- His father was governor of Virginia and a judge. After graduating from college in 1807, Tyler studied law. At 19 he was admitted to the bar. From 1811 to 1815, Tyler sat in the Virginia House of Delegates. He then served as a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives from 1817 to 1821. Tyler was appointed governor of Virginia in 1825. In 1827 he resigned from this position because he was now elected to the US Senate, where he was represented until 1836. In these positions, Tyler distinguished himself as a staunch advocate of the "states' rights" theory and a faithful interpretation of the Constitution. The doctrine advocated the primary sovereignty and independence of the US states over the federal government. After turning away from the Democratic Party, Tyler was elected vice president in 1840 as the Whig candidate.
However, the new President William Harrison died in 1841 after only a month in office. Therefore, Tyler succeeded him as the tenth President of the USA on April 4, 1841. Differences with his new Whig party blocked the new president's key domestic policy initiatives. As a southern aristocrat, the former Virginia governor and senator was only put forward to win southern voters for Harrison. However, his political views were opposed to those of the Whig Party, which represented the interests of the northeastern states with their emerging industry and business community - so he vetoed the establishment of a national bank, which was a fundamental concern of the Whigs and their most prominent senator, Henry Clay. In the fall of 1841, he was expelled from the Whig Party. In 1842, when he vetoed the tariff bill, Congress tried, but failed, to impeach him.
In the area of foreign policy, Tyler prepared the incorporation of Texas into the Union after his presidency. In 1842, his Secretary of State Daniel Webster was able to reach a border treaty with Great Britain that established the border between Maine and Canada. In the run-up to the Civil War, he campaigned for secession and was elected to the Congress of the Confederacy, but died of a stroke before he could take office. In the presidential election of 1844, Tyler was no longer a candidate. Tyler was replaced in 1845 by James Knox Polk. After his presidency, however, Tyler remained involved in political life. Shortly before his death, he was elected to the Congress of the Confederate States of America in 1861. The politician died before its meetings opened.

He was a cinematographer, known for Toilers of the Sea (1936), Design for Murder (1939) and The King's Highway (1927). He died on 25 April 1950 in Richmond, Surrey, England, UK.- An African-American veteran performer who struggled in vain to build a
film career following a top role in an early all-black musical, Fannie
Belle DeKnight found herself in a dead end situation trapped in an
unflattering, stereotyped role and her film career went nowhere. Best
known for her benevolent, upbeat character of Mammy in the
King Vidor musical
Hallelujah (1929), the first all-black
feature film, she made only one more film, the musical short
A Rhapsody in Black and Blue (1932)
starring Louis Armstrong.
She was born Fannie Belle Johnson in Richmond, Virginia on May 22,
1869, during the "Reconstruction" period following the Civil War. Her
parents, Frank and Purie Johnson, encouraged her interest in the arts
and she grew in popularity singing and performing in church socials and
amateur theatre shows. She wound up marrying her pianist Samuel Knight,
a Barbados-born musician, in 1896. The couple toured together and she
eventually changed her stage name in consideration.
The Texas-born Vidor cast her in her most famous support role (she is
billed here as Fanny Belle DeKnight) in 1928 after seeing her in a
couple of concert performances. Co-starring
Nina Mae McKinney and
Daniel L. Haynes and with a 20s flavor,
this spiritual film focuses on the toils of a black family living on a
cotton plantation in the Deep South. When nothing came of her film
career, Fannie and her husband continued to perform musically across
the country in concert. She would also appear in short-runs on
Broadway, including the drama "Taboo" (1922), "Lulu Belle" (1926) and
"Carry Nation" (1932).
The couple eventually retired their act and settled in her native
Richmond in later years. She was a widow by the time she died
tragically on April 28, 1950, at age 81, after her clothes accidentally
caught fire at home from a kitchen wood stove. She was buried in the
Woodland Cemetery in Richmond. - Alfred Paumier was born on 14 November 1870 in Everton, Liverpool, England, UK. He was an actor, known for The Amateur Gentleman (1920), The Lifeguardsman (1916) and Wanted: A Widow (1916). He died on 25 January 1951 in Richmond, Surrey, England, UK.

- The fourth and youngest child of Horace and Robina Kelly, Jean Brooks spent her early years in her native Texas before relocating to Costa Rica with her mother after her father's death. Her time in Costa Rica enabled her to become fluent in Spanish, and she began her professional career as a singer with
Enric Madriguera and Orchestra
in New York City. She had a small role in the New York City-filmed
The Crime of Doctor Crespi (1935)
and the second lead in a state play, "Name Your Poison" (1938), with
Lenore Ulric. She was signed by an independent film production company
that had gone under by the time she got to Hollywood. She spent several
years at Universal as a leading lady in "B" pictures, including several
Johnny Mack Brown westerns, but her
option was dropped in late 1941. By this time she had married writer
(later director) Richard Brooks
and, with a certain Broadway hoofer having just signed at MGM, dropped
the Kelly and became Jean Brooks. She signed with RKO, where film buffs
know her for her three appearances for cult producer
Val Lewton, particularly her stunning
performance as a haunted devil worshiper in
The Seventh Victim (1943).
Her clipped delivery and intense, forceful acting style made her a
promising bet for stardom, but RKO lost interest in her by mid-'44 and
her roles got gradually smaller until she was dropped in 1946. She and
Brooks divorced (his later studio biographies omitted her name as one
of his ex-wives). For many years she was listed as a "Lost Player"
championed in several magazine articles by writer
Doug McClelland. She was eventually
located in San Francisco, where she had moved after her film career
petered out, and was employed as a classified ad solicitor on the "San
Francisco Examiner" newspaper. She had married a printer named Thomas Leddy.
Her death at the Kaiser Hospital in Richmond, California, in 1963 of complications resulting from cirrhosis marked a sad ending for a
stylish and talented performer who didn't get the breaks she deserved,
both personally and professionally. - Actor

Sometime in the early 1930s, Denny was between scenes on a movie set
when he met a neighborhood boy who was trying to fly a bulky
gas-powered model plane. When he tried to help by making an adjustment
on the machine, Denny succeeded only in wrecking it. But this launched
his infatuation with model aviation, and his new hobby grew into
Reginald Denny Industries, maker of model plane kits.
When the U.S. Army began hunting for a better and safer way to train
anti-aircraft gunners than using targets towed by piloted planes, Denny
and his associates Walter Righter and Paul Whittier began work on a
radio-controlled target drone, and their third prototype won them an
Army contract. Radioplane was formed in 1940, and during WWII produced
nearly 15,000 target drones (the RP-5A) for the Army. Radioplane was
later purchased by Northrop in 1952.- Writer
