David Prior's 2020 film "The Empty Man" opens with a prologue that could easily stand alone as one of the most chilling short films ever made. It's 1995, and two couples -- Paul (Aaron Poole) and Ruthie (Virginia Kull), Fiona (Jessica Matten) and Greg (Evan Jonigkeit) -- are hiking through the Ura Valley in Bhutan. After crossing an old, swaying suspension bridge across a yawning chasm, Paul hears a soft sound like someone blowing into an empty bottle. Curious, he wanders off across the mountaintop in search of the source of this sound. As the others watch, he slips through an unseen hole in the rocks and disappears, as though he was never there at all.
It's another twenty minutes before the title card of the movie appears, stylized as "The Em ty Man." By this point, all of the hikers are dead except for Paul, who is trapped in a different kind of hell.

Over and again throughout The Empty Man, we see characters sitting in the lotus position, cross-legged and attentive, a pose connoting receptivity. It is in the migration of this mindset from snowy Bhutan to small-town Missouri, muled from East to West by the unlucky occidental tourist who doubles as its title character, that David Prior’s film locates both its celestial sense of scale and a fine-grained gestural specificity. After literally stumbling into a cliffside cavern—the first unexpected plunge in a movie whose characters constantly find themselves either on shaky ground or descending into a darkness of their own volition—Paul (Aaron Poole) becomes transfixed by a skeletal figure whose meditative posture he adopts, seemingly permanently and much to the bewilderment of his fellow backpackers. Dragged back to the surface, he has become a husk, limbs locked and rapidly atrophying, staring out at the world with eyes wide shut.

As an optimist that believes theatrical exhibition will survive, I look forward to the day when David Prior’s The Empty Man is introduced by a genre geek at an upcoming cult screening, perhaps Weird Wednesdays at the Alamo Drafthouse. The Empty Man is a curious creation, arriving as a B-movie compromise from Disney for beleaguered theaters while the studio ships its A-level movies like Pixar’s Soul to Disney+. This picture, with a 137-minute running time, was seemingly plucked from the limbo of the pre-Disney Fox vault, and although Disney has changed the name of the studio in February, they didn’t even spare the expense to swap out the 20th Century Fox logo and presenting credit on the Dcp sent to theaters.

The Empty Man, a supernatural horror film, has become a surprise straggler in a shrunken pandemic-era lineup of films still actually headed to theaters… and it’s coming sooner rather than later, as evidenced by 20th Century Studios’ release of the trailer.
James Badge Dale headlines the horror flick, which adapts The Empty Man comic book series from Boom! Studios created by esteemed writer Cullen Bunn with art by Vanesa R. Del Rey. The film also serves as the feature directorial debut of David Prior, who worked off an adaptation screenplay he wrote, bringing nearly two decades’ worth of experience filming shorts and documentaries, notably shorts connected to director David Fincher’s 2011 version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Familiar summoned supernatural urban legend creature concepts from genre offerings such as the remake-set Candyman and The Slender Man will obviously come to mind once the trailer for The Empty Man establishes its premise.

Move over Bloody Mary and Candyman.
Disney just dropped the trailer for “The Empty Man” — a mystical, horrifying entity that is summoned if you find an empty bottle on a bridge, blow into it and think of him. On the first night, you hear him. On the second night, you see him.
“And on the third night,” a teen asks his creepy young friend who wishes to summon him. “Well on the third night he finds you.”
That’s the setup for “The Empty Man,” a horror film based on the Boom! Studios graphic novels that opens this month. James Badge Dale plays a retired cop who investigates a group of teens in a Midwestern town who try to summon The Empty Man, only for locals to mysteriously disappear and put other peoples’ lives in danger.
David Prior directs the film based on a screenplay he wrote based on Cullen Bunn’s graphic novel.

