Toronto Film Festival: ‘Joker,’ ‘Ford v Ferrari,’ ‘Hustlers’ Among Big Premieres

Toronto Film Festival: ‘Joker,’ ‘Ford v Ferrari,’ ‘Hustlers’ Among Big Premieres
This year’s Toronto Film Festival will feature super-villain origin stories, splashy literary adaptations, and Tom Hanks as the most beloved performer in children’s television.

The Canadian celebration of all things movies unveiled its 2019 lineup on Tuesday, and it appears to be an eclectic mixture of glossy awards bait, auteur-driven indies, and populist crowd-pleasers. It’s a bill of fare that ranges from “Joker,” a gritty and very R-rated take on the clown prince of crime, to “Abominable,” an animated adventure featuring an adorable Yeti that’s geared at audiences that are roughly a decade removed from being able to watch “Joker” without a parent or guardian. Bridging that cavernous age gap is “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” a drama about Fred Rogers that features the aforementioned Hanks as the family entertainment icon. Unless it unveils some hitherto unknown skeletons in Rogers’ closet — before starting an on-camera career,

James Cameron Embarks on ‘Mission OceanX’ Exploration Series With National Geographic (Exclusive)
James Cameron is heading back underwater in “Mission OceanX,” a series for National Geographic that will follow a groundbreaking ocean exploration mission. The “Titanic” and “The Abyss” director is no stranger to the deep, having dived down to the Mariana Trench in a submarine in 2012, among other aquatic missions.

“Mission OceanX” will follow the maiden voyage of the Alucia2, a next-generation exploration ship belonging to underwater exploration organization OceanX. BBC Studios’ vaunted Natural History Unit is producing for Nat Geo, but Cameron said in an exclusive interview with Variety that he is pushing the team to take a different approach from regular blue-chip natural history series by getting under the skin of the people and the mission.

“We want it to be character-driven,” Cameron said during a break from shooting the new “Avatar” movies. “One of the things I have pushed everybody towards, maybe even a little bit to the

Production Resumes on ‘Fast & Furious 9’; Investigation Into Stuntman Injury Under Way
Production resumed Tuesday on “Fast & Furious 9,” a day after an accident at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, near London, left a stuntman in hospital. The U.K. agency responsible for workplace safety confirmed that it is now investigating the accident.

The stuntman, Joe Watts, was working on a second unit when he sustained head injuries in a fall. He has been placed in an induced coma after having been taken to a London hospital in an air ambulance. Watts was not Vin Diesel’s stunt double, as was reported by some British tabloids.

In a since-deleted social media post, his girlfriend said Monday night that he had suffered a serious head injury but was in a stable condition.

Main-unit filming resumed Tuesday, but the second unit remained closed. Universal and Warner Bros. declined to comment.

The Health and Safety Executive told Variety that a probe into what happened is underway.

George Miller Looks Back on ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ and Forward to More Furiosa
In the four years since “Mad Max: Fury Road” wowed moviegoers and Academy voters alike, grossing $370 million worldwide and racking up 10 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture and Best Director), George Miller’s demented fever dream of a movie has assumed iconic status. Several major filmmakers have admitted replaying the picture over and over in order to figure out just how Miller did some of the shots, while countless cinephiles have returned to the movie time and again just to bask in the scale of its post-apocalyptic insanity, and to gawk at the high-speed chase sequences that defied everything people thought possible of contemporary action cinema.

As Steven Soderbergh breathlessly put it to one interviewer: “We are talking about the ability in three dimensions to break a sequence into a series of shots in which no matter how fast you’re cutting, you know where you are geographically. And each one

Why Did Trump Make the ‘Okay’ Gesture While Talking about Aoc?

Why Did Trump Make the ‘Okay’ Gesture While Talking about Aoc?
While referring to New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a speech on Tuesday, President Trump flashed a distinctive hand gesture. Here’s a video, captured and shared on Twitter by Vox reporter Aaron Rupar.

https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1153693921542909953?s=21

The gesture is traditionally the symbol for “okay,” but, mutated by a wildly successful 4chan hoax and stripped of its irony by white supremacists, it’s now also used as an earnest “white power” symbol.

So when does it mean what?

As the Anti-Defamation League writes in an explainer, “The

If enacted, the bill would also provide grants to members of communities of color, in an attempt to reverse decades of damage that cannabis criminalization has done to those communities.

“Times have changed — marijuana should not be a crime,” Sen. Harris said in a statement sent to Rolling Stone.

NBC Sports Expects 2020 Tokyo Olympics to ‘Exceed’ Rio Games’ $1.2 Billion in National Ad Sales

NBC Sports anticipates its 2020 Tokyo Olympics will “exceed” the $1.2 billion in national ad sales revenue that it generated with the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The company’s ad sales are pacing “significantly” ahead of where they were at this time in 2015, group Evp Dan Lovinger said Tuesday on a conference call with media. Some of the strongest categories in the relatively early going are auto, travel, beverage, tech and financial services.

“As with PyeongChang and contrary to what some believe, Tokyo’s timezone is favorable for U.S. viewers as morning events will take place live in primetime or our primetime plus program,” Lovinger said.
