- The giant-killing performances were what caught your attention first: hustling an uncompetitive Minardi around Suzuka to finish a barely credible 11th in 2001; seemingly appearing from nowhere to grab his first pole position (Malaysia 2003); and becoming the then-youngest-ever grand prix winner (Hungary, again in '03, appropriately nabbing the honour from Bruce McLaren himself, who'd achieved in way back in 1959) in truly effortless fashion.
With his intent signified, his move to the Renault team gave him the firepower to fulfill his ambition.
Armed with 2005's R25, the greatness that had been glimpsed in snatches was quickly and thoroughly refined. It was immediately apparent at that year's San Marino Grand Prix, where his incredibly precise defence of the lead kept no less than keening, hungry world champion Michael Schumacher at bay. It was a performance marked by the skill of an old veteran rather than a hungry newcomer.
The trickle of victories quickly turned into a torrent: seven wins by the end of the season, but - just as important - a steady stream of podium positions (five runner-up spots and three third places) that cemented his ascent to the title. Underlining the point, his was a world crown won with the seasoned experience of a master, not that of a fresh-faced youngster feeling his way nervously toward his first championship.
He was crowned in Brazil, finishing third behind - presciently - two McLarens. Standing on the podium, his ear was turned by Ron Dennis, who quietly assured the Spaniard that his future surely lay in one of Woking's silver cars.
A deal was quickly signed - but for 2007, leaving him to once again race for Renault in '06. That season, the old enemy - Schumacher - was back in contention, and both he and his Ferrari team used every weapon in their sizeable armoury to peg back Fernando's progress.
It made for a tense, nervy and paranoid season - but one where Fernando once again triumphed by playing the numbers game whenever he lacked the outright competitiveness to win. For the record, he still scored seven victories, and backed those up with seven further runner-up spots.
His 2006 title made him the sport's then-youngest-ever double world champion.
Buoyed by this momentum, he quickly made his mark at McLaren in 2007, winning his second race for the marque and quickly re-establishing the team at the competitive vanguard after a disappointing '06 season.
More victories followed - he led home an emotional McLaren one-two at Monaco, showcased his controlled aggression to snatch victory at the Nurburgring, and pummeled the opposition into submission at Monza. But his winning progress was matched by his rookie team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who also took four victories - and, at season's end, the McLaren challenge wasn't concerted enough to stem the singular charge of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, who took the title by just one point at the final race in Brazil.
If the title near-miss was a blow, it wasn't the most problematic issue in a season that was overshadowed by competitive rancour both on and off the track. The fallout was intense, both McLaren and Fernando parted company - the Spaniard returning to Renault for two largely uncompetitive seasons before joining Ferrari for 2010.
Fernando's time at the Scuderia was a rollercoaster of highs and lows - he won his very first race in a red car, at the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix, but went on to lose the title by the narrowest of margins after a strategic error cost him dearly at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
In 2011, he scored a solitary victory at Silverstone, then wrestled a less-than-competitive Ferrari to three magnificent victories in 2012 as he spearheaded the charge to usurp world champion Sebastian Vettel. While Fernando gave his all, his brave campaign once again came undone at the final race.
While his final two seasons at Ferrari coincided with a dip in the Scuderia's competitive fortunes, his period with the Maranello squad would repeatedly underline his credentials as the greatest, and most respected, driver in the sport. And while the record books won't fully reflect his successes, history will tell us that Fernando Alonso stood a shoulder above his peers in terms of reputation and ability.
At McLaren-Honda, he has resolutely vowed to take the reunified giants back to the top step of the podium, while at the same time replicating the past successes of his favourite driver and his childhood idol, Ayrton Senna.
While he has yet to drive a McLaren-Honda that does full service to his considerable talents, his drive and ambition remain undimmed. His races throughout 2016, when given the merest sniff of an opportunity, were sublime - and culminated in him claiming the season was one of his best-ever in Formula 1, because his innate confidence in the car enabled him to drive it to the maximum on almost every occasion.
A second stint with McLaren from 2015 to 2018 resulted in no further success.
After a two-year sabbatical, Alonso returned to Formula One in 2021 with Alpine. At the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix, Alonso scored his first podium in seven years. At the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix, he broke the record for most starts in Formula One. Alonso moved to Aston Martin for the 2023 season, where he saw great success at the beginning of the season, with six podium finishes in the first eight races. At the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Alonso scored his 100th podium by finishing third, becoming one of six drivers in the series' history to achieve that feat.
