Edwin Pearce Christy was an American composer, actor and stage producer, most famous for founding the most successful black-face minstrel show of the 19th century, Christy's Minstrels. Born in Philadelphia, his career as a minstrel and singer began in Buffalo, New York, where he performed singing in the Edwin Dean Company in 1836. By 1843, the group was growing in popularity and began touring in and around upstate New York until 1846, when Christy took over management of the group. As Christy's Minstrels, they began performing in New York City at Palmo's Opera House. After performing at an 1847 benefit in Cincinnati for young songwriter Stephen Foster, the group began to specialize in performances of Foster's works and were instrumental in spreading the popularity of the songs of America's first professional songwriter. Foster even sold his song, Old Folks at Home (aka Swanee River) to Christy for his exclusive use, although this was done most likely due to Foster's ongoing financial difficulties due to the lack of enforcement of music copyrights back then. In the early to mid-1850's, Christy's Minstrels were one of the top stage attractions in New York City. Christy himself retired as a performer in 1855 but continued in entertainment, running a chain of theaters called Christy's Opera House in several cities, while his stepson George continued with the minstrel group. However, due to marriage and other personal problems, and afraid of the financial damage he was suffering due to the effects of the Civil War, on May 20, 1862, Christy committed suicide by throwing himself from a window at his residence at 78 East 18th Street in Manhattan. He died the next day from his injuries and was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.- William A. Clark was born on 8 January 1839 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, USA. - American novelist Edgar Evertson Saltus was born in New York City in 1855. His family had been in New York City for quite some time--his ancestor, Adm. Kornelis Evertson of the Dutch Navy, had led the expedition that captured New York from the British in 1673.
Saltus got his schooling in New York City and attended Yale University in 1876, but left after a year. He spent several years traveling around Europe. He returned to the US and attended Columbia University, where he obtained a law degree (although he never practiced law). His first published work was a biography of 'Honore de Balzac', "Balzac", in 1884. "The Philosophy of Disenchatment", which came out the next year, was an account of philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and his school.
His first novel was "Mr. Incoul's Misadventure" in 1887, and was well received. He turned out several more works over the next few years, both fiction and non-fiction (his 1893 book "Imperial Purple", a study of Roman emperors, was a favorite of US President 'Warren G. Harding'). He is also thought to have written several "potboilers" under other names, including such works as "The Lovers of the World" and "The Great Battles of All Nations".
Married three times--the last to the woman who wrote his biography--he died in 1921 in New York City after a long illness. - Director

- Florence Foster Jenkins (born July 19, 1868 in Pennsylvania, U.S.; died November 26, 1944) was an American soprano who became famous because she was considered to be a poor singer. She sang somewhat out of tune, had a poor sense of rhythm and she was considered quite unmusical.
She was born Narcissa Florence Foster in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Mary Jane (Hoagland) and Charles Dorrance Foster, an attorney. She had music lessons when she was a child. She wanted to go and study music abroad. Her father was very rich, but he refused to pay for her to travel, so she ran away with a man called Frank Thornton Jenkins who was a doctor. They married, although they divorced in 1902. Her husband did not want her to be a singer either.
In 1909, her father died so she inherited some money which she used to have singing lessons. Soon she started to give recitals. Her mother died in 1928 and this gave her even more freedom and money to sing.
From her recordings we can hear that Jenkins sang very out of tune and out of time. She even wobbled a lot on one note. Her piano accompanist can be heard trying to change the speed to fit in with her mistakes.
Her words were unclear, especially when singing in a foreign language. However, she became tremendously popular in her unusual way. Her audiences seemed to love her in spite of her non-musicality. She always thought she was a good singer and compared herself to the great sopranos. She knew the critics wrote bad things about her, but she said: "People may say I can't sing, but no one can ever say I didn't sing."
Jenkins sang music from famous operas as well as classical songs (Lieder). She wore fancy costumes which she designed herself. She threw flowers into the audience and was always fanning herself.
In 1943, she was in a taxi that crashed. After the crash she found she could sing "a higher F than ever before." Instead of a lawsuit against the taxicab company, she sent the driver a box of expensive cigars.
In 1944, when she was 76, Jenkins performed at Carnegie Hall. Many people had wanted her to perform there. Tickets sold out weeks before the concert. Jenkins suffered a heart attack and subsequently died in Manhattan a month later. She always seemed to have been quite certain that she was a great singer. - Actor
