Director Ali Abbasi had Sebastian Stan undergo an ominous transformation for his forthcoming film The Apprentice, in which the actor will star a young Donald Trump. As proven by the first-look photos from the movie, set to premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the process was a success — Stan’s Trump looks exactly like the kind of person who would be sued by the Department of Justice for violating the Fair Housing Act.

Sebastian Stan is no stranger to governmental subterfuge on screen. In fact, a decade ago he was causing international incidents in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, caught up in a conspiracy that went all the way to the top. But for his next role – firmly away from the MCU – he’s playing a guy who was at the very top for four long years. Yes, in Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, Stan will be playing a young Donald Trump – and the film has just unveiled a first-look image, which you can see above.
We know – it’s upsetting to see someone as likeable on-screen as Sebastian Stan playing someone as [Redacted] as Donald J. Trump. Frankly, we’d sooner be mates with his cannibalistic killer from 2022’s Fresh. Starring alongside Stan in The Apprentice are Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn (also seen in the image), with Tenet’s Martin Donovan as the elder Fred Trump,...

The first-look image of Sebastian Stan as a young, pre-tv star and pre-president Donald Trump in buzzy upcoming biopic “The Apprentice” has been revealed.
Ali Abbasi’s feature — which has just been announced as part of the 2024 Cannes main competition — charts Trump’s ascent to power through what is described as a “Faustian deal” with the influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn (seen in the still being portrayed by Jeremy Strong). As the synopsis reads, “‘The Apprentice’ is a dive into the underbelly of the American empire.”
The hot button film, written by Gabe Sherman and likely to cause a stir on both sides of the political fence, also stars Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Martin Donovan as Fred Trump Sr.
Producers include Daniel Bekerman for Scythia Films (Canada), Jacob Jarek for Profile Pictures (Denmark), Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde for Tailored Films (Ireland), Abbasi and Louis Tisne...

It’s official: Donald Trump — or at least a fictionalized version of him — is heading to Cannes.
The prestigious French film festival unveiled its 2024 official film selection Thursday in Paris, and Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice was among the titles revealed for the event’s main competition.
The biographical drama stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and explores his career as an aspiring real estate tycoon in the New York City of the 1970s and 1980s. The film is described as a mentor-protégé narrative that documents the start of an American dynasty and tackles themes including power, corruption and deception. It delves into the relationship between Trump and Roy Cohn, the New York City prosecutor oft-remembered for working with Sen. Joseph McCarthy during the Second Red Scare.

Armageddon Time director James Gray’s got a tip for aspiring filmmakers: If you want to look good as a director, work with gifted actors, like Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong.
“I’m a big fan of great actors because what they do is tend to make you look considerably more capable than you actually are,” Gray joked during a panel for his Focus Features film at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event. “You write a line and you sit at home and you have the computer and the yellow legal pad and the thing and you go, ‘Uh, is that a good line? I don’t know if it’s a good line.’ And then you go on the set and all of a sudden you say, ‘He made it work.’ ”

Director James Gray based his new movie "Armageddon Time" on a true story about his youth growing up in Queens in 1980 in a Jewish family. In the new film, Paul (Banks Repeta) is a teenage boy who dreams of being an artist in a family that mostly doesn't understand him. When he gets in trouble at public school alongside his friend Johnny (Jaylin Webb), who's black, his parents (played by Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway) transfer him to an elite private school. As Paul's school tries to indoctrinate him into an upper class, capitalist mindset, his grandfather (Anthony Hopkins) tries to remind him to be a good person. All of this takes place with Ronald Reagan's election looming in the backdrop. The movie's title even comes from a Reagan quote: "We might be the generation that sees Armageddon" the then-presidential candidate said during a 1979 interview. Armageddon in the New...

Rating: 4.5/5.0
Paul Graff (Banks Repeta) is a teenage boy in 1980 whose middle class Jewish family is struggling with recession and angst, with his mother Esther (Anne Hathaway) and father Irving (Jeremy Strong) trying to keep body and soul together, with help from Aaron (Anthony Hopkins), Paul’s grandfather and family patriarch. He befriends a poverty-stricken African American named Johnny (Jaylin Webb), who is a co-conspirator in some bad boy antics. When Paul’s parents sends him to private school because of his behavior, its benefactor is none other than Fred Trump, father of Donald. As the 1980 election year rolls on, the election of Ronald Reagan becomes one more background warning for Paul and his family.

