Don't try to look up the word on the Webster dictionary: it's just an arbitrary combination of the words "canine" and "animated", canine referring to animals such as dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes, uh... jackals, who play a significant part to the story and aren't just a demographic portion of an animal-related universe.