"You can hear him, can't you? Squirming his way into your thoughts." Surprise! 20th Century Studios has released an official trailer for a supernatural horror movie The Empty Man, set for release next weekend (in one week). This is the first bit of marketing we've seen for this movie, which is still getting a nationwide theatrical release despite every other studio movie being pulled from (theatrical release) on the schedule. On the trail of a missing girl, an ex-cop comes across a secret group that's attempting to summon a terrifying supernatural entity. The locals believe it is the work of an urban legend known as "The Empty Man". The horror thriller film stars James Badge Dale, Marin Ireland, Stephen Root, Ron Canada, Robert Aramayo, Joel Courtney, and Sasha Frolova. The long-in-the-works “Snowpiercer” television series will live to see another day. TBS has announced it is reviving the dropped TNT adaptation of Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 science-fiction action film of the same name. The series stars Jennifer Connelly opposite “Hamilton” and “Blindspotting” breakout Daveed Diggs. In a sign of confidence, TBS has renewed “Snowpiercer” for a second season. The show’s debut run will kickoff next year.
“Snowpiercer” has been in development for four years. The series was originally announced in 2015 with “Sarah Connor Chronicles” creator Josh Friedman attached as showrunner. TNT picked up the pilot in November 2016 but the project got stalled over creative differences between the network and Friedman. The showrunner left the series just as TNT announced in January 2018 it was picking up “Snowpiercer” straight to series. “Orphan Black” co-creator Graeme Manson replaced Friedman, but the hire led to drama as Friedman publicly bashed Manson for taking over without consulting him first.

Molly Shannon as Emily Dickinson in Wild Nights With Emily. Courtesy of Greenwich Entertainment.
Molly Shannon is spot-on in the serio-comic Wild Nights With Emily, a completely different take on the personal life of poet Emily Dickinson, portraying her as a sharp-witted woman in a lifelong romantic relationship with her sister-in-law Susan, played by Susan Ziegler. This is not how we usually think of the reclusive poet.
Writer/director Madeleine Olnek drew on Dickinson’s own personal letters to craft a film portrait of Dickinson that is strongly feminist and Lgbtq but also just plain fun and unexpectedly entertaining. The key to that is Molly Shannon. Shannon runs with the idea with comic glee. What a tremendous breath of fresh air this is. Usually, period pieces or biopics of figures such as Emily Dickinson, they tend to be rather dry. Then, there’s Wild Nights with Emily, which takes a far more lighthearted route. In fact, this is basically a dramedy, which you’d never expect based on the premise. That’s what makes the film really work, too. It’s not a movie that’s stuffy or antiseptic in any way. It’s clever, witty, and brimming with life. Hitting theaters this weekend, it’s a really pleasant surprise and a real showcase for both its filmmaker as well as its star. The movie is a period piece, one that’s actually a mix of comedy and drama, which is pretty rare. Taking from her private letters, this work presents Emily Dickinson (Molly Shannon) not as a recluse, but instead the way she actually was,...

Kevin Reilly has addressed the showrunner changes behind TNT’s long-gestating sci-fi drama Snowpiercer. The chief creative officer of Turner Entertainment, who is also president of TNT, said the Jennifer Connelly-fronted drama should soon see the light of day and that the network is “just playing with the timing of when it airs.”
He also addressed the showrunner changes at the show, which is produced by ITV-backed Tomorrow Studios, Turner’s Studio T, along with Cj Entertainment. This is after things got ugly between former showrunner Josh Friedman, who was replaced by Orphan Black’s Graeme Mason.
Reilly admitted the situation got “very strange.”

Turner boss Kevin Reilly addressed the troubled production of TNT’s upcoming “Snowpiercer” adaptation during the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday.
The adaptation of the Bong Joon Ho’s 2014 film was picked up more than a year ago, but has been derailed by behind scenes the drama, including director and showrunner changes. The upcoming series still does not have a premiere date, nor has it shown any footage.
“We had a pilot that was really promising with some creative people behind it,” Reilly said Monday. “In that case it was a filmmaker who hadn’t really done television before; mounting a series was a different order.”

Josh Friedman wrote the pilot and was set to serve as showrunner, but was replaced by “Orphan Black” co-creator Graeme Manson in February, a decision the network attributed to creative differences.

Netflix has boarded “Snowpiercer,” a TV series adaptation of South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s hit 2013 feature film. The series will premiere on TNT in the U.S. in 2019, while Netflix will carry the show outside America and China.

