Spoilers for "Tales of the Jedi" follow
Count Dooku feels like a wasted "Star Wars" villain. A late addition to the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, he has scant focus even in "Attack of the Clones" and a quick death in "Revenge of the Sith." The idea behind his character is a solid one; a Jedi who's disgusted with the corrupt Senate and his order's complicity with it, and so breaks away. It sets him up as the foil for the also doomed-to-fall Anakin Skywalker.
In practice, though, there's not much to him. The other characters call him a "political idealist" but that doesn't really register onscreen. Dooku winds up entirely carried by Christopher Lee's presence — which goes a long way, to be fair, but can't substitute for characterization. "Tales of the Jedi" seeks to remedy this. Half of the six episodes spotlight a younger Dooku, showing the good intentions...

For better or worse, Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi is for the fans. This is clear from the very first episode, in which a one-year-old Ahoska Tano faces an unexpected crisis during a hunting trip with her mother (Janina Gavankar). If you know much about the fan-favorite character already, I presume it offers a sweet little taste of the fearlessness that defines her, along with clarifying insights into the loving, tight-knit, nature-loving community that birthed her.
If you don’t, though — and here I will confess that I did not, having never gotten into The Clone Wars or Star Wars Rebels — the vignette feels like a detailed answer to a question never even imagined, much less asked. That doesn’t make it a bad time, necessarily. But it does make it a less than ideal entry point into the animated corner of the ever-expanding Star Wars galaxy.

Somehow, Palpatine returned. Again. Okay, that’s not a real surprise, especially for an animated series like Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, which is set in the Prequel Trilogy era. Created by Dave Filoni and Charles Murray, the Disney+ series tells the story of young Jedi Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku before he abandoned the Jedi and fell to the dark side. Along the way, Ahsoka and Dooku encounter many familiar faces, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, and yes, Senator-turned-Chancellor-turned-Emperor Sheev Palpatine.
As one would hope, the series features a number of fan-favorite actors returning to their signiture roles. Although Rosario Dawson has put her own stamp on the live-action version of Ahsoka, first seen in The Mandalorian, the character will be once again voiced by Ashley Eckstein, who originally played the character for the 2008 movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the subsequent series. While Christopher Lee played Dooku in the movies,...

"I've been warning them about the coming darkness…" Disney revealed the first official trailer for the new animated anthology series of Star Wars shorts called Tales of the Jedi, yet another Dave Filoni project developed by Lucasfilm Animation. Filoni began writing the series while working on The Mandalorian, and revealed the first official details about it in May 2022. This new batch contains six episodes split into two "paths", one following the character Ahsoka Tano and the other depicting a young Count Dooku before his fall to the dark side. The voice cast includes Liam Neeson back as Qui-Gon, Micheál Richardson, Janina Gavankar, Matt Lanter, Dee Bradley Baker, and Ashley Eckstein. This is made in the same style as Filoni's previous series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Following a nationwide search, “The Crown” has found its Prince William in newcomer Senan West, Variety can exclusively reveal.
The 13 year old is the real-life son of Dominic West, who takes over from Josh O’Conner as Prince Charles in the highly anticipated fifth season of the hit Netflix show. Elizabeth Debicki (“Tenet”) will play his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, replacing Emma Corrin.
Variety understands Senan has been cast as a slightly older Prince William, portraying him as he begins to mature into a young man. He will make his on-screen debut in the final episodes of the season. It’s believed the young actor’s audition, submitted via tape by his agent, caught the attention of the show’s producers.
William had only just turned 15 in 1997 when Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris alongside her beau, Dodi Al Fayed. As Variety revealed in September, Al...

This sappy film about an artist renovating his late wife’s Tuscan holiday home with his son has eerie parallels with the actors’ family tragedy
The big, unique selling point of this somewhat sappy but quite watchable feature is that the two main roles – a charismatic, widowed artist named Robert and his handsome but still finding-his-feet-careerwise son Jack – are played by Liam Neeson and his real-life son, up-and-coming actor Micheál Richardson. In the film, Robert’s wife/Jack’s mother died tragically young in a car accident. This, of course, parallels the death of Neeson’s real-life wife/Richardson’s mother, Natasha, from injuries incurred during a skiing accident when her sons were still in their teens.
Knowing all this adds a certain frisson to the climactic scene where father and son have it out about the different ways they handled the late woman’s death. But the lack of finesse,...

