This episode of Reading Rainbow is perfect to watch during the month of February. It illustrates how African people were captured and brought to America and made to work as slaves. LeVar, who is African-American himself, explains how slaves put their lives at risk to get away from everything and to head north to freedom. The feature book is a good example of how the song that escaping Black slaves sang led them to freedom in Canada. Music from Black traditions expressed a lot of emotion during those awful times, and it's great, that we still are able to keep the spirit alive through those songs and stories.
