Routasydän (1993)

Suprisingly good for finnish "scifi".
2 January 2004
Finnish movies have traditionally shied away from anything that could be considered scifi or fantasy and finding a movie that could be classified to such a rare genre is a small event for me. Especially this movie, since unlike most attempts, this managed to be rather good. It has many flaws, but also many things to like. The near-future is potrayed well enough in a low-key style fitting to the budget, the movie tries to explore some ideas and has a nice melancholic mood. Then again, at times it's boring, the anti-EU propaganda is a bit thick and some rather unexpected bousts of dubious gore effect seem a bit distracting.

Anyway, this just might be the best finnish movie that could by any stretch of imagination be considered scifi, beating such movies as On the Last Border, Booke of Fate and Lipton Cockton.
