The Great Gatsby musical, the highest grossing show in Off-Broadway theater Paper Mill Playhouse’s history, will be coming to Broadway this spring.
The musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s acclaimed novel will debut at The Broadway Theatre on April 25, the show’s lead producer Chunsoo Shin announced on Tuesday. Directed by Marc Bruni, Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada are set to reprise their Off-Broadway roles as Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, with previews beginning March 29.
“I am passionate about producing this show because it provides a modern audience with the true essence of idealism that is expressed eloquently in the novel and now on stage,” said Shin in a statement. “The Great Gatsby is a masterpiece that grows and changes as it’s experienced by each new generation, in every culture, and people — and yet, still maintains its uniqueness, with its fascinating characters that burst with vitality.

Broadway actor Chris Peluso, known for his work in productions such as Mamma Mia and Wicked, died Wednesday, August 15, his family confirmed to Playbill. He was 40.
A cause of death has not been revealed. His sudden passing came a year after he announced he would be stepping away from acting to seek treatment for a schizoaffective disorder, Playbill reported.
An alum of the University of Michigan Theatre Department, Peluso became known as a respected understudy on Broadway, first covering The Balladeer in the 2004 Tony-winning revival of Assassins, as Louis and Nicolas in Elton John’s Lestat , and all three leading male roles in Beautiful The Carole King Musical.
He played Sky in the 2008 Broadway production of Mamma Mia. He also starred and covered the role of Fiyero in the touring company of Wicked, and he starred in Off Broadway’s The Glorious Ones.

Changes are coming to the Greek underworld — at least as it appears on Broadway. Australian pop musician Betty Who and Tony nominee Phillip Boykin are set to take over the leading roles of Persephone and Hades, respectively, in the hit musical, Hadestown, starting Sept. 5.
The complex, fraught relationship between Persephone and Hades provides one of the two main storylines in Hadestown. In Greek mythology, Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and Hades (technically her uncle) is allowed to abduct her and make her Queen of the Underworld. In Hadestown,...

According to our combined predictions as of this writing, the five who are expected to receive Best Actress in a Musical nominations at this year’s Tony Awards are Victoria Clark (“Kimberly Akimbo”), Annaleigh Ashford (“Sweeney Todd”), Micaela Diamond (“Parade”), Sara Bareilles (“Into the Woods”), and Patina Miller (“Into the Woods”). However, there is a contender I think deserves to be in the conversation much more, and that would be Adrianna Hicks (“Some Like It Hot”).
In this stage musical adaptation of Billy Wilder‘s 1959 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, Hicks plays Sugar Kane, the lead singer of an all-girl band. While venturing out to San Diego, she develops a friendship with the band’s newest musicians who happen to be a pair of men disguising themselves as women to escape the mob. In the early days of the Academy’s animated feature Oscar, there were questions as to whether enough films would qualify each year for the award to be given. Not anymore! This year sees a record number of contenders across a wide variety of genres, styles and audiences, from serious, adult-targeted films (like “Charlotte” and “Eternal Spring”) to boffo offerings from Hollywood’s top toon studios — and that doesn’t even count such anime franchise sensations as “One Piece Film: Red” and “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which didn’t submit but further illustrate the vitality of the form.

When crafting the world of good luck and bad luck for “Luck,” director Peggy Holmes actually started by doing a lot of research into the title subject. “We had a development team do research on luck, icons, colors, numbers, all around the world. But there’s a very clear rule that we discovered in doing the research which is luck is random. You don’t know when it’s coming and you can’t create it,” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
All this research was given to the film’s production designer Fred Warter who came back with a concept that Holmes was immediately taken with. “The very first image he did for the movie was two worlds sitting on opposite sides of a coin. Good luck on top and bad luck on the bottom. His brain...

Luck was on director Peggy Holmes‘ side when the film Luck landed in her lap, a project about a young woman in the foster-care system looking for her happy ending.
Holmes spoke about all the layers that went into creating the world in which protagonist Sam Greenfield (Eva Noblezada) exists during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event, and what attracted her to the animated film that found a home at Apple.