Kenneth Branagh’s childhood was transformed by the Troubles in Northern Ireland, Mike Mills had very eccentric parents and Cameron Crowe was a teenage rock critic — and we know these things because all three directors have made films that drew upon their own childhoods. And now it’s James Gray’s turn to offer his own look back with “Armageddon Time,” which premiered to a rousing ovation in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.
And what does the film tell us about the young Gray? For starters, he was a dreamer, he was a brat, he didn’t understand the privileges he was born into and he went on his own path. In other words, he was the kind of person who just might grow up to make...

James Gray is reminiscing about his childhood in Queens in the first trailer for his semi-autobiographical film “Armageddon Time.”
Inspired by the director’s upbringing in 1980s Queens, the film loosely follows Gray’s experiences as a student at the Kew-Forest School in New York City — where Donald Trump also attended. Starring newcomer Banks Repeta as Paul Graff, “Armageddon Time” also includes Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway as Paul’s parents Irving and Esther, and Anthony Hopkins as his grandfather. Additional cast members include Jaylin Webb, Ryan Sell, Tovah Feldshuh and John Diehl as Fred Trump.
In May, Hathaway and Gray broke into tears as the film received a seven-minute standing ovation following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Viewers were also surprised to see Jessica Chastain appear in a small cameo as Donald Trump’s sister, Maryanne.

James Gray’s hotly anticipated Armageddon Time promised much: a heady cast, led by Anthony Hopkins as the paterfamilias of a dysfunctional Jewish family, an analysis of the formation and inexorable rise of Donald Trump and a look at the ever-present issues of racism, religious intolerance and integration in the USA. Gray set himself a daunting task and it seems curmudgeonly to point out the director’s failings, but ultimately the film promised a lot and delivers too little.

Is it Oscar time for James Gray? The director’s new film, “Armageddon Time,” is one of the few competition titles debuting at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, so it is also one of the few likely candidates that may have an impact on the Oscar race.
While Gray’s previous work like “The Immigrant,” “The Lost City of Z,” and “Ad Astra” tends to do better with critics than audiences, this new one may end up pleasing both groups. “Armageddon Time” is a memoir-ish drama, set in Queens, New York during the 1980s, seen through the eyes of a sixth-grader named Paul, played by Banks Repeta. His parents are Emmy-winner Jeremy Strong and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway, and his grandparents are two-time Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins and four-time Tony-nominee Tovah Feldshuh. Weirdly enough, Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, figures in the story, and is played by John Diehl. Recent Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain...

James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” a deeply personal look at how the auteur became the auteur we, or at least the French, came to know and love, debuted to warm applause on Thursday. However, the film’s problematic depiction of racial inequalities in the Reagan era may turn off awards voters. Plus, Gray has hardly been a major Oscar contender in the past.
Following the likes of “Roma” (2018) from Alfonso Cuarón and “Belfast” (2021) from Kenneth Branagh, Gray is the latest auteur to bring the story of his childhood to the screen. Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival the day after “Top Gun: Maverick” is no easy feat. But the Cannes crowd ate it up, giving it a seven-minute standing ovation, a signal that international members of AMPAS may find aspects to embrace, notably the performances of Anthony Hopkins, Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway.

“Armageddon Time” may be a film about James Gray’s childhood in Queens, New York, but the writer-director told a Cannes press conference on Friday that he very deliberately used that setting to address ways in which today’s America is broken.
“I think we’re in serious trouble today, don’t you?” said Gray, whose film stars Banks Repeta as Paul Graff, a version of the director as a sixth-grader, and Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway as his parents. “What happened? How’d we get here, where there’s, like, two people who own everything and a bunch of authoritarians trying to take over the planet?”
The system of inequality, he added, extends to Hollywood and to the plight of filmmakers and artists today. “The market is God,” he said. “If you tell someone under 20 ‘you’re a sellout,’ they think it means they have no more tickets left.

