Sir Anthony van Dyck 22 March 1599 - 9 December 1641 was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Southern Netherlands and Italy.
The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work. Van Dyck worked in London for some months in 1621, then returned to Flanders for a brief time, before travelling to Italy, where he stayed until 1627, mostly in Genoa. In the late 1620s he completed his greatly admired Iconography series of portrait etchings, mostly of other artists. He spent five years in Flanders after his return from Italy, and from 1630 was court painter for the archduchess Isabella, Habsburg Governor of Flanders. In 1632 he returned to London to be the main court painter, at the request of Charles I of England.
With the exception of Holbein, van Dyck and his contemporary Diego Velázquez were the first painters of pre-eminent talent to work mainly as court portraitists, revolutionising the genre. He is best known for his portraits of the aristocracy, most notably Charles I, and his family and associates. Van Dyck became the dominant influence on English portrait-painting for the next 150 years. He also painted mythological and biblical subjects, including altarpieces, displayed outstanding facility as a draughtsman, and was an important innovator in watercolour and etching. His superb brushwork, apparently rather quickly painted, can usually be distinguished from the large areas painted by his many assistants. His portrait style changed considerably between the different countries he worked in, culminating in the relaxed elegance of his last English period. His influence extends into the modern period. The Van Dyke beard is named after him. During his lifetime, Charles I granted him a knighthood, and he was buried in St Paul's Cathedral, an indication of his standing at the time of his death.- Heinrich Zschokke was born on 22 March 1777 in Magdeburg, Duchy of Magdeburg, Kingdom of Prussia, Holy Roman Empire [now Saxony-Anhalt, Germany]. Julius Stern (March 22, 1886 - April 1977) was an American film producer. He produced 541 films between 1917 and 1929. He was a co-founder of Universal Studios. He was born in Hintersteinau, Germany, and died in New York, NY. He was the brother of producer Abe Stern and the brother-in-law of Universal Studios co-founder Carl Laemmle.
Stern arrived in the United States in 1903 and soon thereafter worked for Carl Laemmle at Continental Clothing (which was owned by Julius' uncle Salomon "Sam" Stern). After Laemmle left Continental in 1905 , Julius went to work for Laemmle as an Assistant Manager (1906), then as a Manager (1908) of Laemmle's White Front Theater (1908) and was named Carl Laemmle's personal assistant. As such, he was instrumental in the founding and operation of the Laemmle Film Exchange and the Independent Moving Picture Company (IMP), where he was General Manager, until the founding of Universal. Stern was integral to Laemmle's acquisition of control at Universal. Julius was briefly a Director (1912) . and an officer (1912-1929) of Universal Studios and President of L-KO Studios (1916-1919) . and Century Comedies (1917-1926) , which released under Universal. While at Universal, Stern was a guiding force in the development of new film-making techniques, which he learned from his many trips abroad and was a key figure in Universal's expansion in the US and Europe.
Many silent film stars were "discovered" by Julius and his brother Abe, who served as General Manager, under L-KO, Century and Rainbow, including Baby Peggy. Under Julius' leadership, Century Comedies and later Stern Brothers often featured animals in comedic roles including "Brownie", a dog, several lions and "Joe Martin" an orangutan. In 1926, Century Comedies was dissolved and Stern Brothers Comedy was founded. Stern Brothers continued to release under Universal until 1929 and introduced the world to film series featuring Tarzan, Buster Brown, Mike and Ike and Baby Snookums. In 1929, the Sterns' relationship with Universal was abruptly discontinued with a telegram from Carl Laemmle and by April, 1929 Stern Brothers was laying plans to produce sound feature films as well as continuing their comedy shorts and series at their newly formed National Sound Recording Studio. In 1933, Max and Arthur Alexander, nephews of Julius and Abe Stern, who had been operating National Studios, renamed the operation Alexander Brothers Studio and commenced production. By 1935 Julius Stern retired from active participation in the motion picture business to manage the real estate he had acquired over the years. The successor firms managed by the Alexander brothers and other relatives of Julius and Abe Stern continued producing movies and even films for television into the 1970s. Julius Stern died at his home in New York on April 26, 1977 at the age of 91.- Actor

As a kid trying to negotiate his way through various gang territories to a floating crap game or a new pool hall where he was not yet known as a hustler, Leonard (Chico) Marx learned to fake several accents. Because he later employed an Italian accent in the Marx Brothers' act, people assumed his name was pronounced "Cheeko." Instead, Leonard was dubbed "Chicko" for his other consuming passion, women (or "chicks"), at which he was more successful than gambling, but when a typesetter dropped the "k" out of his name, the brothers let it stay as Chico. Chico was the brother who guided the Marxes to stardom. He took over the act's managment (amicably) from their mother, Minnie, and through audacity and charm, Chico secured the Brothers their first international (London) booking, their first Broadway show and their MGM contract with Irving Thalberg, among other successes.- William Royle was born on 22 March 1887 in Rochester, New York, USA.