“I was asked to take a look at this project and there were two things that I was really drawn to, and one was the idea that Sam was growing up in the foster-care system. I thought it could be a great opportunity to create an emotional story about someone with no family finding a forever family,” Holmes said.
“And then also, there was a leprechaun.

Almost one year ago, Reneé Rapp got her heart broken — and in a “really shitty way,” as she puts it. But instead of falling into despair, the “Sex Lives of College Girls” star immediately called her manager.
“I explained it to him like, ‘I feel it in my fingers that this is going to be the year that everything I have ever wanted to happen can happen,’” Rapp tells Variety over lattes in a cozy Toluca Lake coffee shop. “It was like getting out of that relationship made me confident.”
At first glance, it’s hard to imagine that the 22-year-old singer and actor could harbor any insecurities. She speaks with an unabashed openness from the start, discussing everything from her dating life (“I’ve had so many tiny failed relationships this year”) to the intricacies of her Zodiac sign with the familiarity of an old friend. She’s dressed casually,...

Few animated movies are as fun, wholesome, cute, charming, hilarious, and surprisingly green as Peggy Holmes’ Luck, a movie that I didn’t expect a whole lot from but ended up being one of my favorite animated projects of the year so far. Screenwriter Kiel Murray doesn’t add an original idea every single turn in this movie, and that’s perfectly okay. This movie has been getting a lot of negative attention for not being a game-changing piece of animation, but I...

The inaugural feature from Skydance Animation, an ambitious division of the production company that is being overseen by former Pixar bigwig John Lasseter, has finally arrived on Apple TV+.
“Luck” is the tale of a young girl named Sam (Eva Noblezada), who feels perpetually unlucky. She’s been a part of the foster care system for as long as she can remember, to the point where she has “aged out” of her foster home and is now rooting for a much younger orphan named Hazel to find her forever home. Of course, she thinks her luck might be changing when she encounters a talking Scottish cat (Simon Pegg) and follows him into the magical land of luck. Of course, nothing is what it seems and Sam could wind up turning both of their worlds upside down.

There’s a lot riding on “Luck,” the debut feature from Skydance Animation and Apple Original Films. If anyone deserves a sitcom, it’s Jo Koy. The definition of a working comic, the stand-up comedian tours constantly, hits all the late-night shows, and pumps out special after special, selling out theaters all the while. And yet, Koy has never been able to break out of his (presumably quite lucrative) rut. All he needs is that one big crossover star vehicle, a la Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) or Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), right? Right??

Well before you start stockpiling blender ingredients for a celebratory beverage, you’ve still got to keep them entertained in the hazy last couple of Summer weekends (naturally the temps are still soaring almost everywhere). So, that may warrant a multiplex trek for some matinee fare for them. If they’re leaning toward the animated features, then it’s almost certain they’ve caught up with the Minions (maybe more than once). And if the kiddos are very “pre-k” the PG-rated superhero slapstick of DC League Of Super-pets may be a tad overwhelming. Ah, but there is a PG alternative (very rare) opening this weekend. It’s the feature animated debut of a new “player” in the field, though a few familiar faces are behind the scenes. Like the film’s heroine,...

Inside the corny chaos of the going-back-home lark “Easter Sunday,” starring comedian Jo Koy, is the point that families are messy. Of course, one doesn’t need to belong to a big Filipino clan like the movie’s onscreen Valencias to grasp that, and it’s almost quaint how that message is articulated for us at the end as some fresh bit of wisdom when, since scene one, relatives in various states of bickering aggravation have been the comedy’s go-to note.
A more lasting takeaway from “Easter Sunday” about what’s messy has to do with vehicles for stand-ups trying to break into movies. Koy, who’s been packing arenas for years with his rabbity energy and humorous windows into family eccentricities and Filipino culture, seemed as natural a fit as any to get some of his act’s lasting characters into a movie. Steven Spielberg certainly thought so...

