After some confusion, Ridley Scott confirmed he’ll make his sci-fi pic “The Dog Stars“ (now starring Jacob Elordi instead of Paul Mescal) ahead of his Bee Gees biopic. And if Scott gets his way, he’ll shoot both projects this year. But why will fans of the disco-era supergroup need to wait a bit longer for that film to reach theaters?

IndieWire (via GQ) has the scoop there, and it comes down to dilly-dallying on the part of Paramount.

Fresh off the box office success of Nosferatu, a new take on a horror classic that itself was derived from a horror classic, you might be wondering what’s next from director Robert Eggers. Does he plan on bringing other classic monsters to the screen? Well, one thing we can say for sure is that you shouldn’t expect his take on Frankenstein.
On the show Conversations @ Curzon, Eggers recently spilled the beans that he actually did make a brief attempt to put his own spin on Frankenstein. Alas, it just wasn’t working out.
Eggers tells the show, “Sometimes you know you’ve got a dud. I’m super, super-excited for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. But when my son was born, I had an unconscious urge – I’m sure because of that – I started to try to do Frankenstein.”

Harrison Ford is one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, but the financiers on Blade Runner clearly weren’t paying attention because they had the unmitigated gall to question Ridley Scott’s choice to cast him in the leading role. Can you imagine questioning Harrison Ford? Or Ridley Scott, for that matter?
“Harrison Ford was not a star,” Scott told GQ. “He had just finished flying the Millennium Falcon in ‘Star Wars.’ I remember my financiers saying, ‘Who the f*** is Harrison Ford?’ And I said, ‘You’re going to find out.’ So Harry became my leading man.” Ford had just finished shooting Raiders of the Lost Ark at the time, and Steven Speilberg gave Scott the thumbs up when the director asked if he should hire the actor for Blade Runner.

Ridley Scott is meant to direct a biopic on the music icons the Bee Gees, but he revealed in an interview that he drove a hard bargain with the studio. So while it was previously reported the film would begin shooting early this year, the director now says disco fans will have to wait to put on their dancing shoes.
Scott said in an interview with GQ on Tuesday that Paramount, which released his most recent film “Gladiator II,” later “changed the goalposts” on his deal for the Bee Gees film (working title “You Should Be Dancing”). In turn, Scott instead will begin production on his film “The Dog Stars” for 20th Century Pictures first. “The Dog Stars” will start filming in April, and Scott hinted that the Bee Gees film could begin for Paramount by September.
“The deal — the studio changed the goalposts,” Scott said of the Paramount project.

Ridley Scott was originally slated to follow up Gladiator II with a biopic about the Bee Gees, the iconic musical group formed by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. However, Scott’s next project will instead be The Dog Stars. So, what happened? Turns out there has been some tension with Paramount Pictures, and Scott has been doing this long enough that he doesn’t have time for games, so he walked.
“The deal — the studio changed the goalposts,” Scott told GQ. “I said, ‘You can’t do that.’ They insisted. I said, ‘Well, I’m going to warn you, I will walk, because I will go on to the next movie.’ They didn’t believe me, and I did. I was being asked to go too far. And I said, ‘No. Next!’ They didn’t like my deal. So I said, I’ll move on. I’m expensive, but I’m f***ing good.

Ridley Scott revealed in a new interview with GQ magazine that his planned Bee Gees biopic at Paramount Pictures was set aside following some deal issues with the studio. Variety reported in February 2024 that Scott had boarded the movie, which GQ reports “was scheduled to begin shooting in early 2025” but has now hit a roadblock.
“The deal — the studio changed the goalposts,” Scott told the publication. “I said, ‘You can’t do that.’ They insisted. I said, ‘Well, I’m going to warn you, I will walk, because I will go on to the next movie.’ They didn’t believe me, and I did.”
Scott added that he expects to find common ground with Paramount on the deal and for the project to move forward sometime around September. In the meantime, the director has subbed in the post-apocalyptic thriller “The Dog Stars” for 20th Century as his next project to shoot in April.

