Berlin, Aug 31 (Ians) Discovering the talent of Erling Haaland might elevate someone to heroic status in football. For Christoph Freund, the discovery of the Norwegian standout isn’t the only reason Bayern Munich took notice.
In eight years, Freund transformed Rb Salzburg into one of Europe’s prime talent factories. He’s credited with finding stars like Sadio Mane from Senegal, former Liverpool striker Naby Keita, Japanese International Takumi Minamino, and French international Dayot Upamecano, reports Xinhua.
Starting this Friday, the 46-year-old will step into his new role as Bayern Munich’s sporting director, succeeding the departed Hasan Salihamidzic. He has inked a deal that lasts until 2027.
Freund’s arrival fills a significant gap for Bayern. The team hasn’t seen a homegrown talent rise to its first team since Bavarian favorite Thomas Muller in 2009.
While there’s no guarantee Freund will uncover another Haaland, the bar is set high.

Berlin, Aug 19 (Ians) A brace from Leroy Sane and a goal from new arrival Harry Kane paved the way for Bayern Munich’s 4-0 victory over Werder Bremen at the curtain raiser of the 2023-2024 Bundesliga campaign on Saturday.
The German record champions had a fairytale start as Kane’s chipped-through ball allowed Sane to finish off a counterattack in the fourth minute clinically, reports Xinhua.
The Green Whites remained unfazed and thought they had restored parity five minutes later, but Niclas Fullkrug’s header following a free-kick from Marvin Ducksch was ruled offside.
Bayern controlled possession and should have added another goal to its lead, but neither Jamal Musiala’s nor Noussair Mazraoui’s promising long-range effort found the back of the net.
Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka had his hands full of work, as he had to defuse Leon Goretzka’s hammer from the distance and Kim Min-jae’s...

Monster detective Ma Seok-do is back! After smashing his way through Philippines and the Korean box office, he is back in Korea to smash the living daylights out of the bad guys in “The Roundup” director Lee Sang-yong’s followup to the ninth highest grossing Korean film of all time.

After the terrific negative turns by both Yoon Kye-sang and Son Suk-ku in the first two parts respectively, the responsibility of being at the brunt of Ma Dong-seok’s punches falls on Lee Joon-hyuk, who plays the big baddie Joo Seong-cheol this time round. Lee Beom-soo and Kim Min-jae make up the detective team as Jang Tae-soo and Kim Man-jae respectively.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 4 (Ians) South Korea and Brazil, the knockout round opponents at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup, are keeping a low profile on Saturday, two days before their showdown in Qatar.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 27 (Ians) South Korea coach Paulo Bento has admitted he is frustrated at the loss of experienced defender Kim Min-Jae through injury during his side’s 0-0 draw against Uruguay. Kim won’t be available for their vital game in FIFA World Cup against Ghana on Monday night.
Bento admitted that Kim was an important loss as he brings a lot of experience to his side. “He has played every game in the Champions League for Napoli,” he said.
The injury to the defender means that South Korea found it more difficult to play the ball out of defense against Uruguay and as such, they dropped deeper against the South Americans.
Bento has come in for criticism for that tactic back in South Korea, but in fairness, as well as losing Kim Min-Jae, Bento’s plans were also hampered by Heung Min-Son’s lack of match fitness.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 24 (Ians) Spain’s 7-0 win over Costa Rica is one of the biggest wins in the recent World Cup finals and given the way that teams from what were traditionally not considered footballing nations have improved drastically in recent years, wins such as Spain’s are getting rarer and rarer.
The increasing number of players from Asia and Africa now playing in European leagues and the money invested in their domestic competitions means sides are now much better prepared, both physically and tactically.
However, that wasn’t always the case, as a look back at some of the biggest historical results in the World Cup finals shows.
The heaviest-ever defeat in the World Cup finals came in Spain in 1982 when Hungary defeated El Salvador 10-1 in their opening group game, with four of the goals coming in 11 chaotic second-half minutes as El Salvador fell apart.
To their credit,...

When Yeon Sang-ho wrote “Train to Busan,” zombie movies were simply unheard of among South Korean audiences. Skeptical of the subgenre’s commercial appeal, the director went along with his producers at Next Entertainment World on promoting it as “a survival story of Koreans infected by a human virus of sort.”
“When filming it, I had ideas of other stories in that world, in the post-apocalypse, but I didn’t think I’d have another opportunity to make such a specific genre film, especially not at this scale,” Yeon told Variety.
To Yeon’s surprise, “Train to Busan” was both a critical and commercial success. It grossed $98.5 million, $2.1 million of that from the U.S. and Canada, and became among the first Korean films picked up by VOD and streaming services including Netflix and Shudder. In South Korea, more than 11 million people watched the movie in theaters.