Micheál Richardson had just entered his teenage years when his mother, Natasha Richardson, passed away. Now, he's speaking out about her legacy. The 25-year-old actor remembered the late actress in a new interview with The Times. Natasha died two days after she suffered a head injury while skiing in 2009. She was 45 years old. "It was so sudden," Micheál recalled. "When it's unexpected and it's just a complete freak accident, it really sort of messes with your mind, whether you believe in fate or not. It can send you for a bit of a head spin, and so you just latch on to the tiny little memories, whether it's her laugh or her energy in the room or her cooking. I do have...

Meet Jack (Micheál Richardson). He wants to work in the arts, but in the absence of talent, he's had to build what career he can around putting on loss-making exhibitions in his girlfriend's art gallery. Now that they're splitting up, she wants to bring this arrangement to a close and sell the venue. Presumably this will be a problem for a lot of actual artists, but we don't meet them or learn about why their work matters. All we get is Jack's colossal sulk. It isn't fair, he complains. Won't she please, please give him a bit of time to come up with the money so he can buy it himself? Though unconvinced by this prospect, she agrees. So now he has to make money fast. How can he do this? His first thought is to find something of his dad's that he can sell.

Exhibitors are anticipating a blockbuster opening this Thursday, even with caps on seating capacity, for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet after a sizable turnout for paid previews last weekend.
Warner Bros’ international spy thriller starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh played on more than 500 screens.
The distributor imposed a worldwide block on figures for the previews, which will be folded into the opening weekends in about 70 markets, but exhibitors’ feedback was highly positive.

‘Made in Italy.’
Madman Entertainment’s father-and-son comedy Made in Italy and Icon’s Mel Gibson starrer Force of Nature launched reasonably well last weekend but neither could match the market leader, Studiocanal’s Unhinged in its third frame.
Nonetheless exhibitors were encouraged by the uptick in ticket sales as proof that people are returning to cinemas in the lead-up to Warner Bros’ Tenet, which will have paid previews next weekend before the August 27 debut.

Made In Italy is a heart-warming father son story set in glorious Tuscany about bohemian London artist Robert (Liam Neeson), who returns to Italy with his estranged son Jack (Micheál Richardson) to make a quick sale of the house they inherited from his late wife. Neither expects to find the once beautiful villa in such a state of disrepair…. Renovations go badly, with father and son soon finding themselves at odds. Robert’s comical lack of DIY experience leads him to seek help from some colourful locals including the no nonsense Kate (Lindsay Duncan), an ex-pat making her living selling villas who quickly captures his attention. While the Hollywood studios continue to keep their tentpoles locked up till most American cinemas reopen, indie distributors are releasing a handful of smaller movies with big stars in supporting roles this week.
Can’t wait to see Robert Pattinson in “Tenet”? Well, you can always catch him in the festival-anointed imperialist critique “Waiting for the Barbarians.” While the release date for “Dune” remains in question, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård leads the well-reviewed Scandinavian drama “Out Stealing Horses,” about a widower’s return to the country. And before Liam Neeson returns to action-hero mode with “Honest Thief,” you can watch him playing opposite real-life son Micheál Richardson in “Made in Italy.”
Ok, those pairings probably aren’t for the same potential audiences at all, but it’s still nice to see versatile actors’ more serious work finding its way to streaming. And not all the week’s movies are minor.

There’s an indisputable emotional force at the core of this story about an estranged father (Liam Neeson) and son (Micheál Richardson) who travel together to Tuscany to sell a house that neither has seen since the car-crash death of the man’s wife. Made in Italy has nothing to do with the tragic 2009 loss of Neeson’s actress wife, Natasha Richardson, and the mother of Micheál, who took the Richardson name to pay tribute to the British actress. Still, the mutual grief and abiding love felt by the Irish actor,...

To call Made in Italy a comedy (as it has been billed) is misleading as it is essentially a story of loss and the coming to terms with and ultimately overcoming that loss. Yet, while there are some lighthearted elements to the film, the dramatic core of the film is what gives it the heft and resonance that makes it an above average tale of a father and son reconnecting through the oddest of circumstances.
Jack (Michael Richardson) is the estranged son of once prolific and renowned artist Robert (Liam Neeson). But, when Jack finds himself in need of funds to purchase the art gallery that he currently runs he must reconnect with his father to repair and sell the family’s Italian villa which is now only an echo of its former glory following the death of Robert’s wife and Jack’s mother. Ultimately though, the house – and...

