Though popular and academy-award nominated for best-picture in its time, today the movie seems overlong and stilted. Most of the acting is good, and Clifton Webb certainly deserved his Oscar Nomination, if not the Oscar ( I don't know who were his competition that year), as did Anne Baxter. Tyrone Power, though one of my favorite actors, does little in this movie but look handsome and earnest. Though there are some good lines and some wonderfully amusing social commentary (the movie is, after all, based on Maughm's book), I was disappointed in the movie.