Filipino Americans receive welcome screen representation in stand-up comedian Jo Koy’s starring cinematic debut about a family holiday celebration. As well they should, since similar films have revolved around Jewish, Black, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Italian and families of virtually every other group you can imagine. It seems only fair that Easter Sunday should provide them the opportunity to take center stage in the sort of chaotic-family-gathering comedy that simultaneously inspires howls of recognition and cringes of embarrassment.
The film, directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, The Dukes of Hazzard), revolves around Koy’s character, Joe Valencia, a struggling L.A.-based actor who’s managed to score at least one success, becoming known for the catchphrase, “Let’s get this party started!” in a beer commercial that everyone seems to have seen. Joe is now up for a starring role in a sitcom,...

August is officially the last month of summer, but it’s also when schools start to reopen while others might take a vacation. Any movies hoping to make money this month are working against many other factors, which is why it’s become somewhat of a last resort for many studios. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
There have been more than a few blockbusters to open the month, including James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” and “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” but this August, there aren’t any franchises to be found, other than movies already in theaters, like “Thor: Love and Thunder” and Warner Bros’ weaker-than-expected “DC League of Super-Pets.” [sad trombone]

This robotically made animated tale leads a young woman to a secret world that will surprise no one
Another dismal, algorithmically produced digital animation here, evidently the first off the production line from a new US-Spanish company, Skydance Animation, which has the former Pixar chief John Lasseter as its creative head. Everything about this robotically made movie looks derivative and contrived; the videogame aesthetic is dull and the quirky high concept plays like a pound-shop knockoff of Inside Out and Soul.
Sam (voiced by Eva Noblezada) is an 18-year-old kid who has grown up in a quaintly imagined orphanage-slash-girls’-home in an identikit US city. She has been plagued by bad luck all her life, not merely in being an orphan (the backstory there is primly never mentioned) but in tiny little things such as bumping into objects and losing her keys – although this micro-level bad luck could also be called klutziness.

Full disclosure: I don’t believe in luck, but I do believe that “Luck” — the first feature-length toon from David Ellison-backed Skydance Animation — represents a force for good in the world. It’s not easy developing both a pipeline and a project that could compete with the Disneys and DreamWorks out there. While the new studio’s debut can’t touch “Toy Story,” it’s an auspicious start for a talented group of storytellers.
After Lasseter got involved, “Luck” changed direction — and directors — picking up choreographer-turned-helmer Peggy Holmes and shifting to a plot full of cute supporting characters (lilting leprechauns! dancing bunnies!). Still, the creative team never quite cracked their promising subject, settling on a plucky but unlucky 18-year-old orphan who travels to the source of both good and bad luck — a garish Willy Wonka-esque parallel world where most of the movie takes place — in order to collect...

Sam Greenfield is the unluckiest person on Earth, and she has been since the day she was born. It’s bad enough that Sam’s biological parents left her at the Summerland Home for Girls shortly after she came into this world, and that she’s about to age out of the program after going a full 18 years without finding a forever home. But a more banal sort of calamity seems to follow Sam on a day-to-day basis, as well: This poor girl can’t make a sandwich without dropping a slice of bread on the floor jelly-side down, take a shower without knocking over a broom that locks her in the bathroom, or shoot a lip sync video with her “little sister” Hazel without the set crashing down on top of her. Rotten luck essentially follows Sam with the same Rube Goldberg-inspired relentlessness that Death stalks the teens of the “Final Destination” franchise,...

Good fortune is a very real and quantifiable asset in the 3-D CG animated feature “Luck,” the first animated venture from Skydance Media – and the first project produced by disgraced industry figure John Lasseter since allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced in 2017.
Sam, a self-declared unlucky girl raised in foster care, doesn’t think of luck, or lack thereof, as a superstitious belief or as a placebo to explain the unexplainable events in our unpredictable day to day. For her, it’s the root cause of all her misfortune, big and small, including missing out on being adopted. Now that she has aged out of the system, her only desire is for her younger friend Hazel to find a forever home.
A longtime choreographer at Walt Disney Studios, Peggy Holmes directs this exceptionally crafted magical adventure. Despite having an emotional arc that becomes evident within its first few minutes, “Luck” registers...