There’s a melancholic and very real-life current to the idea of Liam Neeson and his son Micheál Richardson starring as an estranged father and son grappling with the long-ago death of their wife and mother in actor-turned-writer/director James D’Arcy’s earnest melodrama “Made in Italy.” Richardson is the son of Neeson’s late wife Natasha Richardson, who died terribly and too soon after a skiing accident in 2009. “Made in Italy” recasts this off-screen tragedy as a sort of backdrop to frame a tearjerker about the mending of multigenerational wounds.
Unfortunately, . Even the shimmering Italian countryside can’t rescue “Made in Italy” from banality, and a pat premise that leaves no room for irreverence or the unexpected.
Jack (Richardson) is a floundering mid-20something, the recently divorced manager of an art gallery. It all seems like the makings of a cushy dream gig for a cash-strapped quarter-lifer, until his...

Early in “Made in Italy,” a cringingly syrupy tale of overdue bonding between an estranged father and his only offspring, someone describes Liam Neeson’s character as “a selfish prick.” Thus we learn, even before Neeson has made his entrance, that the Irish star will be playing the polar opposite of the all-caring and ultra-capable dad of his hit “Taken” franchise. Then again, no one would mistake firsttime writer-director James D’Arcy’s cliché-filled family melodrama as an extension of Neeson’s late-career reinvention as a badass action hero.
“Made in Italy” marks a return to earlier, mellower roles for Neeson, who plays Robert, a former toast-of-the-town, now-struggling London artist leading a carefree lifestyle. The actor makes his entrance looking unkempt, in urgent need of a shower and trim, barely able to remember his one-night-stand’s name. Was it Jennifer or Jessica? D’Arcy’s script offers a generic backstory as...

Tales of fathers and sons are nothing new to movies. It’s all in how you choose to tell this story. For some, it becomes a gritty drama. For others, it becomes a silly comedy. Often, a road trip is involved. Actor turned writer/director James D’Arcy manages to take a tiny bit of all of that, shake it up, and spit out something more than a bit heartwarming with Made in Italy, a mix of comedy and drama that features a winning performance from Liam Neeson. Hitting screens this week, it’ll put a smile on your face and almost assuredly make you long for a trip to Italy (though I’d settle for a trip anywhere these days. Literally anywhere). The film is a dramedy (of sorts), with the focus being on a strained father and son relationship. The latter is Jack (Micheál Richardson), who is seeking to...

It's been 11 years since Natasha Richardson passed away. In a new interview for Vanity Fair, Micheál Richardson speaks about his mother and looks back at her death. The actress died in 2009 after suffering a head injury while skiing. She was 45-years-old. Micheál was just 13-years-old at the time. "I think the pain was a little too overwhelming," her oldest son, now 25, recalls. "I think the mind is very powerful, and subconsciously, or unconsciously, it can protect you. That's what it did when she passed. I just pushed it aside and didn't want to deal with it." He then adds, "I don't, even still, think that I've fully comprehended it, and...

Best known around these parts for his roles in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Cloud Atlas, and Dunkirk, James D’Arcy has also appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Homeland, Broadchurch, and more. The actor will now be stepping behind the camera for his first directorial effort, Made in Italy.
Starring Liam Neeson, the drama tells the story of a father who must return to Italy with his son in order to sell a house that belonged to his late wife. While there, Neeson’s character deals with a colorful variety of characters which include Lindsay Duncan as a tough realtor. Meanwhile, his son falls into a budding romance with a local chef. For an actor who has enjoyed a renaissance in action filmmaking these last few years, it looks like Neeson is charting a bit of a different path with this drama and Ordinary Love from earlier this year.

"You can't remember her... but I can't forget." Oh my this looks wonderful. IFC Films has debuted the first official trailer for Made in Italy, marking the feature directorial debut of English actor James D'Arcy - who wrote and directed this. The film hasn't premiered at any film festivals, but it will be available to watch on all formats (drive-in + VOD) starting in August. Liam Neeson stars in Made in Italy as a London artist who returns to Tuscany, Italy with his estranged son, as played by Micheál Richardson, to sell the house they inherited from his late wife. The film's cast also includes Valeria Bilello, Lindsay Duncan, Marco Quaglial, Gian Marco Tavani, and Helena Antonio. This is much more humorous than expected, but it still looks like it has a great deal of honesty and heart as well. There's a fresh, modern vibe that meshes well with the offbeat comedy.