2025 marks the 25th anniversary of director Mary Harron’s Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho (watch it Here), which has come to be known as a cult classic – and for a while, news reports made it seem that, as an anniversary gift, we’d be getting an American Psycho remake from director Luca Guadagnino, whose credits include Challengers, Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All, Queer, and the Suspiria remake. Guadagnino reportedly signed on to direct the film from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) back in October, and in December we heard that Austin Butler (Elvis) and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) were being considered for the lead role of Patrick Bateman, the character who was played by Christian Bale in Harron’s film. But then, Ellis said on his podcast that he thought the remake talk was “fake news” and that deals hadn’t even been secured with Guadagnino or Burns yet.

Universal Pictures is diving back into its classic monster tales. After the 2017 ‘Dark Universe’ plan didn’t pan out, they’re now focusing on standalone stories.
This shift has led to fresh takes on iconic characters like the Wolf Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Recently, insider DanielRPK shared an intriguing rumor on his Patreon. He suggests that Universal is working on a new ‘Frankenstein’ film.
In this version, a Black teenager is tragically shot by a police officer, and his mother brings him back to life.

Bret Easton Ellis Doubts Austin Butler’s Role in ‘American Psycho’ Remake: “Fake News” or Real Deal?
Last month, Variety reported that Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino’s new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s ‘American Psycho’ for Lionsgate. Although there were rumors about Jacob Elordi being cast as Patrick Bateman, Butler was chosen instead. Both Butler and Elordi have portrayed different versions of Elvis in movies by Sofia Coppola and Baz Luhrmann.
The film will feature a script by Scott Z. Burns and is not a remake of the 2000 movie, but a fresh take on Ellis’ novel.
Things have gotten infinitely more complicated now since Easton Ellis himself is disputing these new rumors.
On The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, the author of ‘American Psycho’ said that Austin Butler hasn’t actually signed on to play Patrick Bateman in the new movie, calling the reports “fake news.” He explained, “I have a feeling it’s fake news… Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman.

Ridley Scott’s next film loses Paul Mescal to The Beatles, and brings Jacob Elordi in to headline The Dog Stars instead.
During his press tour for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott revealed to Film Stories that a sci-fi project had been added to his upcoming slate, that was going to be a quick reunion with Paul Mescal. However, according to Variety, the project will no longer be a continuation of the working relationship between Gladiator 2 director and star because Mescal has reportedly left the project.
Mescal starred in Scott’s belated sequel to 2000’s Gladiator and in the wake of the movie’s release, his performance choices have been the subject of much discussion, positive and less so. Jacob Elordi Could Be Set To Replace Paul Mescal In Ridley Scott Post-Apocalyptic Thriller Dog Stars
It's almost a year to the day since we shared the news that Aussie actor Jacob Elordi, star of Saltburn and Priscilla, would be replacing Andrew Garfield in Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming Frankenstein movie. And now, in what is perilously close to becoming an annual tradition, today brings with it news that Elordi is set to step in once again to replace the lead in a revered auteur's next literary adaptation. Yes, per Variety's reporting, the in demand actor — soon to be seen in Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights with Margot Robbie — is being eyed to replace Paul Mescal in Sir Ridley Scott's post-apocalyptic thriller Dog Stars.
As you may recall, back in November we shared news that Gladiator II director-muse duo Scott and Mescal were planning to reteam on Dog Stars, an adaptation of Peter Heller's post-apocalyptic bestseller with a script hailing from The Revenant and...

The world is Jacob Elordi’s oyster after crushing his role as Felix Catton in Emerald Fennell’s sexy and psychotic thriller Saltburn and lining up projects like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, new episodes of Euphoria, and reteaming with Fennell for her adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Unafraid to pile his plate high with promising parts, Jacob Elordi is in talks to join the cast of Ridley Scott’s pandemic thriller The Dog Stars.
The Dog Stars hails from 20th Century Studios and is based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller. Initially, Scott was reteaming with Gladiator II star Paul Mescal for The God Stars, but scheduling conflicts with his part in Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology kept him from participating. Sources say Mescal plays Paul McCartney in Mendes’ upcoming film, making him essential to the project.

