- Tavares launched a new chapter in his NHL career on July 1, 2018, when he signed a seven-year, $77 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team that the native of Mississauga, Ontario, grew up rooting for.
The Maple Leafs got a player who had become one of the NHL's top stars during nine seasons with the New York Islanders, who selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL Draft. He had NHL career highs in goals (47) and points (88) in his first season with the Maple Leafs and was named Toronto's captain on Oct. 2, 2019.
Given his route to the NHL, Tavares' success was no surprise. At 14 he was granted exceptional player status by the Ontario Hockey League, allowing him to be eligible for the OHL Draft. He was selected with the No. 1 pick by Oshawa in 2005.
Tavares stepped right into the Oshawa lineup as a 15-year-old and had 45 goals and 77 points to win OHL and Canadian Hockey League Rookie of the Year honors. In his second season, he had 72 goals and 134 points, then had seven goals and 19 points in nine playoff games. He was named Most Outstanding Player in the OHL and Player of the Year in the CHL, which includes all three junior leagues in Canada. He also broke Wayne Gretzky's OHL record for most goals in a season by a 16-year-old (Gretzky had 70).
Tavares' transition to the NHL was smooth; he had 24 goals and 54 points in 2009-10 to finish fifth in voting for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top rookie, and was named to the All-Rookie Team. Among NHL rookies he was tied for first in goals, second in points and third in assists (30).
His offensive talent, drive and willingness to play in all areas of the ice make the ultra-competitive Tavares a franchise center. On Sept. 9, 2013, he was named the 14th captain in Islanders history.
In Game 6 of the Eastern Conference First Round in 2016, Tavares had the game-tying goal in the final minute of the third period, then scored in double overtime to win the series against the Florida Panthers. The Islanders advanced to the second round for the first time since 1993. It was a new chapter for someone who's been a marquee player virtually since he was born. At the age of 1 he became the poster boy for a Broadway musical called "Baby" that was playing at a theater in Toronto. That morphed into a child modeling career in which Spezza was chosen at the age of 4 for a Minute Maid television commercial, and at the age of 6 for clothing ads for Woolco and Kmart.
Spezza's hockey career has followed a similar path.
He began his junior career at the age of 15, scoring 71 points in 67 games as an underage player for Brampton of the Ontario Hockey League. A year later, when he made his IIHF World Junior Championship debut, Spezza joined Wayne Gretzky and Eric Lindros as only the third 16-year-old to make Canada's WJC roster. Rated the top Canadian Hockey League prospect ahead of the 2001 NHL Draft, Spezza was selected with the No. 2 pick by the Ottawa Senators.
After being named MVP of the American Hockey League while playing with Binghamton in 2004-05, Spezza made his first impact with the Senators, setting a team record with 71 assists during the 2005-06 season.
That season was the first of two in which Spezza hit the 90-point mark in Ottawa, and he went on to produce four seasons of at least 30 goals, the first coming in 2006-07. Spezza scored 34 goals that season, then tied for the League lead with 15 assists and 22 points during the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when the Senators reached the Final for the first time before losing to the Anaheim Ducks.
Spezza helped lead the Senators to the playoffs four more times over the next six seasons and he was named the eighth captain of the Senators on Sept. 14, 2013. But Spezza's captaincy was short-lived; he was traded to the Dallas Stars on July 1, 2014 and signed a four-year contract on Nov. 21, 2014.
Spezza had his fifth 30-goal season in 2015-16, when he scored 33 for the Stars. He remained in Dallas through the 2018-19 season, then became a free agent and decided the time had arrived to come home. - Lexi Ross was born on 15 September 1986 in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. - Shannon Moroney is the author of two bestselling memoirs: Through the Glass (2011), her own story following the violent crimes of her first husband; and Out of the Shadows (2019), the story of human trafficking survivor Timea Nagy. Both are published worldwide by Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster. Heal for Real: A guided journal to forgiving others-and yourself (Page Two Publishing, 2022) is a transformative self-help guide to healing through the exploration of "the new F word, forgiveness." It is also published in Spanish as "Mejor-Ando: Un diario guiado para perdonar a otros-y perdonarte a ti."
Shannon is an internationally recognized advocate of restorative justice, a powerful speaker, one of the "world's 50 most resilient people" (Global Resilience Project), a New York Times "Woman in the World" recommended writer, and is featured by the international Forgiveness Project. She travels extensively to lead transformative forgiveness and healing retreats for people and communities overcoming trauma, and those that cause it. She is also a powerful keynote speaker and guest lecturer. In 2019, Shannon launched a line of empathy-building greeting cards called #FindTheWords, available on etsy.com. Proceeds from these cards go to support her healing programs for survivors.
As a registered social worker and trauma therapist, Shannon specializes in treating survivors of sexual assault and trafficking, as well as family members of sex offenders, and guiding them to achieve post-traumatic growth. She has provided expert testimony in court, consultation on crime bills, and she guides attorneys, law enforcement and journalists to pursue trauma-informed practices.
In addition to her clinical work in private practice, Shannon is the survivor advocate on the international investigation into disgraced fashion mogul Peter Nygard, who is awaiting trial on sex trafficking and assault charges in both Canada and the USA. Her work is featured in the CBC documentary Evil By Design: Surviving Nygard, and the award-winning podcast by the same name, as well as Unseamly: The Investigation of Peter Nygard, available on Discovery+.
