Before Empire's internationally successful group, Atari Teenage Riot released a record, Alec had recorded and released twenty or so twelve inches on Force Inc, and three albums on Mille Plateaux under his own name. Mille Plateaux had been formed in 1993 by the visionary Achim Szepanski who took the name of the label from the critique of social structure by Deleuze and Guattari. Szepanski released records by artists who would have deconstructed if they had ever got around to constructing in the first place and in doing so liberated true creativity outside any conventions of popular music. In the nineties the new exponents of electronic music particularly in the UK and US are firmly part of the MTV generation drawing their inspiration from exploring the synthesizer's potential, Detroit techno and Brian Eno's ambient concepts. Empire instinctively dismantled structures that had existed for decades and set about finding new approaches within the context of his own compositions. Empire, rooted in mainland Europe's modern classical iconoclasm, Germany's summarily, (and incorrectly), dismissed Krautrock experimentation and his own deconstructionist tendency found his own path. There was no outlet for the UK's underground's new pretenders in early 90's Germany and Empire was initially a sole voice in Germany contemporary youth music and heard revolutionary artists such as Oval and Curd Duca long before the likes of Aphex Twin or Prodigy had caught the ferry across the Channel.
Alec's rock records were released on Digital Hardcore Recordings along with his contemporaries from Berlin's hardcore breakbeat scene. However his more considered pieces were released initially on Mille Plateaux records and later his own Geist imprint. Empire's earliest releases Limited Editions 1990-94 and Generation Starwars both came out in 1994. The first collected together pieces that showed Empire delving into the new fringes of electronica. Eighties pop had put it in a box and squeezed the life out of it but Empire was determined to reclaim the spirit of adventure and freedom that had blossomed in the sixties and seventies before commercial pop had bled the life from it. Three very different albums followed. Low on Ice was an extended mood piece evoking the vast expanse of the arctic tundra, it sonorous landscape and sense of isolation dissolved time and space. Recorded in a tent in Iceland using minimal equipment - this was long before the era of the laptop - the result was one of the coldest and sonorous recordings made to date. Empire described it as "slowly drowning in ice water, seeing the sun moving further away from you." It was chosen amongst the 50 most important electronic music albums since the last 25 years by German Groove Magazine Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5 deconstructed the sounds of traditional jazz and reassembled it as a dystopian take of the music of the future. It has much in common with the Free Jazz movement of Coleman, Coltrane and Taylor; artists whom Empire had yet to hear).
The final work of the 96 trilogy Les Etoiles Des Filles Mortes was clearly his most serious piece in the contemporary classical mode which derived more from the atonal chamber music of Janacek or the tone clusters of Penderecki than from any of the pop rock experiments of mid twentieth century. The next five years saw the enormous international success of Atari Teenage Riot which kept him touring. While on the road he conceived his magnum opus, but wasn't in a position to release it until 2002. The second CD of the set confounded the ATR fans but came as no surprise to those who had followed his solo output from the start. It has something in common with the previous albums but with the insight and mature vision that the crucial decade had brought. As the UK's premier music paper wryly put it, "For a man so certain that there isn't a future, he looks like one of its most confident architects." Almost 20 years after recording "Low on Ice" Empire, prompted by a request for music by a film director, delved into his archive and found much more music from the same sessions. He digitized the full Iceland Sessions, 175 minutes of music, which will be released later this year on a 3 CD boxset.
Now in 2014 Alec Empire will bring "Low On Ice" to the stage for a few intimate shows, using the soundtrack to take international audiences with him on an illusive trip back to Iceland's harsh winter landscape.- Camera and Electrical Department

As a law student he gained renown for his skillful defense of socialist activists arrested by the Czarist police, which may well have contributed to his political party, the Socialist Revolution, being outlawed in 1912. That same year he was elected to the Russian Duma (Parliament).