James Gray’s autobiographical new film “Armageddon Time” was already one of the more hotly anticipated titles to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, but audiences received an additional surprise in the form of an unexpected cameo. Jessica Chastain, hot off her Oscar win for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” makes an appearance in the film as Maryanne Trump, the sister of former President Donald Trump.
Chastain appears in one brief scene, speaking to children at the prestigious Kew-Forest School in New York City. She gives a speech steeped in conservative rhetoric, lecturing the wealthy students on the value of hard work and ambition. She is accompanied by Fred Trump, Donald’s father, who reappears at the end of the film. The scene was inspired by a real speech that Maryanne Trump gave at the school when Gray was a student there.

Following up his most ambitious film yet, the glorious space opera Ad Astra, James Gray is setting his sights a bit smaller for his next film. Armageddon Time is inspired by his mid-80s upbringing in Queens’ Kew-Forest School, and also involves its principal as well as board member Fred Trump. Led by Robert De Niro, Cate Blanchett, Donald Sutherland, Oscar Isaac, and Anne Hathaway, the director said last summer that The 400 Blows and Amarcord were key influences on the project.

Mary Trump, the niece of Donald Trump and his siblings, claiming that she was defrauded out of the settlement of her share of her grandfather Fred Trump’s business holdings.
The lawsuit was filed on Thursday in the Supreme Court of the State of New York. It also names as defendants the president’s sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, and the estate of Robert Trump, the president’s brother who died last summer.
“Mary’s father, and their brother, Fred Trump Jr., died in 1981 when Mary was just sixteen years old,” the lawsuit states. “Upon his death, Mary inherited valuable minority interests in the family business. Donald, Maryanne, and Robert committed to watch over her interests as fiduciaries. They lied. Rather than protect Mary’s interests, they designed and carried out a complex scheme to siphon funds away from her interests, conceal their grift, and deceive her about the true value of what she had inherited.

Donald Trump’s attack on Bill Maher, apparently triggered by the HBO host’s mock eulogy of the president on his show last week, is only his latest swipe at the comedian.
“Watched @billmaher last week for the first time in a long time. He’s totally Shot, looks terrible, exhausted, gaunt, and weak. If there was ever a good reason for no shutdown, check out this jerk. He never had much going for him, but whatever he did have is missing in action!”

Update: In her interview with ABC News, Mary Trump defended one of the headline-grabbing claims in her new book, that her uncle Donald Trump hired a friend to take the Sat as way to improve his chances of getting into the University of Pennsylvania.
In a portion of the interview shown on Good Morning America on Wednesday, George Stephanopoulos asked her how she knows that given that it happened in 1964.
“I’ve been told this by people in my family,” she said. “I am absolutely confident that it’s true. I am happy finally to be able to speak about it. I also know that it is not the Joe Shapiro we have been focusing on.”
She identified Shapiro as the friend who Trump paid to take the test. But as details of the book were reported last week, Shapiro’s widow, Pam Shriver, posted a video that cast doubt on the claims,...

While everything in the filmmaking world, as in most industries, is up in the air right now, if all goes according to plan, James Gray will embark on the production of his next film Armageddon Time early next year. A return to smaller-scale filmmaking after his space epic Ad Astra, the film is inspired by his mid-80s upbringing in Queens’ Kew-Forest School, and also involves its principal as well as board member Fred Trump. Led by Robert De Niro, Cate Blanchett, Donald Sutherland, Oscar Isaac, and Anne Hathaway, Focus Features recently picked up the worldwide rights for around $15 million and now we have new details––including two classics that are serving as inspiration.

A New York Supreme Court judge has lifted a restraining order that prevented Mary Trump from publicizing her new tell-all book about her uncle, President Donald Trump, and his family.
Robert Trump, the president’s brother, had sought a court action to stop the publication of the book, Too Much And Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man. He claimed that Mary Trump was bound by a confidentiality agreement that was included in the 2001 settlement of the estate of Fred Trump Sr., the family patriarch.
But Judge Hal Greenwald wrote that the confidentiality clause was too broad, concluding that it had “too many words, with too many meanings. The cost of the litigation that was settled should have been finalized with more specifics, more clarity, if the current situation was even comprehended, at the time the Agreement was signed.”
Simon & Schuster is due to release the book on Tuesday.

