Riverdale premiered back in 2017. As the CW series’ fans know well, the show has plenty of mystery and drama. Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Madelaine Petsch are some of Riverdale‘s talented cast members credited with making the series such a hit. However, some might be surprised to learn that a Riverdale movie was almost made before the TV show.
Even more surprising, instead of K.J. Apa playing the part of Archie, a disgraced comedian was set to take on the role for the big screen.
Before ‘Riverdale’ was a CW television series, it almost became a movie

“I love that it starts there. I was like, yes, let’s get right into it,” Peyton List said of the new Paramount+ series School Spirits (which premiered March 9 with the first three episodes) kicking off with her character, Maddie, already dead. List, Milo Manheim (Wally), and Nick Pugliese (Charley) all didn’t know much about their characters’ trajectories when they first signed on, they shared when they sat down with TV Insider’s Damian Holbrook. “I thought it was a comedy just reading the first episode and talking to the production team about it. We don’t really know too much about the show getting involved because it’s a murder mystery and they want to keep it that way for us as well,” Manheim explained. “I was surprised to figure out how dark the show is and how real it is. We cover topics that need to be talked about,...

Love is in the air at Paramount+ this Valentine’s Day season as the streamer prepares to debut its new rom-com At Midnight starring Top Gun: Maverick‘s Monica Barbaro and Diego Boneta. Ahead of the movie’s Friday, February 10 debut, Barbaro and Boneta sat down with TV Insider’s Damian Holbrook at the Winter 2023 Television Critics Association Press Tour to discuss the film. At Midnight tells the story of an actress who following a breakup with her costar begins shooting a new movie in Mexico. There, she meets an ambitious hotel manager with whom she connects and they begin meeting up at midnight. (Credit: Camila Jurado/Paramount + © 2022 Viacom International Inc. Journalist Nell (Gina Rodriguez) sees the ghosts of the people for whom she writes obituaries in the new ABC comedy Not Dead Yet, but perhaps the most surprising change in her life is her worst nightmare come true: Her Bff Sam (Hannah Simone) is now friends with their former enemy (and now boss) Lexi (Lauren Ash). “That resonated with me so hard right from the beginning. I was like if that were me…,” Ash said when she and Simone sat down with TV Insider’s Damian Holbrook during the Television Critics Association 2023 Winter Press Tour. Simone admitted that she’d question the friendship, as Nell does on the show. “These are the growing moments that happen on this show, which is, ‘well, Lexi has changed and grown and been good to me, and you need to give her another chance, just like you’re asking for another chance,'” she shared.

American Auto is back for Season 2 and with it comes a bevy of workplace problems for Payne Motors CEO Katherine Hastings (Ana Gasteyer), much to viewers’ delight. Thankfully, there are more laughs on the horizon as Gasteyer caught up with TV Guide Magazine and TV Insider’s Damian Holbrook at the Winter 2023 Television Critics Association Press Tour. As the pair sits down in TV Insider’s TCA studio, Gasteyer says bluntly of Season 2, “We start — there’s no other way to put it — with biblical disaster.” (Credit: Greg Gayne/NBC) As Gasteyer’s Hastings navigates the automobile industry through the eyes of a person with little to zero knowledge about cars, the corporate offices of Payne Motors continue to deliver workplace laughs in Season 2. Heading into these episodes, we know that there’s reason to be concerned about Gary (cancer), but this means that he’ll have to accept help from others. “That’s been the arc for Gary: learning how important self-love and accepting love is and it’s actually what balances and makes the love he gives out so much more meaningful,...

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey may center around Samuel L. Jackson‘s titular character as he grapples with the challenges of dementia, but it’s also about the various people surrounding him through this journey in Apple TV+‘s six-part adaptation of Walter Mosley’s novel. In order to better understand what’s ahead for Ptolemy and his crew, TV Insider’s Damian Holbrook sat down with stars Cynthia Kaye McWilliams, Omar Miller, Marsha Stephanie Blake, and Dominique Fishback to discuss their characters and their connection to Ptolemy. (Credit: Apple TV+) “I love her because she exists in a memory,” McWilliams shares, in the video interview, above. “She pierces through his present,” she adds noting that her character Senisa is “fierce” and “a woman outside of her time.” McWilliams further elaborates that Sensia “is a woman who loved Ptolemy in a way that scares him.” And viewers will learn...