After the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the overthrow of the Czar, Kerensky was named Minister of Justice in the Provisional Government. He was appointed Minister of War in May of that year, and since Russia was still involved in World War I, he made preparations for a new offensive against the Germans. Unfortunately, the Russian military had become dispirited, disenchanted and demoralized after a series of crushing defeats and staggering losses (the Battle of Tannenberg alone cost them more than 100,000 dead, brought about mainly because of stupefyingly inept and incompetent leadership), and its soldiers were in no mood or condition to continue fighting for a cause they no longer believed in. In addition, the Russian people themselves were sick of the war and the deprivations that came with it, and the country was being convulsed by strikes, riots and all manner of civil strife. In July of 1917 the Bolsheviks attempted to seize power in the city of Petrograd, and Kerensky sent Cossack troops there to crush the revolt. Later that month he was appointed Prime Minister. He found himself clashing with Gen. Kornilov, commander of the Russian army, who wanted to clamp down on the country and turn it into a military dictatorship. In November of 1917 the Bolsheviks again took advantage of the chaotic conditions in the country and mounted another revolt. This time Kerensky couldn't put it down, and as the revolt spread he was forced to flee Moscow. He sought refuge in London and became part of a Russian "government in exile", but his somewhat heavy-handed methods alienated many of the groups that formed the opposition, especially the White Russians. There was a strong resistance to the Bolsheviks inside Russia itself, and the White Russians had formidable military forces that fought them across Russia, but the resistance finally ended in the 1920s with the Red Army triumphant. Kerensky stayed in England, becoming the editor of a socialist revolutionary newspaper, "Dni", and wrote several books decrying the Communist takeover of his country. In 1940 he moved to the US, where he wrote more books and headed a foundation called the Study of War and Revolution at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA.

Alexis Kanner was born in Bagneres de Luchon, France. His family, displaced Jewish refugees, emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1944. After attending McGill University and performing for a season with the Stratford Festival of Canada, Kanner returned to Europe to pursue his acting career.
In 1959, Kanner was invited to join the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He appeared as Caliban in Sir Barry Jackson's production of The Tempest ("..the repellently real Caliban of Alexis Kanner cannot be bettered", Illustrated News), as well as playing The Husband in Bernard Hepton's production of Rashomon and Ken in The Naked Island. He appeared as Hotspur in Henry IV for Orson Wells at the Dublin Gate Theatre and the lead in Edward Albee's The American Dream at the Royal Court Theatre in 1961, a performance described by Alan Brien of the Sunday Telegraph as "...played by Alexis Kanner like a human steak looking for a plate on which to serve himself; he is the final parody of the all-American paragon".
In 1964 as part of director Peter Brook's Theatre of Cruelty Season at LAMDA, he played the title role in Charles Marowitz's reinterpretation of Hamlet.
Kanner won enormous praise for his one-man performance as Sammy in Ken Hughes' Sammy at London's Arts Theatre. Other notable performances were as Harry Mallory in Saroyan's Across the Board on Tomorrow Morning at the Duke of York, Julie in John Hopkins' Find Your Way Home and, Sa'id for Peter Brook's RSC production of Genet's The Screens.
Kanner became a household name as Detective Matt Stone in the BBC television series Softly Softly in 1966. In 1967 Kanner returned to Montreal to play Ernie Turner in Don Owen's film The Ernie Game, which won two Canadian Film Awards, for Best Director and Best Feature.
In 1967/68 he met Patrick McGoohan, the director and creator of the cult television series The Prisoner. Kanner performed in 2 episodes; Living In Harmony, where he was the psychotic mute Kid, and the rebellious youth N°.48 in the series' finale, Fall Out are both memorable appearances in a great series. McGoohan and Kanner became life-long friends.
Kanner subsequently acted in the films Crossplot (alongside Roger Moore, 1969), Connecting Rooms (with Bette Davis and Michael Redgrave, 1969) and Goodbye Gemini (with Judy Geeson, 1970). He then returned to Canada to star as a wild man trying to settle down on a farm in Mahoney's Last Stand (with Sam Waterson, 1972), which he produced, co-wrote, co-directed and edited. The original soundtrack was written and performed by Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane.
Kanner was reunited with Patrick McGoohan, when both starred in the film Kings and Desperate Men, a thriller about a talk-show host (McGoohan) who is taken hostage in a radio station. Kanner produced, directed, co-wrote, co-shot and edited the picture. The film received critical acclaim in the United States and in the U.K., for both McGoohan and Kanner's performances and for Kanner's innovative filmmaking.
Kanner continued - as writer, producer and director - developing projects for the screen. In addition to his own writing, he worked with Abraham Polonsky on Mario and the Magician, Thomas McGuane on the anti-war script Flying Colors and Alan Sharp on Picture Yourself. He became increasingly disinterested in the deal-making part of the filmmaking process and became more interested in just writing. Subsequently, he dedicated all of his time to writing prose.
Alex came full circle when he felt the need to perform on the stage again. In search of a play which interested him, he became reacquainted with George Buchner's work. He found himself passionate about the character of Woyzeck and, in true Kanner fashion, went back to Buchner's original fragmented manuscripts and started again. At the time of his death, at his home in London, Alex was in the process of editing his adaptation of Woyzeck.- Alfons Schuhbeck was born on 2 May 1949 in Traunstein, Bavaria, Germany.
