Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” is not only his most-watched Netflix movie to date — with 52.4 million views over its first four weeks on the streamer — but the historical drama has also boosted viewership for his other films on the service.
Netflix tells Variety that eyeballs on Perry’s four other Netflix films increased by more than 45% since “The Six Triple Eight” began streaming on Dec. 20. Plus, the film reached the Top 10 in more than 85 countries, the most of any film he’s made for the streamer.
It stands to reason that viewership numbers like these were what Netflix and Perry had in mind when the two parties entered into a multi-year first-look film deal in 2023. Perry, famous for his volume as a producer, has also turned the titles around swiftly compared to other overall creators at Netflix. His deal expanded last year to include series like “Beauty in Black,...

The Six Triple Eight delivers the quality and emotion that is expected of a Tyler Perry story. It touches upon the forgotten accomplishments of the unsung heroes of the 6888th Battalion of the Women’s Army Corps - the first of its kind to ever serve overseas. The movie is all about these women who were brought together to organize the delivery of thousands upon thousands of untouched mail and parcels of soldiers and their families from home during the Great War.
Witness the replay of history where 855 black women come together as they overcome unwarranted racism, obstruction, and vilification. All the while, their service brings relief to thousands of households in the US as they await their beloveds who are sacrificing their lives on the other side of the Atlantic.
The Diary of a Mad Black Woman actor (and here director) brought together a perfectly balanced ensemble of actors to tell us his narrative.

Tyler Perry's 2024 war movie has achieved a new Netflix viewership record for the filmmaker. As a prolific director, actor, producer, and writer, the current list of Tyler Perry movies on Netflix is extensive. Perry is arguably best known for the Madea franchise, a character Perry created and has portrayed across numerous projects. Perry is also known for his House of Payne series that aired for 11 seasons on TBS, during which Madea made several appearances.
Beyond many of his movies being available to stream on Netflix, Perry has directed several Netflix original movies in recent years. This includes A Madea Homecoming, the drama A Jazzman's Blues, and the legal thriller Mea Culpa. He did not direct Netflix's satirical and Academy Award-nominated film Don't Look Up, but he did star in it as television co-host Jack Bremmer. According to Gayle King, her friend Oprah Winfrey wasn’t done with the surprises for her birthday just yet.
Ahead of her “actual birthday,” Gayle received a surprise party from Oprah, which special friends and family members attended.
That initial surprise nearly caused Gayle a heart attack as she wasn’t expecting what she walked into.
The event featured celebrity guests, including Stephen Colbert, Katy Perry, and Sherri Shepherd, whom Gayle recently called out on her talk show.
Meanwhile, Gayle’s CBS Mornings co-stars also surprised her, as they had one of her favorite groups serenade her on television.
If that wasn’t enough, Oprah had a special guest drop by for Gayle’s official birthday celebration.

The Six Triple Eight is about the previously overlooked accomplishments of a team of Black women, and it's a great reminder to watch a similar Oscar-nominated movie. The Six Triple Eight follows the women's battalion unofficially charged with sorting and delivering over 17 million pieces of undelivered mail to soldiers and their loved ones during WWII. Many of the greatest war movies of all time focus on the action on the front lines, but there are many excellent films about other lesser-known efforts. The Six Triple Eight is based on a true story with assistance from the real women involved.
The Six Triple Eight stars Kerry Washington and Ebony Obsidian, with Susan Sarandon briefly appearing as Eleanor Roosevelt. The ending of The Six Triple Eight took some historical liberties but credited each woman involved, including featuring one of the characters' real-life counterparts. The Six Triple Eight director Tyler Perry reveals the real Lena Derriecott King's reaction to seeing the movie. King was one of the 855 women in the 6888th battalion, an all-Black and all-female military unit that served overseas during World War II. The 6888th battalion sorted through 17 million pieces of mail that had been backlogged for years in less than 90 days. During The Six Triple Eight's ending, the real King appears via footage filmed when she was 99 years old. She passed away in January 2024 at the age of 100.
While speaking with Today, Perry explained that he showed King a rough copy of the movie before she passed away and that she "loved it." He was impressed by her vivid recall of her experiences during World War II. Perry described how deeply moved she was to see her story, and the story of her peers, finally being told. In addition...

