Adrian was the only child of Col. Robert Adams and Ellen McMahon Johnson. Ellen was Robert Johnson's third wife, the other two dying after only a few years of marriage. Even though he was reared as an only child, Adrian had four half-siblings. The Johnson family originally came from near Georgetown, Kentucky and were influential in state politics. Adrian was only three years of age when his father passed away, but his father's connections led him to receive a good education. He graduated with a Liberal Arts Degree from St. Mary's College in Belmont, North Carolina. He would become a prolific screenwriter for early day silent films, starting first at Metro and then for the William Fox Company. He has been credited with writing at least fifty-three early day productions, including "The Darling of Paris" (1915) and "Cleopatra" (1917), starring Theda Bara. He was working for the Fox company as early as 1915 and continued until the early 1930s, having relocated to Los Angeles. On March 5, 1926, he married Margaret Cloud, a comedienne. Alan Walbridge Ladd was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the only child of Ina Raleigh (aka Selina Rowley) and Alan Harwood Ladd, a freelance accountant. His mother was English, from County Durham. His father died when he was four. At age five, he burned his apartment playing with matches, and his mother moved them to Oklahoma City. He was malnourished, undersized and nicknamed Tiny. His mother married a house painter who moved them to California--a la "The Grapes of Wrath"--when he was eight. He picked fruit, delivered papers, and swept stores. In high school he discovered track and swimming. By 1931 he was training for the 1932 Olympics, but an injury put an end to those plans. He opened a hamburger stand called Tiny's Patio, and later worked as a grip at Warner Brothers Pictures. He married his friend Midge in 1936, but couldn't afford her, so they lived apart. In 1937, they shared a friend's apartment. They had a son, Alan Ladd Jr., and his destitute alcoholic mother moved in with them, her agonizing suicide from ant poison witnessed a few months later by her son. His size and coloring here regarded as not right for movies, so he worked hard at radio, where talent scout and former actress Sue Carol discovered him early in 1939. After a string of bit parts in "B" pictures--and an unbilled part in Orson Welles' classic Citizen Kane (1941)--he tested for This Gun for Hire (1942) late in 1941. His fourth-billed role as psychotic killer Raven made him a star. He was drafted in January 1943 and discharged in November with an ulcer and double hernia. Throughout the 1940s his tough-guy roles packed audiences into theaters and he was one of the very few males whose cover photos sold movie magazines. In the 1950s he was performing in lucrative but unrewarding films (an exception being what many regard as his greatest role, Shane (1953)). By the end of the 1950s liquor and a string of so-so films had taken their toll. In November 1962 he was found unconscious lying in a pool of blood with a bullet wound near his heart, a probable suicide attempt. In January 1964 he was found dead, apparently due to an accidental combination of alcohol and sedatives.- Writer

Allen Q. Thompson was born on 2 July 1897 in California, USA. Allen Q. was a cinematographer, known for Red River (1948), The Fatal Mistake (1924) and The Midnight Express (1924). Allen Q. died on 15 December 1964 in San Diego, California, USA.- Alma Mahler-Werfel (Vienna, 1879 -- New York, 1964) - born in a wealthy bourgeois Viennese family, the daughter of the popular painter Emil Jakob Schindler and his wife Anna von Bergen - was arguably one of the greatest femmes fatales of the turn-of-the-century Europe: an era that was not only rich in femmes fatales, but worshiped - and feared - them. As a young girl, Alma was hailed as "the most beautiful girl in Vienna"; and throughout her life she inspired the admiration and love of some of the most talented men of her time. She was courted by Gustav Klimt, Paul Kammerer, Max Burckhard, and Alexander von Zemlinsky, among others.
In 1902, at the age of twenty-two, Alma married the famous composer (and director of the Vienna Court Opera) Gustav Mahler, with whom she then had two daughters (one of them, Maria, died at a very early age, the other one, Anna, grew up to be a well-known sculptor). Shortly after the death of her young daughter, Alma began an affair with the up-and-coming architect Walter Gropius (who became of the leading masters of 20th century architecture). After Mahler's death, in 1911, she engaged in a lengthy affair with the painter Oskar Kokoschka, who became obsessed with her (which led to a series of bizarre incidents, including the making of a life-size doll in Alma's likeness).