Casts and creative teams from Succession, You, Seal Team, Gossip Girl, and Fear the Walking Dead are among the panels set for this year’s PaleyFest NY, the The Paley Center for Media’s annual fall festival.
Other highlights this year: A “Salute to Chuck Lorre & His CBS Comedy All-Stars,” and a special conversation celebrating New Amsterdam featuring the cast and guests from the World Health Organization.
“When the World Health Organization reached out to us at New Amsterdam, we thought we were being punked,” said David Schulner, Creator, Executive Producer, and Showrunner, and Peter Horton, Executive Producer. “We’re a TV show about fake doctors and they’re… the W.H.O.! At PaleyFest New York, the showrunners and stars of the CW’s Supernatural gathered to reflect on the series’ 15-season run, teasing what’s to come in a finale that’s now less than a month away.
During the virtual panel moderated by TV Guide’s Damian Holbrook, actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles shared their feelings about where their characters end up, assuring Supernatural fans across the world that the best is yet to come.
“I will say that the series finale is my favorite episode of all time…During the filming of that, there was just something in the air,” Padalecki said. “[This story has] been a big part of my life, and I’d be lying if I tried to posit that I hadn’t thought many times about how I want this to end up. I guess I could have seen it ending a slew of different ways, but...

1982’s The Dark Crystal is one of the most beloved cult films in history, as you would expect from a lavish fantasy co-directed by legends Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Fans had held out hope for years that a second installment would eventually be made, but it never managed to escape from development hell.
Luckily, Netflix and their bottomless supply of cash stepped in and announced in 2017 that sequel series Age of Resistance was in the works, and the end result was an acclaimed ten-episode run that spared no expense. Not only was The Incredible Hulk‘s Louis Leterrier hired to direct every episode, but a star-studded cast lent their vocal talents to the hotly-anticipated show.
Taron Egerton, Helena Bonham Carter, Jason Isaacs, Simon Pegg, Mark Hamill, Eddie Izzard, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Sigourney Weaver and many more played roles in Age of Resistance, and it appeared as though the...

The creators of Happy Endings crafted an all-new episode featuring original cast members Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton, Damon Wayans Jr., Eliza Coupe, Adam Pally and Casey Wilson. After premiering it on Sony Pictures Television’s YouTube channel Monday, the cast and creator David Caspe participated in a Q&a during which they essentially volunteered to return to the show.
“We literally just did it for free on our computer,” Caspe said of the online episode, which also served as a benefit to raise money for World Central Kitchen and Color of Change. It had raised over $11,000 by the end of the episode, and over $14,000 by the end of the Q&a. Sony Pictures and the series’ team reportedly made additional donations.
Moderator Damian Holbrook wrapped the post-episode Q&a by asking the cast what it would take for them to return to the series, which ran on ABC for three...

Today on YouTube, the creator, showrunner and stars of Nancy Drew gathered for a virtual celebration, commemorating the 90th anniversary of a literary classic, breaking down the thinking behind the CW series’ first seasons, while teasing developments to come in Season 2.
The latest TV series based on an iconic set of mystery novels, Nancy Drew centers on Nancy (Kennedy McMann), an 18-year-old who finds herself and her four friends pulled into a murder mystery, after her plans for college are put on hold.
Toward the end of Season 1, a major twist transpires, as Nancy learns that her biological father is not Carson Drew (Scott Wolf), but rather, Ryan Hudson (Riley Smith), the man she’s accused of multiple murders, whose wife has been haunting her.
“It’s essentially a dad triangle now, heading into Season 2. I think there’s an opportunity to explore the authenticity as a parent when you let down your kid,...

