Queen Sugar‘s reign at Own isn’t over just yet. The drama has been renewed for a fifth season, just one day after its Season 4 finale.

“I’m thrilled to further explore the beauty, pain and triumph of this African-American family, with hopes that their story will continue to resonate with audiences who see themselves in the Bordelons,” said series creator Ava DuVernay. “It’s a real honor to create this work with Warner Horizon and Own as their support is rock-solid and wonderful.”

‘Queen Sugar’: Five Directors & Two Guest Stars Added For Season 4 Of Own Drama

Exclusive: Ahead of next week’s Season 4 premiere of Queen Sugar, the Own drama has announced five more directors and a pair of guest stars for the upcoming run.

Lacey Duke, C. Fitz, Pratibha Parmar, Deborah Kampmeier and Stacey Muhammad are set as helmers for S4, bringing the total number of female filmmakers to make their U.S. scripted television directing debuts on the series to 32.

Meanwhile, Cree Summer (A Different World) and Bryan Terrell Clark (Hamilton) are set to appear during the fourth season of the series from creator/executive producer Ava DuVernay. Summer will play Octavia Laurent, a professor and fiery past love of Nova Bordelon (Rutina Wesley) who surprises Nova while in Atlanta during her cross-country book tour. Clark is set as the new love interest for Darla (Bianca Lawson).

David Alan Grier Joins ‘Queen Sugar’ As Guest Star
Actor and comedian David Alan Grier let out a little secret on Saturday. The Native Son star and In Living Color alum is set to guest star on Season 4 of Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar.

He took to Twitter and posted an image of a Queen Sugar script with the caption “Shhhhhhhhhhh!!!!” Deadline has confirmed that he will be a guest star but details about his role are being kept under wraps. The drama series is currently in production in New Orleans and is set to return to Own on June 12.

Grier will join recently announced recurring guest stars Erica Tazel and Kendall Clark. Walter Perez was upped as a series regular. ‘Queen Sugar’ Sets Season 4 Premiere Date, Announces Cast Additions
Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar will return for its fourth season on Own Wednesday, June 12 with Erica Tazel and Kendall Clark joining as recurring guest stars and Walter Perez upped to series regular.

The new season also continues the series’ use of an all-female directing team, a “creative initiative” established in the show’s first season by creator/exec producer DuVernay. Season 4 directors will include Cheryl Dunye, who will also serve as producing director, Carmen Marrón, Numa Perrier, Heidi Saman, Bola Ogun and Tchaiko Omawale.

The series is exec produced by Oprah Winfrey and Warner Horizon Scripted Television. Season 3 is available on Hulu.

‘Queen Sugar’ Unveils Final Set Of Directors For All-Female-Helmed Season 3 Of Oprah Winfrey-Ava DuVernay Drama
Exclusive: One week after Queen Sugar‘s two-part Season 3 debut on Own, the drama executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay has announced the final set of directors for the all-female-helmed series and widened its inclusion scope with new castings.

The new directors are Nijla Mu’min, Christina Choe, Ayoka Chenzira and Rachel Raimist, along with the return of Queen Sugar Season 3 showrunner Kat Candler. They join previously announced Season 3 helmers DeMane Davis, Patricia Cardoso, Shaz Bennett, Maria Govan and Lauren Wolkstein.

'Queen Sugar' Season Premiere Delivers 2.1 Million Viewers for Own

The third season premiere of Own drama series Queen Sugar delivered 2.1 million viewers and ranked as Tuesday night's #1 cable telecast in Own's key demographic of women 25-54 (L+3). The acclaimed drama from award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay and executive producer Oprah Winfrey was also the night's #1 telecast across all of broadcast and cable for African-American women.

In addition, the season premiere of Queen Sugar ranked as the #1 most social show on Twitter and Facebook in all of cable among all dayparts (non-sports) for the day.