When it comes to period pieces that chronicle real-life incidents, characterization becomes much more significant—for quite obvious reasons, as there needs to be a resemblance between the person in real life and their on-screen portrayal. Director Tyler Perry’s war drama The Six Triple Eight, which revolves around the real-life heroics of the titular battalion of all-Black female soldiers during the Second World War, presented the bitter reality of existing racial prejudice in the armed forces. As the movie introduced a number of historical figures while bringing the unsung war heroes to life, needless to say a strong ensemble cast was essential to do justice to their silver screen counterparts. Thankfully, the strength of The Six Triple Eight is showcased through the performance of its cast, stacked with some prolific actors from contemporary media.

Critics have never been especially reliable supporters of Tyler Perry. The creator of the comedic Madea franchise, Perry began his career as a relatively unknown playwright. After adapting one of his plays, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, he rocketed into mainstream success and quickly became a prominent figure within Hollywood. He has since contributed to dozens of movies and TV shows as an actor, creator, director, writer, or producer. Perry's work has proven divisive, as many of his lowest-rated movies on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer have impressed audiences:

A new release this month on Netflix has been getting mixed reviews but it’s one we should all watch. That’s despite our rating the movie as one to miss when we gave you the three best new Netflix movies to watch (and two to skip) in December 2024. As a spoiler, the reason we used to skip The Six Triple Eight wasn’t that it’s not a good movie, it was more about the late December timing of the release.
The Six Triple Eight was released in selected cinemas in early December and became available on Netflix on Friday, December 20. It has a strong cast and relates an important story set in World War II. That's part of the reason why it should be a must-watch.
Before I explain more about why, let’s get back to that strong cast. You’ll see some top stars, including Oprah Winfrey,...

The Six Triple Eight may be inspired by Lena Derriecott King's true-life wartime experience, but the Netflix drama took certain liberties to tell it.
Released on December 20 and directed by Tyler Perry, The Six Triple Eight follows young Lena Derriecott King (Ebony Obsidian), a member of the only all-Black all-female battalion who were sent overseas to tackle a major World War II problem, an impossible backlog of undelivered letters.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson for Wbgr-fm on December 19th, reviewing “The Six Triple Eight” a World War II story written and directed by Tyler Perry. Streaming on Netflix beginning December 20th.
Kerry Washington is the real-life Lt Col Charity Adams, the no-nonsense leader of the Six Triple Eight (6888) Postal Battalion, the group that unstuck a backlog of several million letters for the troops and the home front, a vital service of morale for both ends of that era’s only means of communication. Although they were segregated, their battalion was the only black/woman of color unit to serve in Europe during the war, and in this based-on-truth story they are represented by real-life Lena Derriecourt King (Ebony Obsidian) and representative soldiers like Johnnie Mae (Shandice Shantay), but they all served honorably.

I must commend Tyler Perry. Out of the many films about World War II, he chose one so foreign to most of us that it almost seems entirely unbelievable. Perry’s latest feature isn’t a hoopla of major battles and violent sequences. It tells the untold story about the U.S. Army’s 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, another history lesson that's been buried long enough. The Six Triple Eight is about the first and only Women’s Army Corp unit of color that served overseas in Europe in WWII, a tale long overdue even if it is extremely rough to get through.

It highlights their mission to clear mail backlogs in Europe while overcoming racism, sexism, and the challenges of wartime.

Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” (2024) is a biopic dramatization of the American 6888th Battalion. They were the only Women’s army corps of color that served during the Second World War. Their extraordinary service has gone unremarked, just as they had been during their lifetimes. The film commemorates their tireless commitment to duty in the face of constant denigration and mockery, never letting it dent their spirit.

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for The Six Triple Eight.
Netflix's The Six Triple Eight is based on an inspiring true story that culminates in a powerful ending. The Tyler Perry-directed movie tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a battalion consisting entirely of all Black women during World War II. The Six Triple Eight's cast stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the first Black woman to be an officer in the Women's Army Corps, and the commanding officer of the 6888th Battalion.
During the war, an excessive backlog of mail occurred, as there were not enough personnel to manage the millions of pieces of mail being sent to and from the front lines. This initially overlooked problem became a significant issue as American soldiers during World War II were not receiving letters from their loved ones and their loved ones were not receiving letters from soldiers.