The Pretty Little Liars cast reunited virtually for a good cause, and now we're really in the mood for donuts. To benefit Feeding America, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Sasha Pieterse, Janel Parrish, Ian Harding, Tyler Blackburn, and creator Marlene King all got together with moderator Damian Holbrook for a little reminiscing on Friday that actually involved a lot more talk of craft services than you might think. Apparently the donuts offered on the set of that show for seven seasons were good enough to eat five of them per day. Of course the reunion featured more than just donut memories. After making it clear that Keegan Allen, who played Toby, was only...

The Riverdale panel at the Warner Bros. TV Block at New York Comic Con Sunday morning began on a somber note (after a hook-ups and séance-filled sneak peek at next season), with the cast members recalling Luke Perry, the beloved TV icon who passed away suddenly on March 4 while the series was in production for season 4 (premiering Oct. 9 at 8 Pm on The CW).
Now into filming for the new season, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and five of the parent players recalled the giant loss of the man who played Archie Andrews’ father, Fred, a loss that’s dealt with in the first episode of the new season. The panel afforded the cast the opportunity to have a more extensive remembrance of Perry than the Riverdale panel at San Diego Comic-Con this summer.
The panel also served as a vehicle to premiere the trailer for the upcoming season.

This week’s question: Who is your favorite TV doctor of all time? (Doctor Who does not count.)
Damian Holbrook (@damianholbrook), TV Guide Magazine
I am not a fan of how TV usually represents doctors. They are mostly either super earnest and “I am going to save you at the risk of my career!” annoying or the “doesn’t play by the rules” rebel who rides a motorcycle down the ER hallway. Both are tired. And don’t even start me on the hard-ass doctors who obviously know everything and show it off while parading a crew of new residents through a massive hospital during the opening of soooooo many pilots. We get it: Their job is their life and they have a secret soft center.

This week’s question: What’s your favorite puppet character on TV of all time? Why?
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Paste Magazine
Given my lifelong love of Henson productions, most especially the Muppets (and all related movies), it’s no surprise that I’ve become fully obsessed with “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” But to pick a favorite puppet? It’s nearly impossible. I have to pick two. Ok, three. It’s important that they’re all represented!
For one: Deet, a Gelfling. The heart and soul of the series, so sweet, so cute. One of the series’ writers revealed recently that Deet is based off of the way his girlfriend talks about horses. It fits; Deet is pure goodness and joy, but she’s also strong and brave. Two: Hup, the...

The inspiration for the General Harding character, Roswell, and Area 51 were topics discussed at the Sdcc Project Blue Book Panel.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Project Blue Book held a panel to tease information about the second season of the series. The panel included Aidan Gillen (Dr. J. Allen Hyenk), Michael Malarkey (Captain Quinn), Laura Mennell (Mimi Hynek), Neal McDonough and Sean Jablonski (Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer).
Starting off the discussion were O'Leary and Jablonski who say they are looking to have more fun in the second season. This comment likely translates to exploring more fictional storylines. The duo explained they do try to make the show fact and science-based, but feels it also has to be fun.
Some UFO enthusiasts have been frustrated at how much fiction the show added to the real-life story of Dr. J. Allen Hyenk. Hynek was a consultant for the U.S, Air Force...

Tuesday’s Emmy nominations make the answer much simpler than I would’ve hoped: “Better Things.” Pamela Adlon’s excellent FX comedy is made with such a potent combination of artistry and heart. Each piece is carefully crafted, from Adlon’s sweeping direction to the intimate vignette storytelling to the sparkling soundtrack to each individual performance and more. There are so many layers here, sliding in so smoothly one on top of the other, you don’t realize just how rich the personalities, story arcs, and overall experience is until you spend time with the series. While never a ratings juggernaut,...

A tie for me, between “The Terror” (Season 1 on AMC) the Tuunbaq, which was a larger, toothier, freakishly lankier version of a polar bear crossed with a space alien sporting enormous claws and teeth. We met this monster in last summer’s breakout series, this lightning-fast terror within “The Terror” that was stalking, hunting and brutally killing the crew of the Hms Erebus and Hms Terror. It was a classic “and then there were none” scenario. The spiritual beast sported sci-fi elements and human-like hands and parts of its face adding to the creepy effect. Infamy, the next installment of “The Terror” for AMC this summer, cannot get here soon enough..