As reporters rushed to post many of the juicy anecdotes and scorching analysis from Mary Trump’s new book this past week, they might have missed that the memoir also is a media critique.
In Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, set to be published Tuesday, the niece of President Donald Trump still seems a bit surprised that, through his entire career, her uncle, whether by design or impulse, has used distraction to his advantage.
“The media failed to notice that not one member of Donald’s family, apart from his children, his son in law and his current wife, said a word in support of him during the entire campaign,” she writes.

Donald Trump’s niece Mary Trump writes in her new book that the coronavirus crisis and economic downturn have only brought out the worst in the president, someone who was unprepared for the moment and who spent a lifetime lying and even cheating to get ahead.
The book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, was obtained by the Associated Press and a number of other media outlets on Tuesday, is set to be published on July 14 by Simon & Schuster, even though the Trump family has sought to stop its release in court.
The president’s “ability to control unfavorable situations by lying, spinning, and obfuscating has diminished to the point of impotence in the midst of the tragedies we are currently facing,” Mary Trump writes, according to the AP.

Simon & Schuster is moving up the publication date of Mary Trump’s tell-all book about President Donald Trump’s family from July 28 to July 14, and the publisher is releasing new details about its content in the meantime.
The decision to move up the date of Too Much And Never Enough: How My Family Created The World’s Most Dangerous Man, was based on “high demand and extraordinary interest,” according to a spokesperson for the publisher.
An appellate judge last week lifted a temporary restraining order on the publisher that, at least temporarily, had blocked its release. Robert Trump, the president’s brother, is still seeking a preliminary injunction, with a hearing scheduled for July 10, but the publisher says that copies have already been printed and distributed to book sellers. Moving up the date likely makes it more difficult to enforce any attempt to block its release.

Updated: Simon & Schuster can move forward with plans to publish a tell-all book by President Donald Trump’s niece Mary Trump, as an appellate judge overturned a lower court ruling that had temporarily halted publication.
Her book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, is scheduled to be released on July 28.
The judge, Alan D. Scheinkman, still left in place a restraining order against Mary Trump, but wrote that the order should not include Simon & Schuster as it was not a party to her non-disclosure agreement.

More than a year since word emerged that James Gray would, post-Ad Astra, make a return to small-scale filmmaking with Armageddon Time, reportedly a fictionalization of his mid-80s upbringing in Queens’ Kew-Forest School, its principal, and board member Fred Trump. From Deadline now comes word that the film, which “explores friendship and loyalty against the backdrop of an America poised to elect Ronald Reagan,” is moving forward with the not-inconsiderable cast of Robert De Niro, Cate Blanchett, Donald Sutherland, Oscar Isaac, and Anne Hathaway.
No notice of who’s playing who; much more substantial are his descriptions of the project to Deadline. Calling it an opposite to Ad Astra‘s “vast, lonely and dark void,” he says:
“I’m anxious to make something that is very much about people, about human emotions and interactions between people, and I want it to be filled with warmth and tenderness. In some sense,...

Rt Features has pulled off quite a feat. The producer of “Call Me By Your Name” and “The Witch” has three films debuting in Cannes Film Festival’s official selection, a nearly unheard-of accomplishment.
“It’s a dream,” said Rodrigo Teixeira, the production company’s founder. “We shot three films last year and all three films are premiering in Cannes.”
The movies in question include Danielle Lessovitz’s “Port Authority,” a story of sexual identity set in New York’s “ballroom” scene; Karim Aïnouz’s “The Invisible Life Of Eurídice Gusmão,” a drama about two sisters that spans three decades; and Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse,” a black-and-white horror film starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe.
That’s not the only way that Teixeira made a splash at this year’s festival. He also announced plans to make James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” a coming-of-age drama that will feature Donald and Fred Trump as characters.

We still don’t know what exactly to expect from James Gray’s sci-fi drama “Ad Astra” when it premieres September 20, but we do know what Gray’s lining up next. Variety reports that the “Two Lovers” and “The Immigrant” filmmaker is set to write and direct “Armageddon Time,” an autobiographical drama about growing up in mid-1980s Queens, New York. But wait, there’s more: “Fred Trump, the Queens-based real estate developer who sired Donald Trump, and the current president will appear as characters, although the events will unfold long before there was ever a Trump in the White House.”
Rt Features, the production company responsible for “Ad Astra,” is also working with Gray on this next venture. “It’s a personal story for James,” the company’s Rodrigo Teixeira told Variety. “You have the whole world of the Trumps dealing with that school and the students who go to that school.