Movies have been telling stories about World War II since before some history books say World War II even started. What’s more, we’ve never stopped, not for one solitary second. That’s partly because it was arguably the most important historical event in the last 100 years. It’s also because we really, really need to explain to new generations why we should never, ever let fascists rule a country ever again.
But it’s also because there are still, to this day, real stories from WWII that have not been properly told. In some cases, like this year’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” it’s because the information was only recently declassified. In others, like Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight,” it’s because heroic tales of Black soldiers were swept under the rug by racist a-holes who either minimized or completely ignored their rightful place in history.

Tyler Perry's World War II historical drama The Six Triple Eight features an all-star cast of Black actors who brought a remarkable true story to life. The Six Triple Eight follows the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only predominantly Black battalion of the Women's Army Corps that served overseas in World War II. The 6888th served primarily in England and France sorting mail that had been neglected in the fray of the war. The battalion was faced with thousands of letters that needed sorting and delivering, and they finished their task in half the time they were allotted, just three months.
The Six Triple Eight makes a strong case to be considered one of Tyler Perry's best non-Madea movies, and it's largely because of its talented cast. With stars like Kerry Washington and Ebony Obsidian heading up the ensemble cast, The Six Triple Eight is well-equipped to handle...

Although actor and director Tyler Perry is best-known for the hilarious Madea movies, he recently put out a new war film called The Six Triple Eight, which explores an aspect of World War II history that few know about. Perry's career first began on-stage in the late 1990s. Before becoming a highly influential and lucrative filmmaker, Perry wrote, produced, and starred in a number of plays which were later adapted to the big screen, including I Can Do Bad All By Myself and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Through these projects, he became famous for his character, Madea.
In the intervening years, Perry has expanded his repertoire beyond his iconic character. In the early 2000s, he starred in Tyler Perry's House of Payne, which ran for six seasons. He also delved into more dramatic projects, including the political drama, The Oval on BET. Perry has also been known to...

“The Six Triple Eight” is a war movie directed by Tyler Perry starring Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, and Dean Norris.
Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” attempts to shed light on a little-known chapter of American military history. The film centers on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas during World War II.
Set against the backdrop of a war-torn nation, the movie follows 855 African American women tasked with clearing a three-year backlog of 17 million letters destined for U.S. soldiers. Led by Major Charity Adams, portrayed by Kerry Washington, the battalion completes its mission in record time, ostensibly boosting troop morale.
The cast boasts notable names, including Oprah Winfrey as Mary McLeod Bethune, Susan Sarandon as Eleanor Roosevelt, and Sam Waterston as President Franklin D. Roosevelt. While the performances are competent, they struggle to elevate characters that often feel generic and underdeveloped.

After a limited theaterical run, The Six Triple Eight is coming home to Netflix on November 20. Based on the real-life women of the 6888th Battalion in World War 2 (as reported by Kevin M. Hymel in his groundbreaking article), Tyler Perry's new movie explores how the only unit made up entirely of Black women faced insurmountable odds in order to accomplish their duty. That mission was a unique one: to sort through years of postal backlog in order to dispatch over 17 million pieces of mail between soldiders and their loved ones.
While The Six Triple Eight follows a number of characters in the Battalion, it centers primarily on two real-life women: Lena Derriecott King and Major Charity Adams (Kerry Washington). The former joined the unit after her boyfriend was killed in action, while the latter was tasked with leading the unit in what first felt like punishment. The movie also stars Milauna Jackson,...

Netflix offers a fascinating history lesson in The Six Triple Eight, which follows the only American battalion comprised of Black women during World War II. These women were tasked with sorting through an endless backlog of wartime mail so that soldiers could communicate with their loved ones — a mission that may have begun as grunt work but proves to be inspirational on several fronts. Based on the article by Kevin M. Hymel, the movie is written and directed by Tyler Perry (a far cry from the Madea movies that made him a household name) and serves as his third project in 2024.
The Six Triple Eight stars Kerry Washington (who also helped produce the movie) as Major Charity Adams, the leader of the 688th Battalion. Her perspective on the team she's been asked to lead shifts when she meets newcomer Lena Derriecott King (Ebony Obsidian), who joined the army after her...

