoma, and often felt that national news networks catered more toward big-city lives,” says Martin in a recent interview. “I think our content lines up with what every American cares about on a daily basis.” Martin arrived in the Windy City for her new assignment just about a week ago, and was in need of furniture for her new apartment.

Chris Stirewalt, the Fox News political editor let go from the network in January 2021 said that he has been called to testify before the January 6th Committee and will do so on Monday.
“I have been called to testify before this committee, and I will do so on Monday,” Stirewalt said on NewsNation, where he serves as political editor.
He told anchor Adrienne Bankert that he was “not in a position now to tell you what my testimony will be about,” but said that he wanted to make a full disclosure.
The committee already has indicated that it would explore how Donald Trump’s false election claims were spread in the media.
Stirewalt was dropped from Fox News in January 2021, in what the network said was a restructuring. But Stirewalt later wrote that he was fired from the network after defending the Fox News decision desk’s call of Arizona...

NewsNation, Nexstar’s nearly year-old news network, is expanding its lineup with the launch of a morning news show hosted by Adrienne Bankert and a primetime program headlined by Dan Abrams.
Abrams will host Dan Abrams Live from 8 Pm Et to 9 Pm Et weeknights starting on Sept. 27, while Bankert will anchor Morning in America, a weekday morning talk show from 7 Am Et to 10 Am Et.
The addition of Abrams and Bankert marks the latest evolution for NewsNation, which launched last September with the mandate of being a nightly, objective alternative to opinion programming on cable news networks. Its primetime lineup averaged just 33,000 viewers during the week of July 4, according the Nielsen.
But Nexstar has been moving forward with expansion plans for the channel, which was formerly known as WGNAmerica. Earlier this year, it added Ashley Banfield to its primetime lineup with her show Banfield, signaling an emphasis on news personalities in primetime.

Former “Live Pd” host Dan Abrams is joining NewsNation with his own nightly primetime show, as the former WGN America undergoes a major expansion of hours. Additionally, “GMA Weekend” host Adrienne Bankert is joining the cable channel to anchor a new three-hour weekday morning news show called “Morning in America.”
Both shows launch on Sept. 27. “Dan Abrams Live” will air weeknights from 8 p.m. Et to 9 p.m. Et. “Morning in America” will air weekdays from 7 a.m. Et to 10 a.m. Et.
The Nexstar Media-owned cable channel is adding 26 hours of news, analysis and talk to its weekly schedule. NewsNation launched in September 2020 with 19 weekly hours of original programming. One year out from that rebranding, it will be at 55 hours.
“Dan Abrams is the epitome of the pure, common sense approach to journalism envisioned when NewsNation launched last September,” NewsNation’s president of news, Michael Corn, said in a statement on Monday.

Nexstar Media Group’s fledgling NewsNation cable network is shuffling its programming lineup to add a nightly live show hosted by Dan Abrams and a three-hour morning news block anchored by Adrienne Bankert.
Both shows begin Sept. 27. “Dan Abrams Live,” to air at 8 p.m. Et, is described as a news analysis program that he asserts will be “less overtly partisan” that other cable news primetime hours. Abrams is a former anchor of ABC’s late-night mainstay “Nightline.” He will continue in his role as chief legal analyst for ABC News even with his new nightly berth on NewsNation.
Abrams emphasized that the goal is not to score partisan points but to examine complicated issues, from foreign policy to domestic battles such as the current state and federal conflicts over voting rights legislation.

The OWN Spotlight series “Black Women OWN the Conversation” is taking on the topic of mental health with its first episode of the new season — and for the deep, emotional conversation, the show enlisted a special guest.
For the first time, Oprah Winfrey joins the conversation, appearing on the show virtually alongside hosts Adrienne Bankert and Jotaka Eaddy and panelists Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris, Dr. Dena Simmons and Kym Whitley.
The episode was already set to be momentous, since it marked showrunner and exec producer Jennifer Ryan and her team’s first live audience taping since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but Winfrey’s virtual appearance was an extra source of excitement.
“She’s the Ow of OWN, and we’re very honored to have done this show and had her on it,” Ryan tells Variety, sitting on the show’s pink-hued set at the end of the episode’s taping.

ABC News is premiering a six-episode series on Tuesday that is being promoted as something far different for traditional network newsmagazine: Soul of a Nation focuses on the Black experience in America, or as ABC News executive Marie Nelson put it on Friday, “The series expands the vision of Black life in America in a way broadcast TV journalism has never done.”
Although a preview of the first episode was not available, a preview clip showed that this was different than the traditional, 60 Minutes-style newsmagazine: Sterling K. Brown will guest host. It will feature Byron Pitts’ interview with Danny Glover, in a segment on reparations, and Pierre Thomas’ sitdown with Capitol police officer Harry Dunn, but the debut also will include a spoken word performance by Common and close out with a musical performance from John Legend (who is also interviewed by Adrienne Bankert).
