William Shakespeare's birthdate is assumed from his baptism on April 25. His father John was the son of a farmer who became a successful tradesman; his mother Mary Arden was gentry. He studied Latin works at Stratford Grammar School, leaving at about age 15. About this time his father suffered an unknown financial setback, though the family home remained in his possession. An affair with Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior and a nearby farmer's daughter, led to pregnancy and a hasty marriage late in 1582. Susanna was born in May of 1583, twins Hamnet and Judith in January of 1585. By 1592 he was an established actor and playwright in London though his "career path" afterward (fugitive? butcher? soldier? actor?) is highly debated. When plague closed the London theatres for two years he apparently toured; he also wrote two long poems, "Venus and Adonis" and "The Rape of Lucrece". He may have spent this time at the estate of the Earl of Southampton. By December 1594 he was back in London as a member of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, the company he stayed with the rest of his life. In 1596 he seems to have purchased a coat of arms for his father; the same year Hamnet died at age 11. The following year he purchased the grand Stratford mansion New Place. A 1598 edition of "Love's Labors" was the first to bear his name, though he was already regarded as England's greatest playwright. He is believed to have written his "Sonnets" during the 1590s. In 1599 he became a partner in the new Globe Theatre, the company of which joined the royal household on the accession of James in 1603. That is the last year in which he appeared in a cast list. He seems to have retired to Stratford in 1612, where he continued to be active in real estate investment. The cause of his death is unknown.- After graduating from college in 1809, Buchanan became a lawyer. In 1814 he entered the Pennsylvania Assembly as a Federalist representative. In 1820 Buchanan was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he served until 1831. At the same time he served as envoy to Russia from 1823 to 1833. He became a leading figure in the newly emerging Democratic Party in Pennsylvania. From 1834 to 1845 he served in the US Senate, where he supported the southern states' position on the slave issue. Under the presidency of James Knox Polk (1845-1849), Buchanan played a key role in his expansionist policies as Secretary of State.
Meanwhile, he was chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations from 1836 to 1841. He reached an agreement with Great Britain on the Oregon issue. In the war against Mexico (1846-1848) he advocated the annexation of large parts of the neighboring country. President Franklin Pierce sent Buchanan as an envoy to Great Britain from 1853 to 1856. In 1856 he won the US presidential election as the Democratic candidate. The following year he began his term in the White House. Buchanan was the only unmarried President of the United States. His niece, Harriet Lane, served as "First Lady" during his term.
As with his predecessor Franklin Pierce, Buchanan's efforts at reconciliation and compromise were doomed to failure in view of the increasingly irreconcilable conflict over the slave issue. During his presidency, the Democratic Party was increasingly divided into northern and southern factions. An economic depression and conflict with the Mormons in Utah continued to complicate the domestic political environment of Buchanan's administration. Having already lost the 1860 presidential election to Abraham Lincoln, Buchanan faced his final crisis in office with the secession of South Carolina.
The US President lacked the ability to take decisive action to counteract the southern state's secession from the Union. Amid allegations of having been responsible for the dissolution of the Union and the outbreak of the American Civil War, Buchanan bitterly withdrew from the presidency and politics in 1861.

- Adventure writer Talbot Mundy was born in London, England, and educated at Rigby. After graduation he spent a year in Germany studying agriculture, then took a job with the British government in Baroda, India. He became fascinated with Indian history and culture, and spent much time traveling the country on horseback, even making his way into Tibet. He was later posted to positions in Australia and several areas of Africa, including Kenya, where he spent a good number of years. He became proficient in several African languages and dialects and took up big-game hunting, but he developed a particular interest in local magic, which he studied extensively. He was under no illusions about the abilities of many of the local practitioners--he once said that many of them were "frauds and charlatans"--but he did say that some of them actually did possess "occult powers" that would truly be considered magic and that could not be explained away by science.
He traveled to the US in 1911, and became a US citizen in 1917. The success of his early novels enabled him to travel extensively around the world, especially in the Middle East and Egypt. He also spent a lot of time in Mexico, much of it in the Yucatan area where he studied Mayan history and culture.
He finally settled down in Anna Maria, Florida, where he continued to write novels and short stories. A number of them were turned into films, the best known of which is probably King of the Khyber Rifles (1953), a splashy Technicolor epic made by 20th Century-Fox and starring Tyrone Power. - Elizabeth Dunne was born on 23 April 1879 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Thereafter, she featured successfully in a number of similar New York productions, including The Follies of 1907 and 1908, The Troubadour (Lyric, 1910) and Betsy (Herald Square, 1911). In 1913 Grace La Rue made her first trip to London, where on 4 August 1913 at the Palace Theatre she made a sensation by singing You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do It). Composed by James V. Monaco, with lyrics by Joseph McCarthy, it had been introduced by Al Jolson in the musical Honeymoon Express at the Winter Garden Theatre, New York, on 6 February 1913. Miss La Rue then appeared in another musical, The Girl Who Didn't at the Lyric Theatre, London, which opened for a disappointing run of sixty-eight performances on 18 December 1913. Other members of the cast included Lionel Mackinder, C.H. Workman, Tom Shale, James Blakeley, Amy Augarde and Yvonne Arnaud. Although the piece did not succeed, Miss La Rue scored another personal triumph with an interpolated song by Elsa Maxwell, the extraordinary A Tango Dream, which she soon recorded for The Gramophone Company Ltd in London for its His Master's Voice label (catalogue no. 03373, recorded 6 February 1914, issued April 1914). Afterwards, Miss La Rue resumed her American appearances in productions such as The Greenwich Village Follies (Winter Garden, New York, 1928).