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion is a spectacular but frequently forgotten part of World War II history. As the only Women’s Army Corps unit of colour to deploy overseas, they were assigned the vital role of sorting mail, which went beyond simple logistics.
(Some say sorting letters was the initial form of emotional assistance.) Their task was more than just carrying packages; it was about bolstering the soldiers’ spirits, providing a lifeline to their loved ones, and, in many ways, supporting the very fabric of morale at one of history’s darkest times.
However, this unit’s story has been pushed to the outskirts of historical history, overshadowed by more traditional tales of bravery. The irony is not lost: while bullets flew and bombs exploded, these women demonstrated their type of strength, which included patience and perseverance in the face of systematic negligence.

Add Tyler Perry to the list of filmmakers not interested in directing a superhero movie.
“You’ve got to have a passion for it. I’m not a big superhero person,” the prolific multi-hyphenate told me at the Los Angeles premiere of his new WWII epic, “The Six Triple Eight.” “They’ve never been something that I enjoy.”
However, Perry said, “my son enjoys them, so we watch them together.”
Perry has created dozens of movie, television and stage projects in his decades-spanning career. His latest, “The Six Triple Eight,” is arguably his largest scale production yet. The Netflix film, starring Kerry Washington with a cameo by Oprah Winfrey, tells the story of the only all-Black female U.S. Army unit to serve overseas during WWII.

Writer-director Tyler Perry takes a step up as a versatile filmmaker in bringing Netflix’s inspiring World War II-set true story The Six Triple Eight to the screen to tell the largely untold story of the Women’s Army Corps Unit of Color and their heroic and important achievement during the war in Europe in 1945. This unit was made up of more than 855 women of color, mostly Black women who endured racism, sexism, grueling weather and conditions far beneath their male counterparts, only to become uncelebrated heroes after being deployed to England, then France in order to make sure the letters from and back to home for soldiers landed in the right hands.

The story of the 6888th Battalion, Aka the “Six Triple Eight,” was unfortunately destined to be overlooked in the annals of World War II history. The predominantly Black unit of the Women’s Army Corps (Wac) was responsible for overseeing the logistical nightmare of sorting and delivering 17 million pieces of backlogged mail. Though the mission might carry the patina of busy work, anyone with a working heart can understand how general morale might be improved by reliable communication between soldiers and the home front. The 855 members of the Six Triple Eight ultimately accomplished their daunting six-month task in just three months, much to the surprise and resentment of Army leaders who weren’t keen about Black leadership, or the specter of desegregation, in the armed forces.

Tyler Perry’s new Netflix film, The Six Triple Eight, casts a long-overdue spotlight on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve in the United States Army during World War II. The film, which premieres on December 20, follows the inspirational story of these 855 women who processed millions of backlogged letters and supplies to bolster the morale of soldiers overseas while experiencing discrimination and segregation both at home and abroad.
The film centers on the narrative of Charity Adams, the highest-ranking African-American woman in the US Army. Adams, played by Kerry Washington, guides the Battalion through their critical task, which has been largely neglected in military and African-American history.
Some of the project’s contributors find personal meaning in it. Rapper Big Sean went to the Los Angeles premiere with his mother to honor a personal connection: his grandmother was a member of the 6888th Battalion.

Kerry Washington is stepping out for the premiere of her new Netflix movie!
The 47-year-old actress joined co-star Oprah Winfrey and director Tyler Perry at the premiere of The Six Triple Eight on Tuesday (December 3) held at The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood in Los Angeles.
Fellow cast members in attendance included Ebony Obsidian, Gregg Sulkin, Moriah Brown, Jay Reeves, Pepi Sonuga, Sarah Jeffery, Shanice Shantay, Kylie Jefferson, and Milauna Jackson along with producer Nicole Avant.
The day before, Kerry received a very prestigious honor!
The new movie is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII.