Hardly one to waste an opportunity, James Gray has already lined up his post-Ad Astra (coming this fall! maybe!) picture. Whatever can be said for how that oft-delayed project turns out, it’s seemingly given incentive to go somewhere familiar: Variety tell us the film, Armageddon Time, concerns his mid-80s upbringing in Queens’ Kew-Forest School, its principal, and board member Fred Trump, whose own son (you’ll have to look that up) is a fellow alum.
Aside from a production start early next year and the involvement of companies you don’t care about, details are currently a bit scarce. One may, if inclined, nevertheless draw a couple of lines towards Armageddon Time: knowing Gray’s Fellini love would put one in mind of that director’s autobiographical I Vitelloni, to which he paid a particular homage in The Lost City of Z; and he’d earned headlines last year when he,...

In a dubious/devious practice that would probably make both Donald and Fred Trump proud, in the 1930s, New York City began a gentrification process known as “redlining.” Any neighborhood whose Black and/or Hispanic population had grown to house 5-10% of the overall residencies was labeled a “declining community.” By the ‘70s, these so-called slums were often torn down, sometimes a result of raging building fires. A concept called “urban renewal” was formed. James Baldwin (writer of “If Beale Street Could Talk”) doesn’t beat around the bush with political vocabulary, “[Urban renewal] means negro removal,” plain and simple.

If Toys ‘R’ Us really are going to get back into business, then they’re gonna have to find a new spokesperson, because Geoffrey the Giraffe has gone off the rails …
The retail giant shuttered hundreds of stores over the summer but a planned bankruptcy auction this week to sell off assets was canceled as a group of investors are working to try and revive the toy chain.
Jimmy Kimmel celebrated the potential return of Toys ‘R’ Us by having Geoffrey the Giraffe on his late-night show Thursday, but it was a good job the kids had gone to bed as the long-necked mascot dropped F-bombs and swore like a sailor.

Trevor Noah was pretend-horrified Wednesday by a New York Times story about the amount of money Donald Trump reportedly received from his father.
“I am devastated… This exposes Trump’s origin story as a lie,” said Noah. “This is like finding out that Superman was actually born in Cleveland, and he can’t even fly.”
According to a Times investigation published Tuesday, Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump actually gave him hundreds of millions of dollars, from Donald Trump’s childhood well into his 40s. This included three trust funds, cash gifts, and bankrolling Donald’s companies, as well as help with complex tax dodges.

When the New York Times editors hit publish on yesterday’s exhaustive report detailing how Fred Trump fraudulently funneled millions to his son — President Donald J. Trump — Showtime’s cameras were rolling. A holdover from Liz Garbus’ “The Fourth Estate” — a four part series documenting the New York Times covering President Trump’s first year in office that aired this spring — director Jenny Carchman helmed a crew that continued to follow the reporters working on this particular story about Trump’s tax avoidance, which took nearly two years to report.
The Times story by Russ Buettner, Susanne Craig and David Barstow calls into question President Trump’s image as a self-made billionaire, revealing that he received the equivalent today of $413 million from his father. Worse yet for the President, the Times reported that the money transfers were “dubious tax schemes” that sometimes involved “outright fraud.”

President Donald Trump this morning tweet-trashed the Nyt report claiming his fortune was amassed helping his parents “dodge taxes” in the 90’s with “instances of outright fraud,” noting his self-made-man con got him elected, so what’s the news here.
“The Failing New York Times did something I have never seen done before. They used the concept of “time value of money” in doing a very old, boring and often told hit piece on me,” Trump tweeted this morning, having been too busy last night trashing his Supreme Court nominee’s accuser to get around to responding to the Nyt report published late Tuesday afternoon.
“Added up, this means that 97% of their stories on me are bad,” Trump snarked, adding that Nyt “[n]ever recovered from bad election call!”
Trump’s tweet is a Cliff Notes version of the statement his press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued Tuesday night which, like Trump’s tweet,...
