Adam Protextor is a musician, filmmaker, and actor working in Los Angeles.
A graduate of the University of Iowa's intensive film theory program, Protextor relocated from his hometown in Iowa to Austin, TX in 2008. In 2012, his feature-length horror film Dropping Evil was distributed on DVD through Wild Eye Releasing. A radically experimental genre film, Dropping Evil wears its influences loudly, from Godard to John Woo to Friday the 13th, and was called "bravura independent filmmaking at its gonzo best and "undoubtedly one of the best ultra-low budget horror movies of the last decade" by DVDTalk.com.
That same year, Protextor co-founded Austin Mic Exchange (AMX), a hip hop open mic that would run weekly for 5 years, earning multiple awards (including "Best of Austin") and spawning Weird City Festival, Austin's first-ever live hip hop festival. From 2012 onward, Protextor worked as both live show promoter and artist as a prominent figure in the Austin music scene, opening for Run the Jewels, Aesop Rock, Geto Boys, Kool Keith, and more, as well as playing Sound on Sound Fest, Art Outside, 35-Denton, and Fun Fun Fun Fest Nites. During his tenure in the Live Music Capital, he released four LPs, including "American Neon" (a collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Brother Bear featuring guest performances by Mélat and CupcakKe) that was released to critical acclaim. A frequent host of Austin Mic Exchange, Protextor also went on to host several episodes and live shows of the talk show "The Hot Conversation" for OVRLD.com and Alamo Drafthouse.
In 2018, Protextor graduated from the ColdTowne Theater's improv conservatory program. In addition to performing regularly in 3 house troupes, he appeared in Super Black, Secret Mountain, and as the Doctor in Amber Ruffin's Bigfoot: The Musical, performing at Edinburgh Fringe Fest, Austin Sketch Fest, and Out of Bounds Comedy Festival in 2019 alone. At the ColdTowne Awards, Protextor's troupe Hunnicut took home "Best New Troupe" and Protextor received the "Best Sketch Writing" award for his work on Secret Mountain. He also served as Out of Bounds Fest's PR Director.
Protextor co-founded Baby Lion Studios with his partner and frequent collaborator Stephanie Thoreson in 2018. Together, the duo used their new production house to create a variety of on-demand promotional video work for artists in the Austin sphere, direct music videos for indie artists, and produce several independent talk shows for YouTube. In 2019, the duo began pre-production on Wind-Ups, a semi-autobiographical sitcom about Protextor's tenure working at legendary Austin toy store Toy Joy in his early 20s. Aleksei Vladimirovich Batalov was born on November 20, 1928, into the family of famous Russian theatrical actor Vladimir Batalov. He was born in the city of Vladimir, near Moscow, where his grandmother was the Doctor General at the Vladimir city hospital. His parents, Vladimir Petrovich Batalov and Nina Antonovna Olshevskaya, were both actors of the Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT), under the directorship of Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. His uncle, named Nikolay Batalov, was a distinguished film actor.
The Batalov family lived in the actor's apartments building at the Moscow Art Theatre. There young Aleksei got early exposure to the acting profession. He then moved with his mother to the home of her second husband writer Viktor Ardov, who was the neighbor of Osip Mandelstam. Young Batalov became a good friend of poet Anna Akhmatova who stayed in his room during her many visits to Moscow. Later, in the 1960's, Aleksei Batalov painted an oil portrait of Anna Akhmatova. Writers Mikhail A. Bulgakov, Mikhail Zoschenko, Boris Pasternak were among the closest friends of the Batalov's family, being also the colleagues of his stepfather Viktor Ardov.
In 1945, upon his return from evacuation in Tatarstan, Aleksei Batalov made his film debut as a cameo in 'Zoya'. He studied acting professionally at the Moscow Art Theatre's Acting Studio-School of Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko from which he graduated in 1950, as an actor. That same year he was drafted in the Red Army and worked as an actor with the Central Theatre of the Soviet Army from 1950-1953. He then returned to the Moscow Art Theatre and was a permanent member of the troupe through 1957.
