Judd Apatow has been tapped to host the DGA Awards once again, the guild announced Wednesday.

The 77th annual ceremony is set for February 8 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. This will mark Apatow’s sixth time hosting, previously getting the gig in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

“I’m shocked the DGA asked me back to host for a sixth time. I’m starting to think there’s no one else who will say yes,” Apatow joked in a statement.

Additionally, Beth McCarthy-Miller will serve as the Chair of the Awards for the fourth consecutive year, according to the guild.

In a statement of her own, she added: “I am proud to continue to serve as DGA Awards Chair to help celebrate the incredible talent of all our nominees. I look forward to a wonderful night paying tribute to the best of craft, and to welcoming Judd Apatow back to the podium as our amazing host.

The screenplays of A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing and The Wild Robot, as well as the source material from which they were drawn, are nominated for the USC Scripter Award for best film adaptation, and the teleplays for episodes of Baby Reindeer, Ripley, Say Nothing, Shōgun and Slow Horses, as well as the source material from which they were drawn, are nominated for the USC Scripter Award for best TV adaptation, the USC Libraries revealed on Wednesday.

The winners — which will be determined by a jury chaired by USC professor and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences vice president Howard Rodman, as were the nominations — will be announced at the 37th annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards ceremony, a black-tie affair in the Town & Gown ballroom on the campus of USC, on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The 2025 finalists for the USC Libraries Scripter Awards have been announced by the USC Libraries. The annual event is held in honor of the writers of the year’s most accomplished film and episodic series adaptations, as well as the authors of the works on which they are based.

For example, on the film side, recent Golden Globes Best Screenplay winner Peter Straughan is nominated alongside Robert Harris, the author of “Conclave.” The finalist can also be the same person on both ends, with “Baby Reindeer” creator/star Richard Gadd being nominated for adapting his play of the same name into the Emmy-winning hit Netflix series.

There’s no obvious 2025 Oscars frontrunner like last year’s “Oppenheimer” (Universal). This year, that studio’s blockbuster stage-to-screen musical “Wicked” will be one of 10 lauded frontrunners duking it out for Best Picture.

Another musical, the Spanish-language French Oscar entry “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix), is poised to dominate the delayed Oscar nominations announcement on January 23 with 12 nods, by my estimation, followed by papal thriller “Conclave” (Focus Features) with 10, and “The Brutalist” (A24), a post-World War II drama about an émigré architect (Adrien Brody) produced for under $10 million, with nine. All display the scale, scope, and ambition of a potential Oscar winner.

Based on the hit stage musical, “Wicked” should nab eight nominations and boasts more stateside support and a SAG Ensemble nod, as does “Emilia Pérez,” which also won five European Film Awards (including Best Film) and four Golden Globes including Best Comedy/Musical, and scored 11 BAFTA nominations to “Wicked’s” seven.

Sean Baker’s Anora leads the 2025 Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards nominations with five nods, including for best picture, best screenplay and best director, it was announced Monday.

Baker’s screwball comedy about a young sex worker’s romantic entanglement with the son of a Russian oligarch also earned a best female actor nod for Mikey Madison and a best supporting male actor nomination for Yuri Borisov.

It not a blockbuster MLK weekend but indies are out in force with The Brutalist continuing to surprise, The Substance adding theaters and Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown and Babygirl holding at nos. 7, 8 and 10 at the domestic box office.

Robert Eggers’ vampire fest from Focus Features had a $4.3 million weekend with a cume of $89.4 million for Nosferatu; Searchlight Pictures Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown starring Timothee Chalamet is at $57.6 million after a $3.8 million weekend; and A24’s psycho-sexual Nicole Kidman-starrer Babygirl is estimating $2 million and a $25.4 million cume. Even if you haven’t seen “Nickel Boys,” the film adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s 2019 novel, you’ve likely heard how it was shot from first-person perspective of its two protagonists. Director RaMell Ross and cinematographer Jomo Fray filmed scenes in uninterrupted shots as if the audience is moving (the camera sometimes physically attached to the actor), listening, and watching through the perspective of Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson). The ground-breaking approach to filming, which Ross dubbed “sentient Pov,” meant an equally radical approach to editing. No longer was the audience in its familiar seat of omniscient spectator, denying the editor the ability to crosscut and seamlessly switch perspectives across the action. “Nickel Boys” editor Nicholas Monsour told IndieWire he had to “unlearn” years of what had become second nature when editing traditional scripted narrative projects, most notably for Jordan Peele.

After the majority of nominations for precursors have been announced, the frontrunner for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar happens to be one of the scripts that was ineligible for a WGA Award nomination.

Though people are still hesitant to say “Conclave” will win Best Picture, the consensus after the film’s Best Screenplay win at the Golden Globes (and Peter Straughan’s speech), is that his adaptation of the 2016 Robert Harris novel is the contender to beat.

Hollywood’s award season has already warmed up the new year; the Golden Globes successfully separated favorites from potential surprises, and nominations for SAG and Critics Choice Awards have already been unveiled. Now, the British Academy Film Awards have followed suit.

While Hollywood is fighting the cataclysmic California wildfires, postponing forthcoming ceremonies and extending Academy Awards submission dates, fortunately, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles face no such threat. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced nominees across 26 categories, recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema.

Doctor Who actor David Tennant, last year’s host, will return to lead the ceremony. This year marks one of the most competitive lineups, with no clear frontrunners and several close races. Conclave emerged the favorite among the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards voters, scoring 12 nominations including Best Film, Director, Leading Actor, and Supporting Actress. Emilia Pérez was close behind with 11 nominations, followed by The Brutalist with nine and Anora, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked with seven.