Co-produced by Tomorrow Studios, Turner’s Studio T, and Korea’s Cj Entertainment, the series is executive produced by Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, as well as Scott Derrickson and Matthew O’Connor. The producing staff behind the original film — Bong, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Choi Doo-ho — have also joined the television adaptation as co-executive producers. Netflix has boarded two upcoming drama series, TNT’s futuristic action thriller Snowpiercer, starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs, and Bravo’s anthology Dirty John, headlined by Connie Britton and Eric Bana. The Internet network is taking international distribution for both shows under its co-licensing model.
In a deal with ITV Studios Global Entertainment, Netflix will premiere Snowpiercer, co-produced by Tomorrow Studios and Studio T, globally outside of the U.S. and China in 2019.
Netflix will carry internationally Dirty John, produced by Universal Cable Productions in association with Los Angeles Times Studios and Atlas Entertainment.
Snowpiercer, based on the acclaimed 2013 movie by Bong Joon-ho, was originally a pilot, which was picked up to series by TNT, while Dirty John received a two-season, straight-to-series order from Bravo earlier this year.
Under the co-licensing model, Netflix is collaborating with U.S. studios on series that air on other linear or digital networks in the U.

The “Snowpiercer” series at TNT has found its new director.
James Hawes has boarded the drama series as co-executive producer and director, Variety has learned exclusively, and will oversee reshoots on the show’s pilot.
Hawes joins the show less than two weeks after the pilot’s original director, Scott Derrickson, announced he would not return for the reshoots. Derrickson claimed that the decision was due to the “radically different vision” of the series’ new showrunner, Graeme Manson, from that of original showrunner and series creator Josh Friedman, who left the show in January.
“The 72-page Snowpiercer TV pilot script by @Josh_Friedman is the best I’ve ever read. The feature-length pilot I made from that script may be my best work. The new showrunner has a radically different vision for the show. I am forgoing my option to direct the extreme reshoots,” Derrickson tweeted on June 29.

‘Snowpiercer’ Director Refuses To Return For Reshoots Over Showrunner’s “Radically Different Vision”
Scott Derrickson, who directed the Snowpiercer pilot, is refusing to return for reshoots over the TNT series’ vision under its new showrunner Graeme Mason.
“The 72-page Snowpiercer TV pilot script by @Josh_Friedman is the best I’ve ever read, Derrickson tweeted Friday. The feature-length pilot I made from that script may be my best work. The new showrunner has a radically different vision for the show. I am forgoing my option to direct the extreme reshoots.”
Friedman exited Snowpiercer as executive producer and showrunner in January and was replaced by Orphan Black co-creator Mason. Creative differences were blamed for Friedman’s split with the show.
Derrickson is known for directing the features Doctor Strange and The Day The Earth Stood Still, among others.

Madeleine Olnek’s movies may be an acquired taste, but the woman knows how to write a catchy premise. Her three feature films — all madcap comedies with absurdist leanings — include lesbian aliens looking for love, lesbian hustlers picking up women outside Talbot’s — and now, lesbian Emily Dickinson traipsing across her Amherst lawn after a tryst with her sister-in-law, her petticoats flung about her head. That’s the premise of “Wild Nights With Emily,” and to say that they just don’t make movies like this anymore would be grossly inaccurate: It’s hard to imagine anyone making this movie other than Olnek.
Using Dickinson’s letters and poems (with the permission from Harvard University Press), “Wild Nights With Emily” paints a much sunnier portrait of the poet than that of the reclusive spinster terrified of publication. Instead, the film imagines a lively woman forced to hide a lifelong love...

The TV adaptation of Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer has been given the go-ahead at TNT with Jennifer Connelly heading up the cast.
The recent movie adaptation by Bong Joon Ho’s 2013 film starred Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Go Ah-sung, John Hurt, and Ed Harris. It is a remarkable film and, astonishingly, has never been released in the UK.
The movie takes place aboard the globe-spanning Snowpiercer train which holds the last remnants of humanity after an attempt at climate engineering in order to stop global warming has unintentionally created a new ice age.
Set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, the series will focus on the remnants of humanity, who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually-moving train that circles the globe. As it does, issues of class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival are raised.

One of the most disturbing and engrossing movies of the 2010s, Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer is finding new life as a TV series on TNT.
Back in 2016, TNT ordered a pilot episode based on Joon Ho's film (itself based on Jacques Lobabout's Le Transperceneige) about a constantly moving train holding humanity's last survivors in a frozen apocalypse. Now, as reported by Variety and numerous other outlets, TNT has officially green-lit the project to series.
While we'll have to wait and see how many episodes the series will receive in its first season, TNT's executive vice president of original programming, Sarah Aubrey, had this to say about the new addition to the network's slate:
“I’m a personal fan of Bong Joon Ho’s epic film, and jumped at the chance to honor his original vision, yet expand upon the world and characters with a diverse, award-winning cast. Science fiction...
