Prolific Irish character actor Thomas J. Dugan was born in Dublin on New Year's Day 1889. At a young age, his family moved to Philadelphia, where Dugan attended high school. He had a good tenor voice so, after leaving school, he decided to pursue a career in show business. Before appearing on stage, Dugan performed in minstrel and traveling medicine shows that were popular at the time. He played in musical comedies in New York City and vaudeville theaters such as Earl Carroll's Vanities before eventually becoming a comedian on Broadway.
Dugan began his acting career in 1927 with roles in some obscure silent movies. He was lucky enough to be cast in Lights of New York (1928), the very first feature film with all synchronous dialogue (The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first movie to use audible dialogue, but it still used title cards). His best-known films are Ernst Lubitsch's satirical World War II comedy To Be or Not to Be (1942) and the Gene Kelly/Frank Sinatra/Esther Williams musical Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949).
Over the years, Dugan appeared in more than 260 films, appearing on silver screens frequently until a road accident in California took his life on March 7, 1955. He was 66 years old at the time of his death.- Count Cutelli has received honored recognition for the excellence of his sound effects equipment, personally installed by him in the radio stations of the following governments: France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Spain and Holland and the leading motion picture studios throughout Europe, as well as the foremost radio stations of the United States.

Estevão Amarante, a Portuguese actor and singer, was a regular idol in his country for over two decades. Born in Lisbon on January 9, 1889 (and not 1894 as most biographies erroneously claim), his future was not all mapped out. Born into a very poor family, he lost his father while he was still very young. But the boy had an asset, a good voice, and he got noticed for that. Which resulted in his being hired as of 1900 (he was eleven) for "A Viagem de Suzette", a light opera by Léon Vasser. One year later, Estavão joined "O Teatro do Infante", a children's theater company. He concomitantly appeared in works for adults, spoken dramas, revues or operettas (like "A Casta Susana" in 1909). His growing good looks and growing talent gained him growing success, particularly from 1910 to the early 1930s, where he shone in many a revue and an operetta, singing tremendously successful fados. He had become the actor-singer of his generation. But after 1932, his star as a singer paled and he turned to spoken theater, working with great regularity. He also appeared before the cameras but Portuguese directors and producers failed to give him worthwhile parts. His eight roles on the big screen are a disappointment compared with his glorious stage career. Estevão Amarante died in Porto on December 12, 1951 exactly one year after celebrating the 50th anniversary of his debut- Jacob Jacobs was born on 1 January 1889 in Hungary. A graduate in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, Haas spent his first two years in Hollywood at the art department of Famous Players Lasky (1919-21), as a set designer and builder. He received early acclaim from the journal American Architect for a town in Elmhurst, New York, he had constructed for the movie The Copperhead (1920), and subsequently detailed to show its ageing process over a period of six decades. After several years of freelance work, Haas joined First National (1925-26) and Fox (1927-28), before settling at Warner Brothers in 1929. Until his retirement in 1950, he handled most of the A-grade output at Warners, along with Anton Grot. This included many of Bette Davis's lavishly produced, popular melodramas, such as Dark Victory (1939), Now, Voyager (1942) and Mr. Skeffington (1944).
Haas's best work is exemplified by Jezebel (1938), a romantic period drama set around the time of the Civil War, for which he built an authentic-looking Louisiana plantation house on the Warner Brothers ranch, some thirty miles from the main studio. The picture cost $1,073,000 to make, but still brought in a substantial profit. By contrast, for The Maltese Falcon (1941), Haas and director John Huston were allocated the standard gangster film budget of $300,000 (and a shooting schedule of six weeks). Still, Haas managed to fulfill the studio's missive of 'not overlooking a single detail'. He effectively established the standard for the look and atmosphere of subsequent films noir, particularly in terms of his claustrophobic sets, and in juxtaposing the austere, somewhat seedy interiors of Spade's office with the opulence of the hotel rooms and lobby.- Actor