Sam Greenfield (voiced by Hadestown’s Eva Noblezada) might just be the world’s unluckiest person. The 18-year-old protagonist of Apple TV+ and Skydance Animation’s wholesome film Luck is an expert in poor timing, unhappy accidents and minor disasters. (Sometimes major ones, too). Random objects fall on her head, she slips and trips, and almost everything she touches breaks. Despite her general misfortune, Sam is a perennial optimist — a woman who prefers to look on the brighter side.
Luck tells the story of how Sam momentarily comes into better fortunes, loses that opportunity and sets out to find it again. If Apple’s extensive marketing campaign has got you doing a double take, you aren’t alone. Luck is the kind of hopeful, detailed tale Pixar would release, but this is not a product of the animation behemoth — not really. It’s the brainchild of Skydance Animation,...

This August is a big month for returning favorites, both on television and in theaters. The month brings new seasons of favorites from last year, including Reservation Dogs and Industry. At IMAX theaters, nostalgic moviegoers can get a chance to catch E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Again. Even this month’s biggest debut, a Game of Thrones prequel, is kind of a return.
But, even apart from the dragons and bloodshed promised by a return to Westeros, there’s a lot to look forward to this month. Here are a...

In early 2020 while preparing to direct Luck, Skydance Animation’s first feature film, Peggy Holmes met with some unlikely consultants on the story. The lead character in Luck, an unlucky yet indomitable young woman named Sam, has grown up in foster care, and so Holmes interviewed kids with similar experiences in Ventura County, California, to better understand their perspective and help find the emotional core of Sam’s story. “We met with these young people and they shared their stories with us, and we were so incredibly moved by their positivity, their generosity, their never-give-up kind of attitude,” Holmes says. “These are people who have had some real bad luck in their lives. We wanted to honor that bravery.”

The trailer for Luck follows Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world. The first trailer dropped Wednesday and shows off the animated feature, which is from Apple Original Films and is the first produced by Skydance Animation.
Everything about Sam’s (voiced by Eva Noblezada) day goes wrong until she finds a lucky penny that turns things around — until she accidentally flushes it down the toilet. She realizes the lucky penny is connected to a mysterious black cat named Bob, voiced by Simon Pegg, whom she follows into the Land of Luck, which resembles a perfectly timed Rube Goldberg machine in which everything goes right — but humans are not allowed. At the bottom of the two-sided world is where all of the bad luck is sent.

An enthusiastic crowd took a sneak peek at Skydance Animation’s first feature length film, “Luck,” showcased as part of the Annecy International Animation Festival’s Work in Progress section on Tuesday.
The panel was composed of the film’s director Peggy Holmes, screenwriter Kiel Murray, producer David Eisenmann, director of animation Yuriko Senoo and VFX supervisor Javier Romero.
“Luck” tells the story of Sam Greenfield, probably the unluckiest girl in the world, who one day finds a lucky penny.
She decides she wants to give the penny to her best friend Hazel, but her bad luck means she loses the coin. Sam sets out to find a new one and, in her quest, she crosses the path of Bob, a lucky black cat, who inadvertently leads her to the Land of Luck.

Mulan was my childhood icon. After seeing her face and recognizing something similar in mine, I decided that I also wanted to cut my hair off in an act of 5-year-old defiance.
With my Papa’s nose hair trimmers, that was. And for a long time, Mulan was one of the very few characters I saw on TV and in magazines that looked like me. This confused me in a way because my own life was full of all different types of people who made my life feel wonderful. I wondered why I wasn’t watching more of their stories.
As I grew older and fell more in love with acting and the need to be a part of telling stories, I acclimated to a very small (yet whom I fiercely adored) list of actors that looked…. kinda like me. They were beacons of hope that made me think maybe one day,...