Batalov shot to fame with his role in 'Bolshaya Semya' (The Big Family 1954) directed by 'Iosif Kheifets'. For that role he won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival, which he shared with his partners Sergei Lukyanov, Boris Andreyev, Nikolai Gritsenko, Pavel Kadochnikov, and others; the whole ensemble of actors and actresses were awarded for that film at Cannes, in 1955.
Aleksei Batalov received more international acclaim for his memorable acting opposite Tatyana Samoylova in The Cranes Are Flying (1957) (aka.. The Cranes Are Flying) for which director Mikhail Kalatozov won the Golden Palm at Cannes, in 1958. Batalov won the Jussi Diploma of Merit (1962) for the supporting role in 'Dama s sobachkoi' (aka.. The Lady with the Dog), a story by Anton Chekhov directed by Iosif Kheifits. Batalov also worked with Kheifits in 'V gorode S.' (In the Town of S.), another story by Anton Chekhov. Alrksei Batalov himself directed three films; 'Shinel' (1960) on the story by Nikolay Gogol, 'Tri tolstyaka' (1966) by Yuriy Olesha, and 'Igrok' (1973) (aka.. The Gambler), an adaptation of the eponymous book by Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Aleksei Batalov earned the State Prize of the USSR for a strong and difficult leading role in '9 dney odnogo goda' (1961), for which director Mikhail Romm won Crystal Globe. Batalov's performance in the leading role of a Russian intellectual in 'Beg' (1970) based on the play by Mikhail A. Bulgakov, was somewhat overshadowed by the brilliant duo of his film partners Mikhail Ulyanov and Evgeniy Evstigneev. However, after a few years of his hiatus, Batalov made a successful comeback in 'Moskva slezam ne verit' (1979), which won an Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film (1981).
In addition to his numerous international awards Batalov was honored with the title of the People's Artist of the USSR (1976). He was decorated and received many Soviet and Russian awards from the state. Batalov was the Dean of the Actors Studio at the Moscow State Film Institute (VGIK) from 1975 to 2005. British-born American journalist and broadcaster. Cooke was born in Salford, Manchester: his father was an iron-fitter and Methodist lay-preacher. He grew up in Blackpool where his parents ran a guest house. Here he first came into contact with Americans, in the form of GIs on their way to fight in World War One. He won a scholarship to Jesus College, Cambridge, where he studied English. A fellowship from the Commonwealth Fund subsequently enabled him to study theatre at Yale and Harvard for two years. In 1934 he got his first broadcasting job, as a film critic for the BBC, but soon returned to the States and in 1941 became a US citizen. For a time he worked as a freelance journalist for The Times, reporting from New York. Then in 1945 he joined The Guardian as its US correspondent, a position he held until 1972. His first job was to cover the creation of the United Nations. In March 1946 he began a radio programme for the BBC called "American Letter". This was a series of 15-minute broadcasts in which he tried to give an impression of life in America. Cooke was warned by the producer that this would last no longer than 26 weeks: in the event, as "Letter from America", it lasted for 58 years, becoming the world's longest-running speech radio programme. Cooke made in total 2869 broadcasts, mostly from his 15th-floor flat on Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park. Memorable broadcasts included his eyewitness account of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. He also broadcast on American TV, presenting "Omnibus" in the 1950s and from 1971 to 1993 presenting British programmes to American viewers for PBS' "Masterpiece Theatre" series. A much-respected figure on both sides of the Atlantic, he was granted an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973, and addressed Congress as part of the bicentennial celebrations. At the age of 95, having been forced to miss a broadcast due to his increasing ill-health, Cooke decided to end "Letter from America" (having in the past made 16 broadcasts from a hospital bed). The last programme was transmitted on 2nd March 2004 and he died less than a month later.- Aliye Rona was born on 20 November 1921 in Der'a, Syria.