Alonso has won 32 Grands Prix, earned 22 pole positions, and scored 2267 points from 377 starts. He is the only Spanish Formula One driver to have won the World Championship. Until Carlos Sainz's maiden win at the 2022 British Grand Prix, Alonso was the only Spaniard to win a Formula One Grand Prix. Alonso won the 2001 Race of Champions Nations Cup with the rally driver Jesús Puras and the motorcyclist Rubén Xaus for Team Spain and thrice entered the Indianapolis 500 in 2017, 2019 and 2020. - Actor

Narciso Ibáñez Menta was born in Sama de Langreo, Asturias, Spain. A member of an important family of theatrical artists, the young Narciso toured with them through Spain and America. He arrived in Argentina aged 7 where he debuted in the suspense film A Light In The Window (Una luz en la ventana), directed by Manuel Romero in 1941. Tied to the cinema of fantasy and horror throughout his career, Ibañez Menta went on to star in Crime Stories (1942, by Manuel Romero) and Three Appointments With Fate (Tres citas con el destino, 1953), appearing in the episode directed by León Klimovsky. In the early 60's, he starred in the landmark Argentine horror film Masterworks Of Terror (1959) directed by Enrique Carreras (and Ibañez Menta, according Narciso himself). The film and the smash television series that followed were created by Narciso and his son Narcisco "Chicho" Ibañez Serrador for Argentine TV. In the ensuing years, Ibañez Menta and "Chicho" conceived, produced, directed and starred in several successful horror and suspense series both in Argentina and Spain. The Man Who Returned From Death (El hombre que volvió de la muerte), a 1969 TV miniseries taped in Argentina, was among his most popular and remembered works. Sadly, very little of his television work in Argentina is currently available as the material on which it was recorded was either lost or taped over with new material. Narciso returned to horror films with The Saga Of Dracula (1972) and was the protagonist of the Sebastián D'Arbo trilogy: Journey to the Beyond (Viaje al más allá, 1980), The Entity (El ser, 1982) and Beyond Death (Más allá de la muerte, 1986). A documentary about this great Spanish artist entitled Nadie inquietó más (No One Was More Unsettling), directed by Gustavo Mendoza, premiered at the Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre Film Festival in 2008. The original title initials were those of the artist it honored.- Writer

José Lisardo Suárez Sánchez was born in Trubia (Asturias, Spain) on Sept 9th.1919. He was raised in Oviedo until in 1927 the family moved to Logroño.
In 1935 after returning to Asturias his father died and he left school urged to find work. Only 16 when the Spanish Civil War broke out, he entered the Army on the National side, then the Falange. He joined the Legionary Corps (la Legión), and finally volunteered for the División Azul (German infantry division fighting communism) to Russia, returning to Spain in 1943. After the war ended he got a job at the Asturian railways. A well-known Spanish director, Gonzalo Delgrás, selected him after a casting to star in his next film, Altar mayor (1944). It became a success and the start of a long career. Some of his early films were Oro y marfil (1947), La niña de Luzmela (1950), Historia de una escalera (1950), a secondary role in Dawn of America (1951) and then came the young policeman in Criminal Squad (1950). This film became sort of a trademark for him, and from then on he would often play police roles and hard-boiled characters becoming his tall, reserved and dark looks. That same year, 1950, he married his Asturian girlfriend María Luisa, they would have a daughter.
He received an award for his role in An Impossible Crime (1954) and would be one of the football players in Once pares de botas (1954). He made Señora ama (1955) with Dolores del Río and then came Main Street (1956) with Betsy Blair, maybe his most well known film, for which he would receive the Triunfo award as best actor. The success of this film at the Venice festival opened him the doors to the Italian cinema. He got leading roles in films like The Challenge (1958), directed by Francesco Rosi, and Il magistrato (1959), directed by Luigi Zampa. He would go on playing mostly detective stories, drama, westerns and some comedies in Spanish and European productions.
In 1971 he was elected mayor and local head of the Movimiento (Franco's regime only political party) for Aller, Asturias, and left Madrid for his homeland, building a house in Moreda where he died after a previous stroke (thrombosis) in 1981. Lilián de Celis had a very uneven career both as an actress and as a singer. However, at one point she was immensely popular in Spain on the strength of a few recordings, one film and several stage musicals.
Lilián Ángela de Celis Collia was born in Fíos, Parres, province of Asturias, in Spain, on January 31, 1935. Very little is known of her family or her early years, but by the mid 50s she was a voice and music student at Madrid's Conservatory.
In those days, Maestro Indalecio Cisneros was the musical director for a successful radio show titled "Aquellos Tiempos del Cuplé" (Those Times of the Cuplé) which took a nostalgic look at the songs that were popular during "la belle époque." The show had a basic format: in each edition it featured different vocalists who would sing the required songs or "cuplés" while a couple of sentimental senior citizens remembered the good old days.
On a visit to the Conservatory, Maestro Cisneros heard Lilián and invited her to sing in the show. The young woman made a favorable impression on the listeners and was asked back to perform becoming part of the regular cast. As her popularity increased, Miss de Celis was signed by Discos Columbia and recorded some of the songs she performed on the radio show. Shortly after that, she married Columbia's musical director Maestro Manuel Monreal. However, after these auspicious beginnings, the broadcast was canceled and the singer's future became uncertain. But not for long.