In 1915, Alma married her old flame Gropius. The following year she gave birth to their much-adored daughter, Manon. (Manon died suddenly, in April of 1935, leaving her mother - and a host of admirers - distraught with grief.) As early as 1917, during one of Gropius' frequent military leaves, she met the writer Franz Werfel, with whom she started living around the time of her divorce from Gropius (1920) and whom she eventually married (1929). With Werfel - who was Jewish, therefore in danger during the Nazi regime - she moved to the USA and remained there until her death, in 1964.
Upon close scrutiny it could be argued that Alma's life wasn't particularly easy, even though she lived in leisure for most of her lifetime. She seemed to have endured a lot of heartache; and, perhaps no less tragically, she had stifled her own considerable musical talent. (A few of her musical compositions - piano pieces - have been preserved.) She willingly resigned herself to serve as a muse to some of the most famous and talented men of her time. And that she did, in the grandest of styles: so much so that that the inspiration she provided could be rightly described as her greatest and proudest achievement. - Almeda Fowler was born on 27 February 1886 in Florence, Alabama, USA. She was an actress, known for Party Girl (1930), Fifteen Wives (1934) and Carolina (1934). She was married to Alfred Henry Reeves. She died on 8 September 1964 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
- Alvaro Moreyra was born on 23 November 1888 in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He was a writer, known for Barro Humano (1929). He died on 12 October 1964 in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil.
- Alvin Cullum York was born in rural Pall Mall, Tennessee. Raised in the mountains, he learned to shoot guns when he was just a boy, becoming an expert with both a pistol and rifle before his teens. Under the influence of his high school girlfriend--and his future wife--Gracie Williams, he also became a devout born-again Christian and gave up the drinking, brawling, smoking, gambling and bare-knuckle fighting that marked his early days. When the US declared war on Germany in April 1917, York was drafted into the army, where he sought exemption as a conscientious objector, but was turned down. Inducted into the 328th Infantry Regiment on November 24, 1917, he distinguished himself in basic training until he was ordered to shoot at human forms on the target range. After days of soul-searching, York reconciled himself to military service and completed his training, and his unit sailed to France the following spring. His regiment was assigned to the Meuse-Argonne salient during the final great Allied offensive from September to the war's end on November 11, 1918. On October 8, 1918, York, then a corporal, was part of a company assigned to attack a heavily defended hill near Chatel-Chehery. Pinned down by intense machine-gun fire, York joined a squad of 17 men that attempted to outflank the German position from the rear of the hill. After capturing 20 German soldiers, the Americans were discovered by other German troops in neighboring trenches, who opened fire on them. Within minutes the squad was down to seven unwounded men, York included. The squad's officers and NCOs had all been killed or wounded, meaning that York was now in charge of the squad's survivors. He took his rifle and worked his way to a point near the occupied German trenches that were firing on his squad. From that position he shot and killed 17 Geman soldiers one after the other, then shot eight more with his pistol, killing three and wounding five. The surviving Germans had had enough and surrendered en masse to York; the final tally of captured German soldiers, counting the 20 the squad had taken earlier, was 132. Alvin York managed to work his way with his squad and the 132 prisoners through the bombed-out wasteland and back to the headquarters of the 328th Regiment. York was promoted to sergeant and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his amazing feat. At the end of the war he returned to Tennessee, in 1919, married Gracie and settled on a farm presented to him by his home state. The modest hero turned down many offers for endorsements, claiming "this uniform ain't for sale," and used the proceeds from the book and movie of his life Sergeant York (1941)) to establish schools for poor mountain children. During World War II York served on the Tennessee draft board and was a colonel in the Tennessee State Guard, commanding the 7th Regiment. Alvin York died in his home in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 2, 1964.
