He is entirely blind and experts declare it impossible to restore his lost vision. A year passes. Suddenly his sight returns. He sees his wife sitting at the piano. By her side is the "friend," John Trapp. The "friend's" arms are wound affectionately around Mrs. Powers, who doesn't appear to be otherwise than pleased. He closes his eyes again, while the love making goes on. A day later Powers is alone with his wife. She is sitting at the desk and is writing a letter. He employs a ruse to get her out of the room. He asks her to fetch a book for the blind that he had left in the parlor. He reads her letter; it is to Trapp. "Mine: it cannot be. What opinion would you have of the woman who would desert her blind husband? But should he recover his sight I would come to you. Dora." He says nothing to her during the day. In the evening despite the import of the letter, Trapp call, unconscious that the supposedly blind husband is watching his every move. Then from the chair rises the outraged husband. He says not a word. Powers' arm goes up, his finger pointing to the door. Trapp picks up his hat and walks out. Mrs. Powers falls at her husband's feet. "I have seen all," are the words of the husband, as he lays his hand upon the erring head.

The first Italian contribution is "Avarice and Anger" concerning a well-to-do real estate agent and his frowzy wife, both uncompromisingly selfish in love and economics; the second Italian entry, "Envy", directed by Roberto Rossellini, from a story by Colette, is a glimpse into the newly-married life of an aging artist and his young wife, whom he treats as a chattel and she, consumed by the envy of his talent, friends and even his cat, tries to do away with the cat; "Pride" is about a couple of down-at-the-heels aristocrats trying to keep up pretenses in the face of utter poverty; "Lust" shows the devastating effects of careless adult behavior on an impressionable child; "Sloth" shows the powers above deciding that life on earth is moving at a too-fast pace and they send an emissary to slow things down, while "Gluttony" is a burlesque piece that the reviewers of the day called in bad taste.

The villain escapes from prison and makes his way to the railroad station and boards a train where he is tracked by private detectives. When the train stops at a country station, Fantomas alights with the intention of making good his escape, but he finds that he is being followed by two detectives, whom he recognizes. He goes back to his carriage, which leads the detectives to think he is quite safe, but he crosses the train and leaves by the opposite door, jumping into the baggage wagon of the train on the opposite rail. Just at that moment the train moves and a magistrate who happens to have nearly missed the train also jumps into the baggage wagon. Fantomas was who hiding, attacks the magistrate, and after a severe struggle in which he is victorious assumes the disguise of the magistrate and takes his clothes and papers. He continues the journey as the magistrate, successfully rescues certain criminals, who are brought before him to be tried, and manages to blackmail several members of society, with whom he is brought in contact. While here he is recognized by Fandor, the young and clever journalist who happens to come into the district and who has suspicions as to the authenticity of the magistrate. He decides to keep watch upon him. His suspicions are well founded and he identifies the magistrate as none other than Fantomas. After much trouble, he is able to get papers committing Fantomas to prison, but Fantomas' suspecting his immediate arrest, issues an order to the head warden, and tells him that it is Detective Juve's intention to be arrested disguised as Fantomas. The warden is not to tell a soul of the detective's intentional disguise, but is to let him remain in prison until 12 o'clock midnight, when the head warden is to personally release him. The police, not suspecting anything of this, feel quite safe when Fantomas is put in the cell and securely barred and locked. His scheme works favorably and once more Fantomas is at large.