In 1956, film producer and director Juan de Orduña was having trouble launching his own "cuplé" project. It has not been proven if Mr. de Orduña was influenced by the nostalgic radio show featuring Lilián, but the fact remains that he was working on a film which exploited the nostalgia for "la belle époque" and the "cuplés" in much the same way. The musical was titled El último cuplé (1957) and its filming was plagued by financial woes since no investor wanted to touch it. That in spite of the fact that the film star was beautiful Hollywood starlet Sara Montiel, the Spanish actress-singer who had by then secured a promising career in the US (Vera Cruz (1954), Serenade (1956), Run of the Arrow (1957).)
"El Último Cuplé" was finished somehow and by the end of 1957 it was the highest grossing film in the history of Spanish cinema creating a veritable "Saritamania" in Europe and Latin America. The soundtrack from the film was a huge success and the songs by Montiel were dominating the hit parades everywhere. Sarita Montiel had become a national treasure for Spain and in 1958 she was brought back from Hollywood to star in La violetera (1958), a high budget production which exploited the same elements as "El Último Cuplé" with a nostalgic "belle époque" setting and lots of songs from that era.
Actually, Spanish cinema turned exclusively to nostalgia musicals and the producers were looking desperately for singers who could produce the same results on the screen as Miss Montiel. It was natural that someone would remember Lilián de Celis' radio show and the singer was hired immediately to star in Aquellos tiempos del cuplé (1958). The publicity launched her as "Sarita Montiel's rival" and a national debate over who was the better singer of "cuplés" made headlines. It was true that Lilián possessed a better trained voice and that she was a good looking lady but she could not compete with Sarita, who substituted vocal prowess with a fresh eroticism that made history by defying the strict censorship of the Franco regime. Writer Terenci Moix stated: "Montiel brought eroticism to Spanish cinema and for that she deserves a monument."
It must also be taken into consideration that Sarita's photogenic beauty and charisma hypnotized moviegoers like no one else before or after her, so while "La Violetera" was stopping traffic at a theater on La Gran Vía Avenue, Miss de Celis' film ran quietly at another nearby theater. The same thing happened with their recordings. Montiel's sold like hot cakes while de Celis were purchased by the curious or "the purists" who sustained their preference for Lilián's more traditional and conservative sounds. The controversy has lasted through the years.
However, it was obvious to the industry that Lilián de Celis could not compete, less surpass the cinema appeal of her sexually charged "competitor" so the singer turned to the stage where she had a mild hit with a musical revue aptly titled "Aquellos Tiempos del Cuplé." Other revues followed which kept her busy in Spain between 1959 and 1960 when she was called again to star in the film Los claveles (1960), a spruced-up version of the zarzuela (operetta) which did not produced satisfactory results. The same can be said of her following three films Alma aragonesa (1961), Las estrellas (1961) and the movie filmed in 1963 Júrame (1964). We would have to hire a private investigator in Spain to find somebody who saw those films or even heard of them. None of her movies after "Aquellos Tiempos del Cuplé" were released in America.
In 1963 Lilián decided to try her luck in Mexico (as Montiel had done some years before), but again there's not much information about her activities there. She probably worked on the stage for a while and then took fourth billing in a low budget musical film called Los apuros de dos gallos (1963). Later in 1965 she appears in the weird transsexual-themed film Me ha gustado un hombre (1965) (she was given third billing on this one), a movie considered "one of the worst ever since Ed Wood's Glen or Glenda (1953)". She disappears from film credits for 10 years and makes a much-touted comeback in Spain with Yo fui el rey (1975), which did not impress anybody and is her last film to date. Her filmography also boasts another title, Canciones de nuestra vida (1975), an anthological film made of film clips from other movies.
From then on, Miss de Celis turns fully to stage and night club work in Spain. She also shows up occasionally on television singing one of her nostalgic "cuplés" or on gossip columns trying to revive the old controversy of who is a better singer, Miss Montiel or her... It was ironic that Lilián accepted in 1992 an one-time invitation to sing one song on Sara Montiel's television show "Ven al Paralelo." In order to dispel any notion of rivalry, Montiel introduced de Celis as "the original cuplé singer ... she really knows how to sing." Observers could not help but notice that on this show Lilián's one song was preceded and followed by Montiel's four songs, comedy sketches and numerous appearances in different gowns as if to say "do not forget who is boss here..." In 2005 Lilián de Celis made the headlines again due to the showing of her films at a Festival in her homeland of Asturias. One can only hope that in the near future her filmography becomes available on DVD to give everybody the chance to judge her entire body of work.- Actress