Overall, 42 films earned BAFTA Film Awards nominations, and 14 of the 24 performance nominees are BAFTA Awards first-timers.

Winners will be announced on February 16th.

The 2025 WGA Awards nomination announcement was delayed a week due to the devastating fires that hit Los Angeles and scorched more than 40,000 acres. The guild currently plans to stick with its Saturday, February 15th date for the awards ceremony.

Bafta has announced the nominations for the Ee British Academy Film Awards in 2025, celebrating the very best in film of the past year. Bafta winner Will Sharpe and former Ee Rising Star winner Mia McKenna-Bruce hosted the announcement via global livestream from the arts charity’s headquarters at 195 Piccadilly, London. The Ee Bafta Film Awards, hosted by David Tennant, will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer from London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 16 February. In addition, the Ee Bafta Film Awards will be available across BritBox in North America, the Nordics and Australia, as well as a host of further international broadcasters to be announced. Viewers at home will also have front row seats to the red-carpet arrivals, which will be streamed live on Bafta’s YouTube, featuring interviews with nominees and other special guests. Voting for the Ee Rising Star Award is now open at ee.co.

This afternoon, Will Sharpe and Mia McKenna-Bruce announced the list of lucky nominees for 2025’s Ee BAFTA Awards.

This year nominations see 12 nominations for ‘Conclave,’ 11 nominations for ‘Emilia Pérez,’ While ‘The Brutalist’ received 9 nominations. 7 nominations for ‘Anora,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Wicked.’

14 out of 24 nominees in the performance categories have received their first BAFTA Film nomination, including Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will once again be held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, and broadcast on Sunday 16 February 2025 on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK.

Ah, awards season, when cinema stans obsessively track the goings-on at all the film fétes in America and that one in England. While not necessarily as big of an indicator for the Academy Awards race as U.S. shows like the Golden Globes, Oscars prognosticators will factor what goes on...

Years before the “Is The Bear actually a comedy?” debate, there was similar controversy concerning the questionable hilariousness of a movie in which Matt Damon is stranded on Mars and grows potatoes in his own poop.

Despite being largely marketed as a dramatic sci-fi thriller, in 2016, The Martian won the Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture Musical, Musical or Comedy. Since Damon never once breaks into song during the two-and-a-half hour run time, seemingly it was submitted for the awards show as a comedy.

This led to accusations that 20th Century Fox had committed “category fraud” by labeling a non-comedy as a comedy in order to steer clear of the more competitive drama category. A number of comedic filmmakers seemed pretty ticked off about this at the time. Paul Feig, whose action-movie parody Spy was up against The Martian, tweeted: “A comedy’s a film whose #1 goal is to make people laugh.

One week after her Golden Globes triumph for I’m Still Here, Fernanda Torres is now expected to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, according to Gold Derby‘s 2025 Oscars predictions. The Brazilian actress, whose mother, Fernanda Montenegro, earned a Best Actress Oscar bid of her own for Central Station (1998), has climbed into our top five for the first time this awards season. A24’s The Brutalist busted out in limited expansion this weekend with close to $1.39 million on just 68 screens, a $20.4k per screen average, excellent for a period film with a three hour and 35-minute run time about a Hungarian architect in 1950s Doylestown, Pa. It won multiple Golden Globes — for Best Picture – Drama, Best Actor for Adrien Brody and Best Director — last Sunday.

This is another fine indie weekend as Hard Truths by iconic filmmaker Mike Leigh saw $165k at 22 theaters, a strong opening, despite severe weather in the south and the ongoing fire crisis in LA.

The Last Showgirl rounded out the top 10 on its debut weekend.

Holdovers Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown and Babygirl are at nos. 4, 6 and 8 respectively.

Indie distributors are now wondering if arthouses that gravitated to wide-release studios films since Covid may want to rethink.

With the advent of Letterboxd, the phrase “everyone’s a critic” has never been more true. For many filmmakers, engaging with any review, let alone those that come from regular people rather than industry professionals, is a major faux pas, but for first-time narrative feature filmmaker RaMell Ross, knowing what people are thinking about his work is half the fun. During the The Hollywood Reporter’s Director Roundtable, the “Nickel Boys” writer/director told his fellow artists that he can’t help but engage with the public’s perceptions.

“I read everything,” Ross said. “Every Letterboxd. Every one.”

Ridley Scott is standing by “The Martian” being categorized as a comedy 10 years later.

The auteur told The Hollywood Reporter that he personally found the survival film to be “really funny.” At the time, “The Martian” caused a stir when it was submitted in the Comedy or Musical category for awards. The film was controversially recognized by the 2016 Golden Globes as a comedy, being nominated as Best Picture — Comedy or Musical and lead star Matt Damon winning the Best Actor — Comedy or Musical prize. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association actually had to amend its rules to clarify what constitutes a comedy or drama film after its win.

Ridley Scott explains during a recent directors' roundtable why it's better to start a project with a script that isn't quite perfect. Now 87 years old, Scott is one of the most prolific and respected filmmakers in Hollywood, rising to fame with movies like Alien (1978) and Blade Runner (1980). In the years since, Scott has directed a number of notable titles, including Thelma & Louis (1991), Gladiator (2000), and Black Hawk Down (2001).

The more recent decades of Scott's career have been filled with ups and downs, and quite a lot that lives in the middle. In the mid-2000s, Scott released movies like Kingdom of Heaven (2005), American Gangster (2007), Body of Lies (2008), and Robin Hood (2010), none of which now stand among his best. Though movies like Prometheus (2012) and The Martian (2015) were successful, Alien: Covenant (2017) was widely perceived as a let-down, and this was followed by The Last Duel (2021) and House of Gucci (2021), and Napoleon (2023), all of which had mixed receptions.