Author Bret Easton Ellis says the announced “American Psycho” reimagining isn’t real.
Ellis said during his eponymous podcast that announced remake’s director Luca Guadagnino and rumored lead actor Austin Butler are not contracted for the feature. Regardless, Ellis confirmed that he is in no way involved in the potential reboot, despite writing the novel it will be adapted from.
“American Psycho” was first brought to the screen in 2000 with Mary Harron co-writing and directing; Christian Bale starred. Guadagnino’s version, which is being billed as an entirely new adaptation of Ellis’ book, was announced in 2024 as a Lionsgate film with Scott Z. Burns adapting. Jacob Elordi is in early talks to lead The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller for 20th Century Studios, based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller, Deadline can confirm.
Elordi looks to step in for Scott’s Gladiator II star, Paul Mescal, who was forced to depart due to scheduling conflicts after being tapped to star in Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology, where he’s rumored to be playing Paul McCartney. Scott first hinted at the possibility of Mescal’s exit in a December conversation with filmmaker Christopher Nolan on Gladiator II.
Set in a near future where an unnamed pandemic has decimated American society, The Dog Stars will have Elordi playing Hig, a civilian pilot living a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a tough ex-marine. The two men couldn’t be more mismatched but depend on each other to fend off roaming invaders.

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has been a big success, but the director once considered remaking another iconic monster movie: Frankenstein.
During a recent interview with Curzon (Dax?), Eggers revealed that he started working on his own Frankenstein movie before calling it quits after just two weeks because, and I quote, it “sucked.“

There have been rumours that Andrew Garfield could be returning for Spider-Man 4, but the actor has denied them. “I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no,” Garfield told GQ UK of the Spider-Man 4 rumours. “But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.“

Given how successful No Way Home was ($1.9 billion), I’d wager that we will see Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire again, but I’d put my money on Avengers: Secret Wars over Spider-Man 4.

Beta Fiction Spain, the No. 1 independent distributor in the country this year thanks to a barn-storming €8.0 million ($8.3 million) box office gross from Arantxa Echevarría’s “Undercover,” is set to produce new films from Marcel Barrena and Dani de la Orden, directors of two other big 2024 Spanish breakouts: “El 47” and “A House in Flames.”
With Echevarría attached to direct biopic “Dolores,” Beta Fiction Spain now has in development movies by three of the five directors behind films nominated for Best Picture at Feb. 8’s Spanish Academy Goya Awards.
In all, Beta Fiction Spain releases look set to gross a total €15.2 million ($15.8 million) at Spanish theaters, a considerable achievement given it only launched in May 2022 and released just seven films in 2024, compared to the dozen or so titles it plans to open in Spain from 2025, its first full year of business.

Deadline reports that Apple TV+ has scooped up the rights to Bananas, a drama series from David O. Russell set to star Oscar Isaac and Ana de Armas. The project was the subject of a heated bidding war, but Apple took home the prize.
Russell is attached to direct the series from a script by Carolina Paiz (Narcos). Unfortunately, the plot is being kept under wraps, so that’s all we know about it. Russell will also executive produce alongside Isaac, de Armas, and Paiz.

“Better Man,” the Australian-made biopic inspired by the life of British pop star Robbie Williams, received a leading six nominations for the 2025 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) International Awards on Tuesday. That reinforced the Oz academy’s love affair with writer-director Michael Gracey‘s (“The Greatest Showman”) musical spectacular, in which Williams is transformed into a chimpanzee, after it garnered a record-breaking 16 nominations at Aacta’s local awards earlier this month. “Better Man” is nominated for Best Film alongside “The Brutalist,” which tied with six noms, as well as Denis Villeneuve‘s epic sequel “Dune: Part Two” and critical darlings “Anora” and “Emilia Pérez.”
This is the fourth year that the Aussie kudos have included categories for television, with FX’s “Shōgun” and “The Bear” leading with three nominations each.
