Peter Jackson's Middle-earth movies are one of the biggest financial successes in cinema's history having earned nearly 6 billion dollars. They also have 37 Oscar nominations and 17 wins, including a Best Picture award for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) It is the only fantasy movie to have ever won an Oscar in this category, despite all the things that the fans and critics alike complained about.
